Not because I didn't want to finish, but because it had to go back to the library. :'( I so sad! I was amazing though, so I can't wait to re-check it out and finish it!!!
Having read one of the books about Peter Marshall’s sermons at a very well-known Protestant interdenominational church in Washington, DC in the early 1960’s, I wanted to understand Marshall and his oral skills.
Marshall was well known in Protestant churches across DC and much of the east coast for his engaging and powerful sermons. What made him different from many ministers different from current pastors who have weaved wealth and success into Christianity. He had an ability to link Biblical people and stories to everyday life, including the everyday people Jesus engaged.
The sermons picked for the book have a message fit for today. That’s because they were sermons that focused on humans and our call to deal with all people. Unfortunately, he died very suddenly in the early 1960’s. He would have had much to say about everyday relgious life and expectations for those who try to follow Christ’s words.
Catherine Marshall, his wife, is listed as an editor and an “introducer” to the book. It’s clear that she was much more than that. She is listed only as an editor and introducer to the sermons. Had he lived, his sermons would have shown how the Bible shows the role of women. of the role of women in the church and in the gathering of people of faith.
Now, almost 50 years later, her work has given us a way to understand our faith in a difficult and frayed stance.
This is a collection of sermon's assembled after the author's death. It is one of several books his widow was able to edit from his writings. The print style is a poetic style, published as it had been written.
