Kill Crime (Crime/Thriller/Mystery/Suspense)
From the author, Mike Slavin:

I wrote the rough draft to Kill Crime in sixty days and edited it for two years. It is about as good as I could get it. When I got stuck, I wrote an action scene to keep me moving, and then blended it into the story.

I am the author, but Goodreads allows me to review my own book.

Synopsis:
Normal everyday people are tired of waiting for justice. They are killing murders and getting away with it, thanks to a controversial, international best-selling how-to book, Kill Crime. It is a book in the book.

The book comes out about the time Jeff Case, a self-made millionaire, suffers great tragedy with murders start happening all around him.

He becomes frustrated with the police when leads run out, and he is forced to grapple with the moral decision about ultimate justice. Revenge killing is something he's had to wrestle with before on the battlefield. A decorated combat veteran, he has the skills to hunt and kill, but he can't do it alone. He turns to private investigator Trish Teal and handpicks friends who have certain valuable talents.

Case and his team go on the hunt for the killers and for justice that takes them on a frantic chase from Houston and throughout Texas to Reno and Vegas, where they run into professional killers that want him dead.

They must take on the dark side of human nature and come out alive on the other side.

What you as a reader get:

Action: I always defaulted to action.

Emotions: I try to make you laugh in some places and I try to make you cry in others. I want you to feel the story. I did.

Surprises and Twists: I want to surprise the reader as much as I can. It’s fun.

Realism: I tried very hard to make the story as real as possible. I interviewed cops, military people who served in combat, used car salesmen, private investigators, and anyone who could add realism to my story. I even made sure I had some female editors to make sure I represented the female voice accurately.

This book is the best I could do. No editorial mistakes (I hope). As cleanly written as I could with multiple edits and proofs.

I held nothing back.

Also, there is also a FREE short story prequel, Life-Changing Money, to the Kill Crime/Jeff Case series at www.mikeslavinauthor.com. Please leave me a review on Goodreads and Amazon if you read it and like it.

Primed to Kill, Kill Crime 2 is available on Amazon:

Jeff Case tries to survive and save others as he runs into a pack of serial killers. Lots of action, twists and turns.

Wrong Kill, Kill Crime 3 will soon be available.

Thank you,
Have a great day,

An action-packed page turner. Jeff Case, former Green Beret, loses his wife and infant in a botched robbery. A book called ‘Kill Crime’ is published about the same time, putting forth the theory that ordinary citizens can and should kill criminals whom the justice system has failed to punish. The rest is headlong mayhem and action as Case pursues the killers of his family.
The story follows the basic structure of Death Wish by Brian Garfield, but Case is no Paul Benjamin. Case is armed, capable, and motivated. It’s like Mitch Rapp, of Vince Flynn’s novels, decided to clean up Houston instead of working on the Middle East. Or Jack Reacher. This novel compares well with Lee Child’s first Reacher novel, The Killing Floor and Vince Flynn’s debut, Term Limits (which was a stand-alone with similar, motivated, dangerous men imposing their will on bad guys.)

In true fashion, Mr. Slavin brings another thriller that opens up the underbelly of the crime world and shows us the brutal side, but this time there is a fix. A solution. In Kill Crime, Case is introduced to a book that talks of all the crimes gone unpunished, how the law fails, and encourages the everyday citizen to take matters into their own hands.
An instant controversy, the book sky rockets into best seller status, and Case has to question the wisdom and morals behind the advice.
Until the day he is faced with the choice himself.
An unspeakable crime, a personal blow, and the cops have no leads, though they are not shy in voicing suspicion of him. Case realizes the only way justice can be served is if he takes on the burden himself.
With a fast pace and plenty of action, we are propelled through his journey of vengeance, justice, and self preservation.
Enemies seem to be on all side s as he hunts for killers and attempts to keep himself out of the cop's spotlight.
the scenes are crisp, invigorating, and engaging. I was sucked in from the first page, fell in love with our hero, and rooted him on through every harrowing step.
This one will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I received this book as an ARC copy and absolutely loved it from start to finish, even though I am not usually the thriller novel type but this one I really got into. Mike Slavin is a great writer and brings you right into the story and makes you feel as though you are walking along with Jeff Case following his life and what transpires. It is an amazing book and I hung on every word from beginning to end. It's wonderful characters and fast pace makes for an excellent read. Like all Crime drama anythings (novels or shows) it makes you think and that is the fun of it. Reading this book was like watching a good crime show, and I can't wait for the next episode.

Sometime ago I set out to blog about books to help out deserving indie authors. I always hoped to find one who could challenge and hold his own against the powerful legions of traditionally published writers. Mike Slavin is it. “Kill Crime” might just be the novel series to successfully compete in the fiction universe against the well organized, powerful machinery of traditional publishing houses.

(Spoiler Alert) Someone writes a book recounting instances in which folks have taken justice into their own hands to redress wrongs and to get payback for crimes the authorities are either unwilling or unable to resolve. Jeff Case is a former Green Beret turned oilman whose wife and infant child perish at the hands of criminal scum. Soon thereafter they kill his police Lieutenant best friend at Case’s front door. Buffeted by the cruel hand of destiny, who better than him to avenge his loved ones…and to perhaps secretly write praising vigilantism? It makes sense. So believes an investigative reporter who is after the phantom writer whose front man is summarily executed for someone else’s literary sin.

Slavin displays a superb talent for developing plots, subplots and characters. As a former Army infantry officer from West Point, he also has the credentials to capture and portray his story’s military superhero; except Jeff Case protagonist is no superhero. He has faults and self doubts. Destiny has dealt him a lousy hand. And, at moments, he fails; creating a personage with whom the readers can relate.

I can only describe Slavin’s writing style as 100 mph suspense. He captures the reader from the get go: “As he waited, Jeff Case rubbed the scar over his right eye—a lifetime reminder. Over a birthday cake.” From those two first sentences the reader is his. He will not let go of his public’s imagination until they close the book, exhausted but exceedingly thankful they gave up sleep to follow the story. That’s what I’m talking about. This is the kind of writing the indie universe was waiting for.

So, you said you wanted to be entertained? Go buy “Kill Crime.” You’ll be glad you did.

Probably the best Five Stars I will give out this year.”

The story immediately propels the reader into a robust drama already in progress. This is exhilarating and sets the tone for the entire book. The reader knows right away that this is not going to be a book to yawn through, but rather a story that will snatch them by the collar and yank them into the action. It is a thriller in the best sense of the word.

This is a captivating mystery/thriller. The author provides enough clues to keep you invested, but not so many to bore you. It is gritty without being vulgar and dark without blinding the soul. What a masterful balance!

I heartily recommend this book!

I was able to get an advanced copy of Kill Crime before it was released. I had read Life-Changing Money and really enjoyed the writing style and development of characters by Mike Slavin. So I agreed to read his new book Kill Crime in advance. I am sure glad I did! It was a non-stop read as I finished it in one day. I could not put it down. Jeff Case is a great character and you can really feel yourself being part of his world. The book made me sad at one point as well as giddy with the outcome from that moment. I can't wait to read more from Mike Slavin especially if he keeps Jeff Case in my world!

A major new talent, an impressive new book!

Texas author Mike Slavin’s biographical information could well be the foundation for a novel! A West Point graduate (and a Troy State University graduate in Management), US Army veteran, self-made businessman who started his own company (Oil & Gas Exploration Company) and became a millionaire, author (as Michael L.F. Slavin) of how-to books on becoming a millionaire, and now caring for his Parkinson’s challenged wife while writing crime thrillers – just start reading this Jeff Case opening of a series and there we are! Mike lives in Houston.

The zest of Mike’s exceptionally fine thriller novel is suggested on his website where he describes his important new character: ‘Former Green Beret and two-war veteran, Jeff Case is now rich and has it all. But people he loved were murdered in a robbery and he vowed revenge when the police couldn’t catch the killers. More murders, more complications, and the revenge list kept growing.’ For all those who love reading tension-ridden thrillers, KILL CRIME is a must read.

From the top, first chapter, through to the end, this is a riveting reading experience, and meeting Jeff Case is memorable: ‘Case was six feet tall, which was fine with him. He also kept himself in the kind of shape he felt was appropriate for a former Green Beret. He was always clean-shaven and kept his dark brown hair cut short. Case’s ocean-blue eyes, while memorable, were not as remarkable as the two-inch scar over his right eye. People looked at it either directly or sheepishly. Some asked what it was from. Others wanted to ask, but didn’t. For Case, that scar was forever a reminder tat could trigger deep emotions. It stared back at him every day when he shaved. Few people knew the whole story.’ And with that well-sculpted figure, Mike magnetizes our attention.

Providing a quick glance at the promised journey, the provided outline works well: ‘Normal, everyday people are tired of waiting for justice. They're killing murderers and getting away with it, thanks to a controversial, best-selling how-to book. Case, intrigued with the book and its mysteries, becomes the hunted after witnessing the author's murder. Case is also hit with tragedy on more than one front, and some friends and family are murdered. He becomes frustrated with the police when leads run out, and he's forced to grapple with the moral decision about ultimate justice. Revenge killing is something he's had to wrestle with before, on the battlefield. A West Point graduate and decorated combat veteran, he has the skills to hunt and kill, but he can't do it alone. He turns to private investigator Trish Teal and hand-picks friends who have certain valuable talents. Case and the team he builds go on the hunt for the killers and for justice that takes them on a frantic chase from Houston and throughout Texas to Reno and Vegas. They must take on the dark side of the oil industry and gambling, and come out alive on the other side.’ Just scintillating!

Warning: don’t plan on reading this novel in pieces, a chapter at a time: once started, Mike’s well written novel has you captured. Mike Slavin joins the ranks with the very best crime/thriller novelists of the day. This book invites cinematic adaptation. Very highly recommended.

This will be one of those books that you think about often, long after you've read it. In many aspects, the pages (as is kin to the genre) contain a gritty and borderline hardboiled crime drama that catches your eye both by its readability and (in the first few pages) the characters' relatability... But when the book picks up a fervent pace and keeps running, near- breathlessly sprinting until the climax? Kill Crime will leave you not only satisfied, but wanting to read much more of the adventures of Jeff Case.

This is a very 'intelligent' crime thriller. The plot is laid out well and the story is interwoven in a face-paced, thrilling way. Jeff Case is the type of protagonist you root for, and I'm glad there were a few questions left unanswered for the next book in the series :)

It flowed in a beautiful way

I read somewhere that he wrote this book in sixty days and edited it for two. I'm writing a book of my own which I'm at a crossroads on. It flows out but five year olds make it hard. I hope mine flows as well as this.
It's absolutely gripping. It took me a mere six hours to get through it and I've since purchased another of his. Books like this will give aspiring writers a push. It can be done. Laurie Gelman once told me that the joy is in the rewrites. Seems like the writer got a lot of joy in his rewrites because it reads like it is a work of art that he wanted to give his readers an adventure they would never forget.
This book has a great ending that leaves the door open for a sequel but also, closure enough to mourn the loss of new friends you made.
A well rounded adventure.

Kept readers captivated. Kill Crime was the first book I read by this author. The plot was fast-paced and intriguing. The main character was well-developed while the reader becomes engrossed in the character’s world. This author wrote a well-written book with a very satisfying ending, which I enjoy, yet he does well to set the stage for future books. When I write a review, I do not reiterate a description of the book. I believe I am here to tell you whether you should read this book and why. I believe this book would attract readers over many genres, but especially if you are a fan of the vigilante-justice, crime thriller genre. I also think this is an author to watch as he is exceptionally talented. You should ABSOLUTELY read this book!

A great suspense story, and one I could relate to. I like suspense stories and this flowed like most that I have read making me enjoy it more. Would I make the same decisions as Jeff Case? It took me time to get started and once I had the time to read it, I couldn't wait to finish it. The characters were intriguing and I now want to read his earlier books to better see how the characters have grown. The writing style kept me interested and it was nice to read a story from a fellow veteran. I look forward to reading more future adventures!

This is a great crime thriller. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates this genre. The main character, Jeff Case is smart and likable and I’m interested to see what he does in his next book. The story is well told and keeps you in suspense right up to the very end. There are plenty of twists and turns and I especially loved the attention to detail that the author used to describe things related to private investigation. Kill Crime will put you through a whole lot of emotions but in the end you’ll be left feeling satisfied in the time you spent reading it.

Wow. This book was suggested to me, and as a lover of mysteries and whodunits, I thought it might be an intriguing read to try. Since it was also offered on Kindle Unlimited, I decided to give it a read for the weekend. It's fast-paced, has exceptional detail, and is well thought out. I couldn't put it down! I had to find out what was going to happen next.

From the very first chapter, we learn that Jeff Case has already met with some sadness in his life. After serving a few tours in Afghanistan, he has built up his oil business and married his high-school sweetheart. Down the road, he and his wife have a baby. Life seems great. Good job, decent living, and loyal friends. Then, everything turns upside down, and Case loses in more ways than one.

The next thing you know, he's in the midst of murder and mayhem. Now, he has to make decisions about what's right or wrong, and how those answers will result in actions. The foreshadowing, details, action, adventure, authentic characters, and realistic questions keeps this story moving along. There is no stopping it! I couldn't put it down, and I loved the change of characters, constant action, and surprises. I HAD to know what was going to happen next and if the killers would be caught!

The story takes some twists and turns and has an unexpected ending. I'm excited for book two and ready to add it to my "to-read" list on Goodreads. I'm really glad I listened to my friend and picked this book up.

The reason its a 4/5 and not a 5/5 is based on some personal preferences within the book, including some language choices (while authentic and realistic made me cringe), and the whole morality issue in the actual plot. It brought up a thought-provoking question, and I can see how the character made his choices, but it still gave me pause. I do look forward to the next book, and I encourage anyone who loves mysteries, crime, whodunnits, the balance of justice, and the ethics of right and wrong being challenged to give it a read!

Wow! Surprises Everywhere!

I sort of expected a police procedural. Not sure why. That is not what this book is. This book is probably like nothing you have read. I don’t want to give spoilers, but I want to give you a feel for the book. It had the same feel as the short story he wrote ahead of this book.

The hero, Jeff Case, is a combat veteran of two wars, but left the army with his fill of killing. When the book starts, he has been out of the military for four years and has been fortunate to hit it rich in the oil business. He also plans to meet the author of the International best seller, Kill Crime (a book in the book). This book advocates vigilante justice and tells the reader how to get away with it.

Tragedy hits Case full force, and when the police are ineffective, he must use his combat skills to seek justice. He doesn’t do it alone, and not by choice he assembles a team of like-minded friends. Case must seek justice and avoid getting killed.

The story takes place in Houston, Texas countryside, Las Vegas, and Reno. The story rips through the oil business, the drug trade, assignations, murder, and conspiracies. I appreciate the author’s description of characters and settings.

There were more than a few real surprises in the book, I just did not see coming. Although the book is full of action, it does pause to let you catch up. A few times I must admit I actually choked up a little.

Not only was this book just a great face paced, hold your attention tale, but it brings up moral issues and possibilities that will keep you thinking after you have put the book down and take a deep breath.

Open to the first page of this book and you are introduced to a real-life Batman; minus the Batarang. Jeff Case does drive a sweet ride, has seemingly unlimited funds, and employs invaluable assistants to aid him in each facet of his life.

Vigilantism may not be widely accepted in the real world, but we are surrounded by villians allowed to roam free because of loopholes hidden within our legal system. How will the victims receive the justice they deserve? Can Joe Public be of help?

Author Mr. Robert Guess addresses this problem in his book Kill Crime. The cases collected for this controversial book has drawn the attention of both victim and villain. It has also drawn those equally frustrated with the legal system.

Beneath it all, this story isn’t so much about good versus evil but establishing the line between Citizen Cop and Vigilante. Is it ok to turn a blind eye if you know the right channels will only lead to a brick wall? Who gets to decide how far one can go before returning back from the feined ignorance? And then what do you do when the media catches wind of these activities?

I thoroughly enjoyed tagging along with Jeff as he contemplated many of these questions. Nothing for him was simply black or white. I began wondering what I would do if faced with the same. Hopefully, I won’t have to do more than just wonder.

I look forward to learning what will happen in the next chapter of Jeff Case’s life.

I have to say that I am not normally a big fan of this genre, but agreed to read an ARC copy of this book because Mike is a friend and I have happily reviewed his excellent work before. I'm not a fast reader, but I got pulled into the story of Jeff Case in the first few pages and finished the read in two days! Mike Slavin is an excellent writer. I love the way he developed his characters, his plot twists, and the way he surfaced current issues through the actions of his protagonist. As I began to reflect on the series of tragic losses that surrounded Case, I thought it might be a bit over the top, but then I read the daily news from several sources and sadly concluded that all this loss and drama could, in fact, happen to a single family. It's far too believable these days, and that grounding in believability only adds to the appeal of the book and its promised sequels. His eye for detail is exacting, and frankly, quite educational about many areas of police matters, drugs and crime that I was happily ignorant about. As other reviewers have stated, many pieces of this story will stay with you long after you have finished reading the book. I can't wait until Mike publishes the next in the series; he might have made me a convert to the genre of crime thrillers. This is a solid five star read! Well done, Mike, now get back to work and get the follow-on published!

After reading the short story Life-Changing Money by this author I was drawn in enough that when offered an advanced copy of Kill-Crime, I jumped at it.

From the very start, you know he has it in him. He will get his revenge. A West Point graduate, green beret, two tours in Afghanistan…he’s been trained for it. Now a successful oil entrepreneur, Jeff Case, goes on the hunt after suffering a tragic loss. Must he become a vigilante to get the justice the police seem unable to provide? There is a lot going on in this story and it will take you on a surprising journey. From the Texas oil patch to Reno and Las Vegas and with a little help from his “friends”, Case seeks to unravel the events that will bring him to question his purpose in life. He is torn by his sense of right and wrong but can’t stop himself from going beyond the boundaries.

This book has plenty of action and keeps you riveted. The main character, Jeff Case, is your typical hard-nosed crime/detective lead but with a sensitive side. In the end, it leaves you eager for the next installment by Mr. Slavin.

This is a solid first in a series book. It does a wonderful job of setting up what kind of man Jeff Case is and what to expect of him in future books. Jeff's losses are so tragic that and you really feel for the character which makes what he does to find justice acceptable. The author really has two stories unfolding here, the one revolving around the murder of Jeff's wife and infant son, and the other, a seemingly random event where Jeff witnesses the murder of the author who wrote Kill Crime.

Gritty crime stories aren't my usual choice when it comes to choosing a book, I much prefer a straight-up mystery. But Kill Crime is a good read. The dialogue is believable and the book well-structured. I particularly liked the author's use of flashbacks. They were brief and to the point. The book's pacing was brisk without rushing the action. And the main character had an emotional depth that allowed the reader to sympathize with his struggle.

All and all, I would highly recommend this book.

Very fast-paced thriller

The story of Jeff Case starts developing rapidly from the very beginning of the book, with him catching the pedophile that had abused his niece, after which he becomes a vigilante. He builds his own “justice league”, a team to help him fight against crime. His background in the military helps him stay composed and on top of his game while investigating several murders in the US. The book deals with real issues the country has been facing, such as slow police investigations which give criminals the possibility of, literally, getting away with murder.

I liked the imperfection of the main character. He hunts for demons while battling his own demons. His character is well-defined, three-dimensional, and very realistically portrayed. The author managed to make the story flow seamlessly, but didn’t forget to put in the plot twists that are so needed when putting together a crime thriller. This book manages to stand out from the thousands of books in the genre because of its unique concept.

Author, Mike Slavin provides us a gem with his new book, “Kill Crime” by giving readers an action-packed thriller coupled with enough love and affection to attract all readers across all genres. From the opening of chapter 1, he’s created a story line in this book that is bound to have readers feeling and thinking like Jeff (lead character) and Becky Case, just like it snagged me. He does an outstanding job of character development making you feel like you really know his subjects down to the minute details, turning this page turner into a book I couldn’t put down. I was duly impressed with the way each chapter builds on the previous via high-level suspense and deep drama and tugs at every emotion the reader brings to the table which is what most readers yearn for. I highly recommend that you order and read Slavin’s new work today as we’ll probably be seeing it on the big screen, one day. He won’t disappoint you!

One of the best books that I have recently read, Kill Crime is the perfect choice whether you want a well written or an interesting literary work. As odd as it may seem, there are times when how a book is written is more important than what it is about.

However, this is not the case of Mike Slavin who offers the reader a life-changing plot, beautifully wrapped in meaningful words. His work even seems to be interlaced with some metafictional elements.

The protagonist in Kill Crime is both a hero and a simple, imperfect man exposed to overwhelming pain and doubt. The literary craftsmanship of the author reveals the proper amount of thoughts and feelings, leaving the avid reader to complete the image of each character, a fact that maintains the suspense.

Eager to find out who is the author of Kill Crime and how is Jeff going to evolve as a character, I am looking forward to the release of the sequel Primed to Kill.

Kill Crime was a riveting story of suspense. Every chapter left me wanting more. The characterisation was phenomenal and the flow of the story line was perfect. It felt as if I was watching the story like a movie. The characters were described in such a way you really felt connected with them. The ending was shocking and left me wanting to read the next installment right away! I give Kill Crime by Mike Slavin 5 stars. This man is a genius with words I would recommend his work to anyone wanting a good suspenseful read with lots of excitement. Mike is right up there with famous authors like Nora Roberts and James Patterson! Mike has for sure become a staple author in my reading list and I for sure plan on reading more of his work!

I received an ARC of Kill Crime for an honest review.

Oh My God, It was a thrilling story. You easily fall into the story. Tons of action, and an equal amount of emotions. Jeff Case has love and money then his world is turned upside down. He faces tremendous moral decisions and makes you feel them too. The author, Mike Slavin, has a comfortable writing style that makes you feel the story. He has many great characters with interesting scenes.

In Kill Crime, you get action from oil wells in Texas to the casinos of Vegas. You get murder, justice, revenge, and a twist at every corner.

I really liked this book. Strongly recommend.

This book had me from the beginning. Our hero, Jeff Case, took me on a wild ride both emotionally and geographically. There were moments that were heartbreaking and yet moments that were so funny I had to go back and reread them because I knew something big had happened. Mike Slavin has a way of weaving a story together involving many people, many motives, and many locations in way that I will think of them for days after I have read them. And yet, thankfully, there are unanswered questions and situations still to be resolved by the end of the book so that I can look forward to reading the next book in the series. I have more hours to spend with Jeff Case and that is a very good thing.
