Once a man could swing a wide loop and build up a herd from the mavcricks that roamed the Texas brush. A lot of men became cattle kings in a hurry. But Reb Kittredge came along too late. He was supposed to be satisfied with forty a month and found. Then Reb decided he'd play for bigger stakes. He'd sell his gun-skill to the highest bidder. That was what brought him to Sleeping Cat Basin, whore Gault Telford offered the biggest stake of all. This quick-trigger job represented just one stepping stone in the crossing of a wide creek for Reb Kittredge — until a desperate woman bargained for his six-gun with her beauty.
The western novels of Norman A. Fox have sold several million copies throughout the world. His works have appeared on motion picture and television screens and have been dramatized for radio. This popularity is founded on Fox's ability to tell a gripping tale, backed by the vitality that comes from his knowing the West through both travel and research. Born in Michigan, Fox has, since early childhood, claimed Montana as his home.
A killer is sent for but when he meets his boss, he's not so sure he wants to work for him. Then the man he was supposed to go after offered him a ranch through a cut of the cards, the gunman won. Now battling his prospective boss he has to use his wits and learn a lesson from the rancher he was hired to take out.
Highly recommended, less of a shoot'em up tale but still had moments of action to go along with very good character development and story.

A good old (1950) western that is a quick read, but an exciting tale. Gunhand goes against the man who wants to hire him and gets a stake in a cattle ranch. Of course, there's a beautiful rancher's daughter. I think these older westerns from the 40's, 50's, and 60's are much better than most newer ones. The newer westerns are more violent and some are nothing other than disguised pornography. Keep reading the classics.
A classic western story of a hired gun who turns in to a good guy and earns the love of a wonderful woman. The terminology at times was interesting and probably only understood by actual old cowboys and the author. The story was well paced and interesting.
