Durant l'hiver 1862, la Venise, indépendante et souveraine, n'est plus qu'un lointain souvenir. La ville est sous domination autrichienne, petite parcelle de l'Empire sur lequel règne l'empereur François-Joseph et une femme entrée dans la légende, dite
"Sissi". Et lorsqu'un de ses conseillers est retrouvé mort en compagnie d'une prostituée, à bord d'un bateau reliant Trieste à Venise, une tempête s'annonce sur la lagune… Le commissaire Alvise Tron, héritier désargenté d'une des plus anciennes familles de l'aristocratie vénitienne, se voit retirer l'enquête qu'il vient de commencer par les autorités militaires et reçoit l'ordre d'oublier jusqu'à l'existence de ce double meurtre. C'est mal connaître cet incorrigible rêveur qui a sa propre conception du devoir, surtout lorsque l'impératrice en personne lui demande de retrouver le coupable, coûte que coûte.

Well. It's a bit frustrating now that the search on Goodreads for the exact book cover of the book we've just read is so limited - I have read this novel in its French translation, titled "L'impératrice lève le masque" (referring the the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, who plays a major role in the plot), and not in its original German form - but it doesn't seem to be available on this site. Anyway. This being said, it's a pity that this novel (and therefore, I imagine, the other titles written by Remin) are not available in English, for I'm pretty sure that a lot of fans of historical mysteries in this country would enjoy it a great deal. Taking place in the most magical of all places, Venice (and I did read it in Venice), very well written (better than most mysteries), and entertaining in a clever way, here's a perfect read for a winter holiday in the magnficent Lion City. Remin's main character is a detective who also happens to be the son of a great venetian family, at the time when Venice was under Austrian rules. This trick allows us to follow our hero through all the different strata of venetian society, from dirty shacks to splendid palaces. The author obviously knows his venetian history (as well the city itself) extremely well, and he assuredly takes us on a ride that feels as authentic as it is deliciously evocative and romantic. The convoluted story is graced by style, and if the conclusion does not necessarily come as a surprise, the whole book contains enough pleasures to be savored till the end.

3 1/2 étoiles. La fin est un peu bâclée, il y a une ou deux fautes de grammaire, mais dans l’ensemble, j’ai bien aimé. Et j’ai bien l’intention de lire le deuxième tome.

Gute Unterhaltung! Ich hatte erwartet, dass es flacher ist und obwohl es teilweise sehr klischeehaft ist, war das Buch ein guter Zeitvertreib. Ich denke sogar, dass ich den nächsten Teil auch lesen werde. Ich kann es auf jeden Fall für sonnige Urlaubstage oder die langen Feiertage empfehlen, wenn man sich mit nicht besonders schwerer Lektüre die Zeit verkürzen möchte.

Sasvim prosječan roman s nekoliko propusta. Na primjer glavni lik čija je uloga u potpunosti pozitivna, u pocetku izaziva dojam da ce biti negativan lik jer se agresivno ponese prema psu. Također, alati koje koristi Carica ne podudaraju se s razinom njezine moći. Itd.

La fin un peu surjoué, avec un personnage qui se retrouve en plus que piteux état, et avec une demande en mariage à la conte de fée. Mais j'ai aimé.

Die Kriminalgeschichte ist schlüssig erzählt, reißt aber sicher niemanden vom Hocker. Lesenswert ist der Roman aber weil er nicht – wie eine Vielzahl von Venediggeschichten – entweder zur Zeit des Mittelalters oder Renaissance oder in der Gegenwart spielt, sondern im 19. Jahrhundert während der österreichischen Machtstellung in Österreich. Und so kann dann niemand Geringeres als Kaiserin Elisabeth als handelnde Person auftreten. Bedauerlich ist dann aber, dass der Vorgesetzte des Commissarios Tron auf ähnliche Art schrullig ist wie der Vorgesetzte von Commissario Brunetti in den Donna Leon-Romanen. Auch hier hätte Remin origineller sein dürfen.
