Veterinarian J.T. "Rush" Rushford isn't looking forward to Christmas. It'll be his first without his beloved four-year-old daughter, Claire. A year ago, Rush's wife divorced him for another man--then broke his heart further by revealing that Claire was her lover's child. The final blow was Rush losing all parental rights. Now he's in Branding Iron, Texas, with his mobile vet practice, just hoping to get through the season--until something like a Christmas miracle happens . . .
Turns out Claire's parents are going on an extended cruise, leaving Rush to take her for the holidays. It's bittersweet, knowing that he and Claire will have to part again, maybe forever. . . . Until a smart, not to mention beautiful, lady judge with a pregnant cat and an aging mutt takes a liking to the vet and his little girl and gets involved. With her on their side, and love in their hearts, this Christmas just might be the most joyous of all . . .
"The story is full of Christmas spirit . . . Those looking for a little pre-holiday pick-me-up will find plenty to enjoy here." --RT Book Reviews on Just a Little Christmas

I’m assuming these new JD books are being ghostwritten by someone as Janet Dailey sadly passed away nearly ten years ago, but I am enjoying them no matter who is writing them. The Christmas Tree Ranch series is great and I really enjoyed IT’S A CHRISTMAS THING, which featured Rush, the traveling vet we met in book one, and Tracy, the town judge. Rush’s daughter Claire also plays a big part in the book as well as a rescue cat and her litter of kittens (I love cute pets in books, so I was sold!) I love the sweet Western Christmas tone of these books and will definitely read on to book three. 5/5 stars.
This is a Christmas Cowboy Romance, and this is the second book in the Christmas Tree Ranch series. I enjoyed every second I spend with this book, and the characters in this book was so great. I love all the people characters and all the animal characters. The storyline was slow to get moving, but I still really enjoyed it. I also I love the small town in this book.
It's just a feel good, fun christmas book!! You get all the Christmas feelings and activities!
I love all of these characters!! I love Rush and his business, the Ranch, Tracy, Clara. I love them all. The town is so cute and cozy, it snows, and we've got the found family trope.
The only thing people will gripe about is the kid... she is 5 years old but talks like she is 10. The author makes her seem "wise" but really it's just not believable! But it's okay, I didn't mind it. As long as you don't take her super seriously.
I really have a fun time with these books. They are the perfect christmas reads!
I really enjoyed this sweet, romantic Christmas story by Janet Dailey. I fell in love with Rush, his adorable step daughter Claire and the woman he falls in love with, Tracy. Christmas, cowboys, a stray pregnant cat....so much love and romance all wrapped up in one book♥️. A beautiful, heartwarming Christmas story I highly recommend.
Janet Dailey is one of my favorite authors and she has another great success in my opinion with this Christmas story. I love the setting of a Christmas tree ranch and the fact that Janet includes rescues of animals others don't want. Don't miss this heartwarming Christmas story.
A charming Christmas read in a day. I love the animals in the book and how lovely Rush is, both as a father and a man. I believe that all men who love animals are really good people. Also love how mature Claire is for a 4 year old, though that can be pretty unrealistic but it’s a Christmas book and everything will work out in the end, even the romance between Rush and Tracey.
OVERALL: A boring, sweet and clean, zero tension, romance-light book with completely bland characters and no interest; I've already forgotten it.
TW: previous death of a spouse, grief, previous infidelity, divorce, paternity issues, death of a pet, infertility
This was just a two star read for me. I found this book through my library app, it was Christmas-y and instantly available, so I got the audio and jumped right in. For me the biggest problem with this book was that it was boring. The characters felt pretty stock, I didn't feel like I knew almost anything about them, and the 4 year old read way too old in my opinion.
Tracy starts the book as a widow of 18 months and not ready to be dating or having feelings yet. That was fine with me, and Rush immediately respects this about her and kind of probes very slightly and then totally backs off--he'd be fine competing with another man, but not with a ghost. And this is the situation for the first ~60%: she isn't emotionally available and they are both against anything starting. Then suddenly around the 60% mark Rush is flirting with her and decides she needs "a nudge in the right direction" aka he's actively pursuing her because she needs to be ready to date again.... I just found that presumptuous and contrary to what the first half the book had been, especially when she just goes with it!
The two adults had spent essentially zero time together and had multiple moments of "I/we aren't ready for a relationship" and then suddenly were declaring their love for each other?? That felt like it came out of left field to me.
There was no tension throughout this book. I never felt like anything was happening that was intriguing or dramatic, it was all practical childcare arrangements and polite dinner conversation. The only two sections where this was *barely* better were and the bleak moment.
It's a Christmas Thing is the second book in The Christmas Tree Ranch series by Janet Dailey. This series is a cute romance cowboy series, I didn't know how I was going to feel about it but I'm loving the series, so this was an easy 5 star rating!!!
Veterinarian Rush Rushford lives on The Christmas Tree Ranch with his partners Travis and Conner. On the off season they take care of horses and cut down Christmas trees for the Christmas season. Since the last novel Maggie and Travis started dating, Conner is still looking for someone special. The 3 best friends are still selling Christmas trees with their other partner, Hank, Travis's dad. They now have cows on the ranch and still care for Bucket, their cute fluffy dog.
Rush recieves a phone call in the middle of the night from the beautiful judge, Tracy because a car showed up on her front steps, she doesn't know what's wrong with the car and doesn't want to do with her, so she calls Rush to come over and check it out, where they learn that the cat is pregnant and Tracy must care for her until she haves her babies. The minute Rush lays eyes on Tracy he instantly falls in love with her. Rush learns that he's in competition with Tracy's late husband Steve. The only thing Tracy has left of Steve are his pictures on their mantel and their old beloved dog, Murphy.
Rush and his ex-wife Sonya divorce and Rush loses his parental rights with his daughter Claire. Rush learns that Claire is not his blood daughter and that Sonya was having an affair with another man named Andre. Rush recieves a phone call from Sonya's caregivers that Rush needs to take Claire for Christmas because Sonya and Andre are on a cruise and their caregivers need to go to a family emergency.
3.7 rounded up This story is #2 in the Christmas Tree Ranch series and takes place in Branding Iron a small Texas town. I recently read “My Kind of Christmas” and enjoyed the characters so much; I knew this would be another enjoyable read. This story centers on Veterinarian J.T. “Rush” Rushford who is not only a vet but one of the partners with the Christmas Tree Ranch business. Once again we are approaching Christmas and Rush isn’t looking forward to another Christmas without his 4-year old daughter Clara. However, this year Rush’s ex-wife and new husband are on an extended Christmas cruise and Clara is left home with the hired turns out they have a family emergency and call to see if Rush can care for Clara. Needless to say he is more than willing. There is some family drama going, and yes a sweet romance. True times I found myself yelling at Tracy ~ for a Judge she sure made decisions based on assumptions and not facts! Still a very enjoyable read! Personal Note: I have read several books in both the “Virgin Fall’ series as well as ‘The Bridgertons’ series and believe the ‘Christmas Tree Ranch’ would also make good Netflix Christmas stories!!!
Rush, a local veterinarian isn't looking forward to Christmas since his wife divorced him and took their 4 year old little girl, Claire away. Tracy is the judge in town and has adopted a pregnant cat. As Rush and Tracy get to know each other Claire is dropped off by the nanny who hasn't been paid. Vintage Janet Dailey with true love winning over adversity. Book 2 in the Christmas Tree ranch series and can be read as a stand alone. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A great story about two people who meat and think they feel an attraction, but tge time is not right for Tracy Emerson, since it has been a short time that she lost her husband. Rush has been divorced about the same length of time, but he misses his four year old daughter.
There are surprises that will keep you wanting to finish reading the book. If you like happy endings, you will enjoy this book. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
Adorable, and classic Janet Dailey. I love a good JD novel. The characters are always well written. The stories are always full of spunk and spirit. The romance all though expected also has passion.
It's a Christmas Thing was a very quick read. It's the second book in The Christmas Tree Ranch series and returns us to the small town of Branding Iron in Texas. We're immersed in all things Christmas with Christmas trees, hot chocolate and s'mores, Santa, parades and balls along with family and friends.
This is Rush and Tracy's story. He's the vet who owns the mobile business and lives on the ranch with his partners Travis and Connor. She's the judge in the small town. We meet up with them again along with many others. There are dogs and cats along with the horses, cows and coyotes. When Clara, Rush's stepdaughter who lives with her parents in Phoenix, unexpectedly makes a visit to Texas around the holidays we get to meet her and she's a gem.
There are love interests and heartwarming stories throughout along with some heartaches as well. The story has nice closure and a few potential happily ever afters. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Ms. Dailey is an author whose cowboy romances I've enjoyed for years. Her stories set at Christmas are also must reads for me.
A great follow up Christmas Romance! Clean & wholesome, but with a few moments of sexual tension. I'd rate this for mature teens anyway. Characters from the past book return & new characters join them! The Christmas Tree Ranch comes to it's busiest season after Halloween, but Rush, the veterinarian partner meets someone AND finds out the little girl he loves with all of his heart but had to leave behind, must come to stay with him until after Christmas due to a family emergency! What will happen? Read & see! You won't be sorry!
There was a lot to like about this book: a cute little girl, a family-minded man, a professional woman who also had a soft side. But man, they annoyed me with their lack of communication. 😄
It's A Christmas Thing by Janet Dailey is a small town holiday romance. Ms. Dailey has given readers a well-written story furnished with an outstanding cast of characters. Rush is the only vet in town and partners in a ranch while trying to adjust to being divorced and told his child wasn't his. Tracy is a widow and a judge that takes in a homeless cat. Tracy and Rush's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice and Chistmas fun. I enjoyed reading It's A Christmas Thing and look forward to my next book by Janet Dailey. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I won from Goodreads. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an ok read. There are two things I quite disliked about the story, things that may not particularly bother other people, but that were enough to negatively affect how much I enjoyed this book.
The first is that Tracy's husband died 2 years before the action in the book and despite the fact that she wasn't over his death, everyone else in the book decided it was time for her to move on--and naturally they were right and she came to understand that she was wrong. It infuriates me when this happens. Two years is not an unreasonable length of time for someone to mourn the loss of a beloved spouse. For some people five years isn't enough, others never get over such a loss, and that's ok. I hated that she wasn't allowed to decide on her own that she was ready for a new relationship. Had she been considering ending her mourning on her own and was then encouraged by others to move on, I wouldn't have had a problem--and there's absolutely no reason that Daily couldn't have done that, or had her husband die several years earlier. But she didn't.
The other is that I have nothing but contempt for people who know they are unable to have children and who aren't up-front about it as soon as they start seriously considering getting into a relationship. It is completely unfair to the other person to allow them to become emotionally involved, knowing that they want a family, and not let them know that they can't have a biological family with them. That is just about the most selfish thing I can think one person can do to another. The fact that Tracy kept moaning to him that she really liked him but that something was holding her back from a relationship that she wasn't ready to talk about was just contemptible. All of the outrage I felt on her behalf for being forced to end her grieving process was lost by this action.
As a Christmas story, it was likeable enough. Clara was a lovely child and the other characters in the book were well-written. The pacing was good and it had kittens. I didn't hate the book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to.
IT’S A CHRISTMAS THING is a romance that will pull at your heartstrings as it gives you a taste of a beautiful country Christmas celebration. What you need to know before deciding to pick up this story can be found in the Cover Description. What you won’t find there is the emotional tug that Claire will have, the heartbreak that Rush and Tracy both have faced for different reasons and the healing that happens when Rush has the chance to spend time with the little girl who will always be his daughter in his heart.
I enjoyed returning to Janet Dailey’s writing after many years away. I know that Ms. Dailey passed away several years ago, so I do not know if this is an earlier release that’s been reprinted that I missed, or if her writing name is ghostwritten by another writer now. A very frustrating search gave me no true answers to those questions. Nonetheless, IT’S A CHRISTMAS THING is an enchanting, tender romance that will bring out the emotions in even the most hardened heart – Claire, puppies, kittens and second chances will do that very nicely, in my opinion. I had fun, and if the thought of a country Christmas, reuniting loved ones, and the chance at happiness, a love for a lifetime tempts you then you’ll enjoy this story.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This book is a fun read. Rush is a vet whose little girl was taken from him when his wife informed him that she loved someone else and that person was the biological father of the child he thought was his own. He moved to Branding Iron Texas and went into business with two of his buddies and also began running a mobile vet office. He gets a call from a female judge (Tracy) he has admired in the past. She has a stray cat she has taken in that is expecting kittens and an old dog she doesn’t want to die since he is the last living memory of her deceased husband.
It is the holiday season in Branding Iron and everyone but Tracy is getting into the Christmas spirit. When Rush gets a call from his little girl’s caretakers stating they have a family emergency and can’t care for her and that her parents are on a Cruise until after the holidays, Rush consents to keep her. The precious little girl revives Tracy’s Christmas spirit and makes Christmas extra special for Rush.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
