Locked and Found is about two fourteen year old cousins, Jess and Ella, who find a family memory box in the attic full of mystery items including a set of keys. This discovery brings them on a journey for answers about who left the items behind and what happened to the baby who once wore the little dress the keys were wrapped in. The journey leads the girls up their family tree and back and to unexpected new information about their family.
For readers in the U.S., this books takes place in Scotland and the author is from New Zealand so there are some words throughout you might not be familiar with such as tyre instead of tire and mum instead of mom. But don’t let this intimidate you. It greatly adds to the depth of the culture of the story.
I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but I admit I always do. The beautiful cover is what first drew me to this book. And as a professional genealogist, I became very intrigued when the girls began looking at their family tree, the family castle, family photos, and their family stories. I love books that talk about how people are connected to each other. One of my favorite parts of the book was when they began finding where each key fit and the excitement of finding the clues left inside each container.
Things really began heating up when the girls decided to go full out in their search and I couldn’t put the book down until I learned all the family secrets!
This is a clean book with no violence, cussing, or steamy scenes and is appropriate for all ages. Although I would call this a Young Adult book based on the age of the main characters, adults will love it too. I’m an adult, and I loved it!
As a first novel it was a great success. In part because the twisting story line was so very interesting. It was also well written with only a few errors that were not caught in edit. I loved the characters. The girls especially, although if they were mine I'm sure I would have knocked their heads together. 😊 I'm very interested in genealogy and history, this mystery had all the right components put together the way you want them. I do recommend this delightful book.
