Interesting story.
Aimee is autistic and so when she looks at people, instead of their features, she imagines the face to be a cloud. She sees other things in it too, which tells her what sort of people the person behind the cloud, would be.
The story starts with Aimee living with her grandparents after the death of her parents. There the electrical grid is suddenly sabotaged and her grandfather Major Elliot gives refuge to people in need. Using her powers, Aimee is able to help her grandfather by telling him what sort of person everyone was.
The story made a very interesting reading and it deals with how people got by in disutopian times and how simple things make ordinary people so unique at difficult times.

What did I think? Um....I really am not quite sure what to think. I still have no idea what happened in this book. I think it may have had a good plot but the plot was never exactly explained. I learned some things about planning for being without electricity for an extended period of time, but I'm not sure why. Some of the characters were interesting, others were not fleshed out very well. Some relationships were strange to me. There were a LOT of questions not answered. Honestly, I really do not understand how this book won a writing award. The writer does seem to have some talent for constructing an interesting plot, but in my opinion did not execute well.

There were things I liked about this book and some that bothered me. I liked Aimee Louise as a character and her different way of relating to the world was interesting. The strength of the book was her relationship with Rosalie and with the Major. Aimee Louise also became a weakness of the book. She is only 17 and has special needs and abilities, but too much started to revolve around her perceptions. At one point Major goes to see the sheriff out of concern for what happened at the electronic store and every item of discussion was Aimee Louise "thinks", "believes", "would like for you to", and "asks." No one else has any ideas about this? I like that there are so many good people trying to cooperate; so many books in the genre have almost all bad guys. However, the good guys seem to win without a lot of trying. And the poor sheriff...he never seems to have an actual name other that "Sheriff"; not even his wife calls him by name. The idea that a drug gang run by some high profile people would take down the grid just to move drugs seems far-fetched. Amidst the absolute resulting chaos, who is going to be buying these drugs? They also seem to get what is coming to them with no real effort from the good guys. I liked a lot of what the people on the farm did to thrive, but there was a lot of slow-down between something actually happening. The dialogue also had some issues. It was on the simplistic side and some of the adults had long speaking times where they changed subjects several times...taking food to the abuse shelter, I want to start canning, can we eat?-all in one breath from Molly. There was a lot to like about this book but a lot that needs work.

Maybe it's the style of writing but it was not captivating. I found the writing flat, dry and choppy. I suspected I was in trouble from the first page with how the "law partner" character delivered the news of Major's son's death...and how the writer had Major take the news. I got as far as 8% of the book before I couldn't continue. The writing needs refining. Plot may be good...who knows...I never got that far because of the writing.

DNF-I do not recommend the audible version as it's narrated by an AI male voice. The opening scene is about the death of a grown child and the AI made it sound like it wasn't even an issue. Imagine Siri narrating....

CLouds are so expressive

This book is brilliant, it incorporates many differential problems and how people react to them. It also a extremely clever autistic girl who sees ever emotion as clouds rather than people's facial expressions. This helps to save the people around her time and again.

Aimee Louise goes to live in her grandfather's farm after the death of her parents and when things start to lose power they are joined by several others who help to keep the farm safe and secure.

They help to find out the reason behind the shortages and to aid the recovery of the area.

A must read for anyone who loves dystopian books.

I tried to get into this book because it was a gift, but it just feels so choppy and does not flow. The writing style is not for me. There’s no emotion, the plot is confusing and the characters are flat. The opening scene lacks emotion. The main character gets a call that his son and daughter in law have died and he just shrugs and goes to prepare a room for his granddaughter. And he hasn’t seen them in 10 years?
Also- the plot moves from one thing to another so quickly. Day to next day, to next week with no flow.

Hard to read

I found the language to be stilted, especially the conversations, and the plot disjointed. There is also a need for editing as there were several obvious grammatical errors, missing words and such. I skimmed to read the last hundred pages to the end because I was curious how the author would end it. I'm sorry to say the ending seemed quite l contrived and abrupt leaving parts of the story unanswered and confusing.

Aimee Louise see clouds in front of people's faces that warn her of their feelings and intent and uses this to help steer her grandfather and others clear of danger. Not your usual violent story, rather a fresh, uplifting one.

Great Read

I enjoyed every bit of this story. It’s the first book if this author’s I have read but not the last. I can’t wait for the next book! Loved Aimee Louise and Rosalie. Loved the family and how everyone was treated and given their own voices. Very enjoyable!

Thought this was worth checking out because of the Aimee Louise character. Neurodivergent heros appear more frequently these days, but it's still not that common to find well-drawn characters on the spectrum. Especially not positioned as heroes. So I'd hoped it might be a YA title worth sharing. Plus, I found it as a free download; always hard to resist a bargain. But, whoa, this book was awful. Totally pointless. And I kept reading longer than I should have. At a certain point morbid curiosity kicks in. The ebook equivalent of rubbernecking at the scene of an accident, I guess. Now I'll christen that new DNF shelf. I really have no idea who reads this kind of thing and the idea that it may have an audience is a little scary. Stepford readers. Only nice thing I can say is it didn't have egregious typos.
