13 Steps to Bloody Good Health

Rate this book

It is tragic that we get old too soon and wise up to life too late. There’s so much we could—and should—have done to get to this point in better shape. The question is: what should we do now?

But health remedies are dime-a-dozen, each one contradicting another. As an old Chinese proverb goes: ‘It is easy to get a thousand prescriptions but hard to get one single remedy.’ How does one negotiate that tricky terrain?

This book has all the answers. In the patented, no-nonsense style of the 13 Steps series, it brings together scientifically sound advice in a non-judgemental course-correction guide. 13 Steps to Bloody Good Health is an easy, doable path to good health—step by step.

Ashwin Sanghi—entrepreneur by day, novelist by night—has all the usual qualifications of an Indian businessman. Schooling at the Cathedral & John Connon School, a B.A. (Economics) from St. Xavier’s College, and an M.B.A. (Finance) from the Yale School of Management. Besides being a businessman, Ashwin manages a parallel career as writer of fiction. Ashwin’s first novel, ‘The Rozabal Line’ was originally self-published in 2007 under his anagram-pseudonym—Shawn Haigins. The book was subsequently published by Westland in 2008 and 2010 in India under his own name and went on to become a national bestseller. ‘Chanakya’s Chant’ is his second novel in the historical-fiction genre. The book has remained on AC Nielsen’s India Bookscan Top-10 for all of 2011. It won the ‘2010 Crossword-Vodafone Popular Choice Award’ in September 2011. UTV has purchased the movie rights to the book and a film based upon the story is expected soon. Dr. Shashi Tharoor released the novel in Mumbai calling it an “enthralling, delightfully-interesting and gripping read with historical research that is impressive.” The Hindustan Times has called it “a cracker of a page-turner.” Ashwin is currently working on his third novel, as yet untitled, that explores business strategies in ancient India. Ashwin is also working towards a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from Bangor University in Wales. Ashwin lives in Mumbai with his wife, Anushika, and his eight-year old son, Raghuvir.

From writing fast paced fiction to books on improving health and wealth in ones life is not an easy transition but Ashwin does it with consummate ease by managing to find capable partners to tell a different "story" and does it well.

Pros:
Covers the most important things to remember to be healthy. For a person who don’t know where to start with and focus to improve health, this gives an overall idea.

Cons:
Uses way too many quotes from random celebrities (to lighten the mood?) and famous people. Though I’m not a fan of quotes in informative non fiction books, I could have appreciated if these”quotes” came from people who are professionally knowledgeable in the concerned areas.

Good for a skimming, but didn’t think it’s worthy of spending too much time with this.

This book will give you an overall idea scientifically about the health aspects. Most importantly I liked his personalize tip because not everyone can follow the perfect health practice. So essentially you can pick the habits that suits you which is something great.

It’s often the simplest things we overlook in our pursuit of health or happiness...

I have realised this thru my own experience of making little changes in my life and seeing unexpected results... one example that continues to amaze is when I broke my habit (though with great difficulty) of having chai after lunch - I cannot believe that it changed so much!

The book is just a reminder of everything we already know... sleep well, drink lot of water, exercise regularly, eat healthy food, follow a balanced diet with both acidic and alkaline foods that maintains the pH value, track the intake of minerals, vitamins and nutrients to meet body’s needs and use natural foods (often found in the kitchen) instead of artificial supplements, maintain the gut health for improved digestion, pay attention to the signals that the body gives, remember that prevention is better than cure and act on early symptoms...

and support these healthy habits with a positive approach - love yourself and build healthy relationships, avoid extremes and do everything in moderation, breathe deeply to stay energised, relax to reduce stress and learn to be thankful for what you have, to be contented, to look at the positive and to live in the moment... simply be happy.

It’s an easy read... but with no new content... just a reminder... guess we need reminders off-and-on!

ref: [move, relax, sleep, breathe, love, alkalise, nourish, digest, moderate, rejoice, supplement, hydrate, prevent]

There’s not a lot that’s new in this book but it is well written and a good reminder of many health related ideas. It’s easy to read and the authors have carefully interjected humorous comments at regular intervals. I didn’t find much which my experience contradicted. But as the authors point out in the end these are “one size fits all” prescriptions and everyone should figure out what works for them. A good book and an easy read.

There is so much more than eating healthy and exercising and this book covers it all
The first 8 chapters are more practical the remaining are more philosophical .
The language is very simple and easy to understand
Some parts are a little repetitive

Simple yet articulated in comprehensive way to demystify the importance of health.

Albeit title suggests there are 13 chapters in book but actually there are 14. 14th is the nutshell of all 13 chapters.

Importance and usage in one’s practice may vary as issues of all vary in life.

Overall must read for awakening the existence of health in one’s life.

I have to say that I loved reading the book, however, the new things that I learned from the book are hardly 15%. However, I know that a lot of people can learn great number of things from this book. Just not me.

I am still grateful for the new knowledge that I gained and will implement in my lifestyle.

13 steps

Too much utopian. Repetitions also there. Dr.Mukesh Batra himself seems obese and his business seems tobe on the decline. Not clear as to who says and what?
