It had potential. The storyline was basic but good. Characters were a bit mundane by being predictable and using weak dialog. The 8 year old started using complicated words and phrases toward the end of the book.

I got this as a free add-on for Perrin's short story "Beneath." Beware slight spoilers.

It's okay. It's standard fair zombie, but shares some similar threads with David Moody's zombies to a degree in that they aren't entirely mindless. At least in the beginning as they are becoming zombies. I quite liked that, especially with the interaction with the car dealer. Except for some questionable dialogue, I quite liked that scene.

The story is a good pace, but the characters are ... I don't even really know where to begin. I get that the main character is supposed to be a POS and that point is smashed into your face with a ten-pound hammer. But the disconnect between him looking for his youngest daughter once he realized what happened to the eldest and his wife and then when they did come across each other is jarring to say the least. "Where is my daughter? I need to know if she's safe or also a monster." to "Oh, there she is. Go away while I go wander into the woods alone. You're eight, practically an adult. Here, get pelted by rocks."
I get it. He's an alcoholic. He's an absent father. He's supposed to be irredeemable with a redemption arc, but it never feels redeeming. I was willing to give him a chance when he started warming up to, as a reminder, his own daughter, but he lost all of it when he slept with a minor. Even putting aside my American sensibilities that the age of consent is 18 and not 16, she was still a minor. It's even more disturbing considering the fact that the girl he slept with was closer to his daughter's age, at 8, than his own arbitrary adult age.
Removing that bit of abject disgust, the rest of the story is fine. There was a twist I called at the zero-hour that was foreshadowed pretty well and I'm surprised it took me so long to figure it out. I can see the inkling of the main character becoming a better person, again despite the ... you know. That doesn't save him though. That sour taste remains.
As for his daughter, Maisie, she doesn't sound like an eight-year-old in the slightest. Even being raised in a troubled home that would probably ramp up her psyche to think more rationally and adult-like, she kind of flip-flops between wanting to be the child that she is and being more reserved and logical. Her dialogue in particular is just too direct and adult. You're constantly left having to remind yourself that, "Oh yeah. She's a kid."

To summarize, it's okay. There are some good bits. Perrin does a nice job with flowerly descriptions of scenery and viscera. The characters are kind of one-note and aren't particularly convincing. I would have preferred "Beneath" to be expanded on because that short story hooked me early on and the setting was unique and horrifying.
