If you like heart stopping Historical fiction… you will be gripping the chair until you know they made it! Leaving a tragic past behind, John set out on an adventure to the New World. Passionately in love with his new wife, and looking forward to a new start as they boarded the ship to Jamestown, nothing could have prepared them for the tragedy that was to come. On a tumultuous sea where rivalries, politics and racial discrimination were rife, John’s beautiful lover, to protect a closely guarded secret, makes a tragic error of judgement. It would change everything.Their lives were on the line. Even if they were lucky enough to survive the ferocious hurricane, could they survive the consequences of her actions?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this historical novel that so deftly described the ocean voyages of the ships going to the new world. Separated by a violent and tempestuous storm, forcing those in charge to release a small ship loaded with beautiful horses and their caretaker to go down , drowning all, the Tempest labored on until it reached Bermuda. The lives of the wealthy and well stationed intermingled with the lives of the poor and common fighting together to survive.
I never cared about history when I was young but now I can't get enough. Although this was a work of fiction, it makes you think about what if I were there! Although I remember from somewhere that America was settled as a land to worship God and with values based on scripture, I didn't realize that meant that they were escaping the Church of England, or the Catholic church. The book was truly interesting from beginning to end.
I knew of this voyage due to ancestor connections and Shakespeare, but Sue Wright brings the people to life with her well researched stories. I really appreciate her vision of the past.
This novel was for the most part intresting. I had read a sequel first. I think that may have helped. For those that like somewhat historical fiction, you will enjoy the read.
