John Robert Wooden is a retired American basketball coach. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player (class of 1961) and as a coach (class of 1973). He was the first person ever enshrined in both categories; only Lenny Wilkens and Bill Sharman have since been so honored. His 10 NCAA National Championships in a 12 year period while at UCLA are unmatched by any other college basketball coach.

We are all seeking truth and fulfillment. The beauty is that even atheists have this need. Coach Wooden found it through the inspired word of God. God was the source of all the success he ever received . Very inspirational.

First half of the book is very good and empowering. The second half doesn't say anything bad, but it meddles with topics that, from a theological point of view, clash and need revision. All-around a good read.

John Wooden
Fiction

One-on-One: John Wooden was the University of California Los Angeles men's basketball coach from 1948-1975. During his career he won 10 NCAA championships, had 4 undefeated seasons, and won 88 consecutive games. John Wooden had many successes in his career, but he was known for more than just being a basketball coach.

John Wooden: This book was based on a coach and his fantastic career. He was known for being one of the best coaches who every lived, but he had a much different style of coaching. He just wanted to teach young men to be the best they could be, on and off the court. My personal favorite quote was "love is the greatest word in our language. When we have love, many of our problems disappear". This is my favorite quote in the book because it tells me as long as I have love, the problems I have currently aren't as bad as they seem.

The book's point of view is on John Wooden, a coach who knew winning wasn't everything, it is what you learned, win or lose. He just wanted to show young men how to better themselves in life, he made his team always have their shirts tucked in, make sure to say thank you to the person who assisted you (usually in a point), and always thank the refs and coaches after a game. These were rules only to make his team better, and it helps them to better them in life.

I loved this book, it taught be many new things that can help me improve my life, they way I think, they way I act etc. I wish that everyone in the world could read book like this more often, I think I would make the world a better place.

The book was a perfect way to try to better yourself in life, on and off the basketball court, weather you play basketball or not, it is a book that can help you up when you are down. I would recommend this book to all athletes, not just basketball, but to all the sports.

Coach Wooden
This book is inspirational and gives an insight on how to build good character. It talks about Coach Wooden’s basketball career and reflects and life lessons he has had. This book caused me to be more open minded about basketball and the way others around me handle situations. Coach John Wooden wrote this book to teach people how to handle tough storms life throws at you and how you should never give up. He explains to you that you can’t go through life trying to complete hard obstacles on your own, but with God first in your life, you can achieve anything. My favorite quote that John Wooden says is, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” In this book, there are two different people speaking. A former Laker, Jay Carty, and then himself, both give their opinion on how weather the storm. I love how Coach Wooden is always trying to make every situation positive. He really is an encouraging man, and a good teacher. His wife died when he was in his fifty’s, and he handled it at peace. Never did he curse God or ask, “why me?” Instead he was blessed that his wife didn’t experience any more pain, but got to peacefully be with the Lord. Wooden also taught his players how to have a clean mouth. He wouldn’t tolerate anyone speaking foul language. I’m sure it was tough for many of his players, but if wanted to play ball for Coach Wooden that was just something you had to fix real quick. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a passion for basketball, and wants to be unstoppable on and off the court.

Excellent wisdom from Coach Wooden on coaching that applies to all aspects of life. Scriptural references accompany each passage, as well as Jay Carty's thoughts on the subject. I wasn't as keen on Carty's commentary, but Wooden's is no-nonsense, full of grace and conviction, and was very thought-provoking. Too bad more coaches don't adopt his outlook on life.

This was a good spiritual book to read. John would write some of his thoughts and most of them were about walking with the Lord and doing the right thing. Then the other author would write about his spiritual experiences . It is a good devotional book. I saw a side of John Wooden I didn't know about.

Coach Wooden was ahead of his time. His principles in all his books still have a big impact today. Just ask any of his players. I coach basketball and if I could have one tenth the impact that he had on his kids I will be a succesfull person.

Awesome devotional for those who want God's best for their lives. The only downfall is that it quotes The Message too many times so you have to scribe in the verses yourself every page.

I love reading anything about coach Wooden. His pyramid of success has a life-long impact on me. Coach Wooden coin his definition of success: "Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."

This is a book perfectly designed for easy read in a quiet moment. Very conversational, and very inspiring.
