Someone mentioned this espionage thriller had a central gay storyline so I was all over it and I wasn't disappointed. Also, given I'm a big fan of Nordic crime fiction, I figured I'd groove on the atmosphere alone, and I most certainly did. (That said, a fair amount of the story actually takes place in Beirut.) Turns out this is the third in a trilogy, but I didn't realize that until I was more than a third of the way in, and it only became a very minor issue in spots here and there. The story of Jacob and Yassim, two lovers who meet in Beirut and become entangled in a terrifying international conspiracy, is a standalone tale that occupies more than half of the book and it kept the pages flying by. Joakim Zander's prose style is razor sharp, perfect for thrillers. Brisk, present-tense sentences and tightly coiled dialogue. Overall, a great read, and as I note often in my other reviews, I'm always eager to celebrate something genre that's this well written and focuses this much on complex, well-rendered gay characters. The translation felt effortless to me.

I didn't know what to expect in Joakim Zander's novel "The Friend" but he really blew me away with this book. I've read "The Swimmer" I thought that was good but this book has so much more. This has everything you could imagine in an espionage book. A gay man trying to become a diplomat from the ground up going from Sweden to Lebanon. A Syrian gay man who is trying to find a solution to save people from terrorists and thought of as a terrorist. Two women lawyers who were thought of as terrorists and one of them found a man who was switching jobs from Brussels Belgium to Sweden and was interested in him before. We have two groups of Intelligence groups both from Sweden, going two different ways. We have the Russians involved disrupting everybody. Now mix everyone together and make them all interact with each other, have a few twists and turns. Now you have the book to read that will make James Bond look simple. I would definitely give my recommendation to read this book.

Ostin kyseisen kirjan dekkari-intoilija isälleni joululahjaksi vuosi sitten.

This book has so much and so little going for it at the same time.

To start, it’s clear the author is incredibly intelligent. Sentence structure is great, points are clear and the book is detailed without babbling. That’s where the good ends. It took until 100 pages in to actually get interesting. I promised myself I would abandon at 50% through if it still didn’t grab me, and I regret not doing that. The story is pretty boring, and I 100% blame the unlikable character Jacob. Dude is an absolute moron. He’s constantly told not to do something, does it, then doesn’t understand why there would be consequences. He’s too vapid and obsessed with himself and being in a tier above everyone else. Kudos to the author for staying consistent with him, and giving so much detail you hate him more and more as you go through.

Overall, a smartly written novel, but a storyline flop.

Zander blijft imponeren. Een aanrader. De reeks wel best in volgorde lezen!

Habibi, why isn't anyone talking about this book?

THE FRIEND is an amazing political thriller following Gabriella Seichelmann's arrest under the accusations of terrorism and the mysterious identity of Yassim, a photographer thought to be an ISIS terrorist.

It's difficult to talk about this book without giving spoilers, but I will try my best.

Needless to say, I LOVED THIS! While Klara's investigation was less interesting than Jacob's adventures in Beirut, the two connected nicely after 300 pages. Ok, I may be biased. Perhaps the only reason why I loved Jacob's perspective more was because of his relationship with Yassim. Love is a powerful force, mates. I'm quite sure that's not entirely the case. Jacob was, by far, more interesting than Klara, he was also experiencing different things that what he was used to back in Sweden. Might've been the damsel in distress, but his story arc was exactly what I needed.

We follow a romantic subplot for both perspectives. For Jacob, it's Yassim, his charming character, his sweet words and mysterious persona. For Klara, is the arrogant, self-centred George, who works in Brussels and is, undeniably, hot. Luckily, the ending was exactly the way it should've been, putting facts and logic higher than feelings and expectations. Joakim Zander used the romance for conflict, not for driving the plot forward and shadowing the thrill ride.

This was a well-written and thought thriller. The characters' motivations were on-point and the way their relationships were written made me root for them.

I don't care if I figure out the twist in a novel as long as it makes sense. I didn't care in this one either. I had one hypothesis about Yassim from before starting the book and it ended up being correct. I'm so glad Joakim Zander went that way! THIS BOOK DESERVES MORE!

Also, the politics, chases and underworld investigations...🤙🏻 So good!

Habibi, prepare yourself for a thrill ride across multiple countries and two continents, for blackmail, cat-mouse chases, betrayal, love, interceptions, revenge, hard feelings and politics.

'The Friend', Joachim Zander's 3rd thriller, should've been right up my alley: exotic locations (check), spies (check), bad guys (check), a little sex (check), lots of gray areas in the plot (check). Alas, it's done in by wooden writing (translated from Swedish), a very dimwitted protagonist, and decisions made by major characters that seem very unrealistic. It's still a decent read but could have been much better.

The plot is one we've seen many times, but there's a twist. A young Swedish diplomat (actually, an intern) is sent to Beirut to work at the embassy there. He's clueless both socially and professionally and soon finds himself in trouble. His Middle Eastern lover, whom he met shortly after his arrival, has duped him into making a bad decision to smuggle documents back to Europe. Is it information to support a new terror attack, which is what the Swedish intelligence service, who quickly latched on to him, thinks? Or is it just photographs for legal action against a government who is murdering civilians by drone? Oh yeah, his lover is a man, making this gay relationship double risky due to its negative status in the Middle East. That's the twist.

The remainder of the book is full of self-reflection (always a crucial part of any Scandinavian novel, apparently) on the part of the young diplomat (is my lover a spy? a terrorist? are these documents for good or bad? why doesn't he call?), other parties becoming involved in either hunting or protecting the young man, strange Eastern European guys following various characters, spy agencies and police inserting themselves into the action, and so on. The young diplomat, perhaps blinded by his love for his guy, makes one stunning bad decision after another. The conclusion is laughably contrived.

The Friend takes on a pretty complicated scenario involving terrorism and the fluid nature of Russian involvement in European politics, and for that it deserves kudos. However, the way it does so seems to be a bit lost in the translation.

well... this was a disappointment.

i didn’t have huge hopes for this book because i’d never heard anything about it and it was only £2 in the works.
however, the chemistry between yassim and jacob built up my expectations in the first half of the book.

SAYING THAT there were so many elements in this book i didn’t like.
- jacob having sex with a minor?
- the unnecessary scenes?
- how often they solved problems with sex.
- the writing style kinda? didn’t really gel with it.

there was definitely clear chemistry and tension between yassim and jacob and apart from klara and george- who i only came to like in the last half - was probably the only aspect of the book i actually liked.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Okay, I'm officially over the Klara Walldéen books. This one is overly dramatic spy ware set in the Middle East (this time with the gays!), and while it is an okay novel - not least because the author writes about what he knows and incidentally knows how to write - I have no interest in reading more of it.

Beirutiin sijoittuva poliittinen dekkari, nyt on asiallinen meininki, ajattelin, enkä hyvin paljoa erehtynytkään. Sopivasti sain tämän Ystävän loppuun ystävänpäivänä, vaikka en sellaiseen loogisuuteen pyrkinytkään.

Opiskelija Jacob Seger lähtee Uppsalasta Beirutiin diplomatiaharjoitteluun.

Klassinen dekkareiden pihtiote, sellainen Ystävällä on, cliffhangeritkin kohdillaan.

Silloin on kirjailija onnistunut tehtävässään.

(Ystävä sopii muuten mainiosti maailmankuvassaan ja tapahtumissaan kaikkien aikojen suosikkisarjani Le Bureaun kirjakaveriksi. Sarja on nähtävillä SkyShowtimella.)

Had to DNF this stinker at 22% into it.

Slow dull start with fake mysterious stuff hinting of something ominous but nothing of interest actually ever happens.

Bad cursing.

Annoying time jumps between two different stories. No idea how those could ever meet later to be useful. Like two different novels intermixed.

Parts of it were confusing.
Couple of vague pronouns also used so no idea who is being talked about.

Waaay too much queer sex for an alleged mystery novel. Seems more like x-rated porn.

Characters not interesting. They also do irrational things making it unbelievable.
Really some ambassador gives the queer intern his limo and a pile of money on day 1 they meet so he can go do queer things in some bath house located in a bad part of Beirut? Would any real ambassador even knows the name of a temporary intern who just arrived?

Got this at the dollar store from the remainder table for a buck.
Would have been overpriced for a quarter.

The MC is a college age intern with sky high aspirations like so many boomers so how this could be the ending of a trilogy is the only mystery of interest here. What could he have done in two previous books?

Now after looking at other reviews I see that the MC was NOT the true MC but it was one of the minor side characters in the other part of the slow build up who was in the two previous books. Who writes a book with a support character starting out like the MC with all the emphasis put on them and doing the more important things?

This book was translated from Swedish which was not a problem except for one or two places where it seemed like a different English word would have fit better. The real problem is that Swedish novels all seem to be long dull and pretentious nothingburgers.

For a supposed thriller it was a snoozer of a start that made me DNF. And the queer porn also helped that decision.

This one just came out this summer. Zander is a new author to me! Have you read any of his books yet? I think this one sounds a lot like a Mission Impossible adventure, which I love! His first two novels The Swimmer and The Believer both sound excellent…I love finding new authors! .

Here is the synopsis for The Friend, “Jacob Seger arrives in Lebanon eager to make the most of his internship at the Swedish embassy in Beirut. But when he meets the mysterious Yassim at a glamorous party, he is swept up into a passionate, obsessive affair. When terrorist claims against Yassim are brought to light, Jacob must confront his role in a complicated game he is wholly unprepared to play. Unsure who to believe or trust, he knows only that he must flee Beirut—and fast. .

Meanwhile in Sweden Klara Walldeen returns to the Stockholm to bury her grandfather, her best friend Gabriella by her side. What should be a trip of mourning and solitude quickly turns perilous, however, when Gabi is arrested under suspicion of terrorist activity. After finding notes in Gabi’s purse about a clandestine meeting with a young Swedish diplomat, Klara springs into action, determined to clear her friend’s name. .

Following Gabi’s trail, Klara comes face-to-face with Jacob, as well as with George Loow, a suave lobbyist from her past to whom she finds herself inexorably drawn. Now Klara, George, and Jacob set off on a race across Europe to stop a pending terrorist attack—and get to the bottom of Yassim’s true identity. .

THE FRIEND, by Joakim Zander, follow two narratives. First is about Jacob Seger, an young and excited new intern at the Swedish embassy in Beirut who wants to make an impact on the world. The second is Klara Walldeen, who recently lost her dear grandfather and returns to Stockholm with her best friend, Gabi, to mourn his death. Both Jacob and Klara quickly become wrapped up in a global conspiracy involving feuding countries, international spying, and looming terrorist attacks.
Zander begins the book by getting to know Jacob and Klara, with loads of backstory and well-defined supporting characters. While the beginning of the book take a while to get moving, there is a certain point where the reader sees where the story is going and why we are following these two characters in particular. As any good spy thriller does, there are mysteries and truths that most of the major character's are carrying and Zander strategically doles out those secrets in a pleasing way. There are shocking reveals, character betrayals, and the stakes are constantly building. The climax feels right out of an action movie where at any moment everything could fall apart.
A little slow to start, THE FRIEND builds and builds to an exciting conclusion the keep the reader engaged until the very end. A definite read for anyone who enjoys spy thrillers and novels full of international intrigue.
I received a copy of this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

Review: The Friend by Joakim Zander.

Another Early Reviewer’s book filled with suspense and deception. The story was well written, creative characters and an environment of turmoil. The setting is Lebanon where Jacob Seger, an International student wants to take his internship in the Swedish Embassy in Beirut. The reader is also introduced to Klara Walldeen whose grandfather has died and she returns with her friend Gabi to Stockholm to mourn his demise.

As the story unfolds into two sub-plots the action begins with Gabi’s disappearance after being arrested by a SWAT team under suspicion of terrorist activity. Klara saw the whole event go down in front of Gabi’s law firm but at the time she didn’t know what was really going on but she is clear about what she has to do. This is where Klara gets involved with a Swedish diplomat to save her friend.

Meanwhile, on Jacob’s first night in Lebanon he goes to a party and meets Yassim, known as a photographer covering his true colors as a terrorist and passionately falls in love. After a few secretive meetings together Jacob heard rumors about Yassim being a terrorist. His thoughts keep telling him not to believe anyone but he already had some questions about their relationship and not sure what his future held for him. Soon Jacob has an impossible decision to make challenging his position in a complicated game he was totally unprepared to play…

In time Jacob and Klara meet and become wrapped up in a global conspiracy involving feuding countries, international spying and looming terrorist attacks.

I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book.

This is the third installment of this trilogy. I had read Zander's THE SWIMMER but not THE BELIEVER. This did not deter me from getting completely immersed in this thrilling novel. There were references to events that occurred in the second book, which I will now read. There are two plotlines, which are related in alternating chapters. Jacob Seger is a young Swede assigned to work in Beirut for the foreign service. He is eager to advance in his career and leave his past behind. Gabriella and Klara are old friends. The story begins with the two women grieving over the loss of Klara's grandfather. This is a fast-paced story that I could not put down, bringing me into the intriguing word of international terrorism. I look forward to reading THE BELIEVER to round out this trilogy.

Jacob is just starting his internship in the Swedish Embassy in Beirut when he falls in love with Yassim. Concurrently, Klara is reunited with Gabi for her grandfather's funeral only to have Gabi disappear again when she is suddenly arrested by SWAT outside her law firm. The Friend is action packed as Klara and Jacob's story lines soon intertwine.

Straight out of a Jason Borne movie, Zander captures the world of international diplomacy and espionage. At times there were traces of missing story line from book 1 & 2 of the series, but the characters and quick paced plot easily kept the reader entertained.

Having read The Swimmer and The Believer, the first two books in this trilogy, I was excited to have The Friends in my hands. My overall impression is that this is a good book with a nice plot and a continuation of some of the interesting characters from the first two books. It, however, seems not as well written as the first two. Perhaps that is due to the translator, although it appears that the same translator worked on all three books. There is also some holes in the plot that I never figured out.
Nevertheless, I recommend this book on the basis that it is the final in the trilogy. Each book can be read as a standalone, but it is nice to have the continuing background information on the characters. And I consider Zander a fine writer and hope he has more in store for us.

📖 The Friend by Joakim Zander 💥💥💥💥

A tense and intriguing book for history fiction lovers! Thou I would not call it fiction. Over the decades lasting wars in Middle East, all could be truth: falling in love with an enemy, changing sides, being victim of spy traps and at the end still believing in a good happy end.

This author invites a reader into the not so far past journey through #Sweden and #lebanon. Books like this remind us about the humanity behind the worst atrocities and keep us alert to the tragic experiences of all fighting sides.

This is a thrilling spy, suspense novel. A friend? A lover? A terrorist? That is what Jacob is trying to find out about a man named Yassim. He just met him but felt an instant connection even though he had some misgivings. A friend of Karla's is arrested by the police with a SWAT team. She has to determine why? The journey for the truth connects Jacob and Karla and puts them both in fear for their lives. A very well written and hard-to-put-down novel. I would recommend it.

Turns out to be a better story than I first thought it would. Jacob/Matti is one of the weakest characters I have ever read in a book. His survival is a big part of the story and makes the book quite exceptional even though he's not really that likeable. Klara and George's story is endearing. I do like this author and will read the book written between this one and "The Swimmer", which was excellent.
