Football is my life, and coaching in the NFL is my dream. I have a doctorate in sports psychology, but the fact that I’m a woman means I couldn’t possibly know a thing about football, let alone coaching a team. At least, that’s what my critics say. Others argue a woman on the sidelines would be a distraction.
Distraction. Pfft. I’m a professional, and I certainly don’t fall for players.
When I land my dream job coaching the Boston Rebels, I realize just how difficult it will be to maintain a hands-off approach to the team. Everything about them, from their broad shoulders and thick biceps to their chiseled abs and narrow waists, makes it so I’m the one who’s having trouble staying focused.
As if that weren’t bad enough, I’m attracted to not one, but three, players. Three offensive players who keep breaking through my defenses.
I’m their coach, but absolutely nothing in my playbook prepared me for this. My head seems to understand they’re completely off-limits, but my heart is pulling a reverse play.
An adventurer at heart, Julia dabbles in everything from tap dance to calligraphy. When she's not traveling, Julia is learning new recipes, hiking, sailing, or inhaling copious amounts of fine chocolate.
I've just recently been turned onto the whole reverse harem phenomena. I'm into menage, but hadn't really considered a scenario in which multiple men could coexist with one another without also banging one another. UNTIL NOW.
I really enjoyed Time of Enchantment, but I think The Reverse Play tops it. The writing, the character development, the story line... it was all there. I think I particularly enjoyed that this story was more about adults than young adults, which is more my speed at the moment (I fluctuate).
Full disclosure, I hate football. Most sports, actually. But that didn't lessen my enjoyment of this football-centered story. If you're a huge football fan then don't prepare yourself for outright realistic references; as our author mentions at the beginning of the book, she takes some liberties. But I didn't really notice them which means you probably need to be a fan of the sport to actually care.
Blake is a fun heroine. She's passionate about her future career and she's not going to let the fact that she was born female keep her from breaking into the coaching game. I appreciated that even though she had a plethora of feelings for a select group of football players that she really held out on acting on any of those emotions as long as humanly possible. I wouldn't have enjoyed her nearly as much if she'd been willing to throw away her career on a whim.
Tristan, Xavier, and Colt are three very great guys. They were different enough from one another that I was easily able to remember their qualities and personalities without jumbling them all up together. I'm really looking forward to learning more about them in the next book!
If you like manly men and independent women, then you're going to love this one.
I legally cannot give this book 5 stars since there is NO SMUT???? But there are cringe parts that I struggled with so it’s probs worth the 4 stars. Overall, liked the characters and the plot just fine, I’ll be reading this entire series for sure! Cant wait for the smut to begin Jesus !!!!!!!
Julia Clarke will not disappoint with the first book book in the Rebels series. I loved The Reverse Play, it was an absolute touchdown with the characters - Blake and her Rebels, and the fantastic storyline.
As Blake is given a job opportunity that she’s been waiting for, she meet 3 men who work their way into her heart - Colt, the flirt, Tristan, the monk, and Xavier, the teddy bear.
I highly recommend The Reverse Play, whether you’re a lover of football or not. I can’t wait to read more in the next book.
Side note: checkout The Reverse Play Extras at the end of the book for a playlist to listen to whilst reading.
Holy Crap this book was so so good, I was not a huge fan of Contemporary RH but I was so wrong this amazing and I need a Colt, Tristan and Xavier in my life please. Everyone should definitely go and get this book to read!!
Blake has dreamed of football her entire life. First playing football. When she played for the USA Women's team in the Olympics that dream came true. Now she wants to coach football. She has the education, the credentials, and the football knowledge, but she's lacking certain body parts that it takes to get hired in a male-dominated field. She's heard all of the arguments but she's determined to make her dream come true. So when her hometown team the Boston Rebels offers her a temporary job, she jumps at the chance, ready to make her mark. Blake soon proves that she's got what it takes. She's smart, quick, and works harder than anyone. There's only one problem...well, actually three. Three offensive players, Colt, Tristan, and Xavier.
I am a huge sports fan. Basketball, football, futbol. I am every bit as knowledgeable as male fans and love my teams just as much. I really appreciated that this book didn't gloss over terms or dumb down the sport. I appreciated that Blake knew the player stats and analyzed the game tapes. And I appreciated that she still dressed, behaved, and reveled in being a woman. She was professional. She demanded respect. She was a refreshing character. I also liked the men. I was worried Colton would be too much but he managed to not be the over-the-top party boy man-whore or if he was in the past it wasn't focused on. I like a guy with a sense of fun that keeps it smart. Xavier seemed almost too good to be true, caring and considerate. But my heart was stolen by the monk. Tristan made you work as hard as he did daily to get close. So worth it. I would have liked more of an in-depth look into each of the guys. Hopefully, that comes in the next book. I love their friendship and the ending from their POV. I was a bit disappointed with Bastian's place in the story. I loved him from the beginning and had hoped he got more storytime. He brings the humor.
I look forward to the next book. I felt that Blake was a little more hysterical than the situation called for ending book one. I want to see her get her footing back and take control again. I see the path she should attempt; I hope she does too.
Oh sweet mother of Tahoe can we please have more FMCs like Blake. Her determination and drive is so inspiring. Hell it made me think if Blake can make her “impossible” dreams come true, then why can’t I? She is truly passionate about what she does and the people that surround her. The team is her family and she would do everything in her power to see them succeed. She has worked so hard to shatter that motherfucking glass and dammit I’m proud of her. We all should strive to be a little more like Blake.
Colt is quite the hoot and a half. He had so many one liners. The kind that made you want to shake your head but you couldn’t help but laugh at. Colt shows Blake that it’s okay to loosen up and that it’s okay to have a little fun in your life. Tristan is determined and works as hard as he can not only for himself but for his team. He is so dedicated to his career and is such a team leader. Tristan’s ambition rival’s Blake’s and makes sure she is aware that she is just as worthy of being where she is as the rest of them. He provides her a little bit of competition and pushes her to see that she has earned her place. Xavier, my cuddly giant Xavier. Xavier has such a kind heart. He cares so much for the people around him and for humanity in general. He may be quite but he is observant and uses that to take care of the people around him. Xavier reminds Blake that it’s okay to slow down once in a while and that caring for the people around you is a blessing not a distraction.
I also loved me some Bastian. He is such a great character and had me it fits of giggles quite frequently. Reminded me a lot of my own Bastian. I cannot wait to see him introduced to the guys and how they interact. I especially want to see him hit in Colt and see how he reacts.
These wonderful men each give Blake a little something that she didn’t realize she was missing. She needs all of them in her life. The guys need a special fourth to add into their head touching ritual and I think Blake is that special fourth. I can’t wait to see how things play out, especially now that they are realizing that they all three have feelings for her.
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m ready for more football!
The Reverse Play was my first book by Julia Clarke and also my first Reverse Harem novel. To be honest I had never really had an interest in that type of book but I had heard positive reviews of this one so when the author contacted me I thought sure! I do love sports romance.
This one is about Blake. Blake loves football and it is her life. She played in the Olympics when they had a women football team. She now wants to become a coach for a football and as luck would have it she gets a job for a team in the NFL. This is were she meets Tristan, Colt, and Xavier. Oh my I loved all three of these guys so much. At first I was really into Colt, and Xavier but as I got to know Tristan I really fell for his character.
I think what really made me love this one was the slow burn of the romance. Nothing is rushed into and I find this way more believable. I also loved how badass Blake is! She goes for her dreams and doesn't let anyone get in her way. She is also pretty disciplined and I loved how she didn't want to wreck her dream by getting with any of the players. Also her BFF Bastian was truly awesome. I want him to get his own story!!
Loved!!!!!! I didn't want this book to end. I can't wait for the next book!!! You couldn't he!p but love Blake and oh man tristan ,Xavier and colt were amazing. You couldn't help but fall in love with all of these characters.
Blake is a brilliant woman! She has a PhD in sports psychology. Blake was an olympic athlete! She is smart and talented! Blake wants to break into a male dominated field and isn't afraid to push some boundaries. She wants to coach football. Football is her life. She knows that she will have to claw her way in, but she isn't afraid to keep putting herself out there. And while she does that, she supports other girls and women who have similar dreams. Football hotties. 3 of them to be exact. I love reverse harem stories, but contemporary romance RH is pretty slim. So, combine reverse harem with sports romance and its like all my dreams have come true! Tristan, Xavier, and Colt are wonderful heroes! They are professional footballers but they aren't arrogant, rude, demeaning, or sexist. They are kind, humble, and sweet. It's like finding not just 1 unicorn, but three.
So, there are my 5 favorite things about the Reverse Play! You also get a bit of a taboo romance because Blake is their coach and relationships with players is forbidden. So, will Blake give up her dream job for the love of 3 football hotties? I just loved their story. Between Blake's dogged determination and Tristan, Colt, and Xavier's slow romancing, this story was perfect! I think the story has laid the groundwork for a great series!
POV: 1st (Blake) Tears: no Trope: reverse harem, football Triggers: none Series/Standalone: series (this is book 1) Cliffhanger: HEA:
sports romance like Overnight Sensation by Sarina Bowen, The Hardest Fall by Elle Maise, The Friend Zone by Kristen Callihan but wished they were reverse harems ...then you will probably like The Reverse Play!

Another fun RH! There are not many sports RH stories so this one was exciting to see. Especially since it’s from the author of one of my favorites the stardust series. Really liked Blake and the guys and I can’t wait to see how it pulls the RH aspect into the story.
This story was AMAZING. First of all can I just say that it's so refreshing to read about a woman dominating in male driven sport. As a football lover myself, I loved reading about Blake and relating to her passion and love of the game. The moment I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. The story was compelling, the characters captivating. I need a Tristan in my life. I wish I'd gotten a little more heat, but I'm obsessed. This is the best book I've gotten to read this year, I am impatiently awaiting book 2
Let me be frank, I am a huge football fan. I watch football way too much and wished I could have been allowed to play it growing up. Might make me a little biased, but oh well haha. This book really resonated with me. For 1, it helped bring football back to me, even for a couple days, while we are in the offseason. I read through this book way too quickly, but I loved every second of it!
I saw some reviews mentioning there was too much football. I beg to disagree, but to each their own. I absolutely appreciated that this book set up the series and wasn't huge on the romance side. Yes, I would consider this book slow burn based on other RH books I have read, but I think it lends itself to the reality of the situation. It wouldn't have been as amazing if the MC hooked up with all the players in the first book. That would take away from the whole message and Blake's attempt to show everyone that women belong in football too. Like yes, there is tension and maaaybe something happens with 1 of the players, but this series lends itself to have the relationships build. Blake and the guys need to trust each other first before anything can really happen.
I can't praise this book enough in terms of likability. I connected with Blake and her relationship with her dad and football. I grew up going to my hometown's stadium with my dad and we still go when we get tickets and when we don't we get into debates EVERY Sunday that my brother and I go over and watch the game with him and my mom. By adding that layer to this story with Blake and Big Mac, it made it personal and made me connect so much with the story.
In terms of the guys (holy moly they are DELICIOUS and need to know who their inspirations were!), I loved that the author gave us 3 different personalities for Blake's future harem, and yes some are predictable, but that didn't detract from the story at all. I thought the author did a great job painting the "baddies" of the team and made it clear what would be some of the future conflicts. I can't wait to learn more about X, Tris, and Colt and see how they tackle their feelings for Blake. I enjoyed the tension but also the blossoming of something between her and the guys. I wish I had one of each for myself ❤️
Another thing in the pro column for this book is Blake's believability. As a woman in a predominantly male industry, I understand Blake's feelings about proving yourself and being role models for others. Also, needing to stay professional so people continue to take you seriously. The message in this story I think is super important and I haven't seen anyone in the RH community tackle it like this author has. Yay girl power!! I liked that Blake could hold her own and enjoyed the relationships she is building with the other members of the Rebels, especially Carrie and Coach Sawyer.
Oh, one last thing. I looooved her bff, Bastian, and I need him to have a spinoff story, like RIGHT NOW! I am a huge M/M fan and he needs some lovin' too ❤️.
I highly recommend this series and cannot wait for Book 2!! I wish I could be Blake so badly, its not even funny 😂. Can't wait to see how Tristan and the guys reconnect/grovel with Blake after what happened in Book 1. Only a little bit to go until we all get to see what the author has up her sleeve for Book 2 😊
I love reverse harem, and for the most part I enjoyed this one.
My main complaint is that it's marketed as a sports romance...but there's really not any actual football in it? There's lots of talk about football, and the stuff surrounding football...just not the actual football games or practices. I also thought we'd be seeing more into the field of sports psychology. Or more about Blake's (the heroine's) job itself. Instead it just kind of felt like she was there with the team. I wanted more.
There's lots of time-skipping and moments I would've loved to see, like when the heroine was introduced to the team for the first time. I would've LOVED to see more reactions. The team, the media, etc. So much opportunity there! But instead the majority of the book is her internal dialogue about how these men are affecting her. I think if the book had more impactful scenes (because even the stuff we got felt short?) and included more about football itself on the field, I would've enjoyed it a lot more. Even just talk about what they were doing on the field or during practice, instead of passing over it! Eh.
Overall, I'm very excited to see where this series (at least, I think it's a series? Not sure how many books are going to be in it) goes. I like the men, even though I feel like I didn't really get to know them in this one. I like the heroine, even though she's repetitive in her thoughts and keeps making awful decisions...which will definitely get annoying if she keeps doing it. I like the storyline. This didn't quite feel like a book, but more of an introduction of the characters.
I don't know. I really liked the idea of this one, though! Always on the hunt for sports romances.
(Two more things I loved - thank you, thank you, thank you Julia for not shoving other women down our throats. I thought you did a great job of showing that the men were attractive, wanted, and had histories without having women draped all over them in front of the heroine. I can't stand seeing that, so it was a breath of fresh air to not see it flaunted in my face during a sports romance. That's difficult to balance for writers, and I think you did an amazing job. "The Monk" was also a great touch.
Also, I love that the three men area already super close, but I really like that )
I'm going to be talking about the series as a whole, minus half of the 3rd book.
I really enjoyed this series despite the DNF. I loved the fact that the heroine was dedicated. She acknowledged that the guys were good looking when she first met them but did not drool all over them and forget all about her work. I really enjoyed her dedication to her job.
See this RH wasn't like any that I've read before. I love the aspect of her being their coach and that being what stands in their way...except I wish that the threat would've been more suspenseful and in-your-face, especially considering it could ruin everything she's devoted her life to.
The guys were great.
Tristan is the quiet, dark type, but he's not at all an asshole...okay there was one chapter but he had a lot going on. Xavier was the calm, nice, 'always there to talk' type. He was a gem. Colt was the funny, 'don't take me seriously', flirty type.
I really liked them and their dedication to both the sport and Blake. They all had layers and weren't just that stereotype and I enjoyed learning about them.
Another thing I really liked was the fact that blake was almost 6ft tall. I read a lot of books and there always tends to be an itty-bitty, an inch over 5ft heroine. Now I love them, but give tall girls a bit of love - and don't come at me with the 5ft 7 'tall girl' with her 6ft 7 boyfriend, no bitch, I want a mother-*ucking beast. At 5ft 4, I'm definitely not a tall girl, but, damn, I'm not feeling the love for them. I also liked that two of the guys were hardly taller than her - in fact, Xavier was probably around the same height as Blake. Usually whenever I do read about a 'tall girl'...5ft 7, 3 inches above average 'tall girl', the love interest is always a hella tall guy. I mean, damn, the guy doesn't always need to tower over her. Mini-rant over.
I feel like the relationships progressed well. The guys and Blake found the reverse harem suggestion crazy when they first heard about it and I enjoyed that.
I can't give any input on the sports side of things and accuracy. I am not to sports at all when its not in a book so I wouldn't know :)
I DNF the last half of the third book because I felt it got repetitive, but I really did enjoy the series anyway. Give this a go!
~REVIEW🖋~ The quick and dirty: Slow burn, angsty, reverse-harem sports romance with some unexpected twists, and a cliff hanger that leaves you dying in anticipation for the next book!
Blake MacKenzie has finally gotten her foot in the door with an NFL team as an assistant QC coach. She's excels at the job and is distinctly aware that all eyes are on her because she is one of only a few female NFL coaches. While she's a professional, she also struggles with her immediate attraction to certain players, especially as she gets to know them better. The line is crossed during an emotional charged moment and the lust she was consumed with quickly morphs into mortification and guilt. As she attempts to wrangle her conflicting feelings, she's hit with one that she might not be able to deal with as quickly: betrayal. A betrayal that might not only cost her her job, but also her heart.
I'm not a sports person so I wasn't sure how much I was going to love this one but was pleasantly surprised! Love, love, love a female coach in a position of power! Love that the male lead isn't one hunky NFL player but three! And all the feels y'all. Angsty feels for the most part, but you definitely *feel* them. Oh, and wait until you meet Sebastian, Blake's bestie. You'll love him! 💖💖💖
I can not WAIT to find out what happens next!

Sigh... I really wanted to like this one, but the ending kind of killed it for me. It's a reverse harem sports romance. The MC is Charity and she is a kick ass woman that plays football herself and dreams about being a coach. I am not into sport but I still enjoyed the most of the book anyway. There are 3 love interests Colt the Flirt, Tristan the Monk, and Xavier the Teddy Bear. The drama wasn't too intense but there was enough there to keep things interesting. I didn't like when Tristan when all brat like and decided to be a asshole for a while to people who didn't deserve it. I get that he is worried about not being able to play, but the way he acted did not endear him to me. I also liked the MC and the fact that she worked on being the first female coach. I liked the fact the author didn't just give that to her and created a realistic (far fetched) opportunity for her. However, I didn't like the MC at the end when she finds out that some of the guys were betting on who would sleep with her. She act reasonable until she blame Tristan and accuses him of being part of the bet when his actions show that it wasn't the case. Heck, even the MC knows she is being unreasonable but won't relent. I liked the book but it didn't hook me enough to read the rest of the series. If you like RH sports romance it's worth the read.

The book was promising when I started reading. I was glad that I finally picked up a book again with good writing skills, but it deteriorated quickly after she met the guys. It was a look about the lust, the looks, and the greediness. The book also consisted mostly of inner monologue about the three guys and what she wanted but couldn’t want and oh my god I am bad Blakey. There isn’t really anything happening. For me the book lacks character development (because only writing about them the same things and a few interactions, doesn’t make a character a person), it’s also not really a sports-read because there is very few sport in it, mostly talking about how it has been for Blake in the past and the guys did good and some related jargon. I stopped reading at 95% because I was not interested in reading to the end, I feared it would be much of the same without really anything exciting. I will not read the next in the series and I think it’s a shame that for me this series wasn’t working, because it did have great potential. One advice for authors, one I’ve given more in the recent past: quit the long, tedious inner monologue (it contributes nothing if it’s just repeating the same thing over and over, it will get boring) and try a bit more show than tell in your book.
I thought this was pretty good. It's well written and fairly original but I found this had a lot of the same issues as the Stardust series. First, the FMC Blake is too perfect. It's difficult to relate to an Olympic gold medalist. She's described as physically perfect, super intelligent, and an all around great person. I found myself hating her more than liking her.
Second, Blake is a drama queen. Something small goes wrong in her life and it's the end of the world. Because clearly a picture or a rumor is enough to completely derail her future. I spent a good portion of the book wanting to shake her for constantly making a mountain out of a molehill.
Finally, the guys were almost entirely unremarkable. I actually kept forgetting their names and couldn't tell them apart until over half way through.
Basically, this is a quick entertaining read. But with an unlikable FMC and unremarkable guys, you're left with a whole bunch of overly descriptive football scenes. I'll pass on the next one but if football is your thing check it out.
Nice! B is such an amazing woman, she would be THE PERFECT GIRL FRIEND or girlfriend, either way heheheh. ANYWAY! This was good, though I got really lost with the techniques, movements and positions of the football glossary, otherwise, I enjoyed so much the story I literally swallow it. The characters are nice, the three MLs together literally become the perfect man, wtf? Lol. Her professional trajectory was pretty cool too and the dilemma they’re going through felt so real, so believable, that I can’t stop thinking about this happening IRL. For the first time, I can’t rate the MLs, of course I have my favorite, (X, *cough cough*), but I like the other two the same amount… shit. Totally get B, I just couldn’t behave myself around those gods among mortals lmao. Btw, the toilet scene WAS. SO. HOT!?!?!? Can’t wait for the steamy scenes MUWAHAHAHA (*evil laugh*). But seriously, this book really surprised me. I came expecting nothing, and left feeling everything. So. Nice. And remember, never say never ;)
I'm giving up on this crap. I liked the main character before she started working with the Rebels, but after that she became a completely different woman.
She doesn't want anyone to jump to conclusions or start rumors about her dating any of the players, she mentions her professional ethics and blah blah blah, but from what I've read of the book, she spent her time flirting with three of the players IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. I don't know if she's a liar, a hypocrite, or just an IDIOT. If you don't want anyone to misunderstand you, then think a little bit. If you're going to flirt, flirt in private or something. But she doesn't set limits or think coherently. At that point, I just wanted her to be exposed and lose her job forever.
Oh, and I'm not even going to mention the huge coincidence that a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER was in a little-known bar, let alone two of them. It's stupid and was just used as an excuse for her to meet her future love interests.
This was another series I decided to read due to a Influencer who gave it huge raves as a sports romance. Firstly, these books are very well written with a very strong female lead - she is tough, determined, goal orientated, sexually assured but also has her priorities wrong (IMO). The author is also very knowledgeable regarding American football and it shines through in these books - particularly book 1 - which I loved. What let it down for me was the lack of spice. These books are RH and at first I thought it was a slow burn series but when the spice finally hit it was very lackluster and there wasn't much of it. Considering this is a football RH with strong male leads in their prime and a sexually confident FMC it was really disappointing. Unfortunately this ruined the story for me.
First off I love Julia Clarke so, I knew coming in this was going to be good. Second Football and RH, two of some of my favorite things and BAM I am hooked.
Blake, our female lead, is smart, passionate and tough. She loves football and knows everything about it. She has a PHD in sports psychology and is very focused on her dream. With her chance encounter leading to her dream job. She went in determined to do a good job. And she does, she stays so focused. You really have to admire her tenacity and determination. I know I would have given in along the way multiple times. The guys are amazing!! Xavier is so sweet, Colt is funny and usually up to something, and then Tristan, who reminded me a lot of Blake.
Overall, The Reverse Play is a great start to this series. There is a cliffhanger, but in my opinion not a bad one. Just sets up the reader for book two.
I'm not a sports girl, but The Reverse Play had me cheering for Blake and her Boston Rebels! Blake is strong, motivated, crazy knowledgeable, and incredibly capable. She's handed a dream job when she's asked to consult on offense for the Boston Rebels. But her attraction to Colt, Xavier, and Tristan threaten the very career she's sacrificed everything for. Talk about a slow burn!!!!! The tension is so thick I could cut it with a knife! The men are so honorable and different, but each one is so drool worthy. The plot is fast paced and exciting and it's extremely well written. Let this football themed romance sweep you away!
First book in a new series, Julia had done an amazing job. This book has everything I love..I am a sucker for romance and combined with Reverse Harem I am in paradise! Blake, our heroine, is talented, smart and surrounded by a world dominated by man but who isn't afraid to let people hear her voice. Our heroes are three professional footballers who are kind, sweet and respectful. This is a slow romance with some taboo in it, since Blake is their coach. I really like her writing with a good description of the characters and the setting. The plot has a good evolution which let a good ground for the rest of the series!
It's a good enough story I got more then half way through it but I just cant stand the women choosing a guy over a job trope. The kind where the guy is in the position of power and if anything goes wrong the women pays the price for it. the main character Blake is ok except she seems to just keep putting herself in stupid situations I knew where it was leading and I was hoping this book could just be a guilty pleasure read but I just couldn't do it.
I love that this is about a woman breaking into what is essentially a man's world. I also enjoyed that it's a slow burn and reading about b's struggles with herself, her heart and the legacy she's always wanted. I only gave 4 because it's American and football means something else in the UK which meant I didn't have a clue about much of the terminology that was used so found it a little boring at times. That being said I can't wait to learn more about the guys and I hope the idiots get their comeuppance. Well written book that's been written with care and thought.
With football season finally here again, this couldn’t have been a more perfect read! I loved Blake and her unapologetic love for football and chasing her dreams. The characters were uniquely complex and each added depth and pulled me further into the story. I can't decide which player I love the most, but Bastian was a winning combo of comedic relief and loving support, and he couldn't be more perfect. The writing was exceptional and I liked the author’s use of football related puns and lingo in her descriptions. I was on the edge of my seat from the tension and read this in a single sitting. If you love football, strong females, or sports romances, this is an absolute must-read!
