Another excellent book in this series. Kay Hunter is a great character as is her husband, the vet, who is always bringing home some animal to care for. This time it is a gerbil which is better than another occasion when it was a snake - which escaped.

Kay has a good reliable team working for her so the book was all about the case and the police work required to solve it. A mummified corpse falling out of a ceiling sets the action going - was it a murder, an accident or a cover up. And how on earth did he get in the cavity in the first place. The ending came with a twist which surprised me.

I always expect a good book from this author and so far have always got one. Highly recommended.

The unexpected finding of a mummified body by staff in the renovated building had Detective Kay Hunter and her team scrambling for answers. The body wasn’t easily identified and the search for evidence restricted. But Kay’s dogged determination, along with that of her partner Detective Ian Barnes, had their investigation heading in several different directions at once. And what they discovered sent a chill down Kay’s spine.

Was the “softly, softly” approach the best way to go? Alerting their suspects to the interest the police had in them would be dangerous. But justice was necessary for a murder victim who no longer had a say in the matter. Would this be a murder Kay Hunter was unable to solve?

Bridge to Burn is the 7th in the Detective Kay Hunter series by Aussie author Rachel Amphlett, and another gripping, intense ride that captivated me from start to finish. Set in England, the bitter cold jumped off the pages; while the characters are well written and the story easy to read. An excellent thriller which I highly recommend.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Kay Hunter and her team have got a really tricky case this time. A mummified body is found in a ceiling cavity of a recently renovated building.

It was an interesting mystery with no obvious direction for the detectives to start with. So it took a long time for them to get any traction with this case. The story, however, just wasn't as compelling as the previous six in the series. It was a bit light on drama. Good but not up to the usual standard.

Bridge to Burn is book seven in the Detective Kay Hunter series by Rachel Amphlett. Detective Inspector Kay Hunter and her team caught the case of a mummified body that was found in the ceiling of a renovated building. The investigation caused Detective Kay Hunter and his team to go on a merry-go-round to find the identity of the corpus and the murder. During the investigation, Detective Inspector Kay Hunter had to handle a personal situation that changed her relationship with her family. The readers of Bridge to Burn will follow Detective Kay Hunter's investigation to discover what happened.

Bridge to Burn is an excellent addition to this fantastic series. I am pleased that I have returned to reading books in this series. I enjoy Rachel Amphelett's writing style and how she portrays her characters. The book is well-written and researched. I also like Rachel Amphelett's description of the settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the plot.

Readers of Bridge to Burn will learn about corporate corruption and how it affects everyone in the community. They will also understand how difficult it is for law enforcement to get a new promotion and lead a team that knows he has a detective constable.

I recommend this book.

Whenever a Kay Hunter book lands on my Kindle, I get quite excited because I just know I’ll be in for a treat. Bridge to Burn is no different. By now, getting to hang out with Kay Hunter almost feels like meeting up with a friend for coffee and cake, asking them how their week went. Almost, because Kay’s job obviously leads to topics that aren’t exactly fun conversations to be had over something as delicious as cake.

Case in point, this time around Kay and her team find themselves in the middle of a complex investigation when a mummified body is found in the ceiling of an office building. As you do. Who is this person? How did they get there? Was it an accident, a dare gone wrong or were they killed? So many questions!

And just like that we’re off on a journey through corruption, lies and a criminal or two. This intricate plot didn’t at all go where I thought it would go and it kept me guessing until the end. Sure, I had a long list of suspects but I couldn’t spot a motive anywhere which led to much frustration and endless mutterings. Every time it felt like the team was making progress, something would happen that put them right back at square one. As events unfold, you feel as if you’re right there with them, trying to figure it all out.

With each new Kay Hunter instalment, my expectations are high and Rachel Amphlett manages to deliver every single time. This series is rock solid, has been from the very beginning. Kay and her team make for fantastic characters and I love how Rachel Amphlett continues to combine Kay’s job and her personal life effortlessly. Because isn’t that how things are? Sometimes you take the job home with you, sometimes you take home to work with you. It makes it all so much more realistic and believable.

If you haven’t yet gotten to know Kay, please do so. This is truly a fantastic series which keeps going from strength to strength and I can’t wait to hang out with Kay again soon!

I've read all the books in this series, and this one was the least engaging for me. I didn't find the case all that compelling, at least not until the end, I was genuinely shocked by the killer reveal. The suspects didn't seem all that different from one another, so the questioning scenes tended to blend together.

Kay's personal life gets a bit more of the spotlight, but it felt like that part of the story was just getting started and then it ended abruptly. Kay's partner Adam is usually a small part of the stories (and I love that his veterinary work adds some humor), but after seven books I feel like there should be more depth to their relationship.

Another excellent instalment in this series!!
Rachel Amphlett does an excellent job of taking the reader on an investigation trip, giving it a front seat and exposing the findings as they happen. And the best part is that the final, the culprit is always a surprising one that we didn't see it coming.

The body of a person is discovered in a ceiling. First work needs to be done to identify it, then to confirm his identity and lastly to see why he ended up up there.

A great read!! Throughly enjoyed it!

Another solid read in the DI Kay Hunter series. Can't say enough good about these books, they are a must read.

4.5 stars 2 thumbs up!

From the blurb: When a mummified body is found in a renovated building, the gruesome discovery leads Detective Kay Hunter and her team into a complex murder investigation.

The subsequent police inquiry exposes corruption, lies and organised crime within the tight-knit community – and Kay’s determination to seek justice for the young murder victim could ruin the reputations of men who will do anything to protect their business interests.

But as Kay closes in on the killer, tragedy strikes closer to home in an event that will send a shockwave through her personal life and make her question everything she values.

Can Kay keep her private and professional life under control while she tries to unravel one of the strangest murder cases of her career?

Hi, guys.

It’s been a while. But I am right here with several new reviews in the next few days. The summer heat is on, but my vacation is over (sad face). This time I have a review for Detective Kay Hunter #7, and it is my second one in the series. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t read all the previous ones, because this book can perfectly stand alone.

Let me tell you something about the plot. An old building is been renovated and there is a body found in one of the walls. But the body of a young man isn’t there for a very long time, someone put him there recently. The authopsy shows signs of electric shock, so someone has been torturing this man. Detective Kay Hunter and her team are leading the investigation for the identity of the murdered man and his killer. During the investigation, the team has to deal with urban mafia and lots of lies and secrets from everyone involved in the renovating of that old building.

In the meantime, Kay’s personal life isn’t exactly amazing. She deals with her personal loss and her family connections aren’t the best. But I like her partner and his vet humor.

What I think for the book? It is more of a mystery than a crime-thriller. There isn’t too much drama, and there is very little blood. It is a light murder story that kept me till the last page. I read it on the beach, in one day. And no, I didn’t predict the ending. That’s a good sign. I want to know more about Kay, so I’ll read some other books from the series. I felt sorry for her, her loss and all the things that happened in her family. She is a good detective, she does her best. But the case she dealed with was little bit too light for me. Comparing to Scared to Death, I was expecting more twists and turn-overs.

And Kay Hunter is back!

It feels so good to re-visit old friends every once in a while. With the seventh addition to the Kay Hunter series, we find a mummified body fall from the ceiling of a renovated building. As Kay and her team starts to solve the case, things gets messier with men involving corruption and organised crime and doing anything to protect themselves and their businesses. Bridge to Burn was a bit different Kay Hunter book for me. The case and solving it with all the twists and turns it had to offer was all present, but what got my attention more was Kay as a human being. She too feels pain and loss and has a hard time keep her professional and personal lives apart. But thanks to supportive partner and team, she is able to cope to some extent. But then, at the end, it’s all upto her, how she handles the situation. She is walking on a very thin line of being human and becoming cold hearted because of what she has to face on a daily basis, both personally and professionally. How she acts in the future will be a major determinant of how she’ll evolve as a human and a detective. The only point where I felt that the book could have a greater impact on me was with the case at hand – would have loved to be surprised beyond belief. But that doesn’t discredit the effort put into this book. Kay Hunter will always be a part of my life.

This case was a bit more drawing room than the usual action packed murder mystery. What I liked was how well Amphlett disguises the means, motives and more than meets the eye mystery making this a tough one for Kay and Co to solve. Clever, clever.

Really just love how these stories unfold. You are taken on a journey with the rest of the characters. They don’t know what they will find out. You find out, as they find out, you build the bigger picture as they build the picture. Just great to find a book where you engage your brain while enjoying the story.

It nice to see that Kay is not perfect. To see her have issues makes her more human. To see her teaching and being a great leader, just adds a really nice touch as well. Any of the stories in the series can be read as standalone stories. You don’t need to read them beforehand. Now saying that you can’t hold it against me if you read one story and then feel the need to read all of them.

AUDIO BOOK review. BRIDGE TO BURN is the seventh book in the Detective Kay Hunter series, and I honestly don’t think I will ever get tired of reading these books with my ears.

Only because I’ve read the six previous books, I began to feel dread about 6 minutes in to listening. I wasn’t about to be lulled-in to thinking all was well in this innocuous scene – just a man doing his job – and narrator Alison Campbell is smooth as silk in describing it. Nothing to see here, folks, until… WHAM! In BRIDGE TO BURN, there are indeed the expected twists and turns readers have come to enjoy in the series, but there is a subtle difference that made the big reveal (and the other big reveal…and the other one) more surprising. It’s a real change of pace that Kay isn’t ever in any physical danger. No one is trying to hurt her – except the shadows of traumatic memories of those who have in the past. And as Forrest Gump said, “That’s all I have to say about that.”

Kay’s team of detectives are all back together and more cohesive than ever. And, there’s a new addition, Amanda, a young and whip-smart finance expert, who totally appeals to the numbers nerd in me. The camaraderie and supportive culture within this group gives warmth to what could easily be a cold environment. Kay’s leadership has the team working as a well-oiled machine, but it’s also clear that Kay misses the relationships before she was promoted.

“Give her a hardened criminal any day -- anyone other than the woman who sat in a hospital corridor over a hundred miles away who hated every ounce of Kay’s chosen career.”

Readers will be pleased that in BRIDGE TO BURN, they get to get personal with Kay again, as Kay’s extended family comes back into the picture with all the related tension and drama built by some of the prior books. Amphlett continues to reveal only small doses of Kay’s complicated family, but they are high-interest and add a layer of realism to the story that allows readers to be able to better relate to Kay. Happily, Kay’s faithful husband Adam (along with the latest pet he’s brought home from the clinic) is a steady presence in the story. I just want to hug him for all the things he does right in their marriage.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: No surprise here. Alison Campbell NAILS the British-ness of it all, whether voicing male or female, young or old. Somehow, even the most macabre of details are palatable when delivered by Alison Campbell’s delightful accents. I will admit that I *gasp* listened to this one at regular speed and drank in every syllable. With the audio coming in at just over six and a half hours, it is a luxury that readers can afford. (This series hits my audio book length sweet spot.) In addition to the British, Campbell provides yet another delightful accent and attitude in voicing the new character, Amanda. (I don’t know my accents well-enough to be sure, but I think that might be an Irish lilt? It’s lovely.) Side note: this book was provided through the Authors Direct platform. Pro: it allows listeners to control the speed in 15 second increments versus Audible’s 30; Con: laptop listening isn’t an option – it works only on the app installed to a phone or tablet.

Thank you to Audiobookworm Promotions and the author for providing me a digital download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. As always, I anxiously await the next book in the series, and seriously, I can envision author Rachel Amphlett continuing to write them right through Kay being a middle-aged woman, at the top of the career ladder. Now wouldn’t that be a twist? This full review and other special features on Hall Ways Blog.

Note: While this is Book 7 in the series, it works just fine as a stand alone.

Gosh, I just love this series. I look forward to each new installment. I want to grow up to be Detective Kay Hunter. This story kept me guessing right up until the end.

Kay and her man Adam continue to develop even as the main focus is on solving the murder mystery. Kay has a family emergency at one point and I love how Adam steps in to help her out and also defend her against her mom’s anger and stress. These two are such a solid couple, very good for each other. But it’s not all sappy and their romance never steals the show from the real reason I’m here: Murder!

This case deals with a mummified body found in the false ceiling of a building. I didn’t think you could get a body mummified in the UK, outside of a bog. But I guess a heat wave can dry out a body, even in England. This body presents more than one mystery. First, they must find out who it is, then they have to untangle what actually killed him.

I liked how the tale dug into the dark underbelly of contract bidding for building jobs. Totally believable! That also gave me several suspects to squint my eyes at. Kay also had a financial investigator brought in to work with her team to help them untangle the finances of their main suspects.

The side characters continue to grow a little too. Ian showed the most growth, as he’s come to be Kay’s right hand man. It’s great to see Gavin and Karissa keeping a hand in the story line. Everyone contributes to untangling this mystery. I did not guess who the final culprit was and what their motives were, which I really liked. All around, 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Alison Campbell continues to do this series justice. She’s continued to add finesse to her performance of these characters. She is the voice of Kay Hunter now, I can’t imagine having someone else play Kay. I enjoyed her graveling, belligerent voice for the ex-con, as well has her kids’s voices for the teens. There were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

The heat is on Detective Inspector Kay Hunter and her team to find another killer on the loose! What level would you go to find the truth when it seems like no one can be trusted? All suspects seem to be burning their bridges. Amphlett captivates her readers with this mystery; this time it is a man found dead and walled up in a ceiling cavity. Everyone is quick to point fingers, but when push comes to shove, everyone has secrets and reasons for leading the detectives on a wild goose chase.

DI Hunter is back at another raw and unpredictable case, a man stuck in a ceiling cavity. It doesn’t get any weirder than that, does it? Once Hunter and her team are assigned to the case, the weird-o-meter spikes! The John Doe ends up being someone who was supposed to be miles away—and everyone has a motive for wanting his death. Kay has a lot to deal with already, and then her family issues on top of that. The John Doe definitely didn’t make it any easier to find out who the killer is either, with his motives as to why he was there being suspicious as well. It seems like a huge business crime ring has taken place, one crime leading after another in a world full of company rivalry and predecessors.

Amphlett has done an incredible job with character development. All of the characters have motive, but they all seem quick to point fingers at other people. The heightened crime mystery is relayed to the reader quite well and the pace is wonderful. Since this review is complimenting the audiobook, it appears that the story is well-written from the voice relay. Campbell’s narration is impeccable and enjoyable, which continues to carry throughout the entire series. If you are a reader of crime mystery and suspense, you may want to pick up this installment; however, there are previous installments that you may want to delve into before this one. It can be read as a standalone as far as the crime goes, but the character banter and personal dilemmas carryover from prior installments.

An audiobook was provided to Turning Another Page by Audiobookworm Promotions and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a five-star rating to Bridge to Burn by Rachel Amphlett.

Early on in this series, I decided that the Detective Kay Hunter series had become one of my favorite police procedurals, enhanced even further by its British setting. This newest book is just as good with one exception having to do with the audio production as I’ll note later.

One of the attractions, for me, is the strong relationships among the characters, both professional and personal, and each new episode brings me closer to the people. That’s especially true with Kay, of course, but they all get their chance to stand out in one book or another. As for the plot, this one is a little different in that it leans more in the direction of white collar and organized crime and, while I don’t generally find those elements especially appealing, Kay and her team make them more intriguing and compelling than I would have expected, beginning with the mummified body falling out of a ceiling. How they follow various leads kept me riveted while I tried to figure things out myself.

Narrator Alison Campbell is one of my favorites but I did find the quality of this production less satisfying due to the recent switch to a new format meant for use on a cellphone. I really don’t care for this because I don’t want to listen to a book on my phone and the quality is just not as good as when I can download to my iPod and listen to it in my car. Perhaps it’s just me but I couldn’t play this through my car’s speakers and, as a result, it was a strain to hear it and Ms. Campbell’s voice frequently dropped too much.

That aside, I will most certainly continue with this series as long as Ms. Amphlett keeps writing them 😉

I can't believe this is already the seventh book in this series, and that the quality has not diminished since that first book that captivated my attention. This time, Kay Hunter investigates the case of a man found mummified in a building under renovations. At the same time, she's also dealing with some family drama, which won't make things easy.

The story trapped me from the start. Who was the man they found and who had killed and why was he hidden there? There were several twists and turns and we only find the culprit towards the end, and it was not at all who I expected. We met the usual sidekicks helping Kay on this case, and several other characters who made this tale a convoluted story in which everyone seemed to have a hidden agenda.

Kay seems much more confident than in previous books. We have seen her and her team evolve, and I have to say that seven books have made me care for all of them, and listening to a new installment is like returning to a group of old friends.

Alison Campbell's style and voice is the perfect match for these stories, and she is for me an essential part in the series. She has not only become Kay Hunter but also brought a varied cast to life, even employing different accents and styles.

I am ready for the next book in the series, whenever Amphlett has it ready for us. I am an unconditional Kay Hunter's fan.

I had high expectations of this novel and I'm delighted to report that not only were they met but exceeded! Another stunning read from one of my favourite authors who always delivers an exciting and fast-paced read!

DI Kay Hunter is once again the senior officer when a body is discovered on her patch. With her team, she sets about unravelling what has happened and, ultimately, who is responsible.

I adore this series; Kay Hunter has to be one of my favourite characters. This author conveys the anger and frustration of the whole investigating team as the strive to come up with answers, and whilst personal lives are touched upon the main focus of the novel is always the current case. There are some lighter - and darker - moments entwined within the story, and I loved the reference to the first novel. That really made me smile! With this seventh book, this series is as fresh as ever; Kay and her team use everything at their disposal to solve their cases and I find the up-to-date methods absolutely fascinating. It's amazing how crime solving has changed in recent years, and Rachel Amphlett makes great use of every available tool.

My thanks to the author for my copy of her novel. I chose to read this book, and this review is my honest, original and unbiased opinion.

********* AUDIOBOOK REVIEW *********

I’ll be honest, Bridge to Burn was a lot less thrilling then Rachel Amphlett’s previous books in the series. The story itself was built just like I’ve come to expect from this author. The writing was thorough and descriptive. Really, it was the plot that felt a smidge dull. I wanted more death and destruction and was a bit let done with the one and done... does that make me sick? The case wasn’t an easy one and I didn’t piece it all together until Kay Hunter was about to break it all down for us. So the mystery was really good and complex. I’m in no way saying this is bad, it’s quite the opposite, it was very good. I’m hoping to get more of these detective stories with Kay Hunter. I just want more death and destruction! Is that too much to ask for?!? Lol ok, as long as it fits the story. It wouldn’t have in this case.

The narrator is the same as the 6 other books, Alison Campbell. I love her accent. Now obviously this book is set in the UK and so the narrator has a British accent. I love it!! Seriously I can’t get enough of it and the way she says “schedule”. I know, I know, I’m a total odd ball. But it such a pleasant voice. I didn’t have a single issue with the narration. Nor was there any problem with the technical side of the narration. Perfection!

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Rachel Amphlett. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. I have listened to all of the books in the Kay Hunter series so far and I enjoy them.

Kay Hunter and her team are called when a mummified body falls out of a ceiling in a building and lands on someone. Can you imagine? Once they identify the body, will they be able to track down the murderer after all this time? As the team investigates, they expose criminal activity of a local business that has a security contract with the business, but they’re not sure that they are responsible for the murder.

This series is about the same investigators, but each case is quite a bit different. I like Kay Hunter and the members of her team. She’s intelligent, strong, and dedicated and her team members are supportive of her and each other, and they are close enough that they know each other well.

Rachel Amphlett has a great writing style and the narrator does a good job with pace and enunciation. Bridge to Burn is a detective mystery with an interesting and surprising end. If you like crime fiction, this is a must read. I’m looking forward to more Kay Hunter books.

This is another book in the Detective Kay Hunter series. Good police procedural type book where you feel the frustration of the team trying to solve the mystery of the mummified body of a young man that fell from a ceiling space. I would recommend that you read previous books in this series, just to get a feel for who all the characters are, as it makes it easier to follow. I like that Kay has a relationship with a vet, (rather than none or a relationship with another person associated with the law) as it gives her another dimension, and an interesting sideline into her personal life, despite being a workaholic.

Quite a few twists and turns and a few red herrings but I felt this book was missing something and the ending was not quite what I expected. It didn't seem to really match up with the blurb on the back cover, which is why I couldn't quite give 5 stars.

Audiobook Review
Story 5 stars
Performance 5 stars
Overall 5 stars

The Detective Kay Hunter series is one of my favorites! The twists and turns of this who done it just keep on coming. I was shocked at the outcome in Bridge to Burn. The author definitely snuck that one by me. I was guessing from the first page to the last.

If you are new to the series, Amphlett does a good job of explaining any backstory that is relevant to the current storyline. While you won't be lost, still recommend checking out the entire series. You won't be disappointed.

Alison Campbell as the narrator is absolutely fantastic. She lends a unique voice to each of the female, as well as the male, characters. Campbell is my favorite female narrator.

Kay's personal life gets a front seat in this book as in the middle of a particularly strange investigation she finds her beloved father in the hospital. Although she drops everything to be by his side her mother's sharp tongue leaves her feeling torn between her responsibility to family and her responsibility to her job.

Kay loves her job and her squad and she is good at what she does. Her father knows that, her partner supports her but Kay can't seem to help feeling like she is doing something wrong. That she is never quite good enough at anything.

Alison Campbell is a fabulous narrator and really captures the whole feel of the characters and the book.

DI Kay Hunter and her team have a murder to investigate. I was drawn in from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. There's a lot of sneaky characters in this book and a lot of good ones too. I love the way they investigate and look at every angle. The plot is really well written. There are side stories that help you get into the thinking of others and surprising twists in the plot. I would never have guessed who or what the killer was. This is a great book in a great series and I definitely recommend it. They can all be read as stand alone books also.

I'm a little sad that this series has lost a little bit of the punchiness that the previous books in the series had. Having said that, the action picked up from the first page, and didn't let up all the way until the climax. The plot twists kept me guessing, even with some of the obvious tropes I have ever read, and minor plot lines getting dropped onto the floor and forgotten about. The climax was rather delicious and I would have preferred more resolution, but what was there tugged at my heart strings. I'm looking forward to continuing this series.

Kay Hunter at her best

A winner as expected. Kay Hunter once more comes across as detailed oriented inspector with great managerial skills. Her compassion side helps her feel the angst of others and act accordingly.
Ms. AMPHLETT style is superb. Without skipping on the descriptive aspect of her plots and subplots her use of dialogues makes this a fast-paced read. I can't wait for the next one.

Better than the last book, mote twists which kept me guessing.
Also the police-work and even little scenes (working at a computer etc.) are very well done and felt real to me (wiggeling the mouse to wake up the coomputer, although it was repeated a bit much in the book).
Like in the last book, taking place now and in the UK and still not a word about BREXIT.

Read this back2back with "Gone to ground", the previous book in the series.
Highly Recommended. Nice fast read.
