Angels of Sojourn #2.25

Broken & Burnt: A Sweet Fallen Angel Paranormal Romance

Rate this book
Some decisions are worth the consequences…

Fallen Angel, Bree, is far from perfect. Most recently, she stole from work and revealed her wings to her dying sister. On top of this, when a Highest Order Angel comes to remove her wings for her crimes, she accidentally stabs him during her attempted escape. Any hope she had of forgiveness is far out of her reach.

Highest Order Angel, Jaxon, has a perfect record, and he’s proud of it. He loves his job upholding justice, but when a fallen angel with beautiful eyes distracts him, causing his first slip-up in over fifty years, he won’t go home until he finishes what he started. What’s even worse, the fallen angel he was sent to punish is also the compassionate one who risks everything to save his life.

Joynell Schultz spends her days working in a “reliable profession” as a veterinary pharmacist, which pays the bills, but isn’t nearly as exciting as creating alternative worlds writing speculative fiction. I love the Angels of Sojourn books - Ms. Schultz has written about angels which are not the usual - more human, more fallible, more prone to doing things their way. Check out Michael in the 2010 movie "Legion" - there are definite similarities, although these books are significantly sweeter and lighter.

As the Demon Cancer are her from the Inside!
So, she Gladly made her Choice...
Knowing she'd Face MORE than just Falling in the END!
Then, he comes to take her wings...
But she's not ready, as her Sister still NEEDS her for a Few Days Yet!
Her asking for a Short Reprieve...
Sets in Motion some interesting Consequences,
For HER & the Angel set to mete Out Justice...

Originally found in Wings & Wonder.

Burnt & Broken - I had to read all the Angels of Sojourn books that I had. Ms. Schultz just has a way about her: her writing style; her realistic characters; her understated sexual tension between characters; and her infrequent use of vulgar language. This is a well written story complete with a well though out plot and believable dialog that moves at a fast pace. I appreciate that while the angels once were human, they don't behave as humans; sex, vulgar language and all the other stupidity. Her angels behave as angels, even the "tainted" or fallen angels are good, they're just in a gray area. Their mistakes were actually to help someone in need or pain. There is plenty of suspense and intrigue in this short story. 5*

Blood & Holy Water: Angels of Sojourn, Book One - I couldn't put this book down without a fight. Another well written, well thought out story concerning an unusual vampire (I like what was done with this character) and a wingless angel. Enemies with the same goal, but different results gained, work together to solve the deaths of potential angels and murdered vampires, and the ties between the two groups. The characters are realistic and both have morals and ethics. The angel goes a little gray, but there's so much involved in her decisions in trying to help the humans and potential angels. There's intrigue and suspense, and the book moves at a fast pace. There's sexual tension, but no sex - thank goodness this author treats angels as angels not sex starved humans without morals - and very infrequent vulgar language. 5*

Fangs & Fairy Dust - I enjoy Ms. Schultz's stories, which I discovered in Hexes and Ohs, and was happy to find this collection. This is a well written and believable novella introducing the Angels of Sojourn series, of which Blood & Holy Water is the first book. The main characters, a male vampire and a female human and her mother, are interesting and believable, along with action and dialog. It is fast paced and contains vivid descriptions making everything easy to visualize. Fortunately, it is not a cliffhanger. 4*

Broken and Burnt by Joynell Schultz
We meet Bree an angel who has fallen to earth when she found out her sister was dying painfully of cancer. That gets her into trouble with the Angels but her problems get worse when she steals medication from where she works to help her sister’s pain.
Another angel, Jaxon has been sent after Bree to remove her wings but is accidentally cut by his own sword when they finally meet up. Instead of leaving Jaxon where he has cut himself and is now unconscious in an alleyway, Bree stays to help.
I did not know much before about angels and their rules until I read Broken and Burnt, I’m more of a fairy girl but I enjoyed reading and learning about another realm of beings I knew nothing about. In fact most of what I know about fairies I read in children’s books and made up myself. I tend to go to fairyland in my head when I’m unwell, something my mum taught me when struggling to breathe with asthma as a tiny girl. I still live this way and reading helps me escape the pain of trying to breathe. I’m grateful for writers such as Joynell Schultz who enables me to get lost in her writing and so ignore the real world for my fantasy one which is much safer to me. I hope others find reading this book and her other works entertaining and comforting as well. Not everything we have to go through is to be feared. This is what I have learned through books such as this as well as experience. I received this book and the review is entirely my own. By Robbie Gaye-Murphy

A very enjoyable read! This book is a sweet clean romance about second chances and learning to live and love again after loss. Bree makes some questionable choices even though she has good intentions, but those actions leave behind consequences. A highest order angel is sent to Earth to take Bree’s wings, but their meeting turns into much more than either expected. This was my first foray into the Angels of Sojourn world and I find myself intrigued to learn more about these angels and read more books in the series.

Broken & Burnt is a novella spin-off from the Angels of Sojourns series.

Final Rating: 5 Stars

I've read all the published stories in the Angels of Sojourn world and have absolutely loved them all! Novel, novella, short story, doesn't matter, I love them! I get such a kick out of learning how Ms. Schultz designs the rules and culture of the angels, as well as how they interact with humans and other species. Bree and Jaxon are so great in this regard - we get to see what "rules" they're supposed to live by and what repercussions exist for those who don’t. Both of them are truly good angels, who were good humans first (which, of course, is how they even got to be angels); and the goodness in their hearts ends up putting them each in a difficult position where they have to choose between following the rules and doing what is kind, compassionate and loving.
Ms. Schultz never fails to create the most wonderful, sweet and cute stories and characters. And she always manages to give them unique and thoroughly entertaining plots which pull me right in and keep me engaged straight through to the last word!

A Fallen angel teaches a 'perfect' angel that there is always another perspective

I love Joy's books and was very happy to read another novella in her Angels of Sojourn series. Bree and Jaxon are the main characters and were so well-written that they jumped off the page as I was reading. Bree has transgressed the Angels' rules but she is a very sympathetic character and Jaxon is forced to look at things in a different way. Joy has created a world where angels walk among us, hidden from our sight, and this story is about justice and how not everything is black and white. I loved the story, and how Bree and Jaxon interacted, and I raced through to the end without stopping, eager to see how things would turn out for them.
Joy writes beautiful, heartwarming stories and I always look forward to them, knowing that I will be transported for a while. She is definitely an author worth getting to know.

Bree abandoned heaven to look after her terminally ill sister. Further, she stole drugs from her employer. And, even worse, she exposed her wings to comfort the sister. For this, Jaxon, an angel of the highest order, has been sent to take Bree's wings.

This Paranormal Angel Romance is charming. The protagonist does what many humans profess they might do in similar circumstances. The antagonist is from a cold and rigid heaven, as many humans believe it to be. The story is for the antagonist to recognize the disparity between how humans and heaven operate. To learn and grow in understanding. Overall, this tale is an elegant tale.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Haunting. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

Jaxon and Bree have a few things in common - being angels who follow the rules - then sometimes bend or break them to show compassion.

providing comfort to her dying sister will cost fallen angel Bree her wings, which she is willing to sacrifice, but begs only a bit of time to be there for her death.

Jaxon is called to take her wings, which would leave Bree mortal, but finds himself victim of an accidental injury on his own sword.

searching for the range available for compassion, love and pain, a compromise might be found, for love willing to sacrifice it.

a moving, and painful, story.

This story possibly more than any of the others in the series can be described as 'unexpected love'. I adored Bree as a very 'human' angel and my heart broke for her situation. Jaxon started out as pretty cold and unfeeling (as angels are wont to be in this world) but the longer he remained earth bond the more fond of him I became (and the more fond of Bree HE became). These two made an adorable couple that got an unorthodox but still very happy ending. All in all, another great addition to the world and possibly one of my favorites, even if it is a novella.

Interesting

Bree died and went to Sojourn but she only stayed a while. When she discovered that her sister on earth was in excruciating pain, she fell to help her. She knew the consequences of the action......one day an Angel would come to take her wings. Jaxson appeared in day. so

She asked him to wait a little longer and she would voluntarily give them up. What he did is interesting. Will she be able to keep her wings and help her sister? What will the Angel do??

I really enjoyed this short read. It was compact but packed a punch. The story was well written and the story and characters were well developed. I loved the selfless sassy female character and the relationship dynamics. The story had plenty of action, twists and turns, emotion, suspense and intrigue. I’d highly recommend this book!! I look forward to future books in this series!!

Great book. This story was so touching and amazing, the chemistry and connect between Jaxon and Bree was great. The characters were so realistic and the story showed the kindness and forgiveness of angels, (which is also a real life thing) yes, they aren't always wrathful all the time to the shock and surprise of many. The angel of death was a very nice touch too, I loved it. I would really love to get my hands on the rest of the Angels of sojourn books.

This is a novella to the Angels of Sojourn series (first book being blood and holy water). I really enjoyed this book even though it is short. Joynell’s writing is amazing and even in such a short space creates characters that have you hooked from the beginning. I can’t wait to read more from her.

This has turned out to be a solid series. This book was a very sweet story of love and loss and learning to live again. I'm not usually one for mushy, but this author writes characters that one learns to care about very quickly.

A really nice story (unlike a lot of Pippa's books. haha). There aren't any demons or other characters to dislike.

Bree is a fallen angel living on Earth and has broken some of the rules. Jaxon has come to Earth to remove Bree's wings - making her mortal.

Very nice characters

This was a very short read about a bad angel who was a good person. Another angel who comes down to punish her, then gets hurt with his own sword. A week later, another angel comes down to complete an unfinished task. Thus creating the angel version of hide and go seek.

Angels of Sojourn Series:

Blood & Holy Water #1 - I couldn't put this book down without a fight. 5*

Fangs & Fairy Dust #1.25- I enjoy Ms. 4*

Fur & Feathers #2 - Read Blood & Holy Water and Bitten first before reading this book since the characters continue with their lives in this story. The Angels of Sojourn has been an interesting series of books. Well written with interesting storylines and characters woven with a vivid imagination to keep the reader immersed in the pages. I was not lucky enough to read these books in sequence, but I still enjoyed all the stories. Each adds to a wonderful, intriguing and mesmerizing world that runs the gamut of emotions, and actions and consequences, complete with a constantly moving pace. I contacted the author to review her books and have purchased her books, too. 5*

Flame & Fortune #2.5 - Another good addition to the Angels of Sojourn Series. Different from the other books in this series, this one is about embezzlement and second chances. She's sent to earth to distract a human without knowing why. The story is fast paced, with good characters and dialog, and good storylines. There is emotion ranging from grief to happiness. I've read this series out of order and never felt lost or had spoilers ruining the other books. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*
