Preface: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There's not a whole lot to say about this novel. It's fairly bland from the get-go. It has all the trapping of stereotypical fantasy. Dead parents? Check. Cute, defenseless hometown? Check. Elderly mentor? Check. Hunky best friend from childhood? Check. A protagonist that feels completely average and powerless despite occasionally manifesting, well, powers? Check.

The only thing that makes this book different from the typical fare is that all of these stereotypes would generally be used to kick off the plot. That still happens here...but it takes about 140 pages.

Yes. Half of the book is essentially filler, complete with awkward time jump during which nothing of consequence happens. By the time the thing we all knew was going to happen with the town and the mentor and all that actually happens, we're halfway through the novel. Only then do we get our call to action and the hero actually stepping forward - and even then, they accomplish essentially nothing, only taking down a low-tier baddie and setting up the plot for the rest of the inevitable trilogy.

Trilogy-itis is a common problem in fantasy novels, and this one has it bad. Instead of telling a unique, compelling story, it just lays the groundwork for one.

Whether the rest of the trilogy ends up being good remains to be seen - but given what we're shown, I'm not terribly hopeful, unless cookie-cutter fantasy is your thing (no judgment here). If so, read away.

I had a chance to get this book but wasn’t quite sure on it so I cheated and went and read some reviews before I said yes or no on it. Everyone seemed to love it and it was the kind of description that I enjoy reading so thought why not try it. I really enjoyed it and I hope the author comes out with the next book in the series soon. It starts with the main character being a child and sets up some of her back story so that you can see that her knowledge is limited. I liked how it was set in the future with a lot of things that had happened to make the world like it was for the time of the book. I also like how the author incorporated magic into the story. The female character seemed more true to life than out there so that she was easy to relate too. I could see why the male character did what he did and why it caused the problems it did. It was a good flowing story and seemed to just start it and was done. I did receive an ARC from Hidden Gems for an honest review. I will be looking for more from this author and will be keeping an eye out for the next book.
