As with Sylvester Stallone's SLY MOVES about ten years ago, TRAIN LIKE AN ACTION HERO is a combination autobiography and exercise book. Dolph takes things one step further and includes tips on self defense, as well as advice on stretching and nutrition. The result is a book that spreads itself too thin and doesn't have time to go into a whole lot of detail. Mostly, I read this book for the autobiographical stuff, though I'm also interested in getting into less-bad shape. Disappointingly, Dolph only recounts his life prior to ROCKY 4...so don't go expecting any behind-the-scenes looks at your favorite action movies. Dolph's recommended exercise routines seem effective, but they strike me as pretty advanced for a novice like me. I was hoping there would be different routines for different levels of ability, but such is not the case. There's also not much in the way of explanation for each exercise, so you'll probably need to go online and double-check that you are doing them correctly. There's also no information on which kind of exercises should be avoided. The stuff on nutrition is very basic. Dolph tells you what he eats and what supplements he takes, but doesn't really explain the reasoning behind his choices. And the self defense stuff seems strangely out of place. I wish that, instead of writing this one book, Dolph had written three books: an autobiography, an exercise book, and a book on karate. Maybe someday, he'll find the time. In the meantime, I'm just glad that his career has been somewhat rejuvenated thanks to the EXPENDABLES franchise.
Not just a book about getting ripped but insightful and heartwarming. Stories of his life and advise on mindfulness. Exercise regimes for all levels of fitness. And helpful recipes. Love Dolph Lundgren and loved this book.
Fast read, good insights into Dolph's career/life, and workouts that seem easy to recreate in pretty much any gym or hotel workout room. Staring down 40, maybe it's time for a fitness reboot lol
Dolph offers some good advice. He acknowledges his bias as an entertainer to have a particular kind of physique but he encourages everyone to evaluate what role fitness can have in their lifestyle. The philosophy is centered around lifestyle choices instead of diets or shallow motives. He wants you to think about how fitness would improve your life and lists some steps on how to get there. He uses his own life as an example and its quite the story. He's got a very unique rise to fame and the autobiographical sections offered a nice break from the fitness outlines. There's definitely things I've adopted since reading this book, especially in terms of staying motivated. I'm going to keep it on standby specifically for the "No Excuses" workout section. He shows you exercise routines you can do with no equipment that take only 15 minutes and give you a well-rounded workout.
This book is an autobiographical fitness book written by Dolph Lundgren. He intersperses his advice on exercise and diet with some high level details about his life, mostly focusing on his childhood through his Rocky IV movie role. This book has exercise descriptions, workout plans, notes on diet, and even self-defense tips. This book does not go into much detail about life in Hollywood or making movies.
I liked this book overall. I thought he gave some down-to-earth, pragmatic advice. The biographical information was just enough to see why health and fitness has been important to him. I was surprised by a few things, like that he studied chemical engineering and enrolled at MIT for a Ph.D. program, or that he dated Grace Jones before he was famous.
Libro simpático, abarca de forma directa la vida de Dolph. Desde su difícil infancia hasta la actualidad intercalando sus principales capítulos de vida con diferentes rutinas de ejercicio.
Directo y al detalle, muy recomendado para todo fan.
Life is about change and no one has changed as much as a young Swedish boy who grew to be one of the the more known action stars of his time. Starting out as a skinny kid with severe allergies and unable to join in with other youths, abused at home, Dolph learned to stand the pain and not give in, this trait would serve him well in the future. Saved from a youth gone bad, Dolph was raised by his grandparents, earned his Masters in Chemical Engineering, and winning the hearts of millions.
Dolph over the years of martial arts training, weights, and ice hockey as well as swimming and other sports has developed his own method of ensuring he gets both his workouts as well as the needed nutrition to fuel those workouts and sustain him during the long days of being an action actor.
This was a good read, mixed as much as a autobiography as well as a workout guide. If you have a back ground in weights and fitness perhaps much will be old hat, though everyone should come away with something as well as a little more understanding of what it takes to succeed.
I comtemplated taking on the task of learning Swedish just so I could read this book because it was only published in Swedish which is Dolph Lundgrens nationality. I'm happy to say that I no longer have to resort to doing such a thing because he announced that it will be translated to English and available for purchace in November. I, however, have already pre-ordered my copy and will patiently wait till November to recieve it in the mail via Amazon. :)
I'm eager to read what this man has to say about nutrition, and physical fitness. I will have to say that by the looks of Dolph, he has something to say that should be heard. To look at him is to see that he is living proof that you can indeed be Fit Forever.
Great book with a misleading title (fortunately)... Dolph's life is quite interesting and his habits and discipline something beyond ordinary. Just imagine the history of child raised with in middle class Swedish family whose father was con decorated member of the military forces, that end up getting a chemistry phd scholarship in the MIT, a full contact karate world championship, and a succesful career as an action movie star.
Enjoyed the book. Great illustrations and explanation on exercises. I enjoyed learning about Dolph too and what it takes to be in the kind of shape he is in. I hope I can look like him when I am 60.
