There have been numerous times throughout my years as a bookblogger that I have considered expanding my platform and beginning a Booktube. This book was requested during one of those moments in an attempt to learn helpful tips that might assist me in making that jump. Seeing as I read The Vlogger's Handbook by Shane Birley and illustrated by Audrey Malo, you can obviously tell that it didn't quite work for me. That said, this is more due to my camera shyness than anything else. In general, I actually found this book to be quite helpful.
Admittedly, I did know a fair bit of the information provided in this book before reading it. The truth is that The Vlogger's Handbook is a great read for newcomers, the sort of people who have done cursory research and are looking for just the right amount of information to get started. It's filled with helpful tips and tricks to make a vlogging channel work well. And it's all in an easy to understand format, making it so that young adults could navigate this easily on their own.
The colorfully illustrated format is nice, too. Instead of existing as some dull rendition of a textbook to provide the information, this book has some really beautiful artwork to go along with it. I, personally, loved this about The Vlogger's Handbook. While I won't go as far as to say it was necessary, I think it was a really nice touch.
All in all, The Vlogger's Handbook is a great starting place for anyone looking to get involved in visual media online. It's not just geared toward those interested in being part of the online book community, but can be useful for literally anyone interested in making videos and posting them online. The book offers advice and recommends tools that will help those who are genuinely planning to give this sort of thing a shot.
If you do, good luck!
I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
"The Vlogger's Handbook" provides basic advice on how to get started vlogging. It appears to be aimed at younger people (teenagers and up), and the author chose four young vloggers to offer tips and advice on each vlogging topic. The author covered how to decide on what type of vlog you want to do, how to come up with ideas to vlog about, online safety, what basic equipment is needed and what equipment you might like to get someday, the basics of filming, lighting, sound, and editing, and choosing what online platforms to use. If you've never really done video or audio editing or have never learned to storyboard or create a story sequence, then this book will get you started off quickly with good advice and basic information. However, this book didn't provide much detail (no step-by-step projects) or cover more advanced skills, so it might not be useful if you've already done some video work.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Great for those who are on the younger side and have an interest in vlogging and making videos. And it does have some great tips that can be taken by those who are older and are starting. Things from equipment, filming, and online safety are talked about. Does given some options to what ones can use and purchase - though it may make it seem that one needs to buy some of the stuff right away (like lighting, but does mention natural light so there is a bit of a balance cost wise).
So what is vlogging and why would you want to do it? Beats me, so I thought I'd find out as my children have been known to upload videos to YouTube of their pets or their video gaming, The book is aimed at kids rather than adults, but I'm sure I will get something out of it.
This book starts with an Introduction entitled "Let's Vlog" which explains why people vlog, the different types and trying it out yourself. There are then nine further chapters which cover: ~ Think, write, invent ~ To share or not to share? ~ The tools you'll need ~ Filming your vlog ~ Lighting your Vlog ~ How does it sound? ~ Cutting & editing ~ Going online ~ Conclusion
Throughout the book are Q&As with real vloggers, giving tips and their own personal stories as to how they got started. It also includes cute drawings throughout the book to illustrate some of the points.
Whilst it's good at explaining some things, it a little limited in other areas and doesn't seem to indicate that on certain social media sites you need to be 13 years old to join.
At the back of the book is a list of resources for blogging platforms, open source video and audio editing, Photo and image editing and where to find public domain images, sounds and videos that can be used.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
The Vlogger's Handbook is a detailed intro to the world of vlogging and maintaining a channel. It is meant for a younger, pre-teen audience approaching the minimum age where they can have a channel with parental permission (13 on YouTube). Enticingly illustrated, this book goes over every detail that an aspiring creator would need to take into consideration when creating a channel. Everything from idea generation, to equipment, lighting and editing, and a breakdown of various platforms is covered. Obviously when one hears the word "vlogging" their first thought is probably going to be YouTube or Vimeo, but The Vlogger's Handbook makes the effort to remind the reader that vlogs can also be hosted on less talked about spaces like personal Wordpress sites, and even IG-TV. Obviously not every platform will continue to be successful or relevant over time, but The Vlogger's Handbook does a thorough job of naming the ones that are relevant in 2019. What I particularly liked was the inclusion of resources for free video editing software and royalty-free music, which young teens will find invaluable as most will not have the funds to pay for tools like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier. Even having lurked around YouTube for years, I picked up a couple tips from this book, which I very much appreciate.
My rating of 4-Stars stems from the fact that a lot of the information in this book will probably be self-evident to anyone who spends enough time around YouTube to know that they want to try vlogging for themselves. I also found myself to be frustrated that young vloggers were apparently contributing to the book via Q&A, but other than their first names and the subject of their vlogs, I had no idea who they were. It wasn't until the end of the book that their channel names were listed so I could see if they were in fact real vloggers.
This book is full of useful information if you’re serious about stating a vlog. While I struggled a bit with a lot of the information in this book I can appreciate its necessity in today’s world.
I loved the illustrations and I’ve shown my daughter who is 13 and she liked this book.
What an awesome book on how to vlog that goes so in depth. It has so much information that is explained so well. I am planning on starting a YouTube channel and this book has it all to prepare for that. A really interesting book that just about something cool to learn.
In this book, it covers all bases for wanting to get started as a vlogger. From editing, lighting, filming, sharing, security and more this book covers all bases to do with getting started on YouTube. With real YouTube creators chipping in with advice and stories from their experiences, it shows how It can be a great platform used correctly and successfully.
It was a very thorough and safety conscious book to help anyone use to get started on YouTube and I highly recommend if you're thinking about it to check it out!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
This is a really fun, engaging and inspiring book which really breaks down the process of vlogging into a series of creative activities that encourage children and young people to really reflect upon what it is that want to explore, why, and how to do it. I would highly recommend it.
If you are a very young beginner vlogger and you need a round up of what you need to prepare in terms of both technical and content knowledge, this short and colourfully illutrated book is for you. Regardless what your domain is - or you want it to be - (product reviews, travel, hobby, book reviews to name only few options) you need to acquire some basic skills and understand some technical requirements, such as regarding lights and sound. Although it does not take the information on a next level - such as the tremendous work required by the editing of a video, it offers a general frame to have in mind before starting a career in this field or just sharing your passion through videos. In fact, besides some short useful links at the end of the book for additional information about editing programs and other technical tutorials, most of the information suits very well an extended article about why and how to get ito vlogging. If this is exactly what are you looking for, this book is for you.

With a fresh, stylish design and bite-sized text and project prompt, this is a no-nonsense approach to learning about vlogging. Includes sections on Setting up and uploading a vlog, Inspiration, How to storyboard a vlog, Lighting and props, Advanced video skills, Editing your vlog, Adding sounds and effects, Building an audience and making your vlog pay.
At first, I thought this was going to be very childish and not really relevant to me (Yes I am thinking of vlogging) but the chapter about safety really changed my mind.
It goes into real detail about how to avoid being doxxed and defrauded and has some great advice. Despite the childish drawings and set-type, it was really very informative without being too patronising and I am thinking about buying a copy for myself.
41/55 books read in 2020. Borrowed the Dutch version from the local library. 63/52 books read in 2019. Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a good informative book about all of the steps necessary to start a vlogging channel, except how to edit a video yourself. So if you are looking to learn how to edit you will need another book.
Having said that, this is a very thorough manual and, although the language feels more suited for a younger audience, I would say that this would be a great starting block for 12, maybe even 10-year-olds and up who are thinking about starting a video/Youtube career.
Basic information on vlogging. Includes information on on-line safety, editing and equipment. This would be a good introduction to the aspiring YouTuber.
This is the perfect gift for the young person who wants to get into the word of vlogging. It is a colourful and engaging book with lots of helpful advise or information.
My Thoughts Vlogging is something I keep thinking of doing, but somehow never have gotten around to yet; and then there are my teens – especially my dd – who is getting videos ready for becoming a vlogger herself.
So when I saw this book, I knew I had to read it, for the both of us. And I am glad I did. The book covers the basics of vlogging and it includes many important topics; safety issues (which is the most important, from the parent perspective); how to pick the theme(s) of your vlog; equipment needed; and some details on creating and editing videos for the vlog. It also includes tips and Q&A type of sessions with popular vloggers.
The colorful illustrations and easy-to-navigate format along with the broad range of information make this perfect for the targeted audience of beginning vloggers.
In Summary A great ‘introduction and inspiration’ resource for all those who are venturing into the world of vlogging, regardless of their age.
A really useful introduction to the world of vlogging. The handbook covers the basics that teens often forget to think about in their quest to start vlogging - online safety, how to choose your "theme"/"topics" for your vlog, basic equipment you need to get started - and then it moves on to "how to create a vlog" using ideas like storyboards, and detailing lighting, sound & video editing. It does also touch on things like more advanced equipment that you may want to invest in if this becomes a longer term hobby, but it doesn't get into advanced skills. There are some useful list of resources and details of where to find public domain images, sounds etc that could be used. There are Q&As with vloggers, giving hints & tips and sharing their own stories as to how they got started.
Overall, I was impressed by the range of information contained in this book and the way it is presented appeals directly to the age group it is targetted at. I will be purchasing a copy for my teen youth group as several are interested in Vlogging!
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book free from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
For my work at the library, I often try to connect with other players like the youth center, schools and kindergarten.
And right now, it is an important issue to try and and help the children to get a better understanding of our digital world and how to live in it. And what better way than to make your own Vlog and in that context, talk about the importance of net security and what to say and what better not to say.
This book is written in a good and comprehensive language and it gives many opportunities to work out some lectures on your own.
I am very thankful that I got the opportunity to read it.
I’ve been considering a return to social media content creation and this little book was a big help in exploring what I would like to do! Granted, I’m in my late 20’s and I know that this handbook is marketed towards teens. However, it’s good to take a foundational step back and learn what’s new out there, safety tips as well as other things that might be useful. Very good read!
A helpful book on vlogging, narrated in language that is crystal clear, and with diagrams that are helpful, nicely illustrated and complement the textual matter well. I would recommend this book to anybody thinking about starting a vlog.
