Bramble and Blood

Rate this book
Welcome to St. Louis, home to mythological creatures, magic beings, and necromancer Eve Williams -expert on death and disappointment.

Especially disappointment since being fired from a prestigious job a with the Druid Brotherhood - the elite law enforcement of the magical community and the only family she’s ever known.

Now Eve’s left the magic community behind - except for her pain in the ass best friend who happens to be a witch - and she spends her time working for humans answering questions the faithfully departed left unanswered and avoiding the druids at all costs.

When a client asks for help to find a missing sister, Eve doesn’t see the harm in taking the unusual case - until her investigation uncovers the ritualistic murders of her fellow necromancers tied to the missing woman. Eve is reluctant to ask the druids for help but when an attempt is made on her own life, it forces her to work with the Druid’s Enforcer - a man who most in the magical community see as an assassin.

As onetime antagonists become hesitant allies while trying to find the killer, Eve finds herself knee-deep in sword-wielding druids, death magic, and psychotic witches.

I'm an urban fantasy author. I write stories about sarcastic necromancers, sword-wielding druids and fat-ass cats. My books are packed with intriguing characters, deadly magic, and mystery.

I live in the Midwest with my husband, our two children, a dog, and our own fat-ass cat. I've been in love with mythology, folklore, and the paranormal for as long as I can remember and I want to share that love with my readers.

Oh yeah. That's the stuff.

Eve Williams is a Necromancer in an alt universe St. Louis. Magic is real as are shapeshifters, witches, trolls, goblins, and whatever the heck James is -- basically all sorts of supernatural creatures.

Magic and users are regulated by a somewhat bureacratic Druidic entity known as the Sanctuary, led by a powerful being known as the Archdruid.

At the start of the book we know that Eve used to be part of the Sanctuary and has status and was an up and comer amongst the power circles. It is clear that she has a lot of power and talent. But something happened, she is persona non-grata at the Sanctuary and now works at an agency doing low level necromantic work. Her powers and ability to move about freely sharply curtailed by the Sanctuary.

But she is called to a missing persons case for a powerful family and this snowballs to something bigger until the she is forced back into the inner circle of the Sanctuary and the fraught interpersonal and professional tensions this brings.

I liked this almost immediately. It has the feel of a crime noir crossed with a urban fantasy. Evey felt like a typical down on her luck gumshoe in some cases and a scrappy UF heroine in others. There was a nice vibe and atmosphere to the story and the world building was really good. I especially liked the author's take on the necromancer rituals. What the cost of being a necromancer was and basically all of it! It didn't feel cookie cutter.

Outside of the world building the relationships between the characters was well done and kept you invested. I was curious about what happened with Eve & the Sanctuary? Why was she so hurt about Harlen? Could it have been that bad since Ben and Will still viewed her with affection? Why did Samuel hate her so?

And most especially, what was up with James? Now he was an interesting construct. An Enforcer for the Sanctuary also known as The Everliving. He was enigmatic, dark, sometimes harsh and just really .... so very interesting. Also Eve just really plucked at his nerves. Lots of UST there but not overdone and still really just ... hovering.

The mystery was satisfying twisty and this is where the crime noir aspects come from. Take away the supernatural element and that hovering sexual tension, this read like a detective novel.

I liked the ending, I liked where it seems things are heading for Eve and I am even more intrigued by a late story revelation about James.

Good book.

Decent Opening

******Spoilers*****

Eve the necromancer has some interesting adventures. The story was slow and mending meandering but I was engaged enough to be intrigued and not annoyed. Though one theme in particular that I really didn't like were the teases about her past, including what went on with her and Harlan and why it's so hard for them to be around one another. We learn the truth late in the book and it's nothing eye popping or egregious in my mind to explain the delay in the telling. By the end of the book though, whatever hard feelings and hurts between them over the last four years is gone for the most part.

Eve starts out the book being hired for an investigation and she grumbles about the restrictions placed on her and being accountable for certain of her actions and having to get permission from the Enforcer to do certain things which she didn't like. Still not sure what the deal is with her and the bad blood with the Sanctuary and Archdruid Eli. The book could use a lot more explanations about druids, necromancers, the Sanctuary, and the Agency. Most of the information is murky and not as clear or defined as I would like.

While Eve is on her investigation, she's called away here and there to do necromancy work. Her witch friend is interesting and so was Daniel I thought even though he had an ulterior motive for seeing her, I thought she was too harsh when it came to him. Especially not considering whatever hold his mother has over his actions or what it might mean. In any case, Eve spends more time with the Enforcer James than I would have expected given her animosity towards him. He saved her a couple of times and Eve gets banged up a lot more than I would have thought she'd be. We'll see what's next in this series.

I'd rank this one more a 3.5 but there were too many holes and lack of information to bump it up in my opinion.

Well. I really liked it. But I wanted to like it more.

The world building was amazing - the way Ashley Beasley introduced the concepts of her creation was really cool. Loved Ben and Will. Want to know Harlen, Cinder, & Josiah more. More cat.
The descriptions built vivid pictures - the whole thing was a concept that I would usually want more of.

And there's the problem for me. The reasons this got 4/5 stars from me (and please realize this is totally subjective. This is all me. May not be the case for you at all - but it was a problem for me) were Eve & James.

Please let me clarify: I liked Eve. I liked her very much. But I wanted to LOVE her, and I just couldn't.

Eve & James take "prickly" to a whole new level. I think if the book had been written in first person (again, just my personal preference) and therefore really let me in Eve's head - I could have loved her.
Being on the outside looking in left me feeling like I was always missing that something extra that could have really made her sparkle. And if she had sparkled, then I could have liked James better.

Overall, feeling like I was missing something integral from Eve gave the whole book a very dark overtone for me. It took me 10 days to read it because of that darkness - I found myself reluctant to pick it up. True, the subject matter is dark and deep. But so are Jane Yellowrock, Kate Daniels, and Grier Woolworth. The difference is that I KNOW those characters because I live inside their heads and all the extras that make them who they are make the dark subject matter worth venturing through.

That being said, will I read the next one? ...I really don't know.

I hate to criticize - like I always say, I've never written a book and this is Ashley Beasley's baby. These are just my opinions, make of them what you will.

Checked this out on Kindle Unlimited in part because it features a Black main character (based on the cover art). I strongly believe we need more diversity and representation in all our writing - the characters, the authors, the publishers, etc. It was nice to see a person of color on a KU book (maybe there are lots, but not in the genres I've been reading...or maybe there simply aren't many).

The character is consistently described as having darker skin and curly hair as well as a brown eye (her other eye is crimson because paranormal fantasy). Aside from that, race never comes into this story at all. Which is fine. In some ways, it would be great if skin color truly didn't matter and no one had to think about it except when describing themselves or someone else. But usually, it does matter and does come up, even in fiction; even in fantasy or science fiction written by people of color...because unfortunately, it is still a huge issue in our society, and science fiction and fantasy are at best ways to explore issues we are dealing with in our society. So I'm honestly not sure about the intentions of the author in terms of race.

I did thoroughly enjoy this story. The magic is fascinating and the relationships between Eve and James in particular, but also Daniel, Will and Ben, Wist, hooked me and kept me going. I had the thought early on that I might reread this series some day and everything I was trying desperately to understand would be so clear to me the second time through...and it's a positive that I was already thinking about rereading it.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't looking for an urban fantasy novel, but stumbled across this one, and decided to pick it up. I've been feeling a bit slumpy lately, so I figured something quick and easy would do the trick.

It was definitely a quick read, but not entirely easy. The book had a nice level of complexity, especially in the world building. The magic system was interesting, especially the main character's necromantic skills. I also think the ghosts were well done. The Fae were very different from the usual, and that made a nice change of pace.

I liked Eve, especially her combination of strength and vulnerability. She stood up for herself, and gave as good as she got, but she didn't pretend to be the biggest badass in town. She knew that other supernaturals might be physically stronger, but when it came to necromancy, she's one of the best.

There's no romance in the book, and that was also a nice change of pace. There are possibilities for the future, and I like the slow burn.

I like how the investigation into a missing woman was handled - Eve did the legwork of solving the mystery herself. I enjoyed how the story unfolded.

The characters were all interesting, but I wish Eve had had some friends, not simply people she ran into from her past. A person she could confide in, or be a foil for her, would have been great. It would have given her a more rounded character.

Great read

This was written very well.
I had no issues or complaints.

Eve is an outcast necromancer kicked out of the supernatural force called sanctuary for not wanting to toe the line and do their bidding causing her to lose the life and love of the people she grew up with.

She’s none too happy how they placed limits on her powers, where she can go, what she can do and who she can interact with. So she lives a life on the fringe, telling half truths when they catch her and trying to stay off their radar while still trying to make a living as a necromancer.

She has been hired to find a humans sister but they haven’t given her much to go on in terms of information. Then here comes a troll king who wants her help because sanctuary declined to help. But sanctuary will allow her to help the troll only if they can provide her with a guard - sanctuaries Enforcer.

She goes on this wild journey of trying to solve her missing persons case, help the trolls and stay in good standing with sanctuary.

I really enjoyed this book!

Our girl Eve loves to fall into darkness. As much as she gets beat up, no wonder darkness is her old friend.

Good start to a series I'm almost certain the author never finished so I should probably save myself the anguish and not continue, but I will keep reading. I searched desperately for an UF to fall into and after much trial and error, I found this. And I actually like it! Probably should have been in 1st person instead of 3rd. 3rd worked but I believe 1st would serve the story better.

Obvious bad guy was obvious, but even so, the villain managed to pull off something I never guessed. There is much about the necromancer and/or witch abilities we need to further explore. I'm curious if anyone will actually look into how to split/fracture a soul. Someone should.

There are some interesting dynamics and characters. I am curious to see how things play out.

James, Ben, Will, someone should teach Eve how to fight.

This really should have more readers/reviews/ratings. It gives me late 2000s, early 2010s UF vibes, which were some of my favorite reading periods.

I enjoyed this book and thought I was finally seeing diverse Black characters in fantasy. Not quite, although many characters are described as having differing melatones, there is barely any mention of her hair or anything that makes her a diverse character. So frankly she is not culturally any different and as a Black reader that was pretty disappointing. The fantasy world was interesting, a nice take on necromancy. Seems to be a pretty male dominated society. This doesn't seem to challenge any status quo in our society or the made up one. I've read 4 books in the series so far an will still continue on to see what happens. I hope the heroine wont he put into anymore weirdly helpless situations with no escape but to do the dumb thing to further imperil her.

Great Plot Development - Representation Matters

The paranormal world of this book is one that is extensive. There’s everything from Fae folk, to witches, to trolls, to necromancers, and even more classifications. It would be easy to get it all confused, but luckily for us, Ashley took her time with respect to developing the paranormal world as well as the plot. Aside from that, the cover of this book caught my attention as I was looking for my next read. POC are definitely underrepresented when it comes to this genre and I was excited to delve into Bramble and Blood from that knowledge alone. Im so excited that it was so good - and so well written! I’m looking forward to the next installments :) You go, Ashley!! ✨BGM✨

I thoroughly enjoyed Bramble and Blood. It's one the best books that I've recently read. It started slow, but it picked up after the first two chapters. The best thing about B&B is that Beasley takes her time tell the story, so that plot unfolds through characters and not vice versa (This was quite refreshing). In addition, I thought that the world and the characters were interesting. Eve is a sarcastic, smart lead who doesn't back down...even when she probably should. James a complex character with a lot of luggage to unpack. Together, Eve and James are a dynamic pair with great chemistry.

I hope more people discover these books because they are worth reading.

Very good start to a new series!

I really liked this book. Eve Williams is an interesting protagonist. The book is an interesting mix of the worlds of Urban Fantasy that you usually find - necromancers, witches, druids, trolls...with a lot else mixed into this delicious batter. My only complaint is I knew who the villain was the second I met him. He was just too villain-ish! But other than that, I loved this book. I'd recommend this series to anyone who loves Seanan McGuire's "October Daye" series .

I want to give this 5 stars because the plot and world building are 5 star material.

My only complaint is that Eve is in such an awful position and we sympathize with her and she’s constantly being put down by James. It’s frustrating and the lack of James POV makes it hard to feel anything but frustration and helplessness. So the author does a good job making you feel Eve’s anger and sorrow and so forth but the result is not satisfying to read. It’s missing the catharsis.

But overall a great read

Real, convincing, and enjoyable.

It's refreshing to read an urban fantasy book where the main character isn't a snarky/sassy kid just barely out of their teens. Eve feels like a real person, with real issues, and some heavy baggage that's going to need some work to unpack.
The prejudice shown in the book also feels real, and it adds an extra layer of depth to the world building.

A convincing and enjoyable read.

It seems to be a cool story so far, but I'm trying to see where the author is going. There seems to be maybe a budding romance between Eve and James, and I must say that I'm not really feeling him, even though the author seems to be alluding to him holding two souls and one of them makes me treat her a bit callously. I'm also a bit confused by this love hate relationship she seems to have with the druids. what's the big deal with the head honcho, will these mystery parents have something to do with the story line in the future. These tidbits I've given so far will tell you nothing of this current story.
The story is decent but I don't really feel that drive to go and read the next story in the lineup.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed this book. Interesting world the author created with necromancers, trolls, druids, witches, fae and the mundane humans. I like the spunky main character who is all but banished from the druids that raised her and given many restrictions on her magic but she manages to carve her own path and not let them push her around. Interesting interactions with the acerbic Enforcer. I am interested to see how she co rd further into her own power.

Good reas

DNF at 38%. While the story itself started off promising, I quickly grew bored. I didn’t connect to Eve and felt like the story was just meandering through with no purpose. Maybe it picks up as you continue in but I’m not forcing myself to read something that isn’t hitting with me.

I also found it difficult to connect with the authors writing style. To be blunt, I hated it. The way she writes feels so disconnected and it just really frustrated me

Absolutely fantastic paranormal story! Unputdownable reading

Well developed characters, vivid descriptions with a plot that keeps you hooked from the first page. Lots of different supernatural creatures each trying to get something from poor Eve. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. For a new author, I really enjoyed this one

Stay up late at night type of book

The synopsis of this one did not catch me as much as it should have, but I enjoyed everything about this one. The mystery, the magic, the characters were all worth it. I hope to see romance between James and Eve, but I know if this happens it might take a couple more books and I'm fine with that. Definitely sticking with this UF series.

A very enjoyable novel. I really liked Eve; I couldn't point out what exactly it is that appeals to me other than I could see being friends with her. This has an interesting twist on druids and necromancers. A good plot that is wrapped up in the book but enough interesting threads I'm looking forward to in the next book.

Immersive world building

This book had me hooked from the beginning, I think mainly from the writing style and then the story itself consuming my mind. I loved this world that I could easily imagine as if I was there and the creative characters were a cherry on top. It was really my kind of book. Please give it a chance if you can.

worthwhile read

The book started off a little slowly, and I almost set it aside. Luckily I didn't because it picked-up, introduced interesting characters and led to an almost decent solve. I think that the next book will be better since the base has been laid out and a more intricate story can be told.

I loved this book! I loved the world building and the pacing was really good. Eve is awesome and I am totally happy I already have the next three books. Cinder is a minor character but she's adorable so I hope she shows up in later books. Also I am all aboard the SS Eve X James. Just saying.

Great murder/mystery

First time reading a book from this author and the book was amazing. It is hard to find a good murder/mystery supernatural book. The book held my attention the whole time. The female lead was not too strong willed and not wimpy. The story was great.
