Prior to writing, Trice Hickman's diverse professional career included work in both corporate and non-profit organizations. Currently, she is putting the finishing touches on her second novel, and a third book is already underway. She resides in Washington, D.C., with her husband. "
The Other Side is dramatic fiction by Trice Hickman. The story features three women from three different decades who share a birthday. Bernadette Gibson and Tess Sinclair are cousins. Arizona Mays works at the same hospital as Bernadette, so the women share connections beyond the shared birthday. The story is told through the alternating viewpoints of the three women and also over different timeframes. This could have been confusing but the author handles it well with appropriate chapter headers.
Bernadette Gibson is turning fifty and she’s not happy, even though she’s overcome her humble beginnings and survived a disastrous personal relationship. Her outlook changes when she meets Cooper, “Coop”, Dennis. Bernadette doesn’t approve of Coop’s past, but he appears to be a changed man, and he’s certainly changed Bernadette, for the better. Can she overlook the secret she’s just discovered?
Testimony “Tess” Sinclair is Bernadette’s cousin, and a popular best-selling author. Tess is turning forty and has reached a roadblock in her personal life and in her writing. Her ex is recently married and giving to someone else the life he promised her. Anger has a stranglehold on her until she visits Bernadette and meets the love of her life. Can she let go of her anger and fully commit to Maceo?
Arizona Mays is turning thirty and is ready to break the vow of celibacy she has with her fiancé, Chris. They’ve been waiting for two years, two months and two days, but feel that it’s time to be fully intimate with each other. Arizona surrenders herself to her man and expects only joy, but finds out that he has been keeping an important secret from her. Can she still marry him, knowing what she knows?
Bernadette and Tess have always been close and turned to each other during times of trouble. Arizona and Bernadette bond and she fits into the little group perfectly. The women meet regularly to share their problems and offer advice, comfort and support. Their goal is to get each other “to the other side”.
The Other Side is a great read. The characters are fully-fleshed and relatable. The dialogue is fresh and vibrant. The plot has unexpected twists. I hope there are follow-up novels, because there are some loose ends not addressed in the ending. I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers of dramatic and multicultural fiction.
My thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
This book was a pleasant surprise. I almost stopped reading just because I wanted something specific and this didn’t fit the bill at first, but I kept listening and was sucked in. This book was so good!! It centers around three women of different ages that share the same birthday. I think the alternating pov threw me for a minute, but then I got used to it. Each woman has been through different things in their lives that have brought about its own bitternesses. What I loved seeing in this story is the way each woman had to let go off that said pain to move forward in their lives. I love the real topics that were discussed in this story. Arizona’s story in particular gave me a lot of food for thought. It raises the question of if size really matters and would you break off your engagement if your man didn’t “measure up”, and if he didn’t know how to pleasure his intended. This storyline alone was super fascinating, but all three of the ladies storylines were riveting.
The Other Side introduces us to three different but similar ladies that share the same birthday. Tess and Bernadette are cousin’s, Bernadette and Arizona work together but really do not know each other. Each lady is celebrating a milestone birthday and have decided to spend their day alone with just themselves.
Arizona is turning 30 and has just found out her fiancé has a little secret that may be a deal breaker for their relationship.
Tess is turning 40 who just found out that the man she loved and gave two years of her life to cheated on her on her 39th birthday and got married on her 40th. Will she ever find love?
Bernadette who is is turning 50 has moved to a new town and started a new job is not really looking to open herself up to new love after she found out some devastating news about her fiancé and her world as she knows was turned up side down, or so she thinks.
I enjoyed this book, I listened to the audio version and it was hilarious, Tess is no joke and Arizona had me rolling. The way it ended I know there has to be a second book and I am ready for it.
Bernadette; her cousin, Tess; and their friend, Arizona; have all experienced the other side of love that breaks your heart and knocks you to your knees. Especially if you don't have a strong support system to hold you upright.
These three loving and independent women, supported and encouraged each other through some, somewhat insurmountable challenges.
I hope there is a book # 2 somewhere in the future, because there are too many unanswered questions that need to be resolved.
When I say this book is in my top ten of ALL time , believe me . I have laughed so much because I can relate to Bernadette , Tes & Arizona . I will never forget the name Arizona Mayes LoL This book made me think outside the box & also put things in perspective regarding forgiveness . There has to be a part two, because you can’t just leave us like that Trice .
I saw another author post about Trice Hickman’s new book, Blindsided. When I read the synopsis, I learned that it’s the sequel to this book. It piqued my interest, so I decided to check it out. There were a few instances where I thought the writing could’ve been better. At times it felt repetitive. She seemed to try too hard to flex her expansive vocabulary. Despite that, the actual storytelling was great. The plot was interesting from the very beginning. I really loved the strong bond that blossomed between the women. Watching the drama unfold for each of them was such an enjoyable ride. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. As the book neared its end, I realized that I absolutely have to read the sequel. I need to know what’s going to happen! I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
I really enjoy reading books that focus on older women. The main characters are 30, 40, 50 all with the same birthday. They bond over men, health, and family. The men in their lives add to the story with complications of their own. When I finished the story I immediately started reading the sequel Blindsided.
TRICE IS BACK! Three successful women, all born on the same day. All burdened with their painful pass, create a Sister Circle, that will help each of them to over come the pain in their pass and emotional and physical obstacles in their present. Still writing with her creative story line and great character development, you will be captivated from the first page.
I really liked this book as I like Hickman’s writing. I’m hoping that this is the beginning of a sequel based on how it ended. It was a good read with with realistic issues that were addressed in regards to dating & relationships.
The Other Side is about 30,40 and 50yr women who navigate life after after heartbreak/ a HUGE (or small ◡̈) relationship woe. This read was mature, sometimes funny and realistic (for the most part).
It started off so promising. Getting to know the characters and their previous partners was something ELSE! I’m sorry sis nem went through all that. Definitely had my attention. Then the book evened out and became a little predictable.
The way it ends definitely makes you want to have book 2 of standby because why would Arizona do that??? It couldn’t be me!
Bernadette (50), Tess (40), and Arizona (30) cheer each other on, give each other advice, and support each other through difficult things. I loved getting to know these three and especially loved seeing friendships between women of different generations. Character driven.
On to Blindsided. Oh how I feel for the ladies. Is it possible to get everything you want from a partner? Can you settle for almost perfect with a huge thorn thrown in the mix?
Bernadette Gibson is a very successful business woman. The only area that is not successful is her love life. Bernadette is turning fifty and she thinks having a successful relationship is not in the cards for her. But when Cooper “Coop” Dennis comes into her life, she quickly changes her mind. When Bernadette discovers a secret about Coop’s past, it causes her to reevaluate their relationship. Testimony “Tess” Sinclair is a bestselling novelist that’s approaching her fortieth birthday. Tess is devastated when she learns that her ex-boyfriend got married.
To get away from it all, Tess goes to a small town to visit her cousin Bernadette. Tess ends finds an unexpected love connection but her secret may destroy it all. Arizona May is a make-up artist that is in a loving, committed relationship with her fiancé. Arizona and her fiancé promised to remain celibate until their wedding night. The day before Arizona’s thirtieth birthday, they decide to give in to temptation. But now Arizona is rethinking their wedding plans after finding out a disturbing secret. What will become of these three women?
The Other Side is a novel that was definitely worth the wait. Trice Hickman brought us a good contemporary story that shows three women at different pivotal points in their lives. What makes this story interesting is how each of these women are celebrating their milestone birthdays while trying to add romance to their lives. Hickman created very realistic characters that readers will be able to relate to. Shocking twists, secrets, and humor makes this book from Trice Hickman a must read and a perfect book club choice.
This storyline was so good, it held my attention from the very beginning until the end and left me wanting more. The characters were well developed and you can feel their emotions of happiness, sadness, hurt, pain, anger, love and so much more. Three of the characters are going through life ups and downs due to past and present relationships. Tess who is an author, her ex-boyfriend Antwan married someone else and Tess is angry. After all Tess has put up with Antwan’s lying and cheating ways. Bernadette’s last relationship was five years ago, ended when she realized her ex was using, lying and cheating on her. Arizona who has a fiancé that is every woman’s dream, loving, caring, muscular, tall dark and handsome but he has a small problem in the sexual behavior department. After reading about what each character is going through, you can see true life situations that could happen to anyone and it makes you think what would I do if that type of situation was going on in my life. I love reading this author’s books and I highly recommend this book to read, there is romance, drama, plots and twist I didn’t see coming.. Cassandra H.
Great read, so much to think about. I felt for Arizona even though her description and reaction to Chris’s no love making have me screaming for her. A good man. Bernadette took the advice of Arizona, let go old hurts and found her soulmate. And then there is Tess, bugging out over her ex, she took the advice from her friends and found her man. So many issues they to address. Can’t wait for next book with them
This book is about 3 women all hurt from past relationships. These women evolved & find love again. But it’s not all smooth sailing, their are a few bumps in the road.
The Other Side is a tale of love and life of three women that happen to share the same birthdate and are a decade a part from each other. That in itself made the story intriguing.
Bernadette Gibson, related to Tess, is turned fifty, with a rough go in the relationship department. She is on a quest for new beginnings. With a new town, job and totally taken by surprise....Cooper "Coop" Dennis. A relationship wasn't in the cards for these two, but the attraction can't be denied. Things begin to look up for Bernadette and Coop is believed to be a changed man until she uncovers a secret. Will she walk away from her chance at real love?
Testimony "Tess" Sinclair, best selling author and cousin to Bernadette. She just turned forty, has had a disastrous breakup with cheating boyfriend and having trouble moving on. When she finds that the cheating boyfriend can commit and decides to marry, it sends her into overdrive and a case of unhealthy social media stalking. When Bernadette invites her for a visit for a change of scenery to finish her book, she accepts.
As chance would have it stomach leads her to a chance at a new beginning. When she feels the need to complain about staff at the restaurant, she meets Maceo. it was evident the two has chemistry. Will she let the pass hurts and a harden heart keep her from a great guy and a chance of real love?
Arizona Mays had just turned thirty and happen to meet Bernadette when the two decide to treat themselves for their birthday. These two bond over things they have in common and become fast friends. Now, Arizona's issue is a little different from the Bernadette and Tess, she is engaged to be married to an almost perfect man. There is just one "big" thing that just may keep her from joining him down the aisle.
This story keeps you engaged. The author highlighted a few sensitive subjects. Through these characters, we see how damaging secrets, lies, love and forgiveness can change ones' live course.
I really enjoyed this one, but would have liked to have closure with the couples and hope there is more to come.
Thank you Kensington and NetGalley for the opportunity to review and provide my opinion of this title.
Featuring: D. C., Chicago, North Carolina, Domestic Violence, Profanity, Vandalism, Sex, Small Towns, Career Women 30-50 year olds,
Rating as a movie: R for sexual content
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
My thoughts: Page 25 of 264 - Lmbo! This this exact type of humorous drama I need in my life. I'm all set to read all of her books based off of these 3 chapters. 116 - The writing isn't great, but the story is fantastic. 207 - So good! I'm very tired or I would have finished it.
I love when books use song titles and then have little in common with the theme of the song. This book was the perfect mix of messy sophisticated domestic drama, until I got to the end. I just knew it was going to be 5 stars, but it fell short. This book was a 4.5 because the writing wasn't the best but I was expecting it to be a 4.5 rounded up to a 5, but somehow the last 20% of the book got it rounded down to a 4, which is "I really liked this book," instead of "I loved this book and can't wait to reread it!" I was up for about 18 hours so I hope that didn't affect my reading experience much. I actually reread from chapter 18 after I barely finished 19, because it was a little hazy. I what I didn't like about the writing was the over explaining and telling instead of showing. The story started to do more telling towards the end. I'm excited to read the next book. Goodreads doesn't have this as a series but my library does. I already know I will be reading more from Trice Hickman after I'm done with this series, she's a good storyteller.
Recommend to others?: Yes. I found this book to be fun and modern.
The Other Side is a great piece fiction by Trice Hickman. Three women from three different decades share a birthday. Arizona Mays works at the same hospital as Bernadette, while Bernadette Gibson and Tess Sinclair are cousins. Although Bernadette Gibson has an awesome job with a good income and a nice house, she is turning fifty and she’s not happy. Testimony “Tess” Sinclair is Bernadette’s cousin, and a popular best-selling author. Tess is turning forty and has reached a roadblock in her personal life and in her writing. Arizona Mays is turning thirty and is committed to a vow of celibacy with her fiancé, Chris.
Circumstances bring these three ladies together in a manner that they do not realize will be beneficial to them all. Bernadette and Tess have always shared a close relationship. When Arizona is added to the mix, she fits in perfectly. These women share their stories with each other, providing support and love through all the trials and tribulations, and through this they are able to reach “the other side”.
This is a wonderful read that will keep you turning the page until the very end. The plot has some unexpected twists and turns to keep you guessing. I hope that there will be a follow-up to this story because, in my opinion there are some loose ends that I would like to see resolved. Thank you to Kensington, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to review this book.
Author, Trice Hickman, has amazingly outdone herself in this novel! Starting from the first chapter to the last chapter of the book was nothing but suspense, surprise, and shock. She introduces her audience to Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona. These women are beautiful and successful in their own way yet struggle with trust, secrets, betrayal, and intimacy in their relationships with men. They yearn for companionship, trust, intimacy and most of all unconditional love. Bernadette, successful businesswoman, desperately want to find love again after being used so many times by men. She finally finds her soulmate but believes he has a buried secret. Tess, best-selling author, seems to have a hard time keeping a man. She starts to doubt and question her own internal state and feelings. Arizona, a single mother and entrepreneur, struggles with her relationship on a physical level, contemplating whether to give up or secure what she has with her man. Past behaviors made these women strong, by sharing their concerns and emotions with each other. Trice’s novel will have you laughing, wondering, shaking your head, and fulfilled at the same time. Great Book!
This book was a page turner. The lives of three women; Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona. Bernadette was a successful businesswoman but not good at relationships. She decided to enjoy the single life. Upon reaching her fiftieth birthday she meets Cooper, a nightclub owner and businessman in the small town in NC. Tess who is Bernadette’s cousin is approaching her fortieth birthday and does not have good luck in relationships either. Tess is a bestselling novelist. Tess finds out that her ex was recently married which brings on my hurt. Tess decides to visit her cousin Bernadette in Bourbon, NC so she can finish writing her next novel. Tess finds unexpected love. Arizona is a single mom and a makeup artist, and she is a few months away from marrying the love of her life; Chris. Arizona is approaching her thirtieth birthday. She is confused if she should marry Chris due to the issues that he has. This book had twists and turns. Need a part 2…
When I picked up Blindsided as part of my color cover challenge for April I had no idea it was part of a Duology. I instantly checked out the ebook for the first part, and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
MY THOUGHTS💭: reading this duology felt like I was in the group chat with my girls😂💖! The mess was messy and the tea was top tier. Even though this book is categorized as a romance (which there is romance👀 y’all) I felt the strongest connection was the sisterhood that was formed between these three women and self love discovered along the way.
Both books follow the start, development, and continuation of the friendships between three women who share a birthday: Bernadette 50, Tess 40, and Arizona May 30. While Bernadette and Tess are cousins, I thought Hickman perfectly displayed that family and friend balance, when sometimes even your blood needs to be checked. We don’t just ride along with these women through their individual self discoveries and successes, we also ride through scamming fiancés, cheating boyfriends, new loves, unexpected journeys, and REAL TALKS. And the ride can get rough!
As someone who is 30 now but surrounds herself with women from all age groups I loved that this book showcased love, hurt, and growth at different stages of life. Trice Hickman is must read for me.
"After one too many failed relationships, businesswoman Bernadette Gibson is resigned to singlehood. Yet on the heels of her 50th birthday she meets Cooper "Coop" Dennis, a charismatic nightclub owner who literally sweeps her off her feet. But just as they're ready to make the ultimate commitment, a secret from Coop's past threatens to end their relationship.:"
Bernadette kind of pissed me off. She doesn't even have the whole story of what happened with the gun she found, but is already talking about turning the man in to authorities. I have one recommendation for Arizona, sex therapy. And Tess needs therapy. She is so selfish.
I still can't wait to see what happens in Blindsided.
This year I said I’d try my hand at reviews so here it goes...
This story tells of three successful women, all born on the same day. While two struggle with past hurts, one finds herself choosing whether she will accept her fiancé just as he is. As the three form a bond, the book also allows us to witness the three women experience their version of love.
While this book held my attention the entire time, I found myself disappointed by the abrupt ending. I was also a little shocked by Bernadette’s discovery. It just felt like it was dropped suddenly in the book. I would give this book a 3.5 , if I could, for that reason only. It felt rushed at the end. However, I am anxiously waiting for the sequel.
I always enjoy a Trice Hickman novel and this book was no exception. Three women with the same birthday having 3 monumental birthdays (30,40 and 50)bonded by life’s situations. We get to share in the lives of Bernadette, Tess and Arizona. Bernadette is 50 and has gotten a new job in a new city.... will she finally find love after so much heartache? Tess is 40 and a successful author but wants more success in her personal life. She finally finds love but will her secret keep her from happy ever after? And Arizona is 30 and has what seems to be the perfect man..... but he has one big (or should I say little) flaw.... will they be able to work past it live together in wedded bliss?
This book was very good from beginning to end! The audiobook was also very entertaining.
No spoilers from me but I know there has to be a sequel.....
Bernadette, Tess, and Arizona have become fast friends with loving or being loved problems. Bernadette is the oldest who meets and fall in love again after being hurt from years before, but the man, Cole, has a dark secret that causes her problems. Tess is forty and has also been hurt and resents her cousin, Bernadette, from moving too fast with Cole that is until she meets and falls for a man but her secret could cause trouble for them. Arizona is the youngest of the friends and has the love of a good man who she also loves but their is a big problem with him that’s causing her a big problem. As the three women become fast friends the problems that come before them they help each other out of to come to the other side
I enjoyed this story, but I thought Arizona handled her relationship with Chris all wrong. Sex is a big part of marriage and if he was not able to make the counseling sessions before we got married then the marriage would need to be postponed until this is resolved. Chris new he had a medical condition and instead of talking about how they would handle the situation before they got married his idea was to handle it through their marriage.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have been an avid reader of black fiction for years but this author touched on subjects that were previously uncharted territory and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasn't thrilled with the shady past storyline that creeped in toward the end but the glimpse into the future of the characters made it a smooth transition right up to the very end. Great Job Trice Hickman.☺
This book is about real-life issues among women. The story is about three women from different walks of life that becomes true friends. There is a bond between them that helps each of them to discover love, life, and happiness. The book started off slow for me but the more I read the more I couldn't put it down. I truly love the story line and could relate to some of the issues they were facing.
Absolutely loved it from beginning to end! Bernadette, Tess and Arizona all shared a birthday, each reaching a milestone but grappling with issues that hinder their best selves and best lives. Their stories were relatable and relevant to spark important conversations amongst women about love, career, family and health. What an entertaining read! I’m looking forward to the sequel because it’ll be interesting to see where these women pick up after the difficult revelations.
