It’s 1941. While Europe is emblazoned in a devastating war, America sits blissfully neutral. An ocean separates them from the conflict, but not everyone believes the states are safe from the Nazi threat.
His Mission… Zach Edgars, code name Neptune, and his team of undercover ONI operatives are in North Carolina hunting German spies working on American soil. Their only clue is a slip of paper in a dead informant’s pocket that reads, Shanghaied in Wilmington.
Her World… Sophie Moore, grew up working in her father’s pub, the Shanghaied, situated near the newly built emergency shipyard. She’s used to dodging wayward hands and the occasional drunken brawl, but a newcomer in the dark trench coat and with the swagger of a pirate has her feeling nervous. Despite his involvement with the locals’ less-than legal activity, something about Neptune makes her think there might be more to the man.
Danger On The Horizon… When her friend goes missing, Sophie finds herself and her father's bar thrust in the middle of a dangerous game of cloak and dagger. Can she trust this pirate, or will she and her father lose everything—life, love and liberty?
USA Today bestselling author, Suzanne Ferrell discovered romance novels in her aunt’s hidden stash one summer as a teenager. From that moment on she knew two things: she loved romance stories and someday she'd be writing her own. Her love for romances has only grown over the years. It took her a number of years and a secondary career as a nurse to finally start writing her own stories.
The author of 20 novels and an Amazon best-seller for both her series, the Edgars Family Novels and the Westen series, Suzanne's books have been finalists in the National Reader's Choice Awards--SEIZED (2013) and VANISHED (2014). Suzanne was also a double finalist in the Romance Writers of America's 2006 Golden Heart with her manuscripts, KIDNAPPED (Long Contemporary Category) and HUNTED (Romantic Suspense).
Currently working on more books for her Edgars Family series (KIDNAPPED, HUNTED, SEIZED, VANISHED, EXPOSED, UNMASKED and SHANGHAIED, part of a pre-WWII spy-chaser spin-off series) and the Westen Series (Close To Home, Close To The Edge, Close To The Fire, Close To Christmas, Close To The Mistletoe, Close To Santa’s Heart and Close To Danger), Suzanne hopes to bring readers more passionate and suspenseful books to fill your reading moments. Suzanne's sexy stories, whether they are her on the edge of your seat romantic suspense or the heartwarming small town stories or historical suspense novels, will keep you thinking about her characters long after their Happy Ever After is achieved.
Set in 1941, along the North Carolina coast, SHANGHAIED begins the story of Zach Edgars and Sophie Moore, characters who would eventually become the grandparents of Ferrell's present-day Edgars Family heroes and heroines. It's a story filled with emotion, intrigue, and ever-increasing suspense, much like the country itself was experiencing in those final days leading up to America's entry into what would become WWII. I was hooked from page one and my attention never wavered. Ferrell does an outstanding job of bringing the reader into this world with era-specific language and descriptions, atmospheric settings, and characters so vividly portrayed I found myself believing they had actually lived rather than being products of the author's imagination. SHANGHAIED is the first of several books planned for this earlier generation and I am excited to read them all. Not only am I looking forward to more adventures with Sophie and Zach, but I'm hopeful we'll be seeing more of Zach's military undercover team as well. As with the two leads, Ferrell brings the secondary characters to life and left me wanting to know more about these brave young men.
SHANGHAIED is a special treat for fans of Suzanne Ferrell's Edgars Family series but stands on its own as a wonderful introductory prequel for readers who have yet to discover these romantic suspense stories.
Shanghaied by Suzanne Ferrell is an on-the-edge of your seat romantic suspense set in WWII. This spy story is the first in a new series, Neptune's 5 and I can't wait to read the next installment. Every book Suzanne releases has stellar covers that scream "read me" - kudos to the cover designer!
It's the little details regarding the characters, the setting, and the story that kept me reading. Each character is vivid, has memorable dialogue and captures your interest.
If you love romantic suspense don't miss this new series from Suzanne - you will be on the edge of your seat until the last page!
I received a free copy of the book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a fair and honest review.
Shanghaied prequels the Edgars family series. In this book, we meet Zach Edgars, an Office of Naval Intelligence Agent and Sophie Moore, the hardworking daughter of the owner of the bar, Shanghaied , they are the great grandparents of the Edgars that we met in the Edgars family series. I really enjoyed reading this book, I gave it 5 stars because it held my attention from beginning until the end. There's lot of thrills and excitement that keeps you reading and reading trying to figure out who the spy is. I love how the author has the ability to make you feel as if you are right there in the same time period as her characters are and leaves you wishing that the story was a little longer. I highly recommend Suzanne Ferrell, and all of her other books, she is a very talented author and I am looking forward to future books in this new series.
What an original book! I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading Shanghaied. It caught my attention from page one. Most of the historical romances that I have read have taken place long before 1941 - the year in which this book takes place. The mystery plotline drew me in and the charcters grounded and vested me in the story. Hopefully, there will be more books in this series. With so many great characters, I think Ms. Ferrell could easily create more fantastic stories.
I loved the Edgars' family books. I have the ebooks and audio versions. I always liked that the author stopped the series rather than trying to bring in extended family as heroes to stretch the series out.
This is part of the Edgars family story but the setting is 1941. Zach Edgars and his team are part of naval intelligence and working undercover. They're looking for German spies along the east coast. The only clue they have is the name of a bar close to vital factories and a new shipyard in North Carolina.
The mystery kept me engaged. I liked how Zach and Sophie worked together. Although the book only deals with the beginning of their relationship it's apparent they made a great couple. There wasn't any sex and only the beginning of a romantic relationship. You don't have to read the Edgars family books. If you have you'll like the epilogue, and understand why the book stays PG-13.
With “Shanghaied,” Suzanne Ferrell has written a gem of a story. It’s the start of a new series, set during WWII, and, while technically a prequel to her Edgars family series, it works as a stand-alone novel. I love her Edgars Family series and in this first book of the Neptune’s Five series, she goes back a ways in the family history to the early days of WWII before the US had formally joined the war. With pirates and spies, a handsome hero and a spunky heroine, this story hits all the right buttons. This is Zach’s and Sophie’s – the family patriarch and matriarch – story. The romance is relatively mild, but no less satisfying. The story is really about espionage and catching traitors. Because I know German U-boats hunkered down right off the eastern seaboard (there’s a great dive to one about 30 miles off of Morehead City, NC) and that spies and saboteurs came ashore from them, the story has a good basis in reality. Zach leads a team of handpicked men, each of whom brings different specialized skills to the group. The team dynamics feel real and I’m looking forward to reading each man’s story. Sophie and her father run a bar in a rough, waterfront town. The Depression has wound down, but there’s still a bit of desolation in the air, even if new work is coming in thanks to the increased need for ships and supplies for England. Ms. Ferrell captures that feeling. These are tough men, living in tough times, and knowing that it is only going to get tougher. While we know who some of the bad guys are, the real villain was a surprise. Who it is, well, you’ll need to read the book to find out.
It’s 1941 and Europe is at war. The United States finds itself at the cusp of the conflict, barely taking a deep breath for the fear of being drawn in. For Zachariah “Neptune” Edgars, he and his superiors at the US Navy Intelligence know it is only a matter of time before the US is also engaged in the conflict as the enemy is trying to infiltrate America at every turn. When it becomes clear that the enemy may already be aground within America, Neptune and his crew must find and neutralize the threat.
What an excellent start to what I know will be an amazing series! I love that this is not your usual Regency England historical romance (not that those aren’t terrific) but one that takes place during an important era in American history that usually is not covered in the historical and/or romantic suspense genre. I love this author’s writing; the way Ms. Ferrell is able to bring character development, the storyline and pace of the plot together is so smooth and “effortless” that before you know it, you are totally immersed in the book! The romance is period-appropriate and perfectly balanced with the suspense to create a riveting story.
As for Sophie and Zack – the chemistry and strength between these two characters is charming and inspiring. Much as “Neptune” is the leader of the group, Sophie and Zach are the “Northstar” for the Five and the series itself. And what an excellent link to the Edgars Family series, as these characters are the prequel to Ms. Ferrell’s first series (which are excellent reads as well.) I cannot wait for the next adventure the Neptune Five will take me on!
SHANGHAIED is the first book in the Neptune's Five series and is an amazing start to the series.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I loved it! It has history, espionage, secrets, traitors, pirates and spies. The characters are well developed and the storyline kept my interest from start to finish. I would love to read more books in this series.
Book one in the Edger Family/Neptune's Five series a well written war story that kept me turning pages. I found I needed a Kleenex as I read this emotional story. This is Captain Zachariah Edgars in the U.S. Navy an undercover ONI operative with the code name Neptune, and Sophie Moore who works in her Father's pub the Shanghaied. I want to read more in this series. This is a new Author to me. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow!! What an amazing ride! This book is one that I had a terrible time putting down as I easily got absorbed into the plot and characters. The mixture of historical fiction with suspense and romance has made this book my favorite read for the week!!
