What happened in the Whiteshell Forest near Falcon Lake on May 20, 1967? For the first time in 50 years, the many facets of this astonishing tale finally come together. Noted UFO researcher Chris Rutkowski opens his vault of documents and images, gathered over several decades of inquiry, and presents a comprehensive picture of what became the most investigated UFO case in Canadian History. Stan Michalak, son of the man at the centre of this story, offers an inside perspective of what was happening in the Michalak home immediately following his father's extraordinary encounter. Join him as he eavesdrops on the daily struggles of his family while they deal with his father's injuries and the endless stream of investigators and media. Released after years of planning, this once-in-a-lifetime book describes every aspect of what happened “when they appeared.”
When They Appeared: Falcon Lake 1967: The Inside Story Of A Close Encounter by Stan Michalak & Chris Rutkowski (001.942 M5822)
On May 19, 1967, Stephen Michalak was prospecting near Falcon Lake in Manitoba, Canada. During this outing, Mr. Michalak, a Polish immigrant, claims to have approached a landed flying saucer. While trying to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants, Mr. Michalak was severely burned by exhaust fumes when the vehicle suddenly rotated before rising into the air. The first part of the book is the original pamphlet published years ago by Stephen Michalak. The second part of the book is written by Mr. Michalak’s son, detailing his memory of the after-effects of the encounter. “They,” in the title, refers to the stream of Canadian Air Force, police, media, skeptics and true believers that flowed into, sometimes unwelcome, the Michalak home following the strange event. The last part, written by Mr. Rutkowski, examines documents from the time period concerning the case. The book is enjoyable to read and the case is better documented than the Roswell incident. Although some believe Stephen encountered an alien space ship, Mr. Michalak and his family suspect he encountered a secret government aircraft, perhaps an advanced version of the Avrocar.
In 1967 near Winnipeg, a Polish immigrant is prospecting alone in the woods. He sees two UFOs and one of them lands. He approaches and hears indistinct voices and sees an opening. He sticks his head in and the vehicle ascends, burning his clothes as it leaves. He becomes very ill and lives the rest of his life with odd symptoms like strangely patterned rashes and fatigue. The Canadian Mounties investigate and after many failures, the witnesses finds the site again. They find melted pure silver and his burned clothes and landing evidence. Slightly higher radiation is detected.
The book is a collection of writings from the witnesses relatively soon after the event, from his adult son decades later, and a UFO investigator who worked with the son. The son recalls the reaction of his family and the media attention his father received. The UFO investigator talks more about the case. Meh. The initial account from the father (like 15% of the book) was interesting, the rest felt a bit tedious and unnecessary.
