Erster Freund, erster Kuss, erstes Mal …
While I do like have diverse plots and forms of yuri manga being translated into English, this book didn't quite work for me. Mostly this is because there just didn't seem to be any real chemistry between Yuma and Hotaru - I actually want Yuma to end up with her boyfriend. In part this is because he's not sexually assaulting her the way Hotaru is and I really prefer consensual romance, but mostly it's due to the fact that the yuri plot between the two girls feels forced in more ways than one.
Apparently the mangaka is a woman which is really surprising considering I would have assumed it was written by a man who had never kissed a girl before (or judging by the weird boob physics on the cover, apparently never seen one.)
If you like hentai... well... that's basically what this is. All the spoilers from here on out but just know that there is like no story here anyways. Just porn.
The characters are absurd. MC is just an object for everyone to sexually assault (even Takeda, who would otherwise be kind of sweet except for how he kind of forces himself on her for their first kiss because that's "what boyfriends and girlfriends do.") Other girl (sorry can't be bothered to remember names of two dimensional characters) assaults and molests MC at every turn, even when MC says "no I don't want this." And then she has the gall to get upset when MC up and slaps her across the face because she's sexually assaulting MC for the gazillionth time (to say nothing of the gem that was "you play sports and you're bigger and stronger than me so if you really didn't want this then you would have pushed me away." Oh wait I said it. And OH WAIT SHE DID PUSH YOU AWAY YOU LITTLE BITCH.) I thought (based on the description) that this would be more of a CONSENSUAL sexy love story but it was very much none of that at all.
I mean I really wanted more compulsively readable trash while I wait for my Amazon order of the next few volumes of Citrus to come in but I didn't expect such a heavy dollop of rape culture with my yuri tbh. I do not ship any of this at all and mostly I want to scrub this whole experience from my mind. This was just awkward and uncomfortable and kind of boring but mostly made me angry.
edit: I just want to tack more onto that "if you didn't want this you would have resisted." Funny story (not funny) but often when women are sexually assaulted their body freezes up as a defense mechanism. You literally will lose control of your body and be unable to resist because of all the stress chemicals that are flooding your brain's ability to make logical decisions. (Here's an article about that: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/g...) It makes me so unbelievably upset to see lines like this in "romances," especially ones where the MC has made it so abundantly clear that she is uncomfortable and doesn't want what is being done to her. It's frustrating and saddening to me especially when women write these kinds of scenes and try to pass them off as sexy.
I was in a yuri drought about 3 years ago and I remember a bunch of people recommending this to me. I had no idea what "NTR" stood for and now I know that it stands for "netorare" (netto-rah-reh) which is the kink of infidelity/adultery. That's pretty much it. These characters are cheating on their boyfriends and there is a huge power imbalance. One character assaults, rapes, and completely disrespects the other girl and...I don't know. I don't know how this got greenlit. It's extremely problematic and triggering. I'm also really upset to find out that this was written and drawn by an Asian woman like damn. Too many of us in this genre really hate ourselves. At the end of the day, like what you like—the world is nuanced and everyone has their own experiences. But also be careful because it's dangerous to put this kinda shit on a higher pedestal than yuri that actually illustrates healthy relationships.
So I heard this one was getting an anime, so I had to check it out. It is something I at times do when I am interested in an upcoming anime. Check out the manga. :P
I was a bit worried about this one, since there is cheating. And I am not a girl who likes that kind of thing. However, after reading, I am still pissed at the two girls (and also at someone later on who finds out about them but apparently keeps it a secret, but probably won't do that freely), but I can't stop reading. I am just hoping for them to be honest. For them to tell someone. For the MC to tell her boyfriend. Plus the story is really engaging, the yuri scenes are perfectly done (though I am not sure how I feel about Hotaru forcing herself on Yuuma). So I just have to keep reading.
As soon as I am done with this review I will head back to the manga and read the next volume. I am quite curious if Yuuma and her boyfriend will have sex, or if she will finally realize that she might not be interested in boys (sorry, there are just too many hints to that, and I hope the girl will realise why she never really cared about boys that much, why she just sees Takeda as friend, and not much more, plus she clearly said a few times during the yuri stuff that this feels better, different, more thrilling, softer). I do feel for Yuuma. Yes, she isn't doing the exact right thing, but I can also see she is very confused about her feelings. She is thinking it isn't right to be with a girl. That it shouldn't feel so good, that she shouldn't be so happy when Hotaru touches her. So I am just cheering for this girl to get her feelings on the rails and figure things out.
Hotaru is quite the manipulative girl, and I wonder if she has always been like this, or if it is because of other reasons. She is currently in a not so good relationship. At least I would call it that, the boyfriend she is with is pretty much all for the sex, but she doesn't always want to. At one point the guy even got pissed off at her. :| :|
I quite feel sorry for the boyfriend. :( He doesn't deserve this at all.
There is quite a bit of ecchi scenes, but nothing too graphic (no real details).
The art is fabulous though. I love how the characters, especially the girls, are drawn.
All in all, I just want to read on to see what will happen. I may give up after the second volume if nothing really changes, even if I want to read on, I just can't handle this cheating business too much.
Really all you need to know here is that "NTR" is Japanese slang for "cucking" (as all the cool fascists are calling it). Specifically it refers to pornographic and semi-pornographic stories in which a guy has his girlfriend seduced by another guy (or, in this case, a girl), typically while he's forced to watch.
The problem with this manga is that the dynamic between the two girls doesn’t feel very consensual, at least not yet, and that provides an icky feeling while reading...
This story winds up being a little uncomfortable, because most of the relationship between the two main characters has been reduced to one sexually molesting the other; and not in an anime goofball way. It gives the story a kind-of heaviness that sets is apart from typical yuri stories, which usually start with an emotional connection—instead, this one seems mostly physical, with the aggressor constantly finding extremely lame excuses to kiss and fondle her friend, while that friend wrestles with her behavior, and wonders why she doesn't just push her away.
Both the girls in the story have boyfriends, and their relationships with them dwell a lot on the physical as well. In essence, our characters come off mostly as a bunch of hormonal teenagers; they're not thinking very deeply, instead just reacting to each other and their own impulses.
As a result, the relationships between the two girls, and between the girls and their boyfriends, have no gravitas. The girls are introduced from the get-go as the standard "childhood friends." The boys are just idiot teenage boys, although the more sympathetic of the two has a fuddling innocence to him that makes him a little endearing.
However, the aggressor girl is presented mysteriously enough, with so little explained motivation, that she does draw interest. The story is told mostly from the perspective of her target, and while we see that girl's struggles with how to respond, the motivations and intentions of her friend are out of reach to us. That extra shadow makes the story a bit darker still, but also makes that character the most interesting.
The upshot is this is much more sexually aggressive (and explicit) than everyone's yuri standard-bearers Citrus or Girl Friends; that doesn't make it some psychologically torturous Shuzo Oshimi outing, but it will likely not leave the reader feeling as warm and fuzzy as those titles do. Still, mostly because of the mysterious motivations of the one character, I am anxiously awaiting the next volume, to see how this story develops.
I actually liked this yuri but I personally preferred Citrus. It's cute but I'm not actually a fan of the non-consensual romance. It's one of those mangas where a straight girl magically becomes gay, I don't know either but that happens in yaoi too. The art is above average and pretty much amazing for a yuri manga though but I can't say much for the characters here.
I don't really relate to this manga, it's smutty ( and cute ) but more of a fantasy type of thing. I'm still going to continue reading it though.
No love story here! Misleading synopsis promises a far better plot than you actually get.
The synopsis on the back of the book states two straight couples go on a double date and the girls "find themselves more attracted to each other than to their boyfriends." That's just a blatant lie. The book actually begins after the implied double date, during which one girl molested the other. In fact, the entire book is about the unwanted advances of one girl toward the other, resulting in rape. Afterward, the assailant keeps trying to convince the victim she enjoyed it; meanwhile, the victim keeps trying to distance herself from her supposed best friend so she can just enjoy time with her boyfriend. She is clearly creeped out throughout the entire book and only shows concern for her attacker when she discovers the other girl's boyfriend is forcing her to have sex. (But she's doing the same thing to HER, so why the pity?)
I have looked at this manga several times and hesitated to pick it up because of the derogatory "trap" in the title. The bookstore had a buy 1, get one 50% off on manga today, so I finally relented and bought the first two volumes. I am taking them back!
THE LESBIAN STORY OF FIRST TIME THEY FALL IN LOVE. BOYFRIENDS AND GIRLFRIENDS WHEN TWO CHILDHOOD BEST FRIENDS FALLING IN LOVE.
THIS MY FIRST TIME READING STORY ABOUT LESBIANS. I AM VERY SURPRISE THAT I TAKEN BY THIS TYPE. I NORMALLY READ DRAMA, SCI-FI, SLICE OF LIFE, SUPERNATURLLY AND A FEW MORE. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL PAY DAY SO I CAN GET THIS WHOLE LOT ON THIS STORY. MY FIRST LESBIAN STORY AND WANT MORE!!!
This is a rather unconventional yuri manga about two high school girls who are childhood friends, each of them already having a boyfriend. As the author mentions in the afterword, describing it as a “messy daytime soap opera,” the story goes full throttle right from the beginning. Since this is only volume one, it’s hard to judge the overall direction yet, but the artwork is clean and appealing, and I’m genuinely curious to see how the story will unfold.
Ehh. So. The back of this book compares it to Citrus but I feel like that comparison is really unfair. Citrus is a sweet and character driven story with a touch of tawdriness. NTR is almost all tawdriness with a touch of sweet and no understandable character development.
When I heard this story involved cheating, I jumped in. I don't condone it in real life, but I'm a sucker for drama, so I was expecting a lot of contradictory feelings, guilt, angst galore!
Well, there wasn't. Much.
Certainly not in the amounts I was hoping for.
First, it's hard to see the whole situation as believable. And not because it's that impossible. In fact, the author had a pretty great premise and somehow managed to blow it.
You see, I had, in my life, this one friend who in turn had a group of friends I didn't really get along with. I had a crush on another friend who was in a relationship, though I never acted on it for moral reasons. And I don't think I'm special. Hotaru's situation is those two situations rolled into one, so it is relatable, probably for more than a few people.
Yuma, on the other hand, gets stuck in a difficult position. A person who she's supposed to deeply love (as best friends do), now has feelings for her that she doesn't reciprocate. Or does, but isn't ready to admit it. And that leaves her with few options, all of them bad. Does she cut her best friend out of her life? Does she outright reject her, thus hurting her? Does she sacrifice her relationship with her boyfriend to go be with her, even though she doesn't think she feels that way about her?
No matter what she does, she's in the process of losing her best friend as such. It can't not be big deal. She's shocked, confused, too much is at stake, and so she ends up, understandably, half-doing all of the above, which results in her doing nothing in reality. One would hope she matures along the way and gets proactive, but for a set-up, this is an alright state of mind to begin the story.
As you see, the whole... concept was well thought of and viable, with lots of potential for drama. It makes for a good back-blurb, which is what got me here. But in that potential it ends. The actual delivery leaves much to be desired.
Because you see, while the situation of the characters is relatable, the characters themselves, for the most part, are not. As another reviewer said, Yuma and Hotaru don't seem to have any kind of chemistry, and their whole relationship, though plausible at its most basic level, seems forced.
The author missed a lot of opportunities to play up the drama of Yuma's relationship with her best friend changing, and instead made her look like a huge pushover for letting things happen.
A lot of potential was wasted. It could have been handled much better, this same story, with the protag in the same passive role, if only we'd gotten more focus on her inner conflict.
But no, what we got was 200+ pages of fan-service (that wasn't even good fan-service) getting on the way of the plot. It looked as if the author was just looking for excuses to get the girls semi-alone so Hotaru could harass Yuma in proximity to her boyfriend, and while I get the fetishist potential for that, I wasn't emotionally invested enough for it to be hot. What I'm trying to say is, even for people who gets off on that kind of thing, it didn't work, because the idea was there, but it was so shallow it made zero impact.
It's like going to watch porn, and instead of people fucking, you got a guy come on screen and start telling you "and there's this girl, and she gets a package from this hunky mailman, and she doesn't have anything to tip him with, so..."
I'm not opposed to porn for its own sake, but this had too much drama for erotica, and too much "erotica" for drama. If the author had waited and developed the characters a bit more while letting the stakes rise, it would have been much hotter when something actually happened. As is, it stands in some kind of middle-ground that manages to miss every button in an attempt to push all of them at the same time.
In summary, you know a yuri manga is doing something wrong when you're more invested in the girls' boyfriends than in them.
Will give the second volume a chance, but I don't know if I'll stick around.
This year has been a year of illness for me, so I've been diving again and again into what I suspect will be comfortable reads, or at least reads that require very little brain power. After reading Naoko Kodama's I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up, I knew Kodama had chops as a storyteller, and, going in, I knew she used those powers for a longer, more twisted story in NTR. Basically titled "Cheater Trap," NTR is not a happy, fluffy tale.
When kind and popular basketball star Takeda asks his fellow basketball star Yuma out, she's so startled she says yes, without examining her own feelings. Immediately afterwards, she runs to her best friend, Hotaru, for dating advice. Yuma is especially worried about how to become physically intimate with a significant other. With her beautiful enigmatic smile, Hotaru tells Yuma not to worry: Yuma can "practice" intimacy with her. This of course gets way out of hand, with Hotaru and her beard boyfriend Fujiwara accompanying Takeda and Yuma everywhere, and Yuma and Hotaru constantly excusing themselves to go make out in secret.
This whole manga is a series of melodramatic sexcapades that any 2000s' American TV show would happily air. Similar to Citrus, there's an enormous dollop of internalized homophobia, misogyny, sexual assault, underage sex work, and abuse/neglect. No one knows how to Google anything, not even "how do I know if I'm a lesbian." Eventually, after a long slog of volumes, Yuma comes to her senses and figures things out, like how lesbian is a valid identity, woman-on-woman intimacy is indeed intimacy, and Hotaru needs healing. One way this series could improve is if Kodama focused on the Hotaru and Yuma's healing journey more, after all these chapters of nonsense.
The trashy romance feels odder because I know Kodama can do better. She's written the characters to be ignorant, homophobic, and abusive on purpose. She wrote all these harmful cliches on purpose. The art is cute, but full of fan service and weird boob physics. This is not a yuri series for beginners, or anyone looking to expand their understanding of what lesbian relationships and culture are like. My sick, addled head was hooked on these dumb teenage antics, and that's all they are. Dumb teenage antics in comic form.
Soft core smut featuring static characters with NO feeling...well aside from concerning about/wanting to get laid. I think manga is published a chapter at a time and I believe this title’s purpose is to give the reader a soft core makeout sesh with some mild nudity and some heavy petting.
I mentioned static characters above...there are four main characters who show no growth in this volume and they’re all flawed with no really redeeming qualities.
Yuma, the main protagonist, is frequently cheating on her boyfriend all the while leading her friend on by fooling around with her. If she really romantically cares for her it’s not evident. She seems to legitimately romantically care for her boyfriend... but is constantly cheating on him with her childhood friend as I mentioned prior leading her on.
Hotaru, frequently forces herself on Yuma playing it off by “preparing” her for her boyfriend. That’s messed up and cruel.
The boyfriends...typical cis heterosexual teenage dudes wanting to get laid. One of them said something caring in the beginning of this volume that began to win me over...but he eventually shows his true self...horny manipulative boyfriend trying to get laid.
I’m disappointed as this publisher has put out some very good Yuri titles with queer characters that build a positive friendship that eventually evolves into a healthy relationship. As a queer, I enjoy these stories! NTR is DEFINITELY not this! This title appears to be made for horny cis heterosexual dudes. I was legitimately shocked to see in the afterword that the creator is a woman.
However... the author states in the afterword that her original idea for the series was about following the daily life of an adult married lesbian couple. I think she should of went with that story.
NTR: Netsuzou Trap delivers on its title but ultimately fails to form human characters that would drive the "netsuzou" or, roughly translated, "false" or "fabricated" trap core to the yuri romance meant to be center. Instead of finding queer identity as the moment of discovery, NTR presupposes queer attraction (a positive) but frames it as both a social shame and inherently at a power imbalance.
The admission of "sexual harassment" yet continued attraction toward the end of the volume speaks to a fetishization of girls' love, rather than probing into the more troublesome aspect of why the dominant character acts in such a manner or how this comes as a surprise despite growing up together.
I'm sure these topics will come up - they are beyond hinted at - yet here it feels like a Shuzo Oshimi rough draft that was salvaged for titillation. I do think the series can grow, but this is not a great start.
Ugh, school kids. At least they're doing the honorable thing by trying to lose their virginity in a not so disgusting way. As expected, the story is stretched to fill volumes when it could be told in a few chapters. I guess the characters' feelings have to be explored at leasure or the mangaka won't get paid.
Yuma and Hotaru have been friends since childhood. Now it's time to get laid, cause everybody's doin' it. Hotaru is the more experienced of the two, so she encourages Yuma to cash in her V-card. She does it in a most peculiar way - by showing her how to kiss and fondle body parts. I too agree that 'show' is better than 'tell', but Yuma is all flustered about it. At first anyway. She can't deny the feelings going through her body. Yuma wants to focus on her relationship with her boyfriend, but being that they're both virgins, it's going to take a while until we see some action.
The art is really pretty and it's very sensual (almost feel it should be M rating, not OT). I have some issues with Hotaru's treatment of Yuma, though I do feel some of it is somehow a reaction to how her experiences with guys have been. It's constantly obvious with her reactions to Fujwara that she isn't actually as consenting as he seems to think. Takeda seems like a sweet guy, a little dopey, and I wouldn't be surprised if he finds out about Hotaru and Yuma and it turns ugly. Mixed feelings on having purchased it, but also interested in seeing development of characters and relationships.
So the synopsis is promising but it fell so short I actually ended up hating this manga. I hate it so much I’m not even sure I want to read the second one. I like Yuma, she feels relatable and normal.... Hotaru on the other hand comes off as manipulative and frankly quite horrible. Even when Hotaru isn’t pushing the line in ways that are beyond okay and is just being a “friend” she’s still a really shitty friend and pushes Yuma to hook up and get to screwing... it’s really not what I was hoping it would be like at all.
