I was fully invested in the storyline of this volume!

I'm glad a friend gave me a lot of warnings about the content before I went in so I was prepared. There's a lot of dubious and terrible stuff going on but I need to know how it all pans out!

Review for vol. 2: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I had waited a whole freaking year for this new volume of Caste Heaven damn it and it's just as chilling, scandalous and freaking crazy as the first two volumes!

Again we are in this highschool which has a strange secret hierarchy game going on among students, but this time the story focus on a side pairing instead of the protagonists (who are in a master/plaything relationship in this hierarchy game).

The side pairing in question involves the seme's older half-brother, who is a Straight-As Model Student, and this really crazy Bad Boy (rumored to be from a yakuza family). Although I don't really like how the Model Student would fall for the Bad Boy that quickly, still I am entirely intrigued by how their relationship is constructed and played out and how the Model Student's personality and background works to form this character and gives reason to his action and choices.

As to the really crazy Bad Boy, we don't know so much about his backstory but...I believe he is somewhat mentally ill and he is trying to find someone who can understand him and his extreme and scary worldview? Anyway, when the guy is ready to jump off a building to get his boyfriend's earring back, I'm smitten.

I also like how this relationship ends .

Better still, we get a small development from the main pairing (the seme meeting the uke's mother in school!) and there are hints that the secret game among students is about to take a darker, scarier turn soon, I'm totally looking forward for the next volume.

Volume 3 focused on the relationship between Tatsumi and Senzaki. Of all the characters in this manga I identify most with Tatsumi. He's trapped in a subservient role that he'd never have chosen for himself. Servant to his father's unfair demands, servant to his younger brother's whims (in that he has to keep tabs on him and sort out or fix any of his screw ups...for the sake of the family's name, of course), servant to his mother's fragile emotional state and shortcomings, and servant to the rules of his class's caste game. Being his father's illegitimate child he was constantly threatened with disownment and the withdrawal of funds needed to take care of his mother.

He was deeply unhappy and constantly referred to himself as wearing a mask that hid his true self. A self that he believed at some point fused with that mask so much that he became this strange duality of a person who hates his life with a passion but could never bring himself to leave it. It's no wonder he was attracted to someone like Senzaki, who is the total opposite of him. He was unapologetically himself and didn't care about following anyone else's rules.

Senzaki was a crazy mf but he loved Tatsumi, and he wanted Tatsumi to love him back with the same reckless abandonment that he had. Unfortunately, that wasn't who Tatsumi was and, even if he was, Senzaki was just too unpredictable. He's love was too intense and at times downright scary. He fundamentally believed that if the two of them loved each other enough , if they got rid of all obstacles to their love, they would somehow reach this state of nirvana that would make all worldly problems go away. This goes totally against how Tatsumi thinks and in the end I don't believe that they would have worked out. If Senzaki wasn't so crazy he could have been the perfect support that Tatsumi desperately needed but in the end he only wanted a version of Tatsumi that never really exist. It was really kind of depressing.

Now, that side story?! All I can say is WOW, I was NOT expecting that. Is it me or are (almost) all the students in that school evil?

Espero.

I find the characters to be quite one dimensional and have trouble differentiating between voices. The story has taken a backseat which I don't seem to mind as I'm reading the story primarily for the romance.

I feel so bad for Tatsumi in this volume. His family is so controlling that he couldn’t even feel free enough to let go and be fully with Senzaki. Constantly having to be Karino’s scapegoat can’t be easy either. When are any of these boys gonna catch a break?

3.75 stars. Things are getting intense and I don’t know where the heck this is going. I think it was a Segway volume now that we are familiar with the characters. New caste is coming!

CW: Sexual Assault, Abuse, Psychological torture, Underage characters, Mental abuse

This series is not for the faint of heart. I can't help much appreciate the amazing art and story telling for this series. This volume focuses on two very different characters. One is a delinquent would be yakuza kid, and the other is a preppy rich boy with a pain fetish. Their relationship is toxic and utterly twisted but so compelling.
I like to think of this series as existing in an alternate universe. It's not in our world. Please, head the content warnings for this one. Ogawa sensei is still a master of their craft and I will continue to read and support this series.

A typical Ogawa Chise style, this is Karino's elder half brother's story with kinda disturbing bdsm and equally disturbing MC's, but it's OC...so expected🤓.

Play the caste game with this array of colorfully tormented characters… in Caste Heaven volume three.

I did say in the previous volume that I wanted to see more Tatsumi and Senzaki… I hadn’t expected to receive a full and thorough story.
Deep as always, Ogawa’s story she wrote for these two cuts deep and somewhat personal. These two may not have known each other well, but they were still just what the other needed, at least a part of each other was. Even after breaking up, their love continues to burn fiercely for each other. I know that Tatsumi welcomes Senzaki’s violence and anger, because as he’d stated before, he knows everything Senzaki gives is an act of his love. Everything. And Tatsumi wants nothing more than for someone to love him at his worst, his best, his medium.
Sometimes we are forced to make choices in life— very hard choices that make us feel like it’s just unfair, like we shouldn’t have to choose. And yet we have to, even not choosing is a choice made for us…by us.
And it’s true that neither versions of Tatsumi are his true self, but they’re both undeniably him, and he must face the consequences and live his life.
The ending may seem sad for these two, but I don’t think it is. Simply twisted. What’s even more twisted was Yukari and Yatori’s story though… Yikes. I don’t even want to talk about them.

Overall, this caste game is so stupid. It really is. And yet, an outsider (Senzaki) has shone some light on it. This caste game is not something any of them will escape, not even after graduation. Living in a society, especially an oppressive one like Japan, is a caste game. These roles they all have to play will persist for their whole lives, if not different roles. Only the lucky ones will ever get to truly be themselves; but I do hope that Kuze, Atsumu, and Azusa get to be themselves. Perhaps even Karino, after finding himself. Speaking of which, this chapter with Azusa’s mother does show us that Azusa and Karino have deep feelings of esteem for each other. I don’t know if I’d call it love, but it’s something love could sometimes be mistaken for. I’d like to see them happy; I feel as though they really could be.
It’s possible that Karino does love Azusa as best as he knows how; but his own inner turmoil is too much, and he makes Azusa suffer for it (in addition to playing his role).

Story 4,4/5
Emotionen 3,6/5
Charaktere 4,6/5
Zeichenstil 4,0/5
Lesegefühl 4,0/5
Gesamt 4,0/5

Review for volume 1-5

Caste Heaven is appallingly cruel and tasteless. It could have been an interesting read about social hierarchy at school and bullying, but any hint of a good story this might have possessed was drowned out in the way it is delivered. This takes place in a high school where all students participate in a caste game: everyone is assigned a card that marks their social status and the lower you are the more you get bullied. Bullying, though, is an understatement - there are multiple rape scenes per chapter within the first volume alone.

The actual story takes a complete backseat and is ultimately just a means to an end for characters to have sex, a lot of which is at the very least borderline rape. Apart from the fact that this entire game is completely messed up and unrealistic, I found it very hard to stomach and am baffled that people actually enjoy this. I would have dropped this after the first two chapters had I not already owned the volumes. If nothing else, I can say that rather than improving, Caste Heaven stays true to its themes and only introduces new oddly-matched couples - why is it that non of these characters are even remotely sane? I'm getting rid of this - I don't care how it ends and I don't recommend it. I shall end this the way it started: this manga is nothing short of cruel and in poor taste.

So, Senzaki is crazy confirmed. But I love that. "He's a little insane too, but I find that unbearably cute". Crazies in yaoi just have a different flavour. Make Hunter x Hunter a yaoi, no one would care. jk.

Can we all say a group prayer for Tatsumi's nipples. He deserves it. His nipples can't be human, the trauma they've endured without infection (piercing wise) is insane. Let alone all the pinching and biting they've endured jesus.
I just simp for his happiness in general like "all I ever wanted was for someone to accept me, even if I wasn't a good boy" MY POOR STUDIOUS BOI. And I do realise Senzaki is literally crazy giving out non-consensual nipple piercings and being toxic asf but their combo was perfect.

"SCREW THAT AND SCREW THEM. I DONT NEED IDIOTS TO UNDERSTAND ME" fckn yes Azusa live your girl boss, gatekeep, gaslight fantasy.

AGAIN. Pulling out the I HAD A PET ONCE WHEN I WAS A KID shit. You just know. Karino having a dog as a child + yaoi context = Azusa GET ON YOUR KNEES YOUR MY DOG NOW GOOD BOI WOOF WOOF FOR DADDY.
"You couldn't pay me to pity him. It's condescending" at least there's some respect there? It has shippable potential.

Bruh okay, that twink guy at the end is so evil. What Yatori did to him was totally fcked, but like give me more mommy Ogawa pls.

I'm loving this series more than I thought would. It's clear now the theme of this work is deception snd being true to one's self. As Ogawa presents the differing stories between couples who are all in roles they are put to play on by society even if they don't want to. Each has their own facade up, hiding their true natures and/or how they truly feel to make it through or achieve what they desire. It's evident in the Senzaki/Tatsumi storyline, which I knew from stating would not end well. After all one has shed his societal burdens and the other is still trapped. I'm really sad that this relationship won't be revisited, but I'm hoping we'll get more of them after the series has wrapped up. As their extremely volatile love was truly amazingly drawn and written. I just hope that Tatsumi finds some happiness in the end.
I'm incredibly excited to see how the relationship between Azusa & Karino develops in the next volume, but also scared as it's the last volume released in English that I've got and I'll have to wait till the next two are released to find out what would happen next.

Tatsumi and Senzaki are so cute! I don't mean to gush, but this was so fantastic. Their relationship, if a bit kinky, was adorable. Unlike the previous two installations (which were a bit rapey), this one accessed what it was to wear a mask and how we decided what we do and who we do it as. Tatsumi changes because of Senzaki and then wonders which "him" is the real one. But identity is all about change and isn't static. Yes, we may linger in a comfortable personality (a mask, a performance), but we are always adding and subtracting as we see traits that we like or dislike. This may be a bit too deep of a dive, but I like that it made me thinking about Identity formation.

Tw: dubious consent, non consent, bullying, underage sexuality, piercing, unhealthy relationships

This is very one note, I am honestly surprised this has as many volumes as it has and am happy to get off the train here. This volume has one thing going for it - the way the relationship “concludes” is engaging enough that I almost want to see where it goes, but then I’d have to wade into another volume of this and I’d rather have a fourth eye surgery.

At least they gave me Valium for that.

Such an intriguing manga! The relationships are so complex and everyone has their own issues they are dealing with. This couples dynamic was quite intense! I appreciate the summary the author provided as to why they probably wouldn’t work out. It seems that everyone has their own ulterior motives! Karino’s relationship with Azusa is quite intense. Looking forward to volume 4!

Senzaki/Tatsumi is the best part, and it was a short relationship in the series, but I feel that so far, its the one that has the most impact as a reader.
It's a side couple that only lasts for majority of this volume, but the idea with this couple and perspective is quite strong, also the couple with the best smut so far.

This literally was my absolute favorite couple. I really really really want them to have another story. I know that there is a total of eight books of this series. I’m considering this is book 3 I’m hoping to have an opportunity to finish their story because I was rooting for them. That was my couple.

I really liked Tatsumi's storyline. I feel so bad for him, poor guy is being crushed under the weight of the roles others want him to fulfill.
At first I thought it would've been good if he left with Senzaki but now I think that would've just put him in yet another role to fulfill. I hope he gets to let go and just be him at some point.

The side couple here was so self-destructive but so so good. I'm also quite happy we saw more of the main couple.
I love the kinks, and smut.
There is a tease of the game taking a more drastic turn, cannot wait... though I'm also scared.

And the crazy and messy continued to happen.
Boy, this series is so messed up, so effed up, so freaking twisted.
And I am not even complaining.
I love where the story line is going.
Love how new characters are developing.
Yatori and Yukari are another addition to this messed up soup.

Enjoy!
