Tuttavia, Elliot è testardo fino all’imprudenza.

Once again Ms. Z does not disappoint.

Eliot, a former lawyer and felon, has turned his life around setting up an elite business that helps others rebuild their lives after horrific mistakes. His clientele is often high class with the need for anonymity which not surprisingly, makes him a target for criticism and scrutiny. However, when his shady past comes back to threaten his current success, Eliot’s forced to take on security that comes attached with an enticing haunted man.

Lennox, a former Army Ranger, is trying to get his life back together while dealing with PTSD and a lot of guilt. He’s slowly making progress at his steady job as a security expert, when he begrudgingly does a favor for his ex sister-in-law’s boss. Lennox doesn’t expect to form an immediate connection with such an outgoing persona, and he sure as hell doesn’t expect to feel so protective over said stranger either.

Both these men aren’t for relationships. Eliot just doesn’t have the time for such nor does he need any emotional attachments after his last disastrous love connection. Lennox feels he’s barely functioning as it is, let alone successfully navigating his tenuous relationship with his teen daughter, so dating is the furthest thing from his current life plan. However, neither can deny their mutual attraction, and their interactions are intense, funny, and real. When the various threats on Eliot’s life escalate, Lennox realizes he has to take things into his own hands to save the man he’s falling for.

By far, this is the sexiest of Z’s works I’ve come across, and I’m definitely a happy reader. I’m also happy because she also doesn’t neatly fit Lennox and Eliot into preconceived, nice and neat cliches. She allows both of them to surprise the reader in different and vulnerable ways which was quite refreshing.

Overall, this was another win as it kept me on my toes. Though I haven’t come close to reading all of this author’s works, I will say that so far, no two books have been the same, each offering different voices, tropes, and genres. I look forward to further going through Z’s backlog to discover what’s sure to be more great varied reads!

3.5 stars rounded up because HOLLY!

Friendly Fire is a good book that sadly could have been a great book.

Elliot is a man who beat his demons and is successfully working on his second chance with a new business venture called Charmed Life, a community of former addicts who support one another in their own second chance.

Lennox is a former Army Sergeant who is working on his own second chance after suffering a catastrophe overseas while he was in command. He is currently in therapy to help overcome his PTSD and help with the strained relationship he has with his teen-aged daughter.

The plot was interesting and very suspenseful and I enjoyed all of the characters very much, especially Lennox's daughter Lee and Elliot's personal assistant Serena. But, oh how the relationship between Lennox and Elliot could have been SO MUCH BETTER!

There is sex in this book. Hot sex. But very little. I think 3 scenes? Maybe 4. Unfortunately, all were before Lennox and Elliot had strong feelings for one another. It was just sex. Scratching an itch. Friends with benefits. As for romance, I didn't see it. At times Lennox and Elliot's inner dialogues were thinking warm, happy thoughts about the other, but nothing is ever said out loud. The epilogue was woefully inadequate and told us rather than showed us the warm bond that obviously grew between the two men.

But the biggest gripe I have is the missed opportunity for some delicious healing/comfort. Lennox is absolutely destroyed by an event that happened when he was in Afghanistan, to the point that he won't even let his daughter spend the night with him because his nightmares are so vivid that he is afraid for her safety if he wakes her during one. Not only did we not get a nice nightmare comfort scene (one of my personal favorites!) but Lennox never even TALKS about it with Elliot! Oh, it would have been glorious, I know it!

Good book, could have been great. I do recommend this one, but be prepared for stifled emotions and minimal romance. The mystery was exciting and suspenseful so if that is your bag, you will highly enjoy this one.

Bonus points for Holly!

3.5 Hearts

I know a certain author type person was nervous about this one due to it being out of her comfort zone, but I enjoyed myself reading this AND I found the mystery storyline with its twists and turns gripping.

The thriller storyline was involved and kept me on my toes without overtaking the story. I’m a fan of thrillers but I REALLY like it when the mystery or event brings the two protagonists together which is what happens between Lennox and Elliot.

I like both characters but I found myself more drawn to Lennox. He’s a veteran who made a mistake in the line of duty and can't seem to forgive himself. He’s also a BAMF. You want him on your side in the event of a crisis. He’s a natural leader, observant, loyal and logical, so when the shit hits the fan he doesn’t lose his cool. I see him as the ultimate caregiver-very protective of those he cares for and willing to sacrifice himself for their safety if need be, but not recklessly.

The shit has definitely hit Elliot’s fan. He’s being stalked and terrorized, but can’t go to the authorities for fear of torpedoing his sister’s bid for DA. Again. I’ll come back to this. His company is on the brink of going next level with a black tie event that has the crème de la crème on the guest list, so negative publicity he does not need. His fireball of a PA, Serena, suggests her ex-brother in law install a home security system and flirting turns into more flirting.

It’s supposed to just be a come and go which, honestly, I never really got why Elliot was so set on but no matter, the universe has different plans for them. Their relationship strengthens as the thriller intensifies and they wend up living together for all intents and purposes.

There is heat and passion between them with great begging and dirty talk. *grunts*

But they don’t have that butterfly inducing intensity. What they do have is comfortable, like that old pair of jeans that just fits. Despite their relationship’s origin being so chaotic I’m convinced that it has longevity.

While reading this I was trying to pinpoint why it is that I like Cari’s writing so much. I’ve seen people describe writing styles as being “clean”. I admit I don’t quite know what that means but I’ve decided to appropriate it. She can convey a sentiment, an atmosphere, a feeling with a few carefully chosen words. She uses language with precision. Her usage of the excerpts at the beginning of each chapter was a clever way of introducing the MCs backstories without being info dumpy. And in the case of this particular story, I loved all the moments with Lee, Lennox’s daughter. Ordinarily, I don’t like books with kids in them, but her teenage characterization was perfection.

My one quibble is Vanessa and I don’t think this is spoilery, but here goes… Vanessa and Elliot had a falling out. Wait, let me back up. They *seemed* to be quite close as kids. She’s older than him and their parents are deceased, so they’re all the other has. Elliot fucked up. He’s not overtly culpable for what happened, but he knew what was what and didn’t say anything, so culpable by proxy in my book. After it all blew up he spun out and developed an addiction to opiates then wound up in rehab. All of this negatively impacted her and cost her the election for DA. She arranged for him to go to rehab and then cut all ties.

Now, I’ve got a whole gaggle of family most of whom have fucked up major at one point or another. There has been some tough love doled out on my part, but I’ve never cut them off. I get the whole every family has a different dynamic, but when that’s your ONLY family? It seems really harsh and I had a hard time swallowing it. However, I get why from a narrative standpoint that you’ve got to maintain the “he can’t go to the police” sentiment for it to work so... there is that. I just didn't like it and am hoping Lennox gives her the business at some point.

Regardless, it was an entertaining romance/thriller smashup that kept me guessing and I would recommend it to romance/thriller smashup fans or Cari Z. fans.

Review to come!!

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

10/8/16 Full review posted

Elliot McKenzie is turning his life around. He survived losing his job and so much more but he is ready to start is life over with his new start up Charmed Life, a place where people can go for a second chance at life. Whether the person is overcoming substance abuse or person who is just needs some help. When he receives threatening notes and phone calls, he is the one who needs help.

Sargent Lennox West is suffering from PTSD. Now home, he is working as a security expert, but is still struggling from guilt over a Friendly Fire incident that happened in Afghanistan. The type of guilt that stays with him, even though he is no way responsible. He is asked by his sister in law for help with her boss. It seems like someone wants to hurt Mr. McKenzie.

Even though I did really enjoy this story, I felt like the “romance” part was missing, and as a couple, Elliot and Lennox didn’t have any emotional connection at all. To me, their relationship was more “friends with benefits.” Neither of them discussed their struggles or trauma with each other. Maybe if there was a healing/comfort aspect, it would have helped in developing their relationship and making it more believable.

Yes, I would recommend this book. It had very likeable characters and a surprising mystery going on. I did enjoy the writing and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Solid 4 Star read for me! This is a new to me author, which is always a bit risky.

But I'm always on the lookout for good MM romantic suspense reads.

I can't say this one wowed me but I certainly enjoyed it. The romance probably took a bit of a backseat to the suspense but the balance was decent.

I could of used a bit more comfort/healing. Also a bit more development in certain areas. I never really understood what Charmed Life was and I never really felt like Lennox overcame his nightmares. It was just sort of implied by the therapist entries at the beginning of the chapters.

Some steam in this one, more than I was expecting actually. Low angst relationship wise.

I'm glad I gave this one a go and would recommend it for those that enjoy romantic suspense.

Audiobook: 3.5 Stars
Story: 3 Stars

I liked it, but I guess I would have loved it more if Elliot had been more likeable. For me, he was too manipulative, complacent and sleek for more than half of the book.
The protocols about Lennox's therapy sessions and the interviews of Elliot by this reporter got on my nerves and pulled me out of the story more often than not.
The mystery part was well done, though.

This was my first audiobook narrated by Nick J. Russo and maybe I just picked up the wrong book. He did an amazing job with the side characters, but his voices for Lennox and Elliot were not distinctive enough for me. He sometimes forgot the huskiness in Lennox's voice and that made it hard for me to decipher who was talking at the moment. Of course, that won't keep me from listening to other audiobooks by him. :)

I'm going to start at the beginning with this one and once again that means I want to talk about the cover. While I don't factor covers into my rating, I do like to mention them especially when they appeal to me as much as this one did. I won't lie between the cover and the blurb for this book, I was hooked. I wanted to read this book and that's what book covers and blurbs are for. They're just another way to promote the story within and in this case for me they worked really well. Now onto the story within...

Have you ever met someone and things have just clicked into place with them and just to be clear I'm not talking about insta-love here. I'm talking about those times when you meet a person and you're comfortable with them from the word go, conversation comes easily, you like them from the minute you meet, there's a level of comfort and trust that you don't always get with everyone you meet. This was Elliot and Lennox. From the moment they met they liked each other, yes there was physical attraction but what there wasn't was that impression of 'oh-my-god-this-is-it. He's the one' nope, it was more like 'This guy's cool and hot. I'd hang out with him. Hell, I'd even do him, if he's interested.' No wedding bells or starry eyed wonder' here. These are two mature men who have each had more than their share of life experiences.

The romantic part of the story was driven by a bit of mystery and suspense, but it never fully took over or surpassed the relationship that was developing between these two men. If anything at times the mystery/suspense part of the story gave the romance a bit of a push.

For me one of the best things about this story was the casual and comfortable way these two men bantered back and forth with each other and with everyone else for that matter...
"You're not going to offer me a beanbag chair?"
"I wouldn't want to insult your dress. It would clash so terribly with the paisley pattern." Elliot sat across from her. "Now. What would you like to talk about first, my being shot or my addictions?"

and then there's Serena, Elliot's assistant and Lennox's ex-sister-in-law and her own force of nature...
"The chips?"
Serena sighed. "She said to bring a side and I don't cook, you know that. this is why I have all my parties catered.
"Don't worry," he assured her with a wink. "I don't judge."

and Lennox tends to have equally interesting conversations...
"You're done early tonight."
"I've got a thing with the ex and her family."
Carl shook his head. "What part of ex don't you understand? You don't stay friends with 'em, Lennox; that's how you go crazy. You give 'em alimony and child support and take the kids over the summer. That's how you handle an ex."

Add to all this a moody but pretty cool teenage daughter, a Pomeranian named Holly and a co-worker who seems a little too anxious to shoot things then throw in some steamy lovin' between our sexy MCs and you've got the makings of a story that I can totally get behind.

While Cari Z is not an entirely new to me author, 'Friendly Fire' is my first time reading a full length novel by her and this definitely won't be the last one either, if I'm going to be as thoroughly entertained as I was by this time around.

A Treat!

There are three distinct things I loved about this book.

1. The writing:
Every so often a book comes along that is so well written that the writing doesn't even factor in to the story as a perception for the reader. That's a rather convoluted way of saying "I forgot I was reading." I became completely immersed in the story and never once ran across anything in the writing that distracted me enough to look up and remember I was reading a book. This is always a super treat for me since it happens infrequently.

2. The plot:
This is a gay suspense romance. Most of the gay romance I read focuses on the gayness of the characters and possibly the challenges they face either with themselves or with others around them. This plot accepts the characters' sexual orientation as a given and does not depend on gay drama to enrich it. Such a refreshing treat!

3. The characters:
Elliot and Lennox are fully grown men. They lived and learned and experienced life before they met. These are mature characters that do not play any type of childish games in their romance. We do not need the miscommunication device or the hurt feelings one or any of the other overused ways of creating tension and artificial angst. These characters live in the story without need of any fabricated anxiety.

I am so impressed with this author. She managed to write a suspense novel with a huge helping of gay/bi romance without falling on any of the exploited devices of the genre.

A buddy review with Cupcake!

Cari Z is a very versatile author. Whether it’s sci-fi, fantasy, or contemporary, she can write different genres, and she can do it well. ‘Friendly Fire’, a contemporary thriller, was no different. It’s well-written, and captured my attention from early on.

Right off the bat, one thing I loved was that Lennox had a good relationship with his ex-wife and her family. It’s nice to see something positive, instead of the usual family drama in MM. I also liked Lee, Lennox’s daughter. She’s got some teen angst, but Lee was relatable instead of annoying.

Though both Elliot and Lennox have baggage, the start of their romance is fairly easy-going. They meet, feel an attraction, act on that attraction, and then go back for more. It was easy to connect with both MCs, and to understand what they saw in each other. Given their backgrounds, I was rooting for them from the moment they met.

Compared to the mystery aspect of the book, the romance was low-drama and low-angst, which worked well. Lennox and Elliot’s relationship was sweet without becoming fluffy.

It also didn’t hurt that Lennox and Elliot were on fire in the bedroom. If you’re a fan of dirty talk, you’ll like the sexy times in this book.

But I would say that the romance is secondary to the mystery in ‘Friendly Fire’. Elliot and Lennox’s relationship ends up taking a backseat, which isn’t a bad thing, but it did leave a few things unfinished. In particular, I thought they needed to work on communication, especially around Lennox’s PTSD. That’s one of those serious issues that can’t be swept under the rug.

That being said, this author knows how to build suspense and weave a mystery. I did have an inkling around the halfway point about what was going on, but I enjoyed the ride nonetheless. The resolution to it all was fairly believable, and didn’t go OTT.

Overall, I enjoyed ‘Friendly Fire’. Had there been more relationship development, I would have given this an extra star. As it is, it’s a sweet romance with an entertaining mystery. Recommended if you’re looking for something lighter on the romance, with a good plot.

It's no secret that I'm a Cari Z. fan. So when I saw that she had a full length contemporary story coming out, I jumped all over that. She normally writes fantasy and the occasional post-apocalyptic gem. For those who haven't had a glimpse of the awesome contemporary style of this author, please let me point you to Making It Work.

Friendly Fire was a good, entertaining read. We have two MCs with less than stellar pasts, if we go by their self-judgments. Elliot is a former lawyer, now life coach for the reformed, who is being stalked. Lennox is a former Army Ranger who works for a security company. The story is told from dual POV, which is always a win for me.

There is immediate chemistry when Lennox is doing a home installation of a security system for Elliot, but then there's immediate escalation of danger from Elliot's stalker. This necessitates Lennox to intervene, causing the men to go from zero to sixty in the getting-to-know-you phase. They are thrust together through the circumstances of Elliot's life, while the feelings between them continue to grow.

I adore this author's style of writing, and I was never bored. Not for a second of this very long story. I could actually feel Cari's enthusiasm of the whole whodunit aspect of the book. And the secondary characters were really fun, especially Lennox's daughter and Elliot's assistant.

Unfortunately, for my own preferences, what I didn't feel was the intensity of the relationship. It took a backseat to the mystery plot. As well as everything was written, and even with dual POVs, I was left wondering how these men truly felt about each other. I could feel their attraction and their connection, don't get me wrong. But a tentative HFN was all I really got out of them because the relationship wasn't at the forefront of the story, which is my preference. Even the sweet epilogue, which was adorable, didn't give me my three little words.

I still give a solid 4 stars to this one because it was very well written, and I truly enjoyed the story overall. The mystery was engaging, and it was fun to read about. The smexy times - very hawt indeed, Cari Z. Kudos on that too!

I tried. There was a lot of love for this book and I was trying to find out why.. but nothing popped out at me. It was boring and I couldn’t get in to it. Nothing really hooked me in like with other mysteries/suspense romance books.

Nick J Russo did a good job with the narration, that that couldn’t save me from not connecting with any character.

Oh well on to the next.

So that was my review when I read this book nearly a year ago and really nothings changed it's the same story I remember reading and not only did I enjoy the audio book as much...actually a bit more than reading the book and that was very much due to the awesome narrating skills of Nick J. Russo. Mr. Russo's definitely one of my favorites when it comes to audio books and he's never failed to deliver when it comes to me enjoying an audio book that he's narrated.

'Friendly Fire' is the 15th book that I've listened to by this narrator and honestly I'm only anticipating that number growing...'cause I'm listening to an audio book that's narrated by Nick J. Russo as I type this review...sorry, you'll have to wait to find out which one it is this time but while you're waiting you can always check out Cari Z's 'Friendly Fire' narrated by Nick J. Russo there's a good sample over on audible.com...it's just a thought...Happy listening!

DNF at 42%.

When I had read about 25% the book hadn't managed to grip me yet. That's one quarter of the book with felt like "blah blah blah, get on with it already."

The chapters were interspersed with interview excerpts of one of the MC, Elliot MacKenzie, the big shot self made man, and therapy transcripts of the other MC, army veteran Lennox West. I recon it's like this to add to the characterization of the two main characters? Or another way for me as a reader to learn more about them?

The therapy transcripts were interesting, and did provide me with an insight with Lennox, but they felt rather clinical. That is stating the obvious perhaps, but I felt it created a distance between me and the character I was supposed to learn to know in the beginning of a book.

The interview excerpt were so boring. I just skimmed them. I'd much rather read and make up my own mind about who Elliot MacKenzie is, than reading a dry interview about him.

Both the interview excerpt and the transcribes felt mostly irritating.

The fact that the MCs didn't meet until 20-25% didn't help me feel the story was moving forward either. I made and effort, though, and made it to 42%, but it's not working for me unfortunately.
Bummer.

Friendly Fire by Cari Z. felt like walking into a room and meeting someone new. It felt so real and natural and captivating. I really enjoyed getting to know these guys.

Elliot McKenzie is determined to move past his bad reputation and criminal history. His new self-help business is the talk of the town and on the verge of breakout success. But someone is out to ruin Elliot’s time in the spotlight with threating messages and more. Elliot is determined to ignore the scares. When the danger gets a little too close to home though, Elliot is forced to bring in security. And that’s when Lennox West, ex-Army, comes walking into his world. A man with his own past regrets, guilt, and nightmares. Can these two men learn to forgive themselves and work through their pasts? Can they find a future together?

And together was just how I liked them. Elliott’s bold and determined energy clicked almost instantly with Lennox’s solid, reassuring presence. I loved their chemistry and time on the page. It felt very natural to me. Easy and relaxed and sexy. I felt included in their days and nights. And the way Cari Z. mixed the family into the action was perfect. The side characters never felt like distractions or just included for future spin offs. The women in Lennox and Elliot’s lives added a level of heart and laughs that helped build a solid picture of these guys. I could see them. Plus the women were kickass! I loved them all! The mystery was super obvious, but I really didn’t care. I just enjoyed being in this book. I loved seeing Lennox and Elliot try to pick up the pieces and live again, trust again, and love again.

Recommended. An inspiring story of redemption with sweetness and dirty talk mixed right in.

I already have another Cari Z. read lined up. Her style fits right into my reading world.

~ 3.5 stars ~

I liked this book! The mystery was great and kept me guessing but something was missing. I can't really put my finger on it. I don't think it was the romance playing second fiddle to the mystery because I love good mysteries and don't necessarily need hearts and flowers to enjoy a story. It's also not that I didn't like the characters because I did! Maybe it was the way the story was told. Maybe I wanted both MCs to talk more to each other about their troubled pasts instead of being given only glimpses here and there. I don't know. What I do know is that I'm looking forward to reading more by Cari Z. !

A quick word about the audiobook: Nick J. Russo was amazing as always!! He is one of my favorite narrators!

Recensione in ANTEPRIMA

Listening to this one just makes me want more Cari Z.! Creative characters and a great story - this was just a bunch of fun all the way through. There's an interesting mystery with a great twist at the end, fast moving action, and super hot sex. Winner for me... and Nick J. Russo is excellent.

This is the first book I've ever read by Cari Z and I have to say, I really liked it a lot! I am definitely going to try to check out a couple of her other books now.

Lennox is a former Army Sergeant who is trying to get his life back back together after making a terrible mistake while on duty. He suffers from PTSD which has caused some distance between him and his teenage daughter.

Elliot is by no means the perfect man either. He is a former lawyer with a darker past but he managed to turn his life around and started a thriving business to help others overcome their pasts as well.

There was a lot of chemistry between the two MCs, which made for a few steamy scenes but there weren't so many that it overwhelmed the story (I think there were maybe 3?). This story had much more plot to back it up. The main focus stayed on the suspense of the story line. I really loved the scenes when Elliot hung out with Lennox and his daughter. I loved the inner monologues of each character when they started getting feelings for each other but I did which for a teeny bit more romance....but I guess that's kind of hard when you have someone trying to kill you. lol! The epilogue was sweet but I wanted a little more.

4,5 stars.
It was totally enjoyable. Not in a nail-biting, can't-breathe way - but an extremely satisfying, interesting, comfortable, emotional read, with the plot part and the relationship part perfectly balanced. It seems like a simple thing but it's really not, to make everything in the book work so well, and in 'Friendly Fire' I liked absolutely, absolutely everything.
Elliot and Lennox - oh God, they both were wonderful. I think I'm not really into characters who behave like assholes and hurt each other all the time. Fortunately, nothing like this here; both of them are so likable it was a joy to read about them. And to see how much happier and more meaningful they make each other's life was great.
I liked Lee. Oh, I can imagine how many things can go wrong with a character like this, how easy it was to make her annoying or simpering. But she was great. Serena was great. Holly was fabulous. Vanessa and Gaby were... not likable at all but you could understand them, even if they played such little roles.

This was ok-ish, 2.5 rounded up. The relationship was too insta for me. The mystery was OTT to me (don't want to spoil it) and the "investigation" too light. I understood the reasons for the light looking into it but still.
Noah he was an ok character, the one being stalked. BUT his business did not make sense to me at all. I liked his relationship with Serena (his right-hand woman) and Lennox's daughter. But something was missing from his relationship with Lennox. Don't get me wrong they were hot.
Lennox we know from the start that he has nightmares and suffers from PTSD but that has almost no bearings on his relationship with Noah or the plot. As soon as he sleeps (actually sleeps) near Noah the nightmares vanish. He barely discusses his nightmare with Noah and feels comfortable with him after 2 meetings for some reasons. I liked his relationships with his daughter and ex-wife but we (or Noah for that matter) don't really get to know him. And that's my main issue with this romance: they don't really get to know each other. They both help each other somewhat (which was nice) but I don't see them having a relationship outside of the extreme circumstances they found themselves in.

I enjoyed this a lot. Elliot is an ex-lawyer who got himself involved in some shady dealings in the past and is now making a huge effort to be a better person and help others do the same. As the story begins we find out that Elliot is having some problems with a stalker. His personal assistant is worried about him and talks him into letting an ex-family member of hers do a security system consult for him. This leads Elliot into meeting Lennox, an ex-Army Ranger who is himself struggling for a new start. He suffers from PTSD and guilt over some things that happened while he was stationed over seas. He's also struggling to put back together his relationship with his teen daughter who he hasn't been close to in years because of his military assignments.

The mystery part was fast paced and super entertaining. I loved how the two men worked together to figure out who the stalker was (as the stalker increased their level of threat). I figured out who the bad guy was before the end but it didn't effect my enjoyment of the story at all.

I liked both Lennox and Elliot a lot. They were both well done characters, and Elliot in particular was unique. I also loved the female side characters. They were all nice, normal women who were smart and funny. There are not enough words to express my happiness that Lennox has an ex-wife who was not a stereotypical shrew of a woman. She was kind to him, she communicated and worked with him in raising their daughter and she acknowledged that his happiness was important.

I would have rated this higher had there been more development of Elliot and Lennox's relationship. In all of the other books I've read from this author the romance has been on the back burner compared to the main plot and that's been ok because they're been running from zombies or hunting down super heroes and villains, etc. This book went along with that same formula which is fine. In fact usually good, but I guess I was just hoping that since this was contemporary we would see more focus on the relationship dynamics. This couple had all the making of a fabulous hurt/comfort story and I really wanted to see that (because that's my favorite trope ever).

So.....this was really good. My minor complaint was on me really, not the author. I would definitely recommend this and I'll be looking forward to more by this author, in this genre or something different.

3.5 stars- Good twists, lacked some depth early on

I’ve enjoyed the romantic suspense series Cari Z co-wrote, so I decided to try one of her solo books. Friendly Fire had a lot of the hallmarks I love- interesting characters, punchy dialogue, fast-paced action scenes, and some hold-your-breath suspenseful moments. Sadly, although I loved a lot about this book, it did take a while for the characters to grow on me and I felt there were some missed opportunities.

Elliot’s past sparked my interest from the get go and as he filled Lennox in on the full story, I was even more intrigued. Similarly, I liked the idea of an ex-military soldier dealing with PTSD while adjusting to civilian life and being a good, reliable father to his daughter. Though both characters had interesting backstories, for much of the book they lacked some depth- both individually and then as a couple. Even the romance felt a bit superficial- the men got together fairly quickly and their relationship seemed more lust-fueled than a budding chemistry. As the story progressed, I could see Elliot and Lennox working as a couple, I just wished it had more time to fully develop. I did really enjoy the intensity of the action scenes in Friendly Fire, as well as the unexpected twists as the story wrapped. Overall, I liked the book and would definitely look for more of this author’s solo projects going forward.

Friendly Fire was narrated by Mr. Russo, who did a great job keeping a smooth rhythm and delivering the scenes with just the right amount of emotion without overacting. I’d certainly recommend this audiobook for fans of romantic suspense looking for an exciting read.

I’m impressed. I’ve been reading, and enjoying, Cari Z’s works for years now, but this was an exponential leap. Tight, solid, gripping, likeable and very readable. There is no way to say this without sounding negative to Cari’s previous books, but I realized about twenty percent in that I’d forgotten who I was reading. There is that much of a change. Maybe it’s the contemporary nature of this work compared to her other fantasy based writing, I’m not sure, but whatever magic happened here I am whole-heartedly recommending this read.

CHARACTERS

Elliot McKenzie

“One of the up-and-comers in the psychospeak community, a self-made, self-help guru of the modern kind.” Elliot is charming, elegant and trying to make a comeback from a long, hard fall from grace.

Lennox West

Staff Sergeant, Army Rangers, Lennox fights his demons both past and present. He’s a wonderful guy trying to do right. He’s not super dad, but he tries. He’s not super boyfriend, but he tries. He may be super lover though. Whew! And when it really matters he’s got it all together.

Additional Characters –

It’s good to see these female characters so well drawn and complete in their own right.

Serena – Friend and personal assistant to Elliot. Love her! Wanna be her.

Lea/Lee – Lennox’s teenage daughter. Great, realistic thirteen year old.

Gaby – The ex. Handled very well, and again, realistically.

STORY

Charmed Life is being called the Facebook for felons. Elliot, its founder, uses his past misdeeds to improve the lives of others through guidance and encouragement. But as his star is once again rising there are those who want to see him fall, again. If he can just keep it together a little longer his life will settle. He can do it. He just can’t ask for help. But he sure needs it.

Luckily, Serena, Elliot’s hip-thrusting assistant introduces Lennox to help create a security system for Elliot. Through a series of action-packed incidents the two become close and involved. Between life and death threats, family gatherings, and a precocious teenager Lennox may just be able to help Elliot reach his golden moment securing the future of his company and possibly their relationship. But first these two have to learn how to forgive themselves and realize that they can’t live for others.

WRITING

Fresh, clean and enticing. I raced through this read because I couldn’t put it down. I found myself drawn forward because Elliot was like an open book, but with hidden chapters. And I’m a sucker for military men, especially those who are caring and dependable. But it was the action scenes that really worked for me. They were done very well. And you could include the sex scenes in that sense of action. They held a nice intensity and good helping of sincerity which grew over time. Plus dirty talk. I’m all for the dirty talk.

So, all in all, this was just something really special for me. The happy-for-now ending left me satisfied but I would certainly read more with these two.

I think I have good record track with Cari Z. -- which was why I asked for the ARC from Riptide/Netgalley for this one. I deliberately didn't re-read the blurb before I started, so I was going in blind. Well, turned out that I really enjoyed it. Most especially because of the suspense/mystery element.

Cari Z. writing is good, I was entertained the whole way through, even if I was guessing where the story would go from the beginning. I think the moment that Lennox and Elliott met, then the threats towards Elliot was escalated, the mystery fan in me was rejoicing. Oh yes, the mystery ... sure, we knew the players and their identity might not be too surprising but I enjoyed how Cari Z. added the slight twist to it. If you like your mystery in romance, this should be in your consideration.

However, if you want to get more straightfoward romance ... I might be slightly tentative to fully recommend it. The thing is, while I thought Elliot and Lennox had the right amount of chemistry, but there was potential of some hurt/comfort elements that never fully materialized. Lennox was suffering from PTSD after the friendly fire that he experienced in Afghanistan. But he never really opened up to Elliot about it. We did have scenes of him talking to therapist, but never exactly with Elliott.

So the emotion that came from them was slightly lacking and I never really certain on how they reached to the point of that lovey-dovey epilogue. Did they ever touch the issue of Lennox's nightmares. Did Lennox finally share that part of his life to Elliot? Because to me that is also important ...

In any case, this was another solid book from Cari Z. for me. Heck, I even enjoyed the sex scenes!! They were not plenty and I thought they were pretty HAWT. Just right amount of sex scenes made me so very happy ^^

I enjoyed this fast-paced low angst suspenseful story. Told from dual POVs it features two different men: Elliot who is skirting the edge between law-abiding citizen and conman and Lennox, bisexual men struggling with PTSD and his purpose in life. There was enough steam and humor to make this an entertaining read for me.

What I liked about Elliot, was how open and honest he was about everything with all people in his life. He never pretended to be better or worse than he was. He was easy-going and genuinely nice man. I liked Lennox's protectiveness and his relationship with his daughter Lee - those two were at times endearingly awkward and so sweet! I loved how insightful and fun Elliot was when it concerned Lee, I think he helped Lennox bridge the gap with his daughter. The best part was that the author let both men get to know each other and let us, the readers, continue their romantic story after the book was done on our own. There were no requisite I love yous just because this was romantic suspense. All we see in the end are two men who feel strongly for each other and are ready to see where it might lead them.

The stalker angle was mildly interesting, maybe slightly predictable here and there, but in the end it managed to surprise me a bit. One character I really disliked was Vanessa, Elliot's sister. She was not on page much, but what I read about how she was with Elliot I didn't care for. I get some of it but what she did in the end was unkind. This was a good 4 stars read for me!

I enjoyed this one and am starting to enjoy Cari Z’s style. Elliot is looking at relaunching his life and career after a heavy fall from grace years earlier- he is focused, determined and passionate about giving people second chances. Realizing he is being harassed by a stalker, he takes this in his stride and is determined to ignore the letters and messages until he is almost killed when his car is hijacked. After meeting Lennox, who is recovering from PTSD, he amps up the security and starts to take the situation more seriously. While the situation heightens, so does their relationship. These two are great together but this book is more about the issue rather than the heat or chemistry... damn I would have loved a few smokin scenes ! I still enjoyed the pace of this book and will keep my eye out for more of her work 😊
