Heart pounding, jaw dropping, brings you out in a nervous sweat this does. Oh so dam good.
Why have I not taken time to read this authors books before? That’s just got to change from this point on. If I hadn’t got a few commitments to books this month and next I’d jump right into the one I’ve had sitting on my kindle for a huge length of time. I’m going to get to it though.
From the start you are embroiled into a sinister atmosphere where you can smell something is not right. And let me tell you...... It gets worse.
My reading juices were dribbling all the way through.
I love lots of dialogue in a book. I’m not one for pages and pages and pages of narration. I know......yes I know you need narration but you people know what I mean? Right?
Well this author can’t half pull a punch with his narration. And his descriptive telling of a struggle made me feel right in the middle of things, I felt scared and wanted to run. I kid you not, this is how the author writes so well it put me right there. Not sure as a character or spectator. More a spectator I think though.
The blurb tells you lots so I’m not going to reiterate anything new. It would be spoiled otherwise.
I’m going to keep my beady eye on this author as I don’t want to miss his future books that’s for sure.
If you love a good edge of your seat “what’s happening next” kind of read. You’ve found it!
Turn The Other Way is a dark, sinister, twisty read.
I have to say I wasn't overjoyed with this book in the beginning. The opening plot felt like it went on too long and I found myself drifting off, I nearly stopped reading. The blurb is seriously juicy, and i was so excited to get my hands on a copy. But I'm so glad I stuck with it as wow did the tension and suspense ramp up!
So my advice is stick with it, it only gets better and better. I'm a baby when it comes to horror books, but I do love a good thriller. But a word of warning this is edge of your seat, nail biting, sinister, a tad disturbing, atmospheric and dark so be prepared to get chills as it weaves a way into your skin! I had to take a break every now and then it got a lil much, and read a chick lit lol
So if your looking for the next horror thriller, that's unsettling, that ramps up the tension page by page until it's impossible to know who to trust, its deliciously dark and disturbing in all the right places, The twists and turns just keep on coming. The Characters are desperately flawed but written perfectly. Then I highly recommend Turn The Other Way . I can't wait to see what else Stuart writes.
Thank you to Book On The Bright Side Publicity & Promo for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
A book to read with the lights well and truly on!!!
From the start the author grabs your attention with a couple hearing a banging noise from a white van. They certainly don’t bargain for what they find inside. From then on in, the story takes lots of twists and turns with plenty of jaw dropping moments.
This is a novel that if I didn’t have such a hectic few days, I would easily have read in one sitting. All I thought about was being able to get back to the story to see what more horrors and surprises the author had in store for me. Believe me, when I say the horrors that do await you are chilling, but yet oh so thrilling.
This would make a great horror film. It is packed full of hair raising moments that both scare and delight the reader. I turned each page not knowing what to expect as the author managed to keep startling me with what I was reading as even though I knew it was going to be a twisted read, I just hadn’t bargained on how much of a one it would be.
Turn The Other Way is a guaranteed page turner and one that will have you hiding behind the cushions. It really gets the adrenaline pumping through your veins with all the excitement of thrills that are around every corner. There is no way I would ever suffer with a locked jaw whilst reading this novel as I read it with it mainly dropped as the author kept hitting me out of the blue with some horrible surprises, of which I absolutely loved. Great read and can’t wait to read more.
Back in the 1980’s I was a huge fan of horror books, Stephen King, Richard Laymen, Dean Koontz, I devoured them all, but it’s been a long time since I read a book I consider to fit the horror genre. For me horror is all about my emotional reaction, that feeling of fear and dread as you turn each page, the constant feeling you should be reading a book from behind a cushion (not practical but you get my drift), a book that makes the heart pound and every little noise makes you jump. This is exactly how Turn The Other Way by Stuart James made me feel, it’s a shocker of a horror thriller novel.
Turn The Other Way follows numerous characters and events, a distinguished doctor whose life is changed beyond recognition by an accident. A husband and wife that stumble upon a crime being committed and a daughter looking for her missing parents, a series of macabre murders are central to the plot. How, are what appear to be separate story lines connected? Well, they certainly kept me wondering, but as the story unfolds through past and present events, the author brings the three together in the most horrifying way. Meanwhile, Stuart James had my undivided attention, as the plot became more twisted, evil radiated from the pages within this heart thumping novel. As antagonist go the author has created a character from your worse nightmare, a character who is the devil reincarnated, who shows not a glimmer of remorse for his hideous crimes, but their antics and very disturbing games are guaranteed to keep the reader turning those pages.
Readers who prefer the more sedate crime horror thriller may be put off by all the blood and gore, but personally I feel the scenes are fitting to the storyline, and add a sense of fear and trepidation to the plot. I’m convinced at certain points in this book my blood pressure went through the roof, as the horrors of the plot unfolded. I read so many books that promise that “big twist” and I’m sorry to say but many of them fail to deliver, but not Stuart James, there’s twist upon twist, each one darker and more twisted than the last. It takes a lot to shock or surprise me but OMFG Turn The Other Way surpassed anything I was expecting. You know the saying “revenge is sweet”? This book is more a case of “revenge is dark, disturbing, and extremely painful”. Would I recommend this book? “It’s a hell yes” especially to those who love a horror thriller.
This book is a good read, abit of a cat and mouse game.its in two parts the past and the present.a doctor a young patient dies the mother convinced the doctor done something to her and the dr can't cope was he involved or depression took over.the present a couple following a van as what or who was inside.this book was fast paced and different read as straight to the point book keeps you wanting to read.
This is the first book I've read by this author and man he keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I haven't read many thriller/suspence books to give an accurate rating but I'm giving the author a 5 Star for keeping me glued to the book.
The book has multiple POVs and past and present chapters. Contains graphic event details.
⛔⛔⛔SOME SPOILERS⛔⛔⛔
Turn the Other Way the loss of one child leads to a brutal killing spree.
The bad characters are nasty and brutal kill for the chase and the high. The plot thickens as you read and then it becomes clear how the past links into the future and you can see how truly sick in the head these A-holes really are. You're keep on the edge of your seat wondering who's next on the list and what the hell is going to happen to them, will they get away? will they end up in a shallow grave? will they be lucky and escape? but then they have to live with the mental torture.
Will someone be able to put an end to these pointless deaths? Or will the continue and get away with more?
Review time!! Turn the other way by Stuart Dunne. 5/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I absolutely loved this book. It was a crazy ride!! Kept me up most of the night. If you like horror / thrillers this one is for you. This story will stay with me for a long time and that ending was mind blowing!! This is a brilliant chilling story with vibes of Texas chainsaw massacre and American Pshyco. I highly recommend this book!!!
What a psychological horror show! I haven't felt physically frightened reading a book as much as I did this one. Twisted, twisted, twisted but in a fun to read way. The freakshow family, the white van, and the unsuspecting victims made this one hell of a ride. I recommend this fraught, spine tingling thriller to anyone with a strong heart who loves to be scared shitless. Thank you Stuart James for the advance readers ebook to review and enjoy.
A bloody jumbled up mess that switched times zones more times than a "Back To The Future" Box Set. Far too many characters to contend with that I lost the plot many times along the way. A mixed up mash of things going on and happening all at the same time it became confusing and I found myself having to read some bits over again to clarify the story...Which I absolutely HATE having to do...it's annoying and wastes my valuable reading hours!! This book just seemed like it had been thrown together without much thought or care? Yeah...it COULD have been good...but I'm afraid it wasn't.
Do Yourself a Favour...Don't Bother Wasting Your Time Here...Simply Just....TURN THE OTHER WAY!!
This may have been a good book had it not been completely lacking in common sense. So many people in the same situation and no one calls for help from law enforcement?! The reasoning was explained but it still made very little sense to me. The coincidental situation with Noah (I won't give it away in case anyone reading this still wants to read the book) was just entirely too far fetched. This book read more like a silly slasher flick than an actual story which was incredibly disappointing.
Wow!! I just finished reading Turn The Other Way by Stuart James. If you love a story that is packed with mystery and suspense as well as huge twists and turns, this is the perfect read! This was really a brilliant and dark psychological thriller that hooked me right off the bat. Great characters that kept me guessing until the very end. About the time I thought I had it figured out this book would take another hairpin turn. So many great twists, seriously, they didn’t stop until the last sentence of the book. I can’t recommend this book enough. Thank you Stuart for the opportunity to be a beta reader for your new book. Definite 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I just finished this book. Five stars and then some. It was a chilling story with so many twists and turns. All I can say is WOW!! Absolutely brilliant.
Kindle freebies are always something of a gamble (albeit a gamble that costs nothing but readers’ time) and this one just didn’t pan out for me. It had such decent reviews all around, it seemed like it would be worth a read, but alas…no, not so much. To be fair, it isn’t by far the worst kindle freebie out there and it is well edited grammar and typo wise, so there’s that, but other than that it’s kind of a jumbled mess. In order to provide the plot twsts, the author utilized the trick of alternating timelines without making it obvious, which probably can be done right somehow, but here it created a lack of coherency. Too many characters, too many things going on, in too many different timezones…it’s just too busy of a narrative to enjoy, despite the fact that certain individual elements by themselves were decent enough. The writing wasn’t terrible, there were various stabs (pun intended) at character development and various slices (pun intended) of aha, got you, but the entire thing didn’t quite congeal into one delicious demented jello of depravity. Seems like it needed some streamlining at least and more originality would have been nice too. Literary psychos are dime a dozen these days, but it takes some genuine inventiveness (like a great shower scene) to create a really memorable one. And there was nothing memorable here. Plus it was much too long for what it was. The best thing about the book was that it read really quickly for the page count, but that certainly isn’t enough to make it worth the time. Again, though, mine seems to be a minority opinion when it comes to this book, so you’re welcome to draw your own conclusions. User mileage may vary and all that. Though I would recommend to turn the other way.
My first but certainly not my last read by this author. I read this within twenty four hours and if my family had have left me alone I’d have read it quicker. Once I started I didn’t want to put it down. Talk about sucking you right in!!
This is a brilliantly written story that had me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I knew what way the story was going the author threw a twist at me. I seriously didn’t know what way to think.
I’m not gonna rehash the story for you. If you like psychological reads that lean more to horror then this could be the story for you. I’m really looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Ok, let me start with WOW! I received an ARC of Stuart James’ newest thriller Turn The Other Way and I must say he didn’t let me down. His newest novel takes place over the past and present, as well as several character’s storylines. There is a highly regarded doctor whose life and path is changed by an accident. There is a husband and wife that seem to stumble upon a crime in progress during traffic. And a daughter looking for her missing parents. How are they connected? How will this story of revenge end? This story moved well. The characters are strong and well rounded. The suspense, thrilling. I highly recommend this new novel out February 8th.
OMG, Turn The Other Way is one hell of a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. It's a gripping, chilling thriller/horror that holds the reader captive in a vice like grip that's so tight you sometimes find yourself struggling to breath. That's when you actually get an opportunity to remember to breath which is not very often due to the frantic pace, twists and turns and non stop action.
The story flips back and forth between the past and the present and is voiced by a multitude of diverse characters. There's respected surgeon Simon Bairstow whose life falls apart after the death of one of his young patients. Jess and Noah, whose journey home from Jess's parents turns into a living nightmare and Chloe's desperate search for her missing parents. There was characters I liked, disliked, rooted for, changed my mind about and just plain gave me the creeps. There was characters who were not who they appeared to be,betrayals, lies, secrets, decept, gory murders, heart pounding action. This reader's anxiety levels went through the roof a number of times as this edge of your seat story unfolded before my captivated eyes. The horror settings are perfect but not overly described, there's just enough descriptions to set the scene. The too terrified to speak out villagers, dark, sinister country roads, the derelict, secluded farmhouse,oh and the evil, twisted, sinister bad guys and believe me,they are nasty, vicious killers.
This is a well written, absolutely AMAZING book that gives the reader a very bad case of just one more chapter syndrome. I was hooked in from the first page, frantically turning the pages, totally enthralled by the author`s mesmerising storytelling. And that ending,so many books promise twists that you won't see coming and don't deliver on their promise but the ending twist in this one was most definitely shocking and unexpected. I honestly didn't want to put this book down. I would love to watch a film version of this book. How have I not heard about this author before,i can't believe this is his second book and I will definitely be getting hold of a copy of his previous book The House On Rectory Lane.I think Turn The Other Way is worth far more than five stars. I would gladly recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading books written Richard Parker,Mark Edwards,Dean Koontz or Stephen King Very, very good book and highly recommended by little old me.
Many thanks to Sarah Hardy,Stuart James and BOTBSPublicity for a arc of this book in exchange for a honest review and the opportunity to take part in the Blog tour
What a crazy ride this scary book took me on! It is a real twisted, dark, spooky, brilliant, chilling story that reminded me of a great Stephen King story. The then and now format kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing as I navigated all of the twists and turns in this riveting page turner. If your looking for a really good horror/thriller to read, this is it! Great job Author Stuart James!
Review TURN THE OTHER WAY by Stuart James A HEART IN THROAT, NERVE WRACKING, ROLLER COASTER RIDE OF A BOOK! Reminiscent of the style of Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes. I found myself peering out the window into the dark wondering if I was truely alone while reading this awesomely scary read.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Five Stars!
What can I say? It's a cross between Saw and The hills have eyes only better than both together. A must read, one of the best books I've read this year.
Excuse me while I check all windows and doors are bolted. Note to self: never pick up a hitchhiker, never stop at services, never drives the lanes, basically just never trust anyone!! Wowzers this book! After I had read Lorraine’s review over at The Book Review Café, I knew this was a book I had to read. Bloody hell!
It’s true I am speechless, this book was a true horror, it was sadistic, terrifying, and thrilling as I sat there reading with my hand either on my head in shock or biting my finger in fear. I have been on edge reading this, with no idea how this would end. No relief has been given to me at the end, just questions and shocks.
I can’t talk about the story too much, as you really do need to go into this book in the dark. It is one of the most messed up books I have read in such a long time! It lingers with you long after you have read the words “The End” because of the chilling storyline. Some of the story was a little bit unbelievable at times and has left me too many opened ended threads, but it all worked, where the crazy just seems the norm – and that is scary. The more shocking, dramatic and gruesome it got the more it set your teeth on edge. Something straight out of a horror film.
The story is told over a then and now, but through different couples point of view, and I really could not see how everything was linked until it was far too late. The outcome was unexpected and has shot my nerves to pieces.
This is my first outing with Mr James and I am being serious when I say it will not be my last, with a new book coming out that I have to read (like yesterday) and 2 previous books out there already, I am fast going to be a huge fan! The writing is raw, real and shocking, nothing is held back. What you fear is on these pages. The darkness inside a person is laid out to you in black and white, and it is enjoyable, to an extent, to read. I was drawn in straight away to the crazy town even though at 20% into the Turn the other way I really did not have a scooby what was going on but I loved it. I love sitting there apprehensive waiting for something sinister to happen, scaring myself, reading what would be known as urban legends. It was a page turner for me and if I could I would have devoured this in one sitting, however, I think maybe the break did me good!!!!
Even after reading this book (and it’s only been 10 mins) I am still getting chills thinking about what to say about the book. I still feel fraught with the fear of what I have read, even though I know it’s not real and I am actually safe in this house it doesn’t help where your imagination goes. And if this book is anything to go by imagination is a dangerous and dark place!!
I think this is safe to say this is most definitely 100% going to be one of my top picks of the year. You can not read something so unsettling and that will stay with you long after you finish it without putting it there. I am not sure if I should say this but despite everything about this book I did really enjoy it, love might be too strong of a word but it was a book I liked, everything was thrown at me and thank god I made it to the end….not everyone did!
Having read (and loved) Stuart’s previous book ‘The house on Rectory Lane’; I was keen to start his latest one. ‘Turn the other way’ is a dark, psychological thriller with two stories running, one set in the past and the other in the present. The reader is introduced to numerous characters that initially appear to be unconnected. I could see no way in which both stories could come together, but I must have underestimated Stuart’s ability to weave a great tale, as the puzzle pieces just slotted in place. This book is everything that you could ever want in a thriller; it is gripping, fast-paced and with just a touch of gruesome. It makes for some tense reading, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. I believe that part of Stuart’s ability to write such a great story lies in his talent to be so descriptive, you can literally see it in your mind’s eye. The story sent a shiver down my spine on more than one occasion. This book is as great as Stuart is a writer; I devoured three-quarters of it in one day and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Review: This is a deadly game like no other with a plot that will have you shouting at your kindle/book in disbelief, make no mistake about about it. Stuart James has constructed a cleverly interconnected web of characters with a story that is pure evil. There are twists at every corner, the intelligently written tale barely giving you time to recover from the last revelation before you are sent hurtling off another knife edge.
I've read many crime and psychological thriller novels and am rarely shocked, but this author managed to do it twice in one book - with the plot itself, and with the final twist. You're not forgiven Mr James!
Stuart James has published another amazing thriller novel full of suspense! This book gave me the chills and the plot twists were amazing! It will keep you guessing right up til the very end. This is a must read for thriller lovers!
I don't usually read horror, but this book wasn't a typical blood and gore horror story, as the author gives a psychological insight into a myriad of different characters. Stuart James certainly has a way of getting to the heart of a character and conveying their emotions, so I felt I understood what made them all tick, which is a difficult aspect in storytelling to get right. I found myself pulled into the different scenes because of the in-depth description so it had a movie-like feel to it. And whilst initially I wondered what all these different characters had to do with each other, the loose ends pulled together to show the bigger picture which showed great craftmanship in storytelling. In short, not a story for the faint-hearted, but a gripping story which will play on your mind afterwards. Lock all the doors before you read and have a cup of chamomile tea at the ready to calm your nerves.
I have conflicted feelings about this book. One part of me loved it. The idea of it was great. There were lots of surprises. But then there were also a lot of moments I was confused. I think if the writing was structured better this would be a top read for me. No way am I slamming this book. If you like stories that make your heart beat fast then this is a good read. I did have moments where I couldn't turn the page fast enough. But there were also times I wondered if it would go anywhere. With this story I suggest sticking with it. The characters will frustrate you with their choices but you will find yourself rooting for them. Then when so much is exposed near the end you'll be in shock. The ending may even shock you.
Awesome book. More of my review later Okay here is my review.
Thank you The Fiction Café-Review and Stuart James for this arc copy. This is the first book I've read by this author and man he keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The book has multiple POVs and past and present chapters. Contains graphic event details. READ THIS BOOK NOW! Stuart James’ newest thriller Turn The Other Way is an adrenaline ride with twists and turns along the way. His newest novel takes place over the past and present, as well as over several character story lines. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Thank you Stuart James for the fantastic ride! Can't wait for your next thriller... I am giving this 5 stars!!!! Happy reading.
TURN THE OTHER WAY starts with that age old question of what you would do if you saw someone in trouble? How far would you go? Would you be prepared to go all in and be a hero...or as the title suggests; TURN THE OTHER WAY?
Switching between the past and present, we learn not only how each of the victims play their part, but also how they fit into the bigger picture. A picture which is pretty frigging frightening when you get to the crux of the story! The pacing of the story kept me on my toes and I was kept guessing as to what would happen next.
This is one of those books that has you questioning everything around you! Watch your back.........
Gripped from the first couple chapters, I could not stop thinking about the characters or what would happen next. I had this obsessive need to keep reading. That is the sign of a fantastic book!! I loved the alternating chapters between past and present and how eventually the twists came and things started to make sense, or sometimes jut made you question more! I did not see that ending come and am totally amazed!! I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone!!!
Truly one of the best psychological thrillers I have read. This book has so many twists and turns making me hold my breath from the first thump thump thump from the white van in till the very end. The characters are frightening and the victims had me on the edge of my seat. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Thank you Stuart James for this fantastic ride from beginning to end!!! Was this all about revenge? You be the judge. Can't wait for his next thriller...
