Welcome to Cedar Falls… I thought the sign seemed a little too welcoming, but when you get the call to move from the goddess herself, you don’t get to be picky. I just wasn’t expecting my new home to be so rustic and…down on its luck. But, when you’re a witch, life can get pretty interesting…and dangerous. Especially when someone is killing the local coven. At least the chief of police is pretty hot, when he’s not accusing me of being the murderer. Cedar Falls seems to have no shortage of hot men. With so many stunning men, why choose just one? Sorry, Chief. Let’s just hope I don’t get too distracted before I find the murderer, open my new bookstore, and help Cedar Falls become what it was meant to be… First Moon is an adult novel intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic language and sexual situations. 18+ readers only! This is a medium burn reverse harem where the girl gets all the guys. Why Choose?

I liked the plot and the idea of a 100 year old witch but the heroine was inconsistent. She acted like an adult and talked like a teenager. The multiple Hs all seemed the same to me, boring and under developed. The writing style TOLD the story via tedious teenage dialogue. Took three attempts to finish, but many other readers loved it and rated it very highly. Just not right for me.

I'm stuck between 2 and 3 stars for this one. It was just a bit 'hit and miss' for me.

On the positive:
- I quite liked the concept of Dot being drawn to a sleepy little town to bring it back together through joining the local coven back together.
- There were glimmers of some good character dynamics.
- Some bits were quite sweet and Dot did some genuinely nice things.

However, I feel like a lot of the writer's intention just fell flat for me, such as. Dot and a lot of the banter was meant to be funny, but I didn't laugh once. It was just a bit juvenile and not particularly funny. For a 99 year old (I don't care how yiund that is for a witch) it just felt sort of incongruous.
The relationships were pretty insta love/lust with no real deep interaction between any of the characters, therefore I wasn't invested in her relationship with either Jimmy or the Chief, although I did like how chilled they both were with her seeing them both.

Dot herself was pretty bizarre as well. She burns a man to death in the first few pages for hitting on her and trying to get her to go for a drink with him and calling her a bitch and acts as if it was no big deal.

Also, the 'who's the killer' plot was pretty flat, and Chief is a pretty crappy policeman, I have to say.

I'm not picking the next up I don't think. It was just all a bit shallow, despite there being some glimmers of good.

So much potential

This book has so much potential, but was ultimately lacking that oomph. There was so much action going on, literally one event after the other, that you hardly had time to connect with the characters.

The problem is, you can't connect with the characters at all. The males, Bill and Jimmy, just seemed so flat to me- well at least Bill had something- an actual backstory and character. Jimmy, however, was more insta-lust and boring. He literally became a piece of the furniture to me. I don't really like insta anything. The FMC, Dot, is over 100 years old, confident and sassy which is a plus- though she talks very young 20s kinda weird to me.

Also it got old fast with all of the unnecessary scenes. Like in between each event you get random scenes like what they want to eat, what they order to eat, who took their order, etc. The dialogue at points were also so confusing that I had to reread parts, who said what.

I was just mainly bored with the book and its plot. Can't say I'll be finishing the series.

This is a fun series - a quick read with lots of laughs and some steamy bits. The characters are great, and I enjoyed the unfolding of the murder mystery, though I am not sure I entirely understand why they came after Dot.

I like the town, and I like Dot and Josie a hell of a lot. I'm excited to see how Dot will continue to bring happiness and hope to Cedar Falls.

Spoilers ahead

Dot assumes it's her witchy 99 year itch that's urging her to leave home but it's none other than the blessing of the Lady upon her as she and her best friend Josie stumble upon a weak and broken coven in their new home. Before long Dot is appointed Lady and she makes plans to open her new business. Only Dot's leadership is about to become a trial by fire as witches are being murdered. With the help of the police chief, members of the witchy community and her best friend Dot sets out to find a killer but unfortunately becomes a target herself.

*******
It took me awhile to get into this but thankfully I persevered because I really liked the other books even though this one was a bit slow at the beginning

Oh how I wish it were more...

This book has so much potential. The problem is, you can't connect with the characters at all. You know how when reading you become privy to internal thoughts, that are usually meaningful or insightful? Those things help endear you to the characters. This book is non-stop motion. It is 95% physical actions. Literally, and the occasional one line of insight, but never of the characters thoughts, always of physical actions taking place. Even the conversations have a ping pong effect, quip-quip-quip-joke-motion-quip quip quip... that's fine and dandy, but where are the thoughts? Unless it's about superficial things (how hot someone looks) and actions (who done it musings), there aren't any. The FMC Dot, she never doubts herself, she doesn't second guess, she's very robotic forward actions only. A woman on a mission, and it's not satisfying. Same goes for the other characters. So, that being said... the connections are off, and I don't like that. I wish there was more to the story so I could love it.

As always, I will be scatter-brained in this review, and there may be spoilers.

This book was recommended by a bookish friend on TikTok this week, and I read it fairly quickly. As I was reading, I realize that I have read this author before (the humor and FMC was similar in this to the other series I read). I read the only other series that this author wrote, which really was just the first 2 books to the A Tail of Woah series, which is supposed to be a trilogy, but she has not finished it since the 2nd book came out in 2019. The "Lovin' in the Coven" series by the author is 7 books, but it looks like it ended in 2021. Just given the timing of her last book releases, I hope the author is OK and healthy given that she has been inactive for ~2 years after writing so many books in 2019 - 2021. I can't really find anything about it online, but she seems to be inactive on her facebook page too.

In regards to this book, I liked it, but I didn't love it. None of the male main characters seemed to have distinguished personalities--Jimmy and Chief were basically the same except 1 was a cop and the other a fireman. Jason was interesting for about 2 seconds when he hated Dot, but then he lost literally all uniqueness when Dot asked him on a date to get him to like her and then he was immediately whipped by her.

Dot was OK. She's definitely supposed to be funny, but I do agree with other reviewers that she comes off as incredibly immature considering she's supposed to be 99 years old. Her main personality seems to be spending a lot of money because she's rich, being sarcastic, and eating a lot of food, which isn't a bad thing, but it kind of went in loops and got annoying at times.

The writing style was a little weird because this book is heavily focused on dialogue. There is so much dialogue in this book because the conversations move rapid-fire, but at times, it got hard to follow and I couldn't tell who was speaking or how they got from point A to point B in the convo. It was trying a bit too hard to have a ton of witty banter that the banter became confusing.

The murder mystery throughout this book had a fairly obvious solution. I can't believe that the chief of police didn't think to consider that all of the male victims had slept with the same married witch. Chief...c'mon man...it's literally right in front of you and there are only like 10 witches who live in this town who could be killing the other witches. Use your brain, my guy.

Overall, it was OK. Characters need some work. Writing style is eh. BUT it's a very short book and quick read.

Okay this book was a TOTAL shock to me. I’m apart of a RH group on Facebook and I asked for recommendations and this was one of them. I call myself the book whisperer because for some reason I always pick out total BANGERS. And I had lots of books to choose from (most of which I’m still planning to read) but I just had a FEELING about this one. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I just dove right in...

WHAT?! Okay so this book was funny, sexy, and adorable. But it also had GREAT world building. The coven in this book was intriguing and the plot was perfectly paced to match the storyline. I can see where the story has holes that will lead into the next books but I’m just...shocked.

I loved this book so much.

Chief and Jimmy? Are we kidding? I love them????? I honestly feel a little strange saying this but the sexy scenes in this book were nothing like I’ve read in other books. Authors tend to write the same type of scenes. Boy and girl get each other off. In the same traditional ways. This book though? JF killed these scenes. If you’re looking for out of the ordinary sexy times? This is it.

There’s only 2 official boyfriends in this book and in the RH world it’s 3 or more so I’m SO excited to see who takes the mantel for the 3rd spot and I’m secretly hoping we get to see maybe a 4th or 5th?! I just love her and I love her guys.

There is SO much potential in this series and I know JF won’t disappoint.

The writing was great, the characters were lovable and awesome, the plot was amazing. This was a 10/10 would recommend for anyone who loves a foot PRN RH.

On to the next....!

Ok but

It had quite a few misspelled words, and sentences with extra words which left the sentence not make sense.

I found Dot to be quite immature for the age that she was suppose to be. Also I understand the Author wanted to have funny parts, however when a crash with combustion and hitting a tree happens I don't think it makes it funny adding "The wheels on the help go round and round". It just wasn't the right time.

I know the other six in this series has too do with the same FC so I shall give up now.

Witty & fun!

I’m not going to lie, but I really loved Dot and watching her start off fresh in a new town chosen for her, then find a coven of her own. Plus the men and the mysterious deaths! Loved it and can’t wait for the next book! Also, LOVED that it’s on Audible!

Dot was in line to become the next high priestess when her mother stepped down from leading their coven. She was expecting to take over sometime in the next several hundred years but when she received a call from the Goddess she left the only home that she had ever known. She and her best friend Josie packed up, followed the call, and ended up in Cedar Falls, a small town that is dying away but seems to have no shortage of hot men. Dot immediately sets out to save the town and turn it into a version of her own hometown where witches and other paranormals live side by side with humans. She buys a house and the old firehouse to open a bookstore and coffee shop. It's clear why the Goddess placed her here. Dot agrees to be their "temporary" high priestess since the coven has been without their Lady for too long and has lost their way. Now they stand to lose more since someone is killing the coven members and it's not too long before Dot becomes a target herself. Working with the handsome police chief, they try to find the murderer before losing any more members. However, the police chief is not the only one to have caught Dot's eye. This new home has lots of men to choose from. Why settle for only one?

This is a fun book. Think Charmed meets the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a little Bewitched thrown in. The humor sets it apart from others in this genre. I was a little hesitant after the first few chapters. The rest stop scene made me question Dot's likability. Luckily that was an isolated instance. I love her snark, her goofiness, and her self-awareness. I love the warped relationship she has with her mom and the love she has for her best friend. I do not like how much she drinks. Josie is a great bestie. Her first outing in Cedar Falls turned out to be a disaster but I really like her second attempt at dating. Dot's guys are great, the police chief and a fireman! Really, it's the beginning of a fantasy male calendar. Jimmy is a sweetheart but his character needs more depth. I am assuming we will get there. Bill is my favorite so far. I like the way they challenge one another. Great foreplay. I do not like the constant reminders of his one great love. It makes me think that he and Dot can never really be; his heart died two years ago and this is a weak substitution. I'm not sure how this gets fixed. The rest of the town including the humans, and especially Herb and Marge are great. The mystery was well done. It had just enough suspense but didn't completely take over the book. We had plenty of time to settle into the town and get to know the characters.

This is such an easy, quick entertaining read that I can see it becoming a binge series. I'm off to get book 2!

This was an okay book.

In terms of RH, it was pretty typical, with the guys all loving the main character. I did like that the attitude was overall accepting though. The sex scenes were decent.

The general writing style was a little iffy, as it had places where it didn't flow well, or read woodenly. This was disappointing because it did have first person narration, which you'd think that would have helped with that. The editing could use some work, as aside from the choppy writing style, there were often grammatical errors.

The plot was centered around a murder mystery, with witches, and I've read tons of those. This was pretty typical, and didn't do anything new there either.

For a book of its size (around 200 pages) I can forgive the general lack of world building, although the magic was explained alright. However, I'd like more detail on the system of power within covens, witches around the world, and what other kinds of supernatural creatures there are. Fae, werewolves, and vampires were mentioned.

As for the main character, I like the presence of Josie, her best friend, and Candace. That was nice in an RH. However, I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters, even the main one Dot, very well. Also, Dot seemed a little too perfect and goddess-like, which was kind of annoying.

I am curious about the whole rebirth of the coven thing, and what that means, and why it happened to Dot's coven. So I might read the next one, as these are short and kind of interesting, but there are also plenty of reasons to not. 2.5 - 3 stars.

This book took me by surprise. I expected a typical RH book that has awkward dialogues and predictable plot but I actually liked this one. It had two things; humour and tolerable heroine that aren't OTT, such a rare occurrence in RH genre these days.

I think the dialogues makes me like this book more than the story. Dot is some 100 year old witch so teenage style dialogues look a little out of place but she still had that maturity to her to not make her look like a dumbass when it comes to things that count. Besides those interactions with her bestie, Chief or Jimmy makes them feel they are genuine people talking normally. I found the one-liners and teasing to be quite humorous.

The story itself is not that unique but it was still fun figuring out the mystery. Sure there are flaws like the unnecessary details of what breakfast they are eating every time they went to the diner or the unbalanced amount of interaction with some of the other coven members considering the coven is in the spotlight because of the murders. I wanted to see more of the other characters to get a feel of the guessing game when it came to the murderer. By the time you get to know who is responsible, you kinda don't care cause they haven't even had a scene after the introductions, you know?

Nevertheless, I'm gonna stick with Dot and her still forming harem members who have names like Bill or Jimmy because they are funny and I want to know what happens next.

Loved this book. It made me laugh and kept me guessing all at the same time. I didn't guess who was responsible for the murders until close to the end and I laughed through the whole book. Definitely worth reading.

Happily surprised!

I really wasn't expecting to like this quite so much. But it was really good, short and simple with no cliffhanger. Terrific characters, with a murder mystery that is solved by the ending.
There is a set up and the end for another book, hopefully that comes out soon!! This was a great start, definitely worth the read!

I really didn't like the main character in this one.
The relationships felt awkward to me as well. I seemed like things would change out of nowhere, or the characters took something out of an interaction that I totally didn't see.
Definitely just not my style.

Mad at myself for not reading this series earlier its somewhat a cosy mystery rh and tbh the blurbs on her books arent doing their job properly cause the books are way better than the cover or blurb or storyline are made out to be at first glance. It was nice to see similarities between this character/story and the fox and the hounds series one just lil things like love of food the hilarious banter the more than one language incorporation the you are the most bestest phrase that both heroines have used. I love when i read an authors work and dind a common thread that links all her main characters regardless of how different they may be. I love love love that she isnt a goody two shoes witch either. Its so fruatrating when a symbol of womens freedom and power and wisdom one thats literally scared man to murder any reflection of this become goody goody i never harm people im just cute and quirky versions that a lot of cosy mysteries pull like its a hallmark movie or something. Its fine to have that vibe but i never want the main female character to be weak. I love when theyre more than just a pretty perfect face like they can be watered down to in some rhs this one i really felt like she earned her power and her friendships and people didnt pardon the pun naturally fall for her like magic but were realistic.
I needed a good rh and one that was a break from my utterly obsessed with academy rh lol. I was a little surprised by the amount of dire situations or rather the amount of hard knocks they all took before getting much of anywhere. I guess im so use to cosy mysteries that this one being less cosy at least for right now and more mystery was a little exciting and out of the expected comforting vanilla norm.
It reminds me in the best of ways of the southern ghosthunter series the most recent title in that series is mint julep murders i believe. Its like these fit a step above cosy mystery but before full blown mystery book. Their smart they have a solid feel to their characters and world. And the fact that this series or this book specifically looks to be the authors first is friggen amazing to me. Because it doesnt read like it at all. Their are areas that couldve been slightly sharper or developed but that can be sais about literally any book and even the ultra classics and literary geniuses so thats really not so much a critique as it is amazing that theres nothing i can say about it that id have enjoyed better if it done differently. The pacing was good. Theor was showing and not telling which i prefer it wasnt immediate bom chika wow wow or insta love which i dont mind but for more grounded books like this im glad it wasnt like wham bam thankyou maam. This book surprised me in the best of ways as have her others ive read and im super glad the series had like 6 ish books out if not already finished so now i can do my fav of faves reading an entire series nonstop! I love when i can really bathe in a world and soak up everything uninterrupted by other worlds it makes the experience so much more fufilling and resounding. Im hoping their isnt a lot more deaths or sad stuff so close to home however lol im not naive enough to think their wont be but since the book ended with a foray into bloodsucker book 2 in a charming way im quiet excited to see more of this magical world and more progress on the towns development and characters growing stronger and more involved without the threat of murder in the midst of their sleepy lil town haha i can handle that stuff much better when its not the main characters in the crossfire.
The mention of werewolves was fun too so i wonder what else will naturally turn up.
Awesome job. Keep up the good work!

Mini review

Going with 2.5

What I liked:
I liked the humor of the main two, although found her killing of one man to open the story a little too lax. The humor is abundant, the dialogue works well, and there's always something going on to keep it interesting. It was hard to put down and kept me reading. I like the small town getting fixed - a woman wanting to open a bookstore and cafe, such fun with that. I loved the medical scene and the doctor.

What I didn't like:
The sex stuff. Too rushed and I didn't feel a connection between the main and the two men she's into. It seemed too quick. I also don't like the voyeur stuff and it started getting overdone. I ended up skimming most of that after all.

Overall - when the plot is going on, it's great, but the overdone "steam" that shouldn't exist yet and felt forced and cheesy was another story.

And I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe she's a little over 100 years old and only had one serious boyfriend, while she started investing in stocks when she was a teenager and came from a town with a large population considering its size. That's unrealistic as hell and why have that in there when it doesn't make sense and shouldn't change anything about her past?

Not bad

This is a pretty easy read. I had fun with it though. Dot is quite the character, the friends we meet and lovers she has are very mature. It’s a nice change tbh. Dot is still silly but not blatantly stupid silly. I’m winding how many guys will be in Dot’s harem bc right now it’s only 2 and that isn’t a harem lol.

I enjoyed the mystery of this while getting moved in and the coven being established. Heading to the next book for sure.

One point of contention they say they are immortal, and yet

Witches, mystery and intriguing characters.

This is the first book of this Reverse Harem and also the first book I've read by this author. I love a bit of mystery and action in books and this definitely had some. I'm looking forward to reading book two and getting to know these characters better. Also to see what their next adventures may entail..

Well this was one of those amazing finds you just stumble upon. This has to be one of the best written books I have read in a while. I love how although written with a mischievous easy going style, the emotions still grab you! I found the storyline absolutely great fun to read, it ticks all the boxes wth humour snark romance magic and drama. The heroine is strong and snarky and the other characters colourful and loveable, a great read

Light hearted banter, witchcraft, hot men- maybe its just where I am at but its not a series I plan to continue. Maybe another time? The story was fine.
I really enjoyed how she was not threatened in getting close with others (men) and feeling ownership of the coven (I can't believe I am writing this) and solving a mystery but not much else drew me to read further.
