I received an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review of this book.
Once again, Toby Neal invites us into her world to tell us a story. This is the continuation of the story of a woman, Sophie Ang, who has been torn apart and is putting herself together slowly. Sophie has been working for the FBI but realizes the relationship is not going to work for her any longer. She goes “rogue”, in the sense that she begins working for a security consulting firm. There are far fewer rules than with the FBI, everything feels fast and loose, and for a while, Sophie, who has spent her career in IT, feels lost. As she finds her footing, though, she begins to feel empowered.
Toby’s strengths as a writer come from her ability to draw three-dimensional characters whom the reader begins to know as well as any real person, from her ability to create a sense of place where the reader can see, hear, and smell the surroundings, and from her ability to weave a tight plot with believable twists and turns. The action never stops in this book, and I could not put it down.
In terms of character development, we learn much more about Sophie’s battle with depression, and her struggle to give and receive love. We are on a journey with Sophie as she learns who she is and what drives her. As she strives to save the children of an ex-cult member and solve the disappearances of several women in the cult, Sophie begins to see more clearly who she is. A serious accident gives her time to think about what will happen next in her life.
Wired Rogue is satisfyingly rich in detail. It’s a fast-paced wild ride with excellent plot twists. Although I had already guessed at the ending, and I won’t spoil it for you, it still felt good when Sophie solved a major mystery in her life.
