Rune Equations

Rate this book
(From the back cover:) An introductory study into the runes for those who wish to use them for divination and assessment. Though the runes emerged in the Early Medieval Period, they were the expression of even more ancient worldviews and traditions. Of these, only the barest bones exist today. But the runes become enlivened in a mind that pays attention to their possibilities. Like all other systems of symbolic language, there is a fractal-like unfolding that can occur. The universe is a surprising place, and the runes are the whispers of the universe.

This is a very informative book which is clear and easy to understand. The background information explaining the logic and meanings conveyed by which directions the lines the runes are created from makes it much easier to remember and understand the runes. There is also a lot of helpful description giving images to associate with each rune's shape to aid in remembering them. This book includes the full set of English runes in edition to covering the more commonly distributed Elder and Younger Futhark. It also goes beyond just being a dictionary of the rune meanings or how-to-read-runes guide and explains how to pronounce them and includes mediation images for each rune. This is a thoughtfully prepared work and valuable resource for anyone interested in learningabout runes and divination.

Last paragraph:

In conclusion, through the runes emerged in the Early Medieval Period they were the expression of even more ancient worldviews and traditions. Of these, only the barest bones exist today. Runes should not be seen as a relict of a past age. Every person who studies and uses the runes can add to the knowledge and develop new, practical ways to keep them relevant. The more you delve into the runes, the more they will reveal. Read as much as you can. not everything will be helpful to you, but the runes become enlivened in a mind that pays attention to possibilities. Like all systems of symbolic language, there is a fractal unfolding that occurs. The universe is a surprising place, and the runes are the whispers of the universe.

Lilly works with the full Anglo-Saxon rune row here, using methods that aren't strongly connected to the rune poems. Usually I find that problematic, but Lilly's honest about his methods and the tone of the book is helpful and informative. It's surely a flawed text, but I enjoyed reading it.

This is the best book I have found to date on the Anglo-Saxon Runes. I am already planning on buying a second copy just in case. If you have any desire to learn the Angl0-Saxon/Northumbrian/ English Runes than this is the book. I am already starting the "sequel".
