A waiter, strapped for cash, has a watchful AI implanted before work. With a new body, an injured woman is brought face-to-face with trauma from her past. Short anthology of SFF stories, mostly set in a not too distant, vaguely dystopian future. Very much Black Mirror vibes. No monsters under the bed or paranormal, just stretching the boundaries of possible with technology. I love this kind of stuff and was not disappointed in this anthology - going to check out the next installment immediately.

As someone who loves both creepy SFF and queer fiction - I also loved the casual queerness in each of the stories. It isn't integral to the plot, and there aren't any big statements made. Just matter of the fact and accepted. In that sense, the book shows a future that's not dystopian at all.

Definitely recommend.

Short stories were a 4/5 while the narration was a 2/5 star.

Reaaaallly interesting black mirror-esque stories, loved how creepy and questionable some of the stories were, enjoyed how much technology and sci-fi were included in this. I think I'll need to reread my favorites in ebook. Such interesting story telling, and I'd read a full-length book from every one of the short stories! Also two thumbs up for so much queerness in every story!

Futures Gleaming Darkly is such an excellent read. I love how Waters incorporates queer voices into each narrative, creating an inclusive look into how technology may enhance or hinder our lives in the future. Each story is written with beautiful command of the English language. Enjoy it on a rainy afternoon with your favorite warm drink.

A fantastic collection of short stories and there's several that are maddening in that he gets started, but I would want to see more of what happens.
