Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Fordham University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and from Boston University in 1971 with a Master of Arts degree in anthropology.

He studied to become a Jesuit priest, but decided he would rather work with children after jobs at orphanages and daycare centers. In 1973, he received a Master of Education in Child Studies from Tufts University. In 1975 he moved to Canada to work at the preschool at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. He also taught in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Guelph as a lecturer and as an assistant professor. In Guelph he was encouraged to publish the many stories he made up for the children he worked with.

Munsch's wife delivered two stillborn babies in 1979 and 1980. Out of the tragedy, he produced one of his best-known books, Love You Forever. This book was listed fourth on the 2001 Publishers Weekly All-Time Best selling Children's Books list for paperbacks at 6,970,000 copies (not including the 1,049,000 hardcover copies). The Munsches have since become adoptive parents of Julie, Andrew and Tyya (see them all in Something Good!)

Munsch has obsessive-compulsive disorder and has also suffered from manic depression. In August 2008, Munsch suffered a stroke that affected his ability to speak in normal sentences. He has recovered enough that he is able to perform live, but has put his writing career on hold until he is fully recovered.

3 étoiles et 3/10 cœurs. J'ai été surpris de voir à quel point j'ai fini par aimer ce lire. C'est une histoire folle et irréelle, mais assez drôle et j'ai dû rire à la fin!

3 stars & 3/10 hearts. I was surprised by how much I ended up liking this. It’s a madcap, unrealistic tale, but quite humorous and I had to chuckle at that surprise ending!

Bedtime book.... hilarious book about a girl that buys a pair of socks that she never wants to take off. She keeps the same socks on for days without washing them. When she passes by a flock of birds they fall from the sky, when she her friends take her to the river and make her wash her socks the fish float from the smell. Very funny!!!

Tina needs socks, but all she will get is a pair of black socks in her town. So, she must go far away across a river to get a funky one. But, her mom refuses to take her, so she cajoles her grandpa to take her by boat. And the fun begins. Long-winded rowing back and forth gets her a pair of socks that she LOVES! She loves it so much that she refuses to take it off; what happens afterwards is hilarious.
We love PBs. We hear you; we don't have to repeat it every time. But did we say that we LOVE silly and humorous PBs more than the others? This book will make you laugh every time you read it. We all know at least one Tina in our life, and we laugh even more when we think of our Tinas. The illustrations are perfect for the story - they make you giggle even more.

Tina wants some new socks so badly. She begs her grandpa to row across the river with her to take her to the big sock store. When she gets there she find a yellow, green, and red pair that she loves so much she vows to never take them off. Tina does just that, she wears them for ten whole days, then another ten days, and then another! By now all the animals around her are dropping when she walks by and the kids at her school are fed up. They all come to her house and carry her straight to the river, they hold her down, take off her socks, and wash them. Tina is so pleased when she sees her clean socks and loves how clean they feel, she says from now on she will always wear clean socks.
I love this book. I think it is so silly and fun and it always makes me laugh. The illustration throughout the book really adds to the story and makes it even more funny, as her socks begin to smell there is a green aroma that begins to follow her everywhere. I would definitely recommend this book.
This book would really just be a funny book to read to a class. There are lots of silly things that happen like all the otters moving into grandpas house. It is also a funny ways to remind you to make sure and wash your socks!

I liked learning that you only wear socks for one day not 10 days

Summary: Tina had been wanting a cool pair of socks from this store across town, so she and her grandpa went shopping for some. She found these really cool striped socks and swore she would never take them off. After 10 days, they began to smell horrible! Kids at school couldn’t stand the smell so they stormed over to her house and forced her to wash them. It was then that Tina realized that her socks are special even if they washed!

Response: I think this story is very silly because it’s really only about socks, but I think kids would love this book. The way Robert uses language in the story keeps the kids interested, and laughing throughout the whole story. And I think kids can feel like they relate to the character because they are their age.

Classroom: I would honestly use this in my classroom to talk about hygiene. I say this because some parents don’t talk about it with their kids and this would be a great avenue to get the conversation started.

Genre: Children's fiction
Ages: K-3rd

A little girl, Tina, wants some new, colorful socks. It is a bit of an ordeal to get them given their location. (There are some great clues in the book to help children figure out where this story takes place. It was a bit of a mystery as it's not a typical setting.) Tina is so enthralled with the socks that she refuses to take them off to have them washed. It's a good hygiene lesson for students but maybe not a great lesson about how to treat your friends. There are some onomatopoeias in the book and it is a good book for making predictions. The story is a bit odd but I think most children will find it funny.

This was a funny story! The joy of a favorite clothing item turned smelly. The journey of a child not wanting to take off the their favorite socks. Some classroom applications, could include sequencing the story's events, a writing prompt about the students' favorite thing, or even mapping the journey it took to get the favorite socks. Some significant word choices included great onomatopoeia examples such as SWISH and BLAM. Great conversations about this fun literary device could encourage students to try incorporating onomatopeia in their writing!

I read this book to both my kids (they are 14 years apart). What I remembered as brilliant and goofy and a great exploration of the unusual challenges of remote life and Canada did not resonate the same way. I feel like the story is based on the stereotype of the dirty Indian. Now, I realize that her friends are pushing her (even throwing her) toward better hygiene, and that it's only Tina with the problem, but however lightly and indirectly, it reinforces a negative image of minority characters.

This is such a cute book! It is about a girl named Tina who is obsessed with getting a good pair of socks. She finally convinces her grandfather to take her to get some, but the problem is she never wants to take them off. She will not let her mother wash them and the kids at school, along with some animals, begin to notice the smell. The kids take her down to the river one day and wash them for her. The story has a really cute ending and elementary students will love the story along with the illustrations.

What a riveting read. This is one book you are destined to finish in one sitting. I simply could not put it down. Not only does it have beautiful illustrations that go along with the incredible writing, it also teaches such a valuable lesson. I will refrain from giving too much away, but I can already tell the message will stick with me for years to come.
If you have not already read this timeless classic, let this act as your sign to open your eyes to real literature.
Robert Munsch never misses.

The girl REALLy loved those socks! She wouldn't take them off so the kids threw her in the river because she was so so stinky. It was sad though because I wouldn't want to be thrown in a river. I wouldn't be able to swim so I would be scared. I was worried that maybe she wouldn't be able to swim... but she did because she is a big girl. The skunk might not be able to swim though... that's not good. Sometimes I like wearing my Paw Patrol shirt lots of times... but mama and papa make me wash it. - Khi 3

This story by Robert Munsch is a silly book that can be used to help teach the importance of good hygiene. Tina is a young girl who refuses to take her socks off because they are her favorite ones. This is related to young kids as they may feel this way about some of their clothing. Tina's socks get so stinky that birds fall out of the sky, and skunks fall over. Munsch does a really good job at incorporating humor. I highly recommend this book to read to young kids.

In my opinion, everyone should read this book. It is funny and has great illustrations. The story and illustrations are hilarious. You will laugh so hard, you will cry. My favorite part is when the students threw her in the river and the fish pretended they were dead because her socks were so smelly. Another reason you should read is that it has funny pictures. For example, Tina wants to row but she go's in circles. I prefer you read this marvelous book than mmm cookies.

Hilarious. Girl gets socks she loves and never wants to take them off. They start smelling so bad, geese fall from the sky. Finally her school friends carry her to the river and was her socks for her. She asks mom for a shirt. Mom asks if she promises to wash it. She says, no, if I wait long enough, my friends will wash it for me.

The most interesting things about this book are the questions the illustrations raise. Where does this family live? What are their daily lives like? Does the grandpa's burl art make him a living? Unfortunately, they go unanswered. The setting of this book is mystifying and enthralling. The story and plot, not so much.

This is another of the author's funny stories, one with a funny surprise ending. Tina wanted new socks, not black ones, but she had to cross the river to get to a store that sold them. Her rowing was entertaining. The fact that she wouldn't take off her new socks led to a stinky situation. Enjoyable story and illustrations.

Tina wanted a new pair of socks and needed to find a way across the river to get them. When they got to the store, she found her favorite pair ever and didn’t want to take them off. This created a stinky smell that her schoolmates took her to the river and cleaned the socks. This can help students learn about how to be clean and take care of their clothes.

Cute book but wasn't crazy about the ending. I felt the character didn't learn the lesson and instead will only take advantage of her friends in the future. Not the best moral to take away. But the rest was cute, witty and fun!
