Is Eleanor a player trapped in the Fringe Realms or is she a character created to live inside the game?

Ready Player One meets Westworld in this new sci-fi fantasy series.

Eleanor Walker wakes in a forest with vague memories of her life, no possessions, and a silver band strapped to her wrist. She’s not sure what's strangest about the next event – meeting spiders bigger than a human, or the fire that shoots from her hands.

She steps further into the dark and comes across three guys who are part of this unfamiliar new world. Jay the cleric with muscles worthy of a warrior, Dean the smart-mouthed assassin, and her real-life friend Aidan—who can now transform into something terrifying.

All four are convinced they’re stuck in a game and their combined powers create a team as strong as the characters they once played online. The group journey through their new world filled with hazardous quests and rewards, where working and levelling up together brings the four closer. Now they need to figure out how to reach the end game and escape.

Everything changes when they discover somebody hidden inside the game. Ethan has dangerous secrets to share and information that threatens Eleanor and her companions' future.

Why is Eleanor in the game and what will she find when she reaches the fringes of her new world?

Fringe Realms: Mage is a slow burn reverse harem for fans of dystopian science fiction and fantasy. The book contains gamelit/LitRPG elements.

Please note: This is not a 'pure' LitRPG novel but contains a levelling system, stats, and a character whose journey is tied to her character abilities and progress in-game.

This book is written in British English.

First things first, this is NOT litrpg. You'll be disappointed if that's what you want. There are light gaming elements, but it's first and foremost a slowburn fantasy romance (and man o man emphasis on the slow).

The story is intriguing; there are some ominous hints dropped at the start, and then - surprise! - Eleanor wakes up inside a game. The story follows her and her friends as they try to figure out how to get back to real life - with some interesting developments as to what that real life may or may not be.

Eleanor's an okay character, I don't love or hate her; the guys feel a bit interchangeable so far, but I think that's partly because the story has been focused on the story, rather than on the relationship. I don't love that the only other slightly developed female character in the book is a semi-antagonist; I think it's lazy when romance stories set up girl-vs-girl plot lines.

So far, I think it's a bit mediocre - it could be a really great litrpg or a really great RH romance, but it hasn't focused much on either, so it falls somewhere in the middle for me. I'll see how it develops in the second book, I guess.

Before I dig into the nitty, gritty of Fringe Realms, let me say that this is a story with characters who are gamers, not necessarily a story meant for READERS who are gamers. Gaming elements are part of the plot, conflict, and the characters' choices, but at a basic enough level that Fringe Realms is SUPER approachable for readers who know almost nothing about gaming whatsoever.

That being said, if you're an experienced gamer who's looking for a story that will have highly advanced gaming elements, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. The blurb says "light gaming elements" for a reason, so just be aware, so that you can read and enjoy with a fair mind :)

Onward-

Fringe Realms is a bit different from what I usually read. Sure, there's magic, mythical beings, and a lot of other fantasy elements that I generally find entertaining, but I've never been drawn to stories that were based around a video game. Really, I'm a fan of Swallow's other series, so I knew that I had to take a chance on something new with FR.

El is shy, someone who always wanted to be in the background. She uses her gaming as an escape from the real world, from the person that she is when she's not logged on to these cyber worlds. As someone who loves to read because it lets you travel into totally different places and personalities, I can relate. What it seems El really needs is a big PUSH, something to make her become more than who she's currently allowing herself to be. Enter Fringe Realms.

She's a dynamic character, so it's fun seeing the way she changes when she's thrust into this miraculous, overwhelming, and completely confusing situation- finding yourself stuck in a game is not a scenario most people are prepared to deal with. However, I think she's smart, crafty, and I like the little bits of backbone that start to appear when she finds herself taking charge.

There are a few men who band together around El, and each of them have two personas to deal with: who they are back home, and the skills and tasks that are piled on to them as part of the game. There's definitely some chemistry between them, but this is a slow burn, so, while the attractions start to become known, there's not much action. They're all still working on building up their connections to each other, their trust, to find a way out of the game.

What I found interesting were the little hints we get about how El and the others wound up in the game in the first place. It's not just something extraordinary or magical, there's something kind of sinister behind it, something to do with people who have too much time and too much money, but we don't know everything by the end. There are enough little hints to wet your curiosity, but there's definitely a lot more to learn.

Overall, Fringe Realms was an interesting start to a new series, and I was glad that I tried something different. The gaming elements were enough to make the "world-building" believable without overwhelming the reader who knows nothing about gaming. I'm looking forward to what's coming next!

Eleanor is only existing. She has a dead end job cleaning, lost her boyfriend to someone he met online, and spends most of her days avoiding real contact. Gaming is her escape, her true pleasure; the place where she can be successful, powerful, and live out her dreams. But when she wakes up in a forest with a silver band strapped to her wrist feeding her information about herself, her environment, and the enormous spiders heading in her direction, it seems as if her real life has merged with her gaming one. As she travels across the land, she joins fellow explorers: Jay a cleric with the body of a warrior, Dean an assassin, Zara, a paladin who may not be trustworthy, and her real-life sweet, gentle friend Aidan a terrifying shifter warlock who may be evil. Then there's Ethan who claims to be a former player who is now hidden in the game. Quests and rewards, goblins, elves, and dwarfs, unicorns and dragons. They need to figure out how to reach the end game and escape but what will happen if they can reach the fringe?

Pure fun! I am not a gamer. I am one of those people who freaks out when a controller is placed in my hands, however, as the mother of boys, I am extremely familiar with the virtual world. I believe that even for non-gamers with no prior knowledge this book would still make perfect sense. anyway, I loved it. The world building, the gaming elements, and character development were multi-layered. At first glance, it would seem that this would be a dream come true for Eleanor and her fellow adventurers. They are in an actual game! But they lack control. They don't get to choose their character, their game path. The expertise they have acquired in the real-world is gone. They are playing but not in the way they are used to. It's an interesting dynamic and the results were sometimes unexpected. Plus, Eleanor's natural sharp intelligence kept her wary when things seemed out of place or just not right. I love her intelligence, her constant questioning. I also loved the guys. Zara was fine at times but at times she was too much and it was clear that something else is going on with her, a developer's insert maybe? Each of the guys went through different phases; sometimes they were likable, dependable, others they were dismissive or even suspicious acting. They were always yummy but it kept me on edge. Could El trust anyone? I liked the slow burn with this one. It fit with the book. Then that ending! WHAT? What happens next, how does Kyle fit on, where are the missing guys, how does any of this work now? I can't wait to continue the game.

I’m loving this Urban Fantasy RH Romance. All action and plot layers!

Despite it’s on-line gaming setting, for me, Fringe Realms: Mage sits squarely in the very slow burn Urban Fantasy genre, and will also be the third series that I have enjoyed reading from this author. Each one, I have auto-one-clicked based on her name alone.

Knowing that LJ Swallow herself, is a gamer, yet takes the time to explain the game terms, meant that as someone who hasn’t moved much past the initial days of ‘DOOM’, and who has a small appreciation of the world of MineCraft when the kids were into it, I could enjoy the story of Eleanor and her friends so much more.

Layers of plot were exposed as I read through the book, and Eleanor’s suspicions arose as she began to realise that this was no ordinary game, and that typical games rules did not apply. Yeah, I’m no gamer, but I loved the world that LJ Sparrow put me into with her characters. She kept me grasping at each small thread of a clue, and when they reached a mysterious character called Ethan, who had answers confirming the suspicions El had been gathering, I was on tenterhooks for her and the boys. When he told them his truth, I had a whole new understanding of the book, and a whole different interpretation of those on-line games I’ve seen the kids play!!! Mind-f^^k indeed, my head was reeling!

Remember, this is a slow burn RH series, so in between developing her character’s mage skills and trying not to get killed, our heroine is only just acknowledging that her heroes are all kinds of attractive!! I can’t wait for the next book in the Fringe Realms series. Eleanor and the boys have so much to learn, about the game and their places within it, and about each other. 4.5 Stars.

It is no secret that I’m a huge fan of L.J. Swallow’s writing and this one is no exception. I’ve previously read a gaming romance under her romance name (Lisa Swallow), so I figured this would be like that but with a reverse harem twist. How wrong I was! This is nothing like her previous work, not even a little bit. Its so much more. Much more interesting, extensive, demanding and that’s just how I felt as a reader. This book demands attention, and I had the hardest time putting it down. Even to sleep (R.I.P sleeping pattern).

I’ve games my fair share of hours, days, weeks, months and even years myself. World of Warcraft took a huge chunk of my years in the 20’s and sometimes I would play so much, that even my dreams took place in Azeroth, where even sleep didn’t stop me from carrying out imaginary quests as either my shaman or my hunter. Though, I am glad to note that my dreams were no way near as vivid, as Lisa’s imagination is in this book.

I actually find it hard to write a lot about the book, without giving too much away. But I found the characters (no pun intended) easy to connect with. Especially as they’re all so different. Throw in some life threatening goblin fights, and the majority of the group seems to quickly learn that they need to stick together. However, 1 character seems to be a riddle wrapped up in a mystery: their tank, a feisty and bossy girl named Zara. For some reason she’s not as keen on the group dynamic of the game, and at least once it seems like she slips up and reveals more than intended. However, the book ends on one enormous cliffhanger, and I for once find it almost impossible to predict what might happen next.

*I have received an ARC inexchange for an honest review

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was a super fun read. I really liked how the author incorporated so many gaming elements into the novel. It is truly one of a kind that I have never read. I also really liked the fantasy and science fiction elements combined together. The unique aspects of the novel made for some really good world building. In addition, the author threw a lot of twists and turns that made me keep on my toes. Also, the character development between the heroine and her harem was phenomenal. I loved, loved seeing the chemistry and the slow-burn love develop. Some of the first kissing scenes were so sweet and tender. The only reason why this book is 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt that there was somewhat of a middle book syndrome happening. There were some parts of the book that dragged and made it a wee bit too long. Otherwise, despite this slight criticism, I highly recommend you one click this book.

Fringe Realms: Mage is the first one in this new series and my first read from this author. First off, this isn't litRPG as was stated in the first page of the book. I’d say that I’m not a hard core gamer myself and understand a few terms, there are gaming elements and terms but not so much technical that even the non-gamers I’m sure can understand.

I’ve enjoyed reading this book because it brought me back my memories of gaming days; the thrill of doing tasks/ quests and the joy of leveling up and acquiring new skills, meeting online friends that you get to geek out together. I’m curious as to how the author will wrap this up and I’m looking forward to the next book to know more of this world. I highly recommend this one!

I received an ARC and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.

What would you do if you became trapped in a video game? If everything you knew about the world changed overnight? This is exactly what happens to Eleanor Walker and several others in this great new book by LJ Swallow. These characters went to bed in the world they knew and woke up in a game. I love this concept for a book. The quests and challenges that Eleanor, Dean, Jay, and Aidan have to complete are interesting, twisty, and show the intricacies of their personalities. This book is a slow burn book, but I enjoyed it as it gave me the opportunity to get to know the characters and the world that they have been thrust into. I am really looking forward to the next installment in this series.

This book was strange.

I was confused, entertained and bored at the same time. Around the middle of the book i was close to DNFing it cause it got so boring but pushed through which i'm glad i did cause jesus that ending. I need the second book like NOW which unfortunately for me there's no release date at this time.

I don't hate the characters but don't love them either. When it says slowburn, it means slowburn. No romance in sight which i dont mind cause it would've taken away from the story. There is some light flirting though.

So despite not really enjoying this book i am looking forward to the second.

Interesting end

This book was middle of the road for me. I am not a gamer and the gaming aspects were ok and fortunately for me not too over the top. I just don’t gaming... anyway.. the storyline was interesting but sometimes I felt it jumped around a bit. The slow burn romance was too slow for my liking as well. Gave the book 3 stars because the end of the book snagged my attention and I might actually consider reading the next one now whenever it comes out... the end of my book said later in 2018 but the book appears to have come out in 2019 sooo not sure when the next one is coming out :)

Refreshing

LJ Swallow has produced a slow burn RH fantasy novel set in the gaming world.

I have really enjoyed this first book in her new series. Fringe Realm: Mage left me asking is Eleanor a real person engaged in a virtual world or a character in a game.

I loved the detail in the story and the characters. I also like the slow build of the Eleanor’s relationship with the men she meets - Jay, Dean and Aiden.

If you like gaming give this book a read. It is a very enjoyable read.

What would you do if you woke up inside a video game? Well.... Eleanor Walker is about to find out❤ There is such a refreshing uniqueness to this story from the storyline itself, the wonderful characters that keep you on your toes & all the slow burn 🔥🔥
I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say this...Read this book! GAH! This was such a good read! & I cannot wait for the next installment of this new series by LJ Swallow!

This series is perfect

I don't think I have ever read something that gripped me so strongly that I never wanted to let go like this series. If you like playing online RPGs this series is right up your ally. I played religiously for years and I can honestly say this series speaks to every gamers heart. We all want to live in the game. This book takes you there. I am very impatiently waiting the next book.

Fantastic!

Great start to a new series. I am not a gamer and have no desire to be so I wasn't sure that I would like this book. Because this is one of my favorite authors I read it anyway and I'm glad I did. This book is rh/ action gaming/ paranormal all rolled into one. I love the characters. Not sure what is actually going on yet. It's as much as a trip to me as the gamers. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I loved this book. All the characters are likeable and you see real character growth in el throughout the book.
I literally did not put it down from start to finish (at about 3am) because I was so enthralled with the story. It's beautifully written and highly captivating.

Great first book!

El has a crappy mundane life so she loves to get lost in the game during her downtime. Something happens and she wakes up as a lowly level one character similar to her game. She makes friends, goes on quests, and levels up, slowly learning what happened to her. Will she ever escape? I can't wait to see what happens next after that cliffhanger.

This is a new series by the very talented Ms. Swallow. The story line is a bit different than I am used to reading, but I enjoyed it. I am not a gamer and I haven’t played any game since Tetris first came out, yet I still enjoyed the story and I was able to follow along due to Ms. Swallow’s descriptions of her world.
I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

Crazy headtrip!

Cool but crazy story about a girl somehow locked inside a game with her good friend. The game is alternate reality and Eleanor doesn’t really know what to do with the people she meets and where she is. She only wants to get out. Very slow burn but super intriguing premise!

Great book didn't like ending

Anyone who has ever played D&D will enjoy this book. A group of people suddenly find themselves not only playing the game but being a part of it. It has a to be continued sort of ending which I am not terribly fond of

Wow...this book is really different to the other books I have read from the super talented LJ Swallow...I absolutely love this concept and for me it is so different and unique! I have no idea about gaming and this story really shows how some people just exist day to day and then come alive in these other worlds..all the MCs are different and intriguing, i did not like them all but when do we always like everyone?? This book has done great character development and LJ Swallow left me wanting more at the end. A great start to an interesting and intriguing new series!
