Colt Boudreaux was raised in the Louisiana bayou and is gifted with a talent steeped in the rich and soulful New Orleans blues tradition. He makes a living as a session musician, playing guitar for anyone who needs him. When his manager sends him to New York, the Cajun is as beguiled as he is baffled by the energy of the city—and just as charmed by Kyle Alexander.
Kyle is a successful classically trained ballet dancer, choreographer, and native New Yorker whose unbridled talent defies convention, and whose rebel spirit favors ink, shuns the orchestra, and is every bit as unique as Kyle himself.
They find a connection right away that inspires rhythm and movement, mood and music, both in and out of the bedroom. It’s not long before they’re as obsessed with each other as they are with their art, and they decide to work together on an improvisational piece for Kyle’s upcoming solo exhibition.
But Kyle is focused, and Colt is free-spirited. Colt’s work ebbs and flows with inspiration, and Kyle’s is rehearsed. Kyle is social and sophisticated, and Colt… isn’t. When their talents weave together, it’s magical, but will their differences destroy it all?
JODI spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She, therefore, is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.
For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. Jodi lives near New York City with her beautiful wife, and together they are mothers of dragons (cleverly disguised as children) and slaves to an enormous polydactyl cat.
Our stage is set in New York with Kyle, 29, ballet dancer, talented and making his way vibrantly.
In addition, a younger musician, Colt, with marvelous guitar skills, who is an intense Cajun, a lover of life and happiness.
Timmy introduced them, the Cajun and the dashing ballet man. One fiery hand shake shook their cores. A genuine story of opposites that can have similarities in special ways.
Super sexy times that rock each other in overwhelming ways. It’s exciting, fast paced, charming.
Kyle is busy in ballet with an upcoming production which includes choreography. Colt is jamming with friends new and old, writing songs and loving life. They take care of each other, with massages of sore muscles, cooking, and getting sexy times and playing. Divine.
They blend with a magical feel, like they were meant to be. Colt’s offers come knocking. They have an uneasy time period, but their perfections are sorted and harmony emerges. My heart ached for Colt, I had tears for his past that he’s overcome in the world, the perseverance to become a fantastic person, and the hurt Kyle inadvertently gave.
A beautifully written tale of free drifting hearts that come to rest in each other’s. Simply wonderful.
Colt Boudreaux is a very talented versatile musician and Kyle Alexander is a ballet dancer and choreographer. That combination pulled me right in from the start.
It was such an enchanting, captivating, and charming read. The writing was magical, the way they give music life and passion... magnificently done.
Colt is only in town for a gig, and Kyle wants to get his hands on him. Kyle, progressive as he is, takes Colt with him, right into his bedroom. Cole is so intimate it’s almost uncomfortable for Kyle... But Cole is here just temporarily so they want to enjoy the other to the fullest... and that’s just what they do.
They are inseparable. Every available moment they are together... easygoing... perfect. Their combined creativity is almost spirituous. Their feelings grow undeniably. But hey... it’s all temporary.
Their bedroom interactions are intense and I devoured them all. It was beautifully intense and freely given to each other.
I’m a huge music lover and make music myself, so when I read the passages about creating music... OMG it was soooo emotional how all the music and dance put together in sentences, it was just intoxicating. It opens the mind and soul! My heart was so warm and I cried at the same time. Excellently done... just excellent!
“The music grew softer for a moment, curious; then it attached itself to his heels like a shadow, finding him unerringly.” This!!
Colt and Kyle... I adored both men, energetic as hell, feelings always on the surface... not afraid to show them.
“He played because his soul needed it”
Something was nagging...slipping in...and it was hurtful ... and then ‘bang’ the balloon collapsed. I didn’t like it at all... I cried my eyes out. They are different but also very alike. Both artistic souls, one limitless, the other structured. Both working their asses off but somehow, somewhere, it does all go downhill. My heart went out to both men.
Both Colt as Kyle's characters are beautifully developed... you really get to know the whole package, and that means honesty, flawed and all, it stayed consistent throughout the whole story!
It was an extraordinary story, written in an excellent and emotional way. There are so many beautifully high sensitive moments... it’s impossible to give the right impression. While reading their story, my heart wanted to explode more than once, this story gave me so many goosebumps.
The book blurb is quite accurate, so I won’t rehash the plot. This was a definite melding of slow moving Mississippi River delta meets the churning waters of the Hudson River. Back water blues mixes with contemporary ballet. Result? A languid read with the perfect amount of relationship angst to keep the plot and characters interesting.
There were a handful of things that detracted for me, so I’ll start with those. Pacing was a bit slow, something I remember from reading other BA Tortuga books. You just can’t rush one of her plots, you need to let it unwind at its own pace. I admit, I get antsy. I know there is going to be some kind of difficulty, and I have to let the book get there in it’s own time.
Colt’s Mississippi bayou twang was a bit thick. While I appreciated the dialect which helped make Colt Colt, I would think some of the ah, rougher edges, would have been smoothed out playing in places like Austin, Houston and Memphis. So love/hate the accent.
It was a good thing Ms. Payne elaborated on how Kyle was living in a multi-story brownstone in Manhattan with skylights, three bedrooms and an indoor Jacuzzi on a dancer’s salary, because I was going to protest loudly. Still, mentally, the background situation for Kyle’s living arrangements didn’t entirely work for me. Entirely my quirk.
What does work for me is I so greatly enjoy an on-page couple experiencing “real life” difficulties and reacting as “real life” people do. One unintentional misunderstanding fester’s and grows leaving both men wondering what happened. The reactions fit the emotions and mental struggles both men were experiencing and I greatly appreciate that. It so totally works for me.
I also loved the blues vs contemporary ballet aspect. The studio musician’s vs the rehearsed setting on a stage. This backdrop emphasized and complimented the characters and I thought was very well written.
Lastly, the supporting characters were about perfect and their personalities were as varied and fluid as the main characters and setting.
So taking everything above together, this was an enjoyable story about two guys from very different backgrounds, but finding some common ground in their creative backgrounds.

Colt loves to play music. He has his guitar and travels around where he is needed to play. As a studio musician he finds himself in NY working where he meets Kyle.
Kyle is a ballet dancer and uses the studio that Colt is in for additional music. He meets Colt and wants to get to know him.
I enjoyed the story that these authors wrote but found myself having a hard time with Cole's Cajun dialog. At times it had me re-reading parts to try to understand what he was saying.
When Kyle and Colt meet the sparks fly immediately. Kyle knows he wants Colt and doesn't hide it. Colt is up for some fun and it heats up right away between them.
Kyle knows that having Colt in his life is temporary since Colt is a musician that goes where the next job is. They are getting more attached to each other but wonder if they can make it work.
It is a story about opposites attract. There is low angst in the book that I felt moved the story along.
Overall I liked it but as I said found all the Cajun dialog hard to follow which did take away some of my enjoyment of the story. *ARC provided by Dreamspinner Press, in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Jodi from Alpha Book Club
I loved the sound of this book when I read the synopsis but I didn’t realize exactly how much I would absolutely love it. It gave me everything I wanted - it had my heart racing, had me on the edge of my seat, and I felt the heartache these two wonderful men felt.
Colt had this way of speaking that had me melting, the accent strong enough in the words that I could hear his smoky vocals well after I put the book down. I could picture everything so clearly, as if these two authors were right here beside me walking through New Orleans.
I have come across very few male ballet dancers and that is such a shame because I love everything about them, and since I can’t dance to save my life, I could kinda live through Kyle’s obvious love of it. Kyle is sweet, if a little brattish at times, though that is by no means a bad thing.
The side characters like Timmy, Ryder and Norv were really well rounded and I hope maybe in the future we can get Timmy’s story.
I have seen these two authors around and have been curious about both and I am glad that I got this chance to experience this beautiful story.

Colt m’a énormément touchée.
ENG- So well well well… well I had already read a novel co written by Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga but we were in a completely different context. However, the summary made me want and I did not hesitate long before reading it. And I do not regret because I loved this novel. I fell in love with Colt completely. I must admit that the fact that I go to New Orleans this spring made me particularly fond of Colt even though he’s a strong enough character and endearing without that. Colt touched me tremendously. I really liked this character and I particularly liked the ease of his relationship with Kyle, from month to month.
I realize for some time that too much sex in novels displeases me and I took to watch when the first sex scene arrives in the novel. Here, she arrives very early.
Almost at the beginning. however, I loved the simplicity of their relationship and the fact that they do not think about being together.
I loved their relationship to their passions. I liked that they are each passionate about their art and that they try to mix them. I liked their differences, their similarities, I loved every moment of this novel and once again I am unable to say who wrote what.
I love novels happening in the dance world, especially ballet and I found the character of Kyle interesting. It was a real pleasure to follow these two characters. I liked that it was a slice of life and that even if their relationship knows a small clash, it is not an insurmountable ordeal and they settle relatively quickly with great intelligence.
In summary a really nice novel, a great time to read from two talented authors who never disappoint me.
Be prepared to feel this one. Literally. Lyrical and moving, I fell in love with Kyle and Colt's story.
The writing in the beginning has a fast tempo and I was swept away with it. The introduction of Kyle changes the rhythm and the focus so I felt the music and the dancing and the relationship all building and twining together until there was a stutter. Colt is dead tired from all of the hours put in making music and Kyle's dance company did not perform well. And then there is a big ole huge twang like reverb ripping right through everything and the storyline takes a turn.
Colt has some serious insecurities and Kyle inadvertently strikes him smack dab in the chest with them. Kyle is so strong and independent, he doesn't see what he's done to Colt, but he knows their rhythm is off. Colt is not blameless, but he is definitely the guy I sided with. He is lost and pained and there is a little moment when he, Ryder and Norv are jamming and the music is so sad Ryder can't stand it and has to leave the room because he has no words for that kind of soul ache. Just wow.
While I'm not familiar enough with Cajun accents to know if the writing is authentic, it certainly had a sound all its own. And this is the first time I can say I actually felt like I read the blues. That's what I meant by feeling something here. If you listen for it, there is music in the writing followed by a charming HEA.
This is a great story with an intriguing storyline and amazing characters. It is well-written, emotional, sweet, has some angst and I fell in love with all of the characters. Colt and Kyle are complete opposites that have an instant connection. I love how their relationship develops and how accepting they are of each other and their differences. They have smoking hot chemistry and are able to be themselves with each other. When they let a misunderstanding push them apart they will have to decide what they really want. I love the secondary characters and the ending is great. It did take me a while to get used to the writing style and the slow pace of this story but I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more books by both of these authors.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
First, I have to say there was something just so sexy about a ballerina and a cajun musician. I admit, my thought went something like " Cajun & NYC ballerina, suuure." But it works! Oooh Eeeh, does it work; until it doesn't, and then it hurts. I try not to post spoilers, so I'm not going to provide sets. Just know the writing was well done and the characters alive! Why a 4.75 then, you ask? Because I felt things with Kyle's parents seemed to be heading somewhere, building so to speak, and then the entire situation just fell out.
I love this series by B.A Tortuga and Jodi Payne. They did a great job with this book also. I love how these two authors write such intense and emotional books. Colt and Kyle are opposite of each other as night and day but you can see the attraction for each other from the beginning. It's such a sweet romantic story and didn't want it to end. Looking forward to the next book from these two ladies.
An entertaining read. Not a lot of angst, lots of sex - a fun story about 2 unique guys who compliment each other in odd ways.
There are 2 books in this series but the only thing that ties then together is the roommate Timmy and New York City so really, they are more stand-alone (until a book about Timmy comes along?).
This is another great story by both B.A. Tortuga and Jodi Payne. I love how Colt and Kyle's relationship grows throughout the story. I just fell in love with these two. Such a sweet and emotional story that I just couldn't get enough of.
Colt loves to play music, it is part of his soul. Kyle is a ballet dancer and loves dancing more than anything. When the two meet it is a perfect harmony. But Kyle is from money and Colt knows what it has been like to be homeless. I really enjoyed this story, I liked all the characters. The storyline is good. I even loved the music and dancing. I especially loved Colt and his Cajun dialogue, it added a touch of fun to the story. I hope we get to see Timmy's story soon.
