Being former cops they could not stand by and watch their neighbors be attacked by roving gangs. They evolved over time into a formidable fighting force to protect themselves and their neighbors. This is their story of the perils of survival.Jake invited five fellow cops and their families to join him and his family to set up a safe and secure retirement community in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. All the families worked together to become self sufficient and off the grid as they believed at some point in the not to distant future something would happen to cause a major collapse and survival situation. It did.
There was a lot that interested me in this book before I picked it up since it is about collapse from civil reasons rather than an EMP/war etc. The first issue is that there are a lot of writing and editing errors and I mean a lot. The flow of the story was sometimes choppy and stilted with an apparent need to keep reminding me that the Compound "guys" had been law enforcement officers with leadership roles. A good editor could have helped with the errors and the overall writing flow. The start of the economic problems in California was a bit vague as to how the state with the biggest economy suddenly could not fund retirement. I also found it a bit odd that the law enforcement guys with former leadership roles did not do a better job with Compound security other than hoping to stay hidden and get their guns out if needed. If there had been an EMP, the cameras etc would not have worked. At least they realized their issues and tried to fix it. I do like that they had to be creative in solving problems and were basically decent people able to work together in their group and with other groups. This was a pretty good story idea, but needs to improve with the execution.
Couldn’t get into it, although the story had real potential. Lots of shooting, scary situations, hardship and trouble, all standard for one of these dystopian novels. But the author lets all of the tension leak out of the plot, and there’s no climax or much building toward one. The story is completely disrupted at points when the author recites some long list of details that turn out to be totally irrelevant. In one scene, he goes on for a whole page listing everybody by name who’s going somewhere, then everybody who’s not. And absolutely nothing happens to either group anyhow, so what was the point? Which brings up another issue, that the book is overpopulated. Too many characters hard to keep track and you probably won’t care enough to try anyway. The bad guys are not particularly threatening, are easily dealt with, and the guy shaping up to be the main antagonist doesn’t make it to the climactic scene. Which also never happens. We’re supposed to cheer when the bad guys get justice and mourn when the good guys suffer. I never wound up doing either.
While very prophetic on what's happening in the USA and direction we are headed. There are good principles on survival and use firearms in free society. The story tone boring and stilted not really week written. It all sounded frequently like a police report with a single tone. It really maybe wasn't a four but the politics were so right on I had to!
A group of Atlanta Georgia cops who are prepared. Set up in rural Tennessee and that's where this story takes place...not a believable scenario that a group of 50 year-olds could accomplish this, plus all the people in the story are. Caucasian and reactionary. Every thing is just to easy. Shame this book was more a right aging. Political statement than a story about a cataclysm and a apocolism.
This is an excellent book ! I have read many of these apocalyptic stories, this one is at the top.
One thing I really dislike is heavy politics, I'm usually not of the same political beliefs as what is presented by the author. I stop reading and send it back to Amazon. This book does it just right and keeps it easy to read. I'm sorry that it came to an end. I highly recommend this book !!! Wayne Bosak keep them coming !!!
Solid plot and plenty of surprises. The facts seem pretty well related. The storyline seemed pretty realistic with no outrageous plot devices. This book was a pleasure to read.
Directions, towns, communities, road numbers were spot on. Needed more "survival" content. Wording was slightly amateurish but definitely has potential. Needs closer attention to words and sentences that were often repeated from line to line.
This book needed a good editor.. Not only were there grammar and sentence errors, there was also way too much telling and not showing. Costa Rica was spelling over and over again as Costa Rico..just sad.
I give it a four for all the great information. It loses a star as the last one quarter of the book seemed the author was tired of writing. It was missing the personal perceptions of the characters that made the main body of the book dramatic.
This was a very good story and really gives you a lot to think about! The grammatical errors were really difficult to get past. It was difficult to read for all the mistakes. You need to edit before publishing.
A good read. An interesting story line. It was nice to read a story that only had 1 volume. Thank you for that. Yes, editing could have been done better. Keep writing.
I think this a a bit of a prophetic tale. If things don't change in government and the extremely rich don't have a change of heart(fat chance), this could well come to pass. Hold your friends close and your guns closer folks.
I really enjoyed this read. The author did a good job blending all aspects of characters and action. The author, like many others, needs to remember that when he is referring to people, it is improper to say "that". Instead , use "who."
I like the way people are portrayed as they work together and accept the leadership that rises to the top. Thought the last part of Federal government downsizing was a stretch.
I was only able to get through the first few chapters before giving up. The writing and grammatical errors were overwhelming. The author seemed to hop all over the place and the story was "told" rather than "shown".
Why are all this genre conservative manifesto. Tired of hearing how the little guy bringing this country down. Not the corporate a raping and draining this country. Same story just beating same dead horse
