She’s dedicated her life to protecting the innocent, and her mixed linage only makes her better at her job. Unfortunately, her blood also makes her the only one capable of entering Hell’s hidden wards. Now her latest assignment will see Grace endure the trials of the seven deadly sins in order to win a barbaric tournament to secure an important prize for the Nephilim. To survive, Grace will be forced to embrace her dark side and accept the help of her greatest opponent yet, Lucifer’s son. Playing with Demons starts out a bit slow but quickly gains in momentum till you find yourself sucked into Grace Campbell’s tale.

Grace has been raised by the “the Organization” (of Nephillim) to kill demons. Her mother was raped by a demon so she is a half breed and the best fighter they have. After returning from a test run of a new weapon, Grace is summed down to the organizations leaders office where she is given orders to infiltrate hell’s tournament, a straight up suicide mission.

Grace reluctantly accepts and starts her endeavors to join in hell’s competition, where she quickly discovers everything is nothing what she imagines. And her guide through this new world is none other than Lucifer’s son, Zadeon.

I really enjoyed Playing with Demons and here comes the but…But it was extremely predicable. Take on a suicide mission only to discover that the “good guys” are not what they seem, the “bad guys” are also not what they seem and there is good and bad to both sides.

Bottom line: I was entertained. I loved the humor. Edward writes great characters that you can really get behind. And even though I quickly worked out where the plot was heading, I still had a great time getting there.

I received this ARC copy of Playing with Demons from Cally Edwards. This is my honest and voluntary review.

“I was finally seeing all the shades of grey between the black and white, and there was beauty in the darkness.

4.5 stars

Wow, this book came out of nowhere and just rocked my world! I was so intrigued by the blurb of this book, and from the moment I started I was completely hooked. A paranormal romance that is exciting, intense, funny, emotional and gorgeously romantic, this is a really entertaining read, and I loved it!

Grace Campbell was raised amongst the Nephilim – a race of angel/human offspring charged with protecting humankind from the demon threat that they are completely oblivious to. But Grace is different – she is half Nephilim/half demon, and though that gives her skills that her colleagues don’t possess, she hates her demon half and she has dedicated her life to fighting for the good guys. But Grace’s latest assignment is about to change everything. She is being sent to hell – literally.

With her demon blood making her capable of crossing the wards into Hell, Grace is being sent to enter a tournament where she will battle for her life, and hopefully return the prize to the Nephilim. But before she can do that, she needs to acclimatise, and who better to help her do that than the dark Lord’s crew of seven elite warriors, and Lucifer’s son himself, the darkly sexy Zadeon. Grace has no clue what she’s in for, and everything she ever thought she knew is about to be turned completely upside down.

I was falling apart quicker than I could catch the pieces. I knew even if I could, they would never fit back together the same way.

I loved the world that Edwards has created. Not only is it interesting with wonderfully developed characters, but it takes long-held beliefs and flips them on their head, revealing a different perspective to the age-old battle between heaven and hell, angels and demons, good and evil. It’s a really intriguing twist that I enjoyed exploring.

And the characters that Grace meets along the way are just fantastic! From the funny to the stoic to the flirty and the badass, they are a fantastic bunch, each with their own interesting story, and I really enjoyed getting to know them.

But most of all, there is Zadeon, and oh holy damn. The Prince of Hell is smart, powerful and gorgeously sexy, and against all odds, he wants Grace.

“It appears I’m only interested in stubborn, fiery, little hunters, sent to infiltrate my home and take down my kind.”

The chemistry is fantastic, the sexual tension sizzles and though the sexy time is pretty subdued, I loved this romance! There’s no stupid or unnecessary angst - the attraction is there, it understandably takes them a bit of get on the same page, but once they do it’s functional and intense, with a possessive, protective alpha demon and his smartass, snarky badass heroine, and I love them together!

“I want you, Grace. And you want me. That makes you mine. And I’m not ready to give you up.”

There’s action galore as Grace battles her way through the tournament, as well as involving herself in the investigation into mysterious kidnappings that are impacting the underworld. And as Grace spends time with her new friends and explores her new world, she finds herself questioning her past, who she is, and her entire belief system, and the emotion of that journey is really beautifully written.

I may have been left standing alone, sacrificed and left for dead by the very people I had trusted, but I had learned a valuable lesson, and in doing so, freed myself.

The story ends well – if a bit abruptly – but this is only the first of the The Devil’s in the Details series, and with such a strong start, I can’t wait for more!

4.5 stars.

I came across this book through an email book rec and It caught my attention. I am huge PNR and Urban Fantasy fan but this was a new author and I wasn't sure what to expect, the blurb really had me curious so I dove right in. I was not disappointed! After the first few chapters I was hooked! First off, the the way the author writes is great. I liked the pace and style. I really thought the whole stories concept was quite intriguing! Grace is a really well developed character and I loved to see her grow as the book continued. One of my favorite things to read in a book is a character coming into their own, learning and growing. This book has this with Grace and boy does she have some big issues to deal with. This book as a great amount of mystery, drama, bad ass fights/action and romance. I was not prepared for how amazing the Prince of hell Zadeon and the other men in this book were going to be. The world building and general care and detail that went into the development of the whole story is fantastic. The depth this book has is really great and I found myself completely engrossed. I am so glad I came across this book and I hope to read more!

4.5/5Upgraded to a 5 after coming back to this after a few days. I want to read the next book, quite a bit, so it's worth the upgrade. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this, and am impressed with this as a debut book. For a debut, it’s pretty amazing.

I liked how music was used in this. It set the scene quite well when you knew what songs were playing in the background. And there was some great music, and the ones I haven’t heard of, I’ll be listening to, if they’re anything like the others mentioned.

There was a definite romance in this, but it wasn’t one of those where they tortured each other forever, and there was no love triangle. Two positive things to me. The over-protective nature of Zadeon was a little eye-roll worthy, but at the end of the day, he’s super-powerful and she was an unknown, so I guess it kind-of makes sense.

The main character was well-developed, she had her own backstory, and it tied in neatly with who she was. Her personality matching her experiences well.

My favourite part of this was the world-building. The nephilim vs demon thing, even though the nephilim were relatives of the highest level demons was a fun take. The abilities and quirks of the demons were fun, their demon marks making for some great description. The setting was fun. I enjoyed reading about what hell looked like, and how it didn’t follow 90% of the stereotypes.

I’ll admit this isn’t a book I’d necessarily recommend as a serious read, but as a light, fun read, I enjoyed it. And if I want a few hours of entertainment, I’ll look for the next in the series. I’m hoping one is coming at some point. There’s a hint of more stories to be told, so I think there’ll be more, and I look forward to it.

I hate rating this so low. I really do - especially since there is a genuinely interesting plot thread snaking through the novel. But even that isn't enough to make this an enjoyable read for me.

Part of it is that I don't understand the world building. I found it really hard to understand "hell" as a location, and I ended up assuming it was a parallel plane of existence, similar to the Fey world.

Then, I didn't understand the instant attraction and loyalty between Zadeon and Grace. Probably because if a hot guy who showed interest in me and then proceeded to make out (publicly) with another girl in front of me (for ANY reason), it would take more than two chapters for me to fall into bed with him.

Also, the forced "playlist" ended up getting on my nerves. I totally get that many authors listen to music while writing, but in this book, every fight scene and training scene and bar scene has a song. Like, it's announced, complete with band name and song title.

Bub and I entered a massive training room where Disturbed's "Indestructible" was blasting through unseen speakers

Imagine that, but every chapter or so with a different band and song. At best it was distracting, at worst alienating for a reader. There's some really specific references to music and language that will soon be dated (at best) or is already really cringe-worthy (at worst)

Madison and I shook our groove-thangs at each other

So, if you don't know that song, this sentence just sounds .... really gross.

And here's something REALLY nit-picky. I have always hated when heroines "screech" - which Grace does often, in people's faces and then turns, stomps off and slams the door. I feel like "screech" is so ...unlikeable and immature, and it makes me think only of harpies, bald eagles, or annoying, spoiled girls.

I think this series has potential. I think the author could be great. I'm just not a fan of this book because of the thin world-building and character connections and the abundance of specific cultural references, which I feel will make the book un-relatable in a few years.

Then again, it could just be me.

This book was a pretty amazing start to a whole new world. This world really pushed the good/evil paradigm and left you questioning your own biases.

Grace has been raised to fight and kill demons. Sounds light a legit calling, right? She is half demon herself, from what "the Organization" tells her, it's because her mother was raped by one. Things all start to get a little muddy when people she trusts end up throwing her literally into hell. Once there, all of her previous understanding is thrown out the window. Oh, and did I mention the hottie? There's ways a hottie, right?

In between fighting for her life, coming to grips with being used, and making unexpected friends, Grace is also navigating the world of dating in the underworld. Not too complicated, right? She is just starting to truly find her own independent voice when we have to end this tale. I eagerly anticipate more from this author and this world. Grace is rapidly shaping herself into a warrior for true good.

I was hesitant the first few pages into the book because I wasn’t sure which direction this book was going to take and I couldn’t decide if I liked how brief the first chapter was, or if I was annoyed that I didn’t get a chance to properly get a feel of the other characters and surroundings. I feel that if the first two chapters had been a little longer with a bit more detail it would have really helped set up information the readers could use later in the book.

Playing with Demons follows Grace as she goes into the home of the Devil on assignment where she uncovers secrets about herself and the two races. This could give way to a lot of whining but I was honestly surprised and happy to see that Grace was quite a levelheaded character and at moments where I would expect a tantrum she was mostly calm and thought about the new revelation. I can honestly say that she was a developed character from the first page and just continued to grow as the story progressed.

As for Zadeon I have one word; SWOON! I can proudly say that I am in love with him and “Son of Satan” has made it to the top of my list as favorite potential love interests. I won’t go into too much detail but I loved how he tried to ease Grace into the truth and his world. He facinated me more than Grace did and I can’t wait to find out more about this particular character.

Along with Zadeon I fell in love with the other secondary characers. With books the characters either make or break the story and they definitely made this one.

What a surprisingly delightful little book! I picked it up because, with writing The Sin Soldiers, I've been interested in reading other books that refer to or play around with the seven deadly sins. This was a fun one, and I'm hoping the author continues the series.

really exciting start to a series! wish it was a bit longer. But I think it was a good start to the characters I really liked them so far. I would like a little more world building and maybe some more relationship/interaction with the characters I just like the back and forth's. But cant wait to check out the next one!

Playing With Demons is the debut novel by Cally Edwards and the first in her Devils in the Details series and is a fun and enjoyable demonic fantasy that will effortlessly keep readers entertained.

Grace Campbell lives in a world where humans are unaware of the demons that roam amongst them and it’s up to Nephilim to keep them from harm. Grace may be born half-Nephilim and half-demon, but her loyalty has always been to the Nephilim and she has dedicated her life to protecting the innocent. However there’s no denying her blood helps make her better at her job….and also gives her some advantages including being the only person capable of entering Hell’s hidden wards. Which is why Grace’s latest assignment will mean she needs to enter Hell and participate in a demon tournament where contestants must overcome trials inspired by the seven deadly sins. The prize? An object that could mean securing power over destiny for the Nephilim. To survive, Grace will need to embrace her dark side and utilize the assistance of Lucifer’s son Zadeon. Yet as Grace gets to know Prince of Hell she soon begins to question everything she’s ever been told and finds herself wondering exactly who the bad guys really are…..

I must admit, I began Playing With Demons with very little expectations. I started the novel just to kill a little time and while I don’t think this novel will ever win awards for its brilliance, I found it a really fun novel to read. In fact, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It made me think of Demon Trappers by Jana Oliver which is one of my favourite demon series and I think that Cally Edwards made a real effort to try to write something different with Playing With Demons. There were many elements that were unique to the novel----such as female demons only being fertile every 30 years and conception impossible unless the female actually wishes to conceive--- as well as a delightful twist on just who are the “ bad guys”.

The protagonist Grace was easy to follow and a capable, independent woman. Admittedly I did spend about 30% of the story imagining her as a 17-18 year old teenage girl only to discover she is actually a 25-year-old woman when Cally Edwards references her age for the first time. I think her voice at times read younger than her years. Perhaps this was due to come of her actions and her thought process, but Grace came across as a younger individual. I felt like a had to fight to envision her as a woman and she may have seemed more believable if she was written in the younger age demographic.

Regardless of my small issues with Grace’s age, I really enjoyed how she interacted with the other characters around her and thought Cally Edwards did a great job with her supporting cast. Grace has a likable romantic interest in Zadeon, but it was all the other demons who quickly won me over, child and warrior Elite alike. Beezlebub, Armaros, Gadreel, Tabitha and especially cutie-pie Zac amongst others brought such life to the story and made me as the reader question who were the real enemy. I loved how Cally Edwards turned things around and offered a new twist on demon nature.

Building to an ending that raises more questions whilst giving some answers, Playing With Demons is an entertaining novel and leaves me keen to see what happens next!

I believe this is a new Australian authors first book. In the first part of this book, I thought I might struggle a little with the writing etc, but once Grace the heroine went to 'hell' I got invested in the story and I believe this first book is the beginning of what could be a solid series. I was left definitely wanting more.

Grace is half Nephilim, half demon trained as a highly skilled demon hunter. She believes she is the product of demon rape and shuns her demon side. She is tasked by the Nephilim to enter a demon tournament as she is the only hope they have of entering 'hell' due to her demon blood. She plans to win a special spear that is the prize and learn more about the demons. However what she learns is not what she was expecting - but rather meets some great 'demons' including demon children and discover Nephilim may be responsible for their own atrocities against demon woman and children.

The world building wasn't immense - but we already know a bit about Nephilim and Demons - but I did like the 'twist' or different take on demons not being as bad as believed. I also liked the tournament plot line and the budding romance with Lucifer's son Zadeon. The side characters of the 'Elite' the 7 highest ranking demon soldiers and their different personalities brought some nice comic relief and friendship. The Lucifer character was interestingly portrayed. Kind of a sad/ crazy but redeemable sort.

There were quite a few moments where i thought 'I will need to remember this' as it seems pertinent for a reason but the reason never came to fruition so I am assuming it will feature in the next book? In case it is -here they are (potential spoiler alert);

- after the first time Grace and Zadeon get intimate he says 'you're mine now' and there was implied deeper meaning to this.
- an angel visits Grace and guides her through one of the tournament challenges and at the end says something like 'he wont give you up easily' that Grace didn't understand but I presume is linked to Zadeon and maybe my first point.

I never really write reviews, I usually just read other reviews to see if I'll be interested in a book or not. And I came across this book because it was just listed under 2019 most anticipated. I read the summary and thought it sounded interesting and different. And of course after reading it I just had to write a review about this book cause it was amazing. I loved this book. Can't wait for the rest of the series to come out. SPOILERS AHEAD: I was kind of hoping the series would continue with each one of Lucifer's Watchers falling in love with a woman, most of the seven were single. But I went onto the author's website after I finished reading and she doesn't have a date for the second book out yet but she does have a summary and it going to continue with Grace and Zadeon. I'm excited for the next book cause we're just getting started on how Grace is developing in the underworld and how she is falling in love with the Prince of Darkness. And who knows maybe later the author will write a spin off series of the seven watchers and even a happily ever after for Lucifer himself (his whole background story is truly heartbreaking it even made me cry, and after all he has been through he deserves a happily ever after.) There is one question I have for the author though and it's about his Annabelle if she is truly an angel now why hasn't she chosen to fall to be with him? or is it because she is an angel in Purgatory and not allowed a choice. I'm just dying to know the rest of their story its just so heartbreaking.

I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book. Ms. Edwards created believable characters who embodied the reality that there is a lot more grey area between good and evil than some would like to think. The main protagonist is a strong female whose world is turned upside down. We are taken along for the ride when she learns that what she "knows" isn't true. Her entire life she has been led to believe that the good guys are good guys and the bad guys are bad. When the tables are turned, she develops new allies and has to come to terms with the lie that has been her life. With plenty of sexual heat, this action-filled story is a sure-fire winner! Ms. Edwards left the ending open, which I hope means she is planning on a series. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

I might've given this book 5 stars, since it was such a fun and curious read, but the beginning was weak and undeniably rushed. I almost put it down after the 3rd chapter. I'm glad I persevered. I enjoyed the main character and her candidness, and the author's spin on conventional good and evil was well structured and believable. The supporting characters were interesting and unique of one another, making it easy to become familiar with them and their role in the story...because there were many characters. I am disappointed that this wasn't a complete work but more disappointed that the next book isn't out yet. It seems all authors these days are paving the way for a collection. Ho hum. I hope to remember how fond I was of this book when it does hit the digital shelves.

I really got into the lore of this book exceptionally fast, totally sucked in. Of course, when I finished, on to the second since it is obviously a series right? Dead wrong... total cliffhanger and it seems like the author freaking disappeared! Her fb page last updated 2020, her website link can't be located, it's a huge mystery. Why start something that a- intriguing, b- win accolades and awards... to what scrap it for 5 years? Honestly, I wish I would've done more research into her before I got so wrapped into this book. Don't read if you get angry by a stories abrupt ending without explanation!!

Grace's heritage of being half Nephilim and half demon gives her certain abilities other Nephilim are able to complete. One of which being her latest assignment crossing the wards of hell to enter in a tournament for the Spear of Destiny. As she competes in the tournament with the seven deadly sins, she learns things are not always as she's been taught. As Zadeon teaches her about embracing her demon side, she knows she must do all to win.

I have loved this world where demons are good. I fell in love with some of them and even Lucifer dazzled me ..
Grace / Natara's story is not a happy one. With an origin that means that she does not belong to the world of demons or Nephilim, in her desire to belong she agrees to enter hell in order to obtain a prize that would make her a heroine in the eyes of her own. Unfortunately, this trip will only bring pain, lies and the revelation of secrets that completely collapse your world.
That ending left me with many questions that I hope I can solve soon.

I wasnt expecting to love this book but by about half way through, I found I couldn't put it down!!

Our h, Grace, is actually likeable; although misguided, she is strong yet kind hearted and powerful but understands her own limits. Her main squeeze, Zadeon, is just so sweet. His infinite power doesn't make him cruel; snarky, fierce and a bit cocky?? Sure, but not cruel.

Its an interesting, somewhat lighter take on demons and the under-world. Ms.Edwards definitely left plenty of questions to be answered in a sequel, which i would gladly read!!
