Save for a spectacular bout of barfing in the beginning (after the reader has been teased with it for a few pages in utterly tasteless fashion), which serves as a plot point to create a connection between both leads, nothing original, let alone crisp or natural, ever occurs within these covers. The porn star hero combines being as uneducated as one would expect such a professional to be with having clueless arrogance, my favourite quote being a case-in-point of authorial naivety: "don’t get me wrong, the money was important. But I could’ve been a doctor or an investment banker, you know? If it was all about the money, I could jump into the Florida porn scene and make a lot of money really fast. But, I was in it for more than that. I liked to ride the line between erotica and porn, give my audience the release they’re looking for, while stimulating their sensual side. This was my niche, and my fanbase was loyal. I didn’t make as much money as some of the legends, but I managed it well". If you are hard-pressed to imagine how someone can manage to be that dense while coming off as an unpleasantly snarky character, look no further than Mrs Hudson's Max. That such an irritating low-life has been made sole narrator of the story bogles the mind; small wonder Doug, the flight attendant and his love interest, has no personality whatsoever apart from slipperiness. Not only that, the writing is both verbose, if nor purple-ish, with entirely too many unnecessary adjectives and periphrases that fall flat, and stilted to the point of awkwardness (boy do I hate it when an author forever inserts conjonctions when none are needed: "I found my manager and let him know that I was leaving" ~"I had to admit that I was falling hard" ~"by this point, I was praying that he was gay", etc). As if all this was not enough in the way of stylistic malpractice, Mrs Hudson betrays a juvenile lack of basic vocabulary by dint of constantly repeating the same inflections at very close intervals, unless it actually evinces a literary preference of her own, something which I doubt since it tallies well with her fondness for horrid paraphrases and frigid or even jarring metaphors ("his voice was refreshing, like an effervescent bath for my nervous system ~"add to that the fact that he was a walking bullshit detector"~ "I felt my stomach officially reverse gears and everything that had been congealing there came flying out of my mouth in what would have been a pretty impressive show of gastronomical pyrotechnics if it didn’t end up coating the front of the man’s uniform", and so on). The constant emphasis on the same verbs and turns of sentences and inflections makes the reading really tedious, including such gems of a sentence as "as much as I was looking forward to seeing him, I was not looking forward to the possibility of this being the last time I saw him socially" and "I remember thinking that it was such a pity that I would have to hope to see him again on another flight so that I could get to know a little bit more about him", the former merely irritating whereas the latter verges on unintelligibility (four 'that' in 35 words!). Really no, there was precious little entertainment to be had between those covers. Next!
Who would ever have thought that a male porn star would be interested in an Airline Stewardess who was a virgin?
Well, Max Glover, know to the porn world as Max Lover was taken by surprise when he met Doug James. Not only did Doug try to help Max when he looked pale and sick on the airplane, but ran into each other after landing. Max still looked awful and Doug once again offered to help Max when Max vomited on the front of Doug’s uniform. Wow! What a way to meet your boyfriend-to-be!
Max didn’t do relationships in his kind of work until he got to know the sweet disposition of Doug and it seemed all bets were off. Doug reeled dizzily for awhile not believing he caught the eye of a gorgeous, kind man like Max.
Both in the beginning had their own secrets, but Max was brave and brought up the subject about him being a porn super star first, even though he was nervous and just “vomited” it out with no thought to the matter. Doug was not so forth coming with his well kept secret until the two became serious with one another and their relationship moved on to being sexual. Over time Doug finally confessed he was a virgin.
The beauty with their relationship was that they talked about anything and everything but especial if it something that might tear them apart. It was nipped in the bud when nasty, hurtful people wanted to put a wedge between them. I was proud of Max standing up for himself in public even if it meant he could possibly lose Doug. And Doug, well he was a sweetheart that didn’t over react to anything about Max’s career choice.
I loved all these haunting situations that came up and Doug and Max handled them together and worked them out. Doug is an astounding character and so much patience, I loved him. Later at his parent’s house when they met Max, Max’s thoughts were confirmed as to why Doug wasn’t ever ready for Max to penetrate him during their love making.
What a beautifully written story with lots of heart and joy. I would highly recommend reading it. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced read copy of this book.
‘It’s porn. Generally, I enjoyed my job. I wasn’t in it for the money alone.’
Max Hudson is rapidly rising as one of the more important authors of the genre of MM romances. Yes, there are many authors – men and women – who understand the subject matter and treat it well and erotically, but what Max adds to his stories is a fine sense of appreciation for history, fantasy, the effects of previous wars, and now with this book – the conflict and rules and regulations of relationships when clouded by the inner terror some men face when coming to grips with their sexuality. His chief attribute – the one that sets him apart from other MM authors – is his careful character building before the romance sets in.
The synopsis is particularly well written – ‘Max Glover is a well-established porn star with a cult following and a list of sexual conquests that is legendary. Intelligent, absorbing, well-scribed, LOOKING FOR FOREVER offers not only a fine evening’s read, but also a level of understanding about the conflicts people face dealing with their relationships and the complications accidents impose – the challenges that alter our lives. Max writes beautifully, inserts erotica in ample amounts, and brings his story to an end that is satisfying.
I thought this was one of Max's most fascinating books. How does someone who is a porn star find love? Max Glover is a porn star who likes to think that his work is more erotica than porn. Max has never had a serious relationship. He meets Doug, a flight attendant, who takes care of Max when he falls ill on the same plane. The relationship develops and Max begins to feel something for James. Feelings develop, but can James reconcile the fact that Max has sex for money? Max is a marvelously written character...he is an actor and works hard to make his craft something he can be proud of. Max has to decide whether he wants to make the effort to keep James and work through his issues. I liked Doug because he was pleasant and unassuming and approached the world with a great deal of joy. This book was an easy read. Max's themes of love and redemption flow through this work.
Max is a man who has made his decisions and lives by them. He is a porn star and he lets no one get him down about it, but he can't help putting himself down. Feeling dirty, he hasn't had a relationship in a very long time. Meeting Doug, who is a Stewart on an airline he travels on frequently, he soon looses his heart to him. The story has a lot of angst, sadness, regret, and secrets. There is a a possible trigger further near the end of the book, but has a sweet HEA. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
I liked that it was a short and quick read. There were not loose ends and it was mellow for me. ( Please be advised that the contains or topic are nowhere near mellow.) Like Pinocchio; almost really but not quite there yet.
This was a hard book to finish as I just didn’t connect with the MCs and there is not really a story line. Two men meet, a few little things happen, and then they are madly in love. This one just wasn’t for me.
New author for me. Low in angst. Due to the storyline it was low on smexy times. I do hope future books will be more sensual, arousing with heartfelt feelings. A thoroughly well written story.
Looking for Love was a fun, hilarious and all around great read. The first chapter had me rolling with the airport scene, and kept going form there. The storyline is about Doug the shy flight attendant and Max the porn star and how they meet. The two hit it off as friends and soon become more. While the storyline is fun there is a serious side as the character Max deals with peoples perceptions of him and his career choice.
