Once upon a time, there was a family of women who lived in the forest . . . The forest is the only home Sylvie has ever known, ever since her mother found her as an infant beneath an oak tree. She knows that she should be content with her simple life, but she can't help wonder what the world outside has to offer. So when a group of strangers find their way into the forest, Sylvie is entranced. A chance encounter brings her face to face with a boy named Peter Glass, and Sylvie finds herself questioning everything she thought she knew. Her mother and grandmother have always tried to protect her—but what could be so terrible about grape soda and boys with laughter like starlight? But as her curiosity and her friendship with Peter Glass grow, Sylvie also begins to learn of the dangers that the world can hold. And it isn't long before her family—and the entire forest—learn as well.
What Happens in the Forest is about a family that has lived cut off from modern society in the woods famous for fairies and mystery. They are some form of “other”, not fae but also not quite human either. Sylvie learns much about the outside world as she falls in love with a boy from the nearby town, but fate has too much grief in store for this small family to come out on top.
Wow. This story has you loving every character, from ditsy young Anna to curious Sylvie to feral oldest sister Rowan and both their grandmother and mother as well. It’s so full of wonder, whimsy, and love. The endings have you hurting alongside the characters, and it all wraps up in a way you never see coming. Loved this read.
Kennedy knows how to use imagery to make the story reign supreme. The story is extremely vibrant and pulls you in from the first page, explaining smells "cigar smoke and peppermint", feelings "tiny spiders hatching and skittering across my skin", and sights, "damp sights on dark blue denim" all on the first page. In the book, there is despair, love, anger, frustration, happiness, family, folklore, and a mix of past and present. The characters will make you want to keep reading as you learn more about them, finding out intriguing facts that aren't present from page one; that aren't just straight out and told. Another great Kennedy Cannon book!
