Introducing Ethics: A Graphic Guide

Rate this book
What is the place of individual choice and consequence in a post-Holocaust world of continuing genocidal ethnic cleansing? Is "identity" now a last-ditch cultural defence of ethnic nationalisms and competing fundamentalisms? In a climate of instant information, free markets and possible ecological disaster, how do we define "rights", self-interest and civic duties? What are the acceptable limits of scientific investigation and genetic engineering, the rights and wrongs of animal rights, euthanasia and civil disobedience?"Introducing Ethics" confronts these dilemmas, tracing the arguments of the great moral thinkers, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes and Kant, and brings us up to date with postmodern critics.

The book is largely a historical survey of the Western ethical tradition, but it ends on a discussion of particular ethical issues (the environment, the treatment of animals, and euthanasia). I like the whimsical graphics featured in this series, and the explanations are generally quite clear. However, I found that Robinson's opinion of particular thinkers bled through at times (e.g., he uses the word "dull" in reference to Aristotle's ideas more than once).

My more serious objection is to the book's Eurocentrism. In the entire book, the only reference to a non-Western ethical perspective is a brief mention of Buddhism on page 141. I would like to see an update of the book to represent ethical traditions from other parts of the world.

A very refreshing book. As someone who struggles to stay focused when reading this book did an amazing job of keeping the information short and sweet. They made it easy to understand the concepts being discussed and often added in some jokes. One of my favourites was the euthanasia section at the end. I could clearly tell the authors views on this topic as they joked about not being able to euthanise patients due to the impact it would have on the medical field, how it would impact research into pain relief and diseases and also the slippery slope it would create. I particularly like the fact that it had graphics to go with it as it did make it more engaging and interesting. Can’t wait to read some more books from this series.

I like this book for what it does, but have problems with the issues it skips.

WHAT IT DOES: Covers the history of ethical philosophy from Plato to post-modernism concisely and informatively. States the different ethical schools clearly. Demonstrates the strengths and problems with each. Shows that all ethical systems break down when examined, except possibly post-modernism. (Give that time guys, p-m is too new to be demolished by the next generation of philosophers yet.) Gives a devastating post-modernist critique of modern society and its ethical failures. Looks briefly at Feminist ethics, animal ethics, and euthanasia.

WHAT IT FAILS TO DO: Since situational ethics is so commonly used in Western society, it is disappointing that the book barely mentions them, and does not devote a section to them. Some major ethical problems are not covered in sufficient depth, such as just wars, lying, betrayal, seeking power, and a few others. The book was written pre-9/11, an incident that pushed the reactionary laws and ethics of fundamentalist groups forward in our minds. The book does touch nicely on the dogmatic ethics of the religious, but needs more of this in the post-9/11 world.

On balance, the book does what it chooses to do very well, but it needed to choose to do more to be a really great book. There is a brief Shakespeare quotation on page 46.

Chris Garratt's "Introducing Ethics: A Graphic Guide" presents a compelling and accessible journey into the complex realm of ethical theory and philosophy through the innovative medium of graphics and concise explanations. Aimed at both newcomers to philosophy and seasoned thinkers, Garratt's work succeeds in making ethical theories comprehensible without sacrificing depth.

The book's strength lies in its visual narrative, employing a blend of illustrations, diagrams, and text to elucidate key concepts. This approach not only engages the reader but also aids in the understanding of abstract philosophical ideas. Garratt masterfully integrates historical contexts, major philosophical debates, and contemporary issues into a cohesive narrative, ensuring that readers grasp the relevance of ethical theories in everyday life.

One of the standout features of the book is its balance between breadth and depth. Garratt covers a wide range of ethical theories—from utilitarianism to deontology, virtue ethics to existentialism—providing enough detail to stimulate thought while avoiding overwhelming technical jargon. Each theory is accompanied by clear examples and scenarios that help readers apply these concepts to real-world dilemmas, encouraging critical reflection.

Moreover, "Introducing Ethics" excels in its treatment of ethical controversies and the evolving nature of moral discourse. Garratt addresses contentious issues such as cultural relativism, animal rights, and environmental ethics with sensitivity, presenting various perspectives and inviting readers to form their own conclusions. This inclusive approach fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages readers to engage actively with ethical questions rather than passively consuming information.

In terms of structure, the book is well-organized into thematic chapters that build upon each other logically. Starting with foundational concepts and gradually progressing to more nuanced discussions, Garratt ensures that readers develop a solid understanding of ethical frameworks before delving into complex moral dilemmas. Each chapter concludes with a summary and suggestions for further reading, making the book a valuable resource for both individual study and classroom use.

Critically, while the graphic format enhances accessibility, some readers may find the simplistic illustrations occasionally inadequate for conveying the full complexity of certain philosophical arguments. Additionally, the brevity necessitated by the graphic guide format may leave readers craving more detailed analysis of specific theories or contemporary ethical challenges.

Overall, Chris Garratt's "Introducing Ethics: A Graphic Guide" is a commendable introduction to the field of ethics, offering a refreshing blend of visual storytelling and intellectual rigor. By demystifying philosophical concepts and fostering critical thinking, Garratt empowers readers to navigate the complexities of morality with clarity and confidence. This book is a valuable addition to the literature on ethics, appealing to anyone curious about the fundamental principles that shape human behavior and societal norms.

Rating: 4/5

This rating reflects the book's effectiveness in making ethics accessible through innovative presentation while acknowledging minor limitations in depth and illustration complexity.

This is one title in the “A Graphic Guide” series of books, many of which (including this one) are available on Amazon Prime. The books in the series explain fundamentals for a wide range of academic subjects, using simple descriptions supported by graphics. This particular book examines the philosophy of ethics and morality.

The book consists of a large number (almost 130) short topical sections, each with supporting graphics. Each section is just a page or two in length. The book has a chronological flow, moving from Socrates through the Postmodern philosophers. The nature of the topics varies, sometimes it is the view of a particular philosopher or school of philosophy, sometimes it’s a fundamental question or point of contention, and sometimes it’s a specific ethical issue. The last twenty-ish statements elaborate on two specific cases that the book addresses in detail: animal rights and euthanasia.

I felt the author did a good job of laying out a number of fault lines, controversies at the heart of differing views of ethics. The controversy that gets the most attention is that between absolutists and relativists. (Absolutists claim there are a set of core moral rules that are universally applicable, while relativists say one can’t make such rules because the morality of every action is relative, be it: situationally, culturally, or individually. An extreme view from either perspective is inconsistent with what one tends to sees in the real world.) A second point of contention regards whether ethical constraints are determined at the individual level or the societal / tribal / group level? A third controversy consists of a subjectivity versus objectivity divide – i.e. is morality just about what feels right or is there an objective way of defining moral knowledge? A significant portion of the book deals with the rivalries about these points, and – to a lesser degree – others (e.g. is biology the root of ethics or is it a domain devoid of ethics?)

There are cartoon drawings with most of the sections that illustrate key points, and / or depict interactions between rival philosophers. There is a “further reading” section in the back that suggests books to expand one’s grasp of the subject beyond the bare fundamentals that are addressed in this book.

I thought this book did a good job of laying out the issues. The cases (animal rights and euthanasia) helped show how different schools of thought apply their ideas to specific questions. I particularly enjoyed how the book clarified the subject through discussion of key questions of contention. If you have Amazon Prime, it’s definitely worth checking this one out. If not, you may want to see how it compares to the “A Very Short Introduction” guide for Oxford University Press, which is a similar series that explains the basics of a subject in a concise fashion.

Virtue
Utilitarianism
Deontology

Morality ,according to Kant, is not about doing what comes naturally, but resisting it.

“Rights talk” , the one demands for his rights, gets 'em.

Regarding the animal ethics, some people suggests experiencing on infants just like the animals in order to assure his seriousness of the experiment and to make sure he/she is not “species-ist” .

The Uncertainty and Scepticism that POSTMODERNISIM left us, can seem kinda destructive but, i hope, it'd be a solid foundation for a more understanding and moral future. I mean, that quite certainty that politicians, religious and ethical people had costed us way tremendously enough.

A basic introduction to ethics. The illustrations are brilliant to sum up each chapter
It traces the emergence and need of ethics all the way from Aristotle to Sartre
Tries to come up with an explanation for " why we need ethics?"
You can trace the history of ideologies and social concerns of different cultures and societies in different era..
Gets really interesting once it delves into post mordenism, You can sense the major shift in thoughts from collectivism to individualism.

The conclusion leaves you with more questions than answers
Every book dealing with philosophy should do that!

I would have enjoyed this book more if there were more nuances and anecdotes along with illustrations, just the way Yuval Noah Hari makes his points in his books.

Felt bored while reading "Utilitarianism" section

Hmmm this was an interesting one.

I've always had a passion for ethics so I thought I'd try this. It was fun to read but maybe a little uneven.

Pros: the background into the philosophy of ethics was undoubtedly more interesting and certainly digestible than in a traditional book.

Some of the debates and the sections on euthanasia and animal rights were very engaging.

Cons: the pictures were sometimes helpful and sometimes just there.

Some of the explanations were vague and hard to follow.

Not sure why the author only picked two seemingly random topics to expand upon.

Author inserts himself in there a bit too much for a short little book. You needed point/counterpoint for sure but less 'this is the answer.'

Still overall for a <200 page comic with many drawings you'll definitely get more out of it than you'd think!

An informative, non-intimidating read.

Filled with clear explanations and informative cartoons, the book is a welcoming introduction to the countless conversations in ethics. The pages are filled with generously sized cartoons of the theorists talking about their theories or arguing with each other's theories, so it is much more interesting to read and remember than a textbook, while still being very informative. Being an introductory book, it does mean the ideas of theorists are probably more complex than what has just been written. The book could also do to add the thoughts of non-Western thinkers. Still, I think I learnt a bit more about ethics, though from my first reading, the theory doesn't really help with solving ethical problems yet.

Once upon a time, i aske my father’s permission to choose philosophy as my undergraduate major so i could get into the very prestigious state university in my country. My father disagreed and said, you willget confused with philosophy, you will even asked the existence of god. I thought, hey isnt it normal to ask for god’s existence? but i decided not to choose philosophy.
Several years later, when i took my graduate degree, i bumped into several subjects that have the essence of philosophy. And i was lost.
Raise in a very relogious yet moderate family, i have my stance on the value of life, norma, moral and ethics. So i know what my stance are when i read this graphic guide. Yet i enjoy the book, especially the ancient part, the part when postmodernmism existed.

This book is expired. I generally enjoy this series and have a small collection. They definitely help a casual reader or student grasp the big picture of sprawling complex topics, and with humor and neat stories. But this one reads like the authors had teenaged versions of themselves as the intended audience. A book for British boys scratching their heads in Philosophy 101. Women don't exist until page 124 or so. Published in the mid-90s, we've navigated more ethical terrain such that this book is quaint at best. It matters in this book given nearly half is focused on the question of ethics in the 20th century. It should be rewritten to improve its central framework, and perhaps then it could be re-shelved. Until then, don't bother.

Ready to challenge your personal views?

It deserves a four star rating due to the excellent examples used throughout this book and the wife ranging coverage of this field. It is a perceptive introduction to this area of philosophical thought.

This book is a bit dated, and could use some revisions. Nonetheless, the examples used are spot on. The graphic "bubbles" are much more to the point in this case than in other books in this series.

One area in need of updating is the "For Further Reading" section. Most all the books are very good recommendations , but are way out of date by decades. This is still a good introduction.

This one was very good!
The main thing it helped with was connecting the dots. A majority of the book covers the historical evolution of philosophical thought on morals, but it does so, touching on all the important questions. In the end it briefly covers moral questions of two specific examples: animal cruelty and euthanasia.
One if my favorite aspects of this book versus any other in the series was that it has a few pages of summary and recap in the end, although I do not like the sweeping generalizations of postmodern thought that it contains. His takeaway, however, is an interesting one!

This is actually bettered titled 'Introducing the history of Ethics', rather than introducing how to think ethically per se which I guess I expected and really wanted. Like all the Introducing in the Ikon books series these are really good, but I am still frustrated they are not properly referenced. You often don't know if the author is speaking or the philosopher/psychologist etc. being discussed. This is the same throughout the series. So when you get to something good you never truly sure of who is the source.
