Into The Dark

'Afterdark'
is our fourth offering to the local independent comic scene, a follow-up to our previous 'Battle' comic compilation and a few mini comic compilations.

As comic artists and creative workers, the four of us are very familiar with nighttime -- The Silence, the alternatingly disquieting and comforting darkness, and of course -- the things that creeps and lurks in its corners. Hence our little of Afterdarks'. Naturally, most of the time spent working on this book takes place at night, with deadlines being scarier than any horror stories we could have concocted.

So check the lock on your doors, sit tight, and make sure that there's really no one behind you, and we hope you enjoy reading about the things that creeps and lurks in the darkness of our heads.

Stay Safe!

This is the second book of Archfriends' comic compilation that I've read (the other ones are Battle and Delicious). Actually I never meant to buy this book. But when I did the pre-order, one of the comic artists sent this to me by mistake. Out of curiosity, I just read the comic book and decided that I had to buy this one. Haha.

This comic compilation consists of four stories:

1.) Puppet Shadows by Rama Indra

As the starter of the compilation, this dark tale will choke us with fear. Set in a dystopian world, two scavengers (a man and a girl) were strolling around the dead city, looking for food and water supplies. The rain fell, they had to took shelter under a ruined building. The man wanted to take a look around, despite the girl's protest.

Suddenly they found an old giant robot which started to work once they came closer to it. The robot apparently was the performer type which present them a big puppet shadow show depicting of how men started never ending wars which probably the cause behind the dystopian world. However, then the girl found the creepy truth behind the puppets, when everything was too late.

I don't quite understand about the message of this story. But indeed this is really horrifying.

2.) Neighbors by Azisa Noor

A school girl was told by her mother to "be good to your neighbors". The girl was wondering why her mother said so, although they, in fact, living in a remote house and had no neighbors at all. Slowly but sure, the girl then realized that the neighbors in question were actually from another dimension...

Drawn in quiet and poetic tones, this comic teaches us about the importance of keeping the balance of the nature. Those neighbors from the other dimension were creepy but they wouldn't disturb and hurt us as long as we didn't annoy them. Quite deep.

3.) Salvation by Marwan Islami

In this comic, Marwan Islami again featured a steampunk fighter girl through a hard-boiled adventure. Her partner here was no longer the giant robot she usually joined with in the previous comic compilations. This time she was with a taller and slimmer robot.

Together they came to a dead city due to a letter sent by the city dwellers, asking for help. They went into a ruined house destroyed by some peculiar roots. They met a girl who was actually attached to the living roots, together with many other dead humans.

Just like the Puppet Shadow story, I don't really get the message behind this story. But I wonder if this implies about the plants are taking revenge on human???

4.) An Encounter by Archie The Redcat

This is the most hilarious story of four. The most normal. And the easiest to understand. A college girl was having a night course with her friends when suddenly she felt an urge to pee. Her friends tried to scare her by saying that the toilet of their campus was infamous for its haunted atmosphere... which she shook it off.

However, then she met a mysterious and suspicious long-black haired woman who combed her hairs in silent in front of the basin. Who was the girl? Is she a ghost? The ending would shock you to bursting laughter. Choosing this comic as the closing part is a wise decision.

I hope I could collect all of their compilations. And I hope they will be willing to sell them all at tokopedia, including the old issues. Sigh...
