Halo glasslands
This was a wonderful story for the trilogy. It does a great job of picking up where Ghosts of Onyx left off, and is a good lead into Halo 4 with introductions to Infinity and Jul Mdama. My only complaint is that there was a tremendous amount of focus on Halsey being immoral with the kidnapping for SIIs. It seems overdone in my opinion making out Halsey to be this huge evil crime lord when I believe desperate times called for desperate measures and her Spartans were an effective solution to insurgents and the covenant. The focus on her journal was numbing as well, obviously an advertisement for the special edition Halo 4 set which includes it. The dynamic between Halsey and Mendez was interesting to watch play out as they both defended their Spartan programs, as well as learning a bit more about ONI and how Osman is being groomed for the top spot. Sangheilios is an interesting setting and I enjoy reading about their culture and norms. Overall a fine addition in the Halo series.
Plot Notes:
Halsey and the team regroup in the onyx core. Osman and Dr Phillips negotiate with an elite called Telcam, who agreed to leave the humans alone if they supplied him with weapons to fight the arbiter who brought shame to Sangheili. Admiral Parangosky is head of ONI, and Serin Osman is actually Spartan 019.
We meet Mal and Vaz who are ODSTs in Australia trying to go to a bar to salute a fallen comrade. It is in rubbles, so they swig some fruit juice from local workers and move on.
It’s made known Halsey was hoping Onyx was some kind of shield world that would protect her Spartans. She also connects the dots with Parangosky designating Onyx off limits for the S-III program.
Parangosky is fond of captain Osman, a previous Spartan. She knows Halsey is out there, and a slipspace rupture was left where Onyx used to be. She hints at the “Infinity” program and asks Osman to lead Kilo 5 - Malcolm, Vasily, Liam, Naomi 010, and Dr Phillips.
Jul Mdama, not happy with the Arbiter’s proposed peace with the humans, speaks with Forze and wife Raia about taking action. We learn male Sangheili grow up not knowing who their father is so they can earn their own keep, and females are the deciders of bloodlines and mainly domestic duties.
Kilo 5 is introduced and informed they are to arm rebels in the Sangheili war to ensure discontent and put humans at an advantage. Admiral Hood is to visit other surviving human colonies to bring them back together.
Onyx team finds a tower with walls that part and they enter.
Osman reveals to Naomi that she was a Spartan. Venezia, an old terrorist colony, refuses assistance to a UNSC ship.
Relon mows over an old forerunner relic to plow an overgrown field. Him and his brother are hung and keep attacked by Servants of the Abiding Truth, fanatic Sangheili who were monks and got arms after the war, and still believe in the gods. Jul asked kaidon of the mdama, Levu if he supported the arbiter, and he did. Jul believes he could discipline the Abiding Truth group to rebel against Arbiter for turning them against the gods. Assassination, while respectable, wouldn’t do much when fighting a war.
Lucy falls through magic wall and disappears? Osman reveals the Spartan secret with Naomi and child enlistment to Kilo 5. They prepare Sangheili weapons with trackers to discover where faults are in leadership. They prepare to meet ‘Telcam in new llaneli. Spenser was keeping track of the system and was asked to pull back. Lucy shoots and kills a single engineer for fear it had a detonation device. She feels guilty, but hears more. Weapons are exchanged to Telcam, with both sides suspicious of the others true motive. They find a human named Tom Muir hiding near the exchange spot.
We learn Telcam is field master of the servants of abiding truth after Jul and Forze visit him to ask for help against the Arbiter and humans. An engineer tinkers with Lucy’s helmet to improve audio, and attempts to fix her speech muscles so she can speak again. Miranda Keyes is Halsey’s daughter. Colonel Ackerson is confirmed dead, who Parangosky originally wanted to lead the Spartan 4 program with Halsey under him. Tom is obnoxious on the spy ship, but oblivious to the arms deal.
The extraction of Spenser on Reynes goes south and they have to kill some jackals. They take weapons. They plan to drop Spenser and Tom off on Monte Cassino. They also wanted to help evacuate the stranded Ariadne when they see it blow up.
Halsey and team continue looking for Lucy, while Halsey keeps pondering the S-III program and alterations to the brain they went through to be more aggressive. She is concerned they can’t function normal without meds. Jul volunteers to help Buran recover Unflinching Resolve from the shipyard. He discovers a unique forerunner panel in the forerunner temple. Port Stanley completed the transfer of Spenser and Muir to Monte Cassino, but not before Venezia fires on Monte and Monte blows up a ground based turret. Osman makes a note she wants to return to see what’s up. Lucy converses with an engineer named Prone to Drift through her helmet interface. Engineer confused that they are in Dyson Sphere but life still lives. This lets Lucy know there is a way to communicate with the outside. Jul and the team successfully bring Unflinching Resolve to Mdama territory. Fred finds a forerunner looking town while Halsey and Kelly wait for Lucy.
Osman reveals more details about the SII kidnappings and SIII program to the crew. They see a jiralhanae transport with a Huragok aboard they wish to capture. Osman says ONI has captured one engineer before, but need several to be truly efficient and have them fix each other and make more. They EMP the ship and bring it to their hangar to rescue. After killing the brutes, they rescue the engineer Requires Adjustment who is alone. They find weapons aboard originally given to Telcam, causing a mystery.
In the sphere the team continues looking around. Still tension between Mendez and Halsey. They find mostly empty shells of buildings, with some dissolving and appearing doors/furniture. It appears unfinished. Osman plans to stage some dead jackals in the dropship to send back to Mdama to stir up more trouble. Parangosky is happy with the Huragok capture, and informs Osman that they found where Halsey went. Jul and Telcam wait for the brute Manus to show up with the engineer and weapons, but find the ship with dead inside and the staged jackal attack. They check the comms logs which point to Venezia. Halsey and Mendez continue to argue over the ethics of SII kidnappings and genes versus SIII volunteers and alterations and natural motivation. Halsey continues to decode the symbols and interprets a symbol as garage, perhaps as a way to leave after the flood were cleansed. Lucy admits to Prone that she doesn’t speak because she feels guilt for her family and friends being dead and she isn’t. Prone says her team is in the citadel, and is frustrated he can’t fix Lucy. Lucy convinced him to take her back and she won’t let them hurt him.
Osman shares the news of the funeral in Voi for lost warriors, including master chief. She also shares Admiral Hood plans to visit Sangheilios for a peace treaty with arbiter. In frustration with Telcam not telling him the whole truth, Jul follows Telcam to the weapon exchange place, and gets captured by Naomi and the group. Lucy returns to the group only having been gone for hours in her time versus days for everyone else. Prone leads Halsey to a hangar with many ships and dozens of engineers, all fit with slipspace technology that could drastically improve human technology. Prone admits the forerunners left the facility unfinished with no additional instructions. Prone won’t let them communicate with the outside to keep the sphere safe. They must communicate with a forerunner or one of their own to feel safe. Halsey keeps pushing Prone and Lucy snaps, punching Halsey and yelling No.
Jul resists interrogation so they use Adj to look at records in his armor to learn who he is. They learn about his name and that he knows Telcam. They prepare to send Phillips with Hood on his diplomacy visit. after the Lucy punch, Mendez and Halsey have another blow up about the ethics of the Spartan programs, the instability of the SIIIs and Halsey’s motivations to just be the smartest person in the room. Prone appears sentimental towards Lucy, and finally says she must be fixed and allows a message to be sent to the outside. Halsey transmits and Parangosky responds somewhat coy.
Phillips blackmails Jul and threatens to shame him if he doesn’t help them. Osman reveals after they escort Admiral Hood on Sangheilios, they are to leave for Onyx and extract Halsey. She explains how Halsey is dangerous, kidnapped children, kidnapped Kelly, convinced Hood to send Spartans to Onyx, and can’t be trusted. This stirs up the team and Naomi who has mixed emotions now about Halsey. None of the Spartans have ever asked about their history, which BB has from Reach. Hood and Arbiter have a brief conversation and agree to a cease fire, with mention that other factions and groups may still hold contempt. Phillips expressed interest in Sangheili culture, so Arbiter invited him back to Vadam to see historical sites. Osman agrees to train him and send him down. Halsey informs Parangosky that the engineers will cooperate in letting them in. P says that they have an engineer that can coordinate the entry as well. Prone agrees to create new engineers to oversee the movement and installation of the forerunner tech in the human ships, since the current engineers are assigned to protect the sphere. P says flood are destroyed, cease fire with elites, and master chief and cortana missing for 5 months after preventing halos from firing. Also Miranda Keyes dead. This crushes Halsey and has an effect on blue team as well. Halsey requests the sphere be named Trevelyan, after Kurts real last name to honor him.
Kilo 5 lands on the sphere after the engineers open it. They arrest Halsey and she is proud her Spartans didn’t put up a fight, as much as Kelly wanted to. Halsey recognized Naomi and Serin both. Halsey originally told blue team Serin had died as she couldn’t walk after surgery, but she had been reassigned to ONI. Jul is brought to an ONI research facility on Trevelyan. He decides lies and deceit are his best chance at escape rather than force. He meets Dr Magnusson. Vaz prevents the Spartans from talking to Halsey aboard the ship. She is scheduled to be transferred and taken away. Naomi asks Vaz to read her file and let her know if it’s safe to read. He sees her mom committed suicide after her clone died, and father was on a planet that was glassed and complained for hers it wasn’t her real daughter that was returned to him. Vaz contemplated killing Halsey, but BB talked him out of it. The teams attend the memorial at Voi.
Phillips is deployed to Sangheilios with a fragment of BB for monitoring and lethal injection if needed. He asks Arbiter if he could visit the most ancient sites, and study evolution of their language, and to get an arum which amuses Arbiter. Phillips wants to see if he can get traces of the forerunners to link to other Halo locations. He amuses a Sangheili pilot by solving the arum, and saying not all humans can do it. Osman is finally briefed on the Infinity project which is a culmination of all Forerunner technology, including what Halsey found. Del Rio is the captain. Halsey is interrogated by Parangosky, who although approved all SII activities, was largely unaware of the cloning and furious Halsey was incompetent enough to claim she didn’t know the clones would all die soon. She reveals the SIV program and says the SIIs and IIIs would have the chance to join. She shows Halsey her memorial on Voi, explaining her status would remain that way until she decided otherwise.
Kilo 5 arrives at Venezia at the call of Spenser. Vaz tells Naomi her background. Osman refuses to read her own file again. Phillips says he is in range of Onton where Telcam operates. Spenser picks them up in a rag tag warthog with a fake ID as an electrician. He explains the planet is a jumble of all species - grunts, jackals, brutes, humans, and brings Vaz and Mal to his home. They read through files of some of the human terrorists, and Vaz catches one head guy as Staffan Sentzke, Naomi’s father. He is gathering ordnance to attack earth. Spenser knows they are there to track weapons, but they now have another motive.
Phillips is given a wooden arum made by monks, opens it and finds a note from Telcam written in English and warning him that the planet is dangerous and would provide him shelter. Telcam then appears and asks Phillips if he knows Jul, then an explosion happens and knocks out Phillips camera and feed. Osman orders everyone back to the ship to extract Phillips.
