Project management expert Hassan Osman, in his book, Project Kick Off: How to Run a Successful Project Kick Off Meeting, offers a three-step method to ensure success of your project initiation. A very short book that covers the actions necessary before, during, and after a project kick off meeting, this book also provides free templates that can be used to keep track of the actions that are essential to keep a project on track and get buy-in from all stakeholders, from members of your internal project team to the customers to whom the project is being pitched.
The author takes advantages of his many years of experience in managing projects, his failures as well as his successes, to take the mystery and confusion out of running a complex, multi-dimensional project.
Written in plain language that is easy to understand, it outlines relatively simple steps that can be mastered by neophyte project managers and serves as a handy guide for more experienced individuals.
Disclosure: I was offered a free copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
The author promised a quick read and it was (only about 15-20 minutes) and that in itself was appealing as I really like bit sized micro-learning that gets to the point and cuts out the fluff.
This book is exactly what it says on the cover: a how-to for project kick-off. Just because its short does not mean it's not comprehensive as it is. Additionally, Hassan gives links to a kick-off PPT template which is also a very useful resource.
So however experienced you are in Project Management, read this book as its a great reminder and even a good tool to use to train others internally.
Excellent resource if you are nervous about the big kickoff
This 5-star rating is based on the book being a handbook to perform a specific task. Obviously it is not a full-spectrum PMO book. It does do a very nice job expanding on the typical 8-bullet agenda suggestions into a well-explained manual. It includes suggested scripts for several key points, which is very useful; in a meeting that sets the tone for the project, this isn't the time to start winging it. A nice job that youmwould do well to refer to as needed.
