Odd story about a critter named Serch who spends all its time looking at the ground, "Searching," it says. It misses out on friendships and actually seeing anything until ... until a bird poos on its head. No, really. A swirly brown poo. Serch is an odd-looking thing, but the rest of the critters are cute. Probably has a good message, but I think kids will focus ... on the poo.
🚘Buenas a todas!
Search is always searching, we just don't know what (and he doesn't either). While searching and constantly looking down, he just misses all the beauty and interesting things from the world, but that changes because of a bird! Adorable story to make us think about what we might be missing if we don't look up. ❤
This is an interesting book. I question the intentionality of certain elements, like the author's decision to call Serch "it" when everyone else is gendered (which I don't have a problem with, but like I said, how intentional is this? I can't quite figure it out). Meanwhile, as another reviewer points out, it is too bad that Serch's searching goes on way too long. The repetition CAN work and HAS worked in other children's books, but this just goes on and on! Towards the end, when Serch looks up, I feel like the book is trying to send the message to "take time to notice what is around you" or "take time to smell the roses" you know, without saying it in a cliched sort of way. However, I feel like this will just go right over young readers' heads. I'm trying to find some purpose in this story, in the book itself, but there doesn't seem to be much intentionality besides detailed illustrations. YES the illustrations are great. The detail is great. The thick pages are great. But the story is just lacking a bit.
My newborn LOVED looking at this book. I was surprised she was so captivated by the pages. The illustrations are cute, odd, and colorful. As the character Serch finally looks up off the floor, he is joyous to see so much --- his friends, shops, the sky, etc.. I think my daughter was mesmerized by the pages with so many fun things to look at.
PreK-2. Very strange search-and-find book. A monster says he's searching for something, but all he does is look at his feet until a bird poops on his head and he looks up. Then the reader looks for all the things search sees.
