A new take on "public speaking" by the author of Gravitas with a TEDx Talk viewed 6.5 million times. Whether you want more social confidence in your day-to-day life, are hosting an event, or are appearing on a podcast, Find Your Voice will empower you to be bold, be present and captivate any audience. Based on decades of helping broadcasters, celebrities, teachers and top level professionals speak effortlessly in front of others, renowned voice teacher and communication expert Caroline Goyder will show you how to harness the full potential of your body, breath and voice; genuinely connect to others in a dizzyingly distracted world; and stand out as a calm speaker, whatever the situation.
This book focuses on the secret to building confidence in public speaking. It has a very practical approach that one could apply when trying out public speaking, whether as a first time speaker or otherwise. It is definitely a fun, as well as good read.
Find Your Voice carries an important message for our times. At its heart are all the qualities we need from our political leaders right now: collaboration, empathy and a desire to speak up - not to be heard, to apportion blame or to self-congratulate - but to constructively 'move things forward'. This book encourages us to remove the self-imposed pressure that so often accompanies 'public speaking', and explores the true nature of inner confidence: a willingness to listen, to learn and engage, and to resist the anxiety that urges us to 'speak' and to choose instead to express the ideas that really matter to us and to contribute. A book that goes far beyond standard personal and professional development and challenges the way we approach all human interaction. Well worth reading.
I recommend this book for those who have plenty of ideas to express but lack the confidence to do so. It's full of tips and advice that help you to understand your voice and its power.
As an introvert with much to say but lets anxiety and nerves get in the way, I found this book to be rather inspiring and I can imagine I will be referring to it often.
Caroline Goyder’s third book, "Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation", continues illustrating how she successfully melds her dramatic training, inherent intelligence, and keen understanding of human nature into a transformative whole. Her years working for London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama as a voice coach contributes mightily to her impact as a public speaker. Her frequent media appearances and a TED Talk logging more than 7.5 million viewers testify to her talents in the public arena. Her public speaking exerts an obvious influence over her writing for this book, but it never reads like a transcript from some recent appearance. She works as a trainer with senior management in a variety of organizations and private individuals as well. It is ultimately up for readers to decide, but many will find this book to be her best yet.
Goyder builds the book in five chapters full of brief multiple sections. These sections cover a myriad of topics and their condensed focus helps make "Find Your Voice" a tight and fast-paced reading experience. Goyder, three books into her writing career, demonstrates the skills of a much more experienced author. There is no detectable unease in her presentation and she writes convinced of the worthiness of her message and how to put it across to the reader. There are several “Try This” exercises included throughout the book designed to encourage deeper involvement from readers and a smattering of illustrations accompany the text that reinforces points in the text. Her choice of quotes throughout the book are eclectic and invariably on point.
The tone she adopts is uniformly positive. This isn’t to say she takes on a delusional air, viewing the world through the proverbial rose-colored glasses – she acknowledges our human frailty at every turn with a mature and insightful eye. It is clear from the beginning Goyder’s overriding interest is helping others realize their potential. There’s no feeling that she’s written this book as an ego exercise or to further burnish her reputation.
There is a small amount of repetition in the text. Goyder constantly reminds readers in various ways about how the voice is a manifestation of their personalities, but this is a small flaw in an otherwise fine book. There are other exercises included in the book beyond the “Try This” examples and they are physically oriented, but never demanding. They are simple and straight-forward activities anyone can do in the privacy of their own home. The confluence of elements powering this book are well orchestrated and complement each other – it is a clear indication of the planning Goyder put into this book before beginning.
"Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation" is the sort of book those interested in self-actualization will pursue with great relish. Caroline Goyder’s reputation as an author is sure to grow thanks to this book and the clarity of her vision for assisting people is impressive and unwavering throughout the entirety of this book.
I LOVE THIS BOOK, and perhaps it's only book in my goodreads list for which I have this confession. A must read for anyone who can speak. I am diarizing the exercises given in this book and determined to make them part of everyday life: - Vegal Tone Exercise 4-7-8 breathing while imaging jellyfish and breathing from diaphragm - Boddy buzzing - engaging your whole body in the speaking process - Take a half before moments which matter the most - Pilates, Alexander technique - Front Foot Energy - The Magnificence: posture and feet firmness - Get out of your head and Camera Out - Speaking as a way to Contribution - Looking speaking as Work, Rest and Play phases - Draw a Mind Map - Say Thank You to Your Inner Editor - Wake Up Your Range - Pull the Sound In - Bricks in the Wall - Clear, Muscular Speech
I would like to read all the works mentioned in the Further Read section.
Tuo ji man ir patiko.
An easy reader, full of anecdotes that is calming and reflecting. Goyder breaks down the sometimes daunting and intimidating task of public speaking into nuggets of memorable gold. When taken by surprise recently to interview on film for two minutes after winning a company award, I was able to transfer the rush of surprise and nervousness from fast and dizzy to energy, I had the wherewithal to remember a snippet of Goyder’s advice as the green cover of this book sprang into my mind. I corrected my posture, slowed down my speaking voice and focussed on the key highlights I had wanted what meaning the award meant for our company. I said all I wanted to say and most of all, enjoyed the experience! Get this “little green book” into your confidence back catalogue!
Pajuskite savo kaulus."
An incredibly practical book, in which you don't have to take every single point or activity home with you (you don't even need to agree with every point), but what you do take from this book by your own judgement will undoubtedly be a great step in your journey to speaking confidently.
The Maslow's hierarchy of needs barely worked as a structure for me, but you can look past that and just take what you need. This was a library loan but I'll definitely be thinking about buying my own copy so I can keep referring back to it
This is a great book and it gives you some fantastic ideas especially to a novice!! It hones in on different elements of speaking in each chapter plus it’s got some tasks for you to practice at home. The only negative aspect I found about this book is that I felt it was very drawn out at the start and at the end and I felt I only got 60% of the read. Could of done with some more content. But nevertheless still a good read with the information provided.
Brilliant book! The bible to all things voice and confidence. Written in an informal, fun style but packed with serious info and exercises that you'll return to on a daily basis. Caroline Goyder has such a clear method of explaining that makes light work of boosting your confidence to levels you didn't know were possible! Thank you so much for writing this!
"Find Your Voice" is an excellent resource if you want to work on your speaking and presentation skills. What I found most interesting and helpful, however, was the author's explanations of how our breathing and posture influence not only our speaking but our overall well-being — a fascinating and inspiring read.
This is a self-help book to help with public speaking techniques and good posture and tricks to help speak confidently and powerfully with confidence. There are tips throughout the book on these different exercises and it helps you to think about the process. The book was ok but there were occasions I wanted it to get more to the point.
Decided not to continue with this, it's very sciency and therefore not for me lol. I'd say it would be a good book for anyone who sings or is on stage as it has a lot of exercises for you to try out.
