Jesper Ejsing is a freelance Danish artist, famous for the illustrations he's been painting of fantasy worlds for the past 15 years.
During his years working as an illustrator, Jesper has worked for many famous companies. Most of his fans know his work for Wizards of the Coast through his Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons artwork, but he also worked for Blizzard Entertainment, League of Legends, Paizo, Fantasy Flight Games, IO Interactive, Valve, etc… producing an incredible amount of wonderful illustrations.
And 2019 is finally the year where all of them get to be reunited in a book. 408 pages of gorgeous illustrations by Jesper Ejsing, as well as some explanations by the author in both French and English.

Today I bring you a little bit of an unconventional review. Although I've enjoyed many fantasy (and non-fantasy) art books, this is my very first review of one! Because this is an art book I'm going to talk a bit about the quality of the book itself. This is a tome of an art book, coming in at 408 pages it's one of the largest and most comprehensive art books I've come across for a single artist's work. The book itself is higher quality than most of the fantasy art books in my collection. The paper is thick and most of the prints are large, taking up a full page.
Now onto the artwork itself. I'll admit I wasn't that familiar with the artist before I read the book, but he's a very well known artist within the fantasy community having completed many pieces for Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons and Dragons books, as well as Magic the Gathering. He's also done work for Blizzard and Fantasy Flight Games. My husband is a HUGE Dungeons and Dragons fan and when I showed him the book he was very excited and said, and I quote, 'There are so many iconic pieces of art I recognize!'
In the beginning of the book we learn a little bit about the artist and how he got his start with fantasy art. We also learn about his style and some of the decisions he makes while working on a piece. I always find these kinds of things interesting so I was very happy to read about them. Looking through this book, I've really come to enjoy Jesper Ejsing's style. I love his use of color. As opposed to some artists who use contrasting colors a lot to make their work stand out, Ejsing uses a lot of complimentary colors and a more monochromatic palette often in his work which makes for a bold statement in its own way.
If you're a fan of fantasy artwork, art books, Dungeons and Dragons, you're probably going to want to see about adding this one to your collection--it's a very impressive art book.

Bienvenue dans l’univers enchanteur de Jesper Ejsing. Il est probable que son nom ne vous soit pas encore connu en revanche ses dessins de dragons, sorcières et autres gobelins, vous les avez certainement vu notamment sur les cartes du célèbre jeu Donjons& Dragons ou encore Magic : l’assemblée. Cet illustrateur hors pair a consacré tout son talent à la Fantasy, les amateurs lui en sont infiniment reconnaissants car il a su mettre des images sur des personnages tirés tout droit d’une imagination fertile. On trouve dans Blizzard Entertainement la preuve en image de la richesse de cet artiste. Les Editions Caurette nous proposent ici un livre précieux, qui regroupe l’intégralité de son œuvre, de quoi ravir les connaisseurs autant que les néophytes.
Une naissance très attendue et c’est un joli bébé de trois kilos et de 406 pages qui fait son apparition en ce début d’année 2019. Le début du livre nous propose quelques pages du travail étape par étape d’une esquisse jusqu’à sa mise en peinture. On trouve une superbe photographie en noir et blanc de l’artiste dans son atelier et enfin les choses sérieuses commencent avec un premier chapitre dur le thème des dragons. J’ai beaucoup aimé le choix des illustrations des différents chapitres qui sont réalisés au crayon noir en toute simplicité et qui pourtant révèlent déjà toute la force, le mouvement et l’originalité liés au thème. Le petit plus est de retrouver en tournant la page le dessin dans sa forme finale et aboutie, c’était un véritable plaisir de lire le texte explicatif. Dragons, adventure, battles, heroes and villains, inhuman et goblins sont les principaux chapitres. J’ai bien entendu apprécié tout ce qui nous était proposé mais j’ai quelques préférences pour deux d’entre eux, les Dragons et lnhuman qui regroupent tant de créatures toutes plus étranges les unes que les autres, donnent une bonne perspective de ce monde de la fantasy. Il y a de nombreuses doubles pages qui donnent un superbe rendu. Les couleurs et la qualité papier sont au rendez-vous pour faire de cette édition une référence. Ne soyez pas effrayé par le nombre conséquent de pages, en réalité il y a très peu d’écrits et on trouve les textes en anglais et en français. La part la plus importante est laissée à l’illustration avec en bas de page, le nom (en anglais) du personnage lorsqu’il s’agit d’une illustration pour une carte de jeu. On se rend compte en arrivant en fin de livre de l’immensité de l’imagination et du talent de l’auteur, une vie professionnelle consacrée entièrement à cette passion nous est ainsi livrée nous en sommes les dépositaires et je comprends pourquoi j’ai le sentiment d’avoir un trésor caché dans ma bibliothèque certainement parce que ce volume a quelque chose d’unique et de flamboyant. N’hésitez pas à faire un tour sur la page associée des Editions Caurette car de belles surprises sont au rendez-vous. Bonne lecture.

« Elsewhere » est un Artbook de qualité, autant dans le fond que dans la forme, qui vous entraînera dans un monde de fantasy peuplé de monstres et d’humains en tout genre. Un ouvrage à ne pas rater pour les amateurs du genre, on en prend plein les yeux !
