5★ A delightfully reassuring story about a little boy who worries that Daddy’s old green car might conk out again as it did this morning, and Daddy won’t make it back to school to pick him up!
Whatever will Daddy do? Will Matthew be stranded alone?
We’ve already noticed the neighbour’s red tractor, and sure enough, Daddy says he’s he can borrow that. Next thing you know, we see Daddy bouncing along happily down the road.
“’And if the big red tractor is busy on the farm?’ says Matthew.
‘Then, says Daddy, 'I will whistle to Martin, the lazy teddy bear who sleeps under your covers. He will gather me in his big paws and carry me to you.’”
And we see an enormous, smiling polar bear galloping along wearing a bright yellow blanket with Daddy precariously perched on top.
And so it goes, from birds to bunnies to a handsome green dragon until finally, Daddy reckons “I will run as fast as my two long legs will carry me. And in no time I’ll be by your side.”
And in no time at all, we do see Daddy carrying Matthew into their home, where afternoon tea is waiting with all the helpers from Daddy’s story.
[A picture of the last two pages: Daddy and Matthew’s kitchen and all the animals]
Cute pictures and a story that children will love to hear over and over and memorise and reassure themselves that no matter what, they won’t be left stranded or forgotten or misplaced!
Lovely idea, colourfully executed!
My excerpts are from the NetGalley preview copy, so it’s possible some wording may have changed in the final version, but they can’t spoil this one – it’s cute!
Matthew must go to kindergarten but when daddy’s old green car sputters and struggles he worries that daddy won’t make it back to him by the end of the day. Thus starts a what if game that ultimately reassures Matthew he can safely go to kindergarten.
I have the opportunity to read this book with the target audience, my nephew. We both quite loved the fantastical drawings in this book. I loved the bright poppy colors that will appeal to the youngest of children. My nephew loved that the black birds appeared in each spread and that all sorts of fantastical methods were used to get to Matthew. His favorite by far was the dragon which is what he chose to draw (he chooses an illustration from each book we read and draws his own interpretation).
“I will call the big green dragon who blows into the heater all winter. And in two flaps of his wings and three big leaps, I will be next to you!”
I obviously didn’t read the complete blurb stating that this is about separation anxiety and so I found it really fun to get to the reason why daddy was being so outrageous. It was so fun and infectious that my nephew and I totally enjoyed ourselves even without the undertone point of the story in the forefront of our brains. I really liked the end illustrations especially where it portrayed home as a safe place where Matthew will return to after a day at kindergarten.
Having worked with children the age of preschoolers this would be great for teachers having to deal with separation anxiety and once that is past would be great to revisit anytime as a way to develop creativity and imagination in the child. Very versatile and worth the investment in home or school!
BOTTOM LINE: Fun way to reassure your children they can trust you to return...
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A sweet story about a father's whimsical imaginings on how he will pick up his son from school if the old green car doesn't start. The tale is greatly enhanced by Aurélie Guillerey's retro art.
RATINGS: 4 STARS (I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY) (Review Not on Blog)
I like this cute story! The illustrations are great. This book would have been perfect for 5 year old me. I was terrified that I would never be picked up from school so I made my mom sit there - and I would make sure she was still there every five minutes. Matthew has thoughts about what if his dad's car breaks down, how will he come pick him up. Great for the little ones starting school!
This is a cute book that shows children that demonstrates the promise that "Daddy will always come back". When Daddy and Matthew climb into the green car to go to school, it sputters and fumes. It finally starts up and off they go. When Daddy leaves he promises Matthew that he will be back to pick him up at the end of the day. Matthew is worried and asks, "What if, this afternoon, the old green car doesn't start?" This sets off a fun question/response between Matthew and Daddy. Matthew keeps asking, "what if", and daddy comes up with funny ways he will come to collect Mathew from school. Each "what if" gets sillier than the last one. It's a nice idea and the underlying message is calm, dependable and reassuring.
The illustrations fit this book perfectly and elicited a lot of conversation between my grandson and I. With dragons, a big red tractor, rabbits in sweaters and more the book maintained interest while assuring the reader that Daddy will not leave him at the end of the day. The discussion could definitely continue after the book was finished using the imagination of the reader and child with more what ifs. A nice book for families where children are starting a new experience and need that reassurance that no matter what, Daddy or even Mommy will be there at the end of the day. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
I read for my 5 year-old tonight. This book is great because daddy have so many ways to travel to pick up his son from school in case his car broke down. All the ways that daddy comes up with are clever and entertaining. My kid loves it. Definitely a re-read bedtime story for many nights to come. I switched the main character with my kid's name and he didn't even complain. He likes it! We also love the illustrations!
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read & review. My opinions are honest.
Daddy Long Legs is an entertaining story for little ones. What will happen if the car won't start? How will daddy pick up Matthew after school? This is a great kindergarten read. The tale keeps little ones attention and is easy to follow. Daddy Long Legs is translated from its French source. Thank you, Mmes Brun-Cosme and Guillerey. I won this through goodreads.
Not to be mistaken for another children's classic novel with same title, this colorful picture book "Daddy Long Legs" was written by Nadine Brun-Cosme and illustrated by Aurelie Guillerey. From the opening page, it’s clear we’re in for a quirky ride: Matthew’s dad, a lanky chap with dots for eyes, a pink carrot nose and a drainpipe suit, leans, puzzled, over his old green “hiccuping” car. The pair eventually make it to nursery, but “What if the car doesn’t start again?” worries Matt. There’s always the neighbour’s big red tractor, says Dad, beginning to list increasingly absurd ways he could employ to pick up his son. What if the tractor’s tired? Well, says Dad, a man whose patience seems as never-ending as his limbs, he could catch a ride with Matt’s old ted, some rabbits or even a dragon. And if all else fails – we see Dad hurdling hills and trees – “my legs will never be too tired to come and get you”.
Author Nadine Brun-Cosme's endearing picture book offers warm comfort to young children that their parent can always be counted on. With gentle and imaginative humor, the father's increasingly wilder ideas about how he will make his way to his son prove the steady and unwavering certainty of a parent's commitment to a child. The whimsical artwork by Aurélie Guillerey plays lightly with the father's flights of fancy, keeping the tone of the book just right for a storytime read-aloud. Filled with the love between the boy and his father, this is a perfect book choice to address separation issues common to kindergartners and preschoolers who have difficulty saying goodbye to their parents.
There are not many bookstores in the Algarve, and those that exist have a limited English section. So I tend to read children’s picture books in Portuguese. While shopping this morning a bright yellow cover grabbed my attention. Papa das Pernas Longas (Daddy Long Legs). Yellow always works well. Here is my review in English.
When Matthew’s father’s car has trouble starting, Matthew thinks they may never get to kindergarten. Worse still, what if they get there but the car won’t work in the afternoon? How will his father pick him up? Matthew is so worried that his father won’t be able to fetch him that he keeps asking him questions to reassure himself. The patient father’s answers get more and more imaginative until Matthew is satisfied. One thing is clear, nothing will stop Matthew’s father from fetching his son. The quaint illustrations depict the father’s rich imagination and the fresh colour palette enhances the positive mood of the story. A comforting father and son story suitable for any young child with separation anxiety. I loved it.

A young boy wonders what will happen if his father's old green truck doesn't start when it's time to be picked up from kindergarten. In reply, the father lists the many different ways he can come for the boy, including driving his neighbor's big red tractor or being carried by all of the birds in the nearby trees.
This book, translated from the French version, addresses a common concern among many children who are just starting school. Because it is aimed at kindergarteners but is not necessarily a new-to-school story, its audience may be limited, but it's a cute tale nonetheless.
Daddy Long Legs Nadine Brun-Cosme Audrelie Guillerey Imagination takes over a father when in the morning their car is having trouble starting to go to school. His son asks him what would happen at pick up time if the car does not work. He comes up with the big red tractor, the stuffed animal on the son’s bed, or the birds in the trees.Eventually he thinks he would use his own two long legs to fetch his son to reassure him that he will get to his school. Repetition and colorful illustrations that have classic feel to them, will make this a wonderful read aloud to those kids who are anxious about who will pick them up from school. The story could also lend itself for more possibilities to be picked up at school and be great for the beginning of the school year. Pre Kindergarten through 1st grade Written AD+
A child’s separation anxiety is dealt with sensitively and humorously in this delightful picture book. The illustrations are lively and gorgeous and capture the father’s imaginative and creative attempts to allay his son’s fears. While full of humour and colour this book also gives teachers and students the opportunity to discuss the very real fears that particularly small children have about feeling left behind. The Dad here manages to have a plan B, C and D to reassure his son that he will not be forgotten and he will be collected from nursery school. It can also provide an opportunity for children to talk about the strategies they could use if they find themselves separated.
An anxious child wonders how his dad will pick him up from daycare if the car breaks down. The dad comes up with one imaginative solution after another, but the child has many questions. This book is sweet and shows just how much the dad loves his child. This would make for very good bonding time with dad.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
The book was about a little girl whose dad goes to work in an old truck that doesn’t quite work well. So the little girl is worried about how her dad will make it back home. Her dad does not want to worry her so he tells her various ways of how he will get home.
I really enjoyed reading this book, the story had repetition which is good for kids. The book also was told in a very creative way. And what I liked about the book the most was how the readers had to use their imagination.
Cute picture book with characterful illustrations and a reassuring message for children when they are seperated from their parents. Dad promises that he will be back to pick up his child, even if he has to harness dragons or hijack a spaceship to do it. This would be the perfect book to read before going to nursery or school for the first time. It is sure to comfort a nervous child, even while making them giggle.
If you have a child who is apprehensive about not being picked up after being taken to school, this is the book for you. Daddy Long Legs will do whatever it takes for him to get him to return the child home. An extra to do when rereading the book is to count the birds illustrated on each page for math practice too. I received a book for review from Goodreads.
daddy love - what a dad will do to get to his kid. about a parent's love, and it is refreshing to hear it from a daddy's point of view. there are lots of mommy loving a kid books out there. very imaginative, dragons, rabbits, tractors, bears, birds, cars... lots to work with in here for a potential storytime book as well.
In this book, a daddy drops his son off at school after having a little car trouble on the way. The boy is worried the car won't work for daddy at pick up time. Daddy, creatively, tells his son the many ways he can get to school for pick up. I love the story, but the illustrations are just OK.
Adorable picture book about a father reassuring his child that he will be back to pick him up from kindergarten no matter what obstacles may lay in his path. Both pictures and words make this an engaging read.
I love the look of this retro style book. When Matthew sees Daddy having trouble starting his old green car he worries about how he will be able to pick him up from school. With a wondrous imagination Dad describes all the fantastical ways he can get him home.
A beautiful story of the true love of a father for his kids. Cleverly written. The illustrations are unique and tasteful. I love this book! I can't wait to read it to an audience to see their reactions.
an incredibly sweet and imaginative father graces these pages, fun and silly answers at the ready for his son's questions about how he's going to come pick him up from kindergarten. dynamic and stylish illustrations.
this is a beautiful book. I enjoy reading because of the humor and life lesson. It's great book and you can learn to appreciate all that you have including your family, friends, challenges and the true value of work and effort, so in the end of the day you can feel grateful for all these things
A little boy is taken to kindergarten by his daddy, but they had trouble getting the car started at first. The little boy worries that his daddy won't be able to come back for him if the car won't start. They talk about the many ways to get there.
This is the type of book where you end up with like a rube Goldberg type of chain of events. In this case they were hypothetical. It was an enjoyable book and the illustrations were done in a really fun style.
(Library returns shelf is the only place to browse!) Trying to remember which book I've read that has done this before. It's going to hit me at 3am. (That Escape episode of Bluey springs to mind, though it's inverted - hmmm).
