this is the kind of overwatch lore we are talking about, goddamit. needless to say, the short story was amazing. not just the artworks and the writing were fabulous, but also the lore. finally, a piece of lore that doesn’t make us go scavenge hunting over timeline points and facts. this is all we wanted.
blizzard, keep it up.
ps: let’s all feign surprise over the revelation about jack’s sexuality. we don’t call this game gaywatch for nothing, my dudes.
Coming in at about 5,200 words, this Overwatch short story is dedicated to filling in some blanks regarding Ana's reemergence from her "presumed dead" status. Her vigilante cover is blown when she recognizes Soldier 76 and jumps in to aid him from an attack by Reaper... who she struggles with and recognizes as her old comrade Gabriel just before he escapes her.
In the aftermath, she tends to a severely wounded Soldier who, in Old Man Logan style, is facing the decline of his regenerative abilities. Amid his recovery they discuss some of their shared history, and Soldier attempts to convince Ana to join him in destroying Talon. She declines at first, concerned over leaving Cairo without a defender. Soldier eventually agrees to aiding her first in bringing down Hakim.
For a bit of video game lore, this is some fairly high-quality material. The story is told in 3rd-person omniscient point-of-view, though it doesn't dive too deeply into either Ana or Soldier's psyche. Included art is variable, sometimes taking up whole pages, and remaining true to the angular, cell-shaded look of the more Westernized style we often see attached to the game's comics.
On the downside... it felt like the story built up tension to a big and well-planed battle with Hakim, only to resolve in a quick and simple summary. I'm sure the events are covered in one of the comics, but it was still an anticlimactic way to end and otherwise well-detailed piece.
The best of the three same-style stories of overwatch characters I've read (and exist) so far; Ana, Mercy and Baptist. I loved the action and the ethical choices in Baptist's story and the kindness and devotion in Mercy's, but what I loved the most is the backstory and the connection in between Ana, Jack and their past selves and decisions. I also know that overwatch Lore is not presented in a linear way but I've come to enjoy the fact that everything overwatch-story-related I find on my way, wether it is a cinematic, some gameplay voicelines, comics, these narrated stories ect, they always give you something more and the most of it hasn't been mentioned before in any other media. It's like hunting for Lore and I love it. Even some game sprays give you hints about the character's personality. This is an amazing fandom and I love being a part of this community 💛
I've been meaning to catch up with the Overwatch short stories since they came out!! I have all of the skins they were written for and everything. Now that Ashe's book has come out, I really do think it's time! I won't say they're much of a story, but I do absolutely love seeing more of the story of these characters. Overwatch still remains my favourite game, as it has been for years, and I'm never going to say no to more content. The art in this is also stunning!! Worth it just on it's own!! Really excited to catch up with the rest of the lore before the second game comes out (I know that's a while away but man am I excited)
They always allude to the action; the aftermath of a fight, or the moment beforehand, but they never show it. I like the little heart-to-heart interactions between Ana and Jack, but for a story based on an action game, this needs to show more action instead of teasing us.
uuugghhfhfhhj i get so mad thinking abt the wasted potential for overwatch’s lore , ,..,, , it’s the absolute worst because this story sets up way more than i’d realised + then i remember it doesn’t even go anywhere. so i actually deducted a star for that. i’m mad.
Blizzard and Overwatch team.... WE NEED MORE OF THIS, PLEASE!!!! So much backstory was brought to light in this that the whole fanbase needed! I wait with baited breath for some Mercy backstory!
I read this when the event came out during the game. I loved it because it was more writing and less animation. The writing was very well done. My only complaint was that it wasn't longer. It's a way of introducing character lore since the current state of Overwatch is that it is just a PVP (Player versus Player) game with little lore unless it is introduced in this manner or 'shorts.'
This is what we needed to start this year off for Overwatch. I loved the comics, but if they can keep putting out short stories like this, I’d be more than happy. Giving lore while creating more mysteries in this universe is the best way to go
