The blurb is just so great for this book... I’m not going to rehash or elaborate....because #Spoilers!!!

Holy genetic mutations... Transformations... Space aliens!!

This book ticked all my sci fi romance book loving boxes. Short and sweet and oh so sci-fi fantastic!! What a cracking book! A teasing taste of a whole new world and new possibilities.

I really really really hope that there will be more? ( yes I’m Oliver.. cap in hand begging )
Please please please please!!

I really, REALLY enjoy everything Regine Abel has written and this book is no exception. Malaika is dealing with some heavy stuff and she's willing to embrace the potential of what's coming with grace and bravery. Considering she's literally changing daily and has to figure out how to live in her new skin while saying goodbye to her old life, this is phenomenal.

Now, having Zayek there to ease her transition and mentor her miiiiight have helped a little. Although Malaika can't feel the connection between them as deeply as Zayek can, she does feel something for him. And the deeper she gets into her transition, the deeper her feelings become. Which is pretty much exactly what I want whenever I pick up a book so YAY!

As I said, Regine Abel's books thrill me with every one I pick up and I'm always down to see what predicament she's going to put her characters into. For all it's short, this story packs a sweet punch that hit the spot.

🌸 ¡Hola lectores! (●’◡’●)ノ

Short

This is like a prequel to Mermaid, but barely if that makes sense. It seems like it's supposed to explain how humans discovered the virus that changed them into Thalans, Sikarians, and Eloham (Elohim, sp?). But it focuses, barely, on the transformation of 1, and only touches on their relationship half-heartedly. And the way the Sikarians handle the humans leaving due to their changes is heartbreaking. Trigger warnings for families separated and members believed to be dead. Also for transformation triggered womb evacuation of a pregnant human whose body, as it transforms, no longer sustains her human embryo. But yeah, husbands and wives are divided, children are left in other family members' care, fiancees are broken up, careers left behind. They arrive on a prison bus and leave in a ship with only what they had on them-if they managed to have cell phones with pics, for example. So, a lot of sadness, a half told and very rushed romance- as it's told with her being asleep during her transformations which take up most of it, and if you haven't read Mermaid then the transformations are definitely anemic in telling because this does NOT delve into the changes like that one did. Which seems like a disservice to Malaika. If her story is going to be told, she deserves as much of a stage as any other MC. This and Wonjin just didn't seem worth the writing, honestly. I'd hoped for some more background on initial discovery of the virus, nope. I'd hoped for some explanation of the "deaths", nope. Humans are curious and very much against being lied to. When swaths of humans start growing scales, and then dying, you'd think that some rogue scientists would be spreading the word because there's no way that Sikarians could muzzle them all. Or that govt agencies, realizing aliens are real and that these former humans are now stronger, faster, and able to fly/swim places stealthily, would be kidnapping them to use against foreign nations. (Humans haven't realized they aren't alone yet, and govts are greedy as a rule. And not one to squander resources. Well, they'd call them weapons.) So, it's ridiculously short, barely sweet- more bitter than sweet, and as unsatisfying as Wonjin's tale. But at least his world was established, mostly. Outside of the bird gift and some other things randomly thrown at Lara with no explanation.

What an adorably cute short story !

Wow !! There was an awful lot of feelings packed into this novella !!
Can you imagine turning into something else ??
Neither could Malikia, but here she is !
Malikia, along with a busload of other "sick" people are on their way to a CDC facility in order to assimilate how "sick "they are . Some of them will have an occurrence, and possibly cosmetic surgery, some will have stronger symptoms.. As with most government facilities, the first few rooms are welcoming. Even luxurious. But soon after arriving, Malikia goes into horrible spasms and cramps. And she knows beyond a shadow of a doubt , that she will be one of the Very "Sick " ones........
Zayek is a Trainer- of a sort , and he has been assigned to help Malikia though her transformation.......
He will help her adapt , and together they will see to the future !

New beginning!

After a virus speeds and several people get infected, Mikala is one of them. Getting transferred to a facility to learn about her infection.
As soon as they arrive they learn what really happened to them.
Regine's ability to get you to be in the moment and feel what Malaika is feeling and what she is going through. You feel her trepidation and fear as her body starts to change. I absolutely was sucked in to what was happening and loved every minute!!

Great read!

Not at all rushed to only be 67 pages. Very pure and sweet. I would love a follow-up to see what happens to the other characters.

This is a short novella but surprisingly has a lot of plot. There are only two main characters that connect right at the beginning.

Humans that carry specific DNA start changing into aliens due to microbes release from permafrost melting because of climate change. The CDC has gathered them together to facilitate said change/metamorphosis.

5 / 10 ⭐️
No sé, a mi faltaron muchas cosas. Pero se deja leer.

I just had enough. Could not finish this one. It was a bit too juvenile for me. Decent story but just did not quite make the cut for me.

4.00 Stars. (BW/Aquatic Alien). Kindle Unlimited Edition 65 page novella e-book. Fantasy. Fated mates. Forced proximity. Although a novella, the author did a great job world building, showing the development of a romantic caring relationship between the main characters and a storyline with good pacing and a none rushed happily ever after ending for the protagonist. In this story, the hole in the ozone has caused extensive global warming resulting in many viruses but the one in this story causes the human body to mutate into being resembling prehistoric being as in the age of dinosaurs. Once a human like the heroine, Malaika, start exhibiting changes and symptoms of mutating, the are taken off planet Earth to a facility to help them transition or be restored to their former selves. Malaika meets, the alien hero, Zayek, from the planet of Sikarian hired to help humans transition. The moment he sees Malaika disembark onto the transition facility, he knows she is his fated mate and in addition, Malaika has a physical reaction to him as well. Malaika and Zayek grow close and by the end of her transition they have committed to each other and are off to build a happy life on his planet.

Romance AND interesting SciFi in one book

Okay, I became a Regine Abel fan because of her ability to weave in First-Contact SciFi with very endearing romance. This book is like a prequel to some of her other works, and is set very near our current times. The evolving humans are facing unknown challenges, with even more mysterious mentors. I can now appreciate some of the “science” in her other writings because of this book. And the HEA at the end is definitely worth it.

Thoroughly enjoyable novella

For a short story, this book was a wonderful read. Ms. Abel does not disappoint. In such a short time she created not one but several different new species that the humans mutated into. This author is extremely talented and I will continue to look forward to more of her writing.

One main reason I don't like novellas is that they're too short. I know that's the point of them but this could have easily been at least 300 pages! To me, this novella was an original idea, well-written, and very imaginative. I love seeing dark complexions in sci-fi, fantasy, and romance mashups without any reference to race. slavery etc. Just a beautiful short story about leaving the only world you thought you knew for a different one altogether with your fated mate.

great short romance

I honestly think I love Abel’s romances that are the “I married a…” MORE then that popular series. This is the second I picked up outside of that series and I just find the worlds more interesting.

The idea of recessive genes in humans awakening to turn some of us into the aliens that were our forebears is a plot I haven’t seen much of and I really liked it.

I like

Loved the way the author explained the reason for the mutations and the connection to the alien mentors. It made the book seem absolutely possible. Which I find scary, but slightly comforting also.

Not long enough

This was not long enough. It was a great novella but I wanted more. I would love to have a longer book with more in depth information. It would be great to have more from Earth and more after the new planet.

Born Earthling, but Not.

Considering all of the books that have been written about aliens intermingling here on Earth and leaving their offspring behind, this was an intriguing look at the possibility. Good read.

Alien Awakening

Another cool and intriguing way to deal with climate change! I don't usually like such short stories but this one was very good. If course more about the different permutations would also make great reading.

Short and Sweet

Such a sweet and caring devoted novella. When it comes to sweet romance this is in the top five of all of Me. Abel's works. Than k you again for a fantastic love story. As others have mentioned would like to see more of this type of romance.
