Dragon Conversion Camp

Rate this book
Sam was always raised to believe dragons were evil, but when adolescence struck and he found out he was one, he quickly had to come to terms with his identity and hide the secret from his evangelical parents. Eventually he was discovered, however, and was forced into a dragon conversion camp where psychics and proselytizers swear that draconity can be prayed away. Can Sam and his new friends survive the camp's ordeals, or will one of the many disasters pressing down upon him sweep him into oblivion?

There were some really interesting pieces of information in this book regarding the world surrounding the story. Dragons and magic in a world that seems fairly similar to our own. Unfortunately these were barely explored at all.

I knew going into this book that the story took inspiration from gay conversion camps - it's all there in the title after all. I was hoping that it would offer a new, fresh take on the idea, that it would be mixed up a little given the introduction of dragons. This was not the case. All it had to offer were the same old tired arguments that are still brought up against LGBT+ people. Only this time they were dragons.

The villains of the story felt like they were missing a moustache to dastardly twirl at times. Are there people in the real world who are that evil? Yes. Do they make good characters in fiction? Rarely. Without nuance to them, they just come across as one dimensional. I know I was meant to be scared of Roy. I was just bored of him by his second appearance.

There are some really interesting stories set in the world this author has come up with. Sadly this was not one of them.
