What would YOU do if someone hurt the one you love?
Roy and Susie are the perfect couple, an ideal family living a fairy-tale life... until their teenage daughter is senselessly killed.
Just as they’re managing to put that tragic loss behind them, a stranger approaches Roy in a bar with a drunken proposal—he invokes their daughter’s memory to ask Roy to kill a man.
All is not as it seems, however, and Roy and Susie soon find themselves navigating an intricate web of deception, betrayal, and revenge.
Will Roy and Susie become victims themselves, or can they outwit their unseen enemies? And what secrets are they keeping from each other that could destroy them?
I grew up in Texas in the seventies, and although I really wanted to go into writing and film from an early age, my parents (Cuban-American) were NOT on board.
They believed there were only three acceptable career paths for a male child: doctor, lawyer, and architect.
After a disastrous first year of college pre-Med (too much fun, not enough study), I ended up getting a BA in philosophy (not acceptable), then I went to law school (salvaging the family name).
In law school, I was lucky enough to be selected for law journal and my articles have been cited by courts and recognized on the National Law Journal’s “Worth Reading” list – which for law is like a top review in the New York Times (pretty cool).
After ten years as a trial lawyer, I decided that law and family life weren’t compatible. So, I went back to school for an MBA, and later pursued a PhD, crossing the line from well-educated to over-educated around the turn of the century.
With these credentials, I was able to leave law for corporate America, where I got to spend long stints working in Europe and Asia.
It was my wife who pushed me to write novels. And, after thousands of hours writing, and seven or eight literary miscarriages over the course of eighteen years, I am now a published fiction author!
We live all in South Florida (for now) with our six (yes - 6) dogs and one cat.
I really have nothing to say about this book that hasn't already been said! This one grips you from the get-go and you'll find yourself turning the pages regardless of the time & place you are at. Atleast this was the case with me. Dark, twisted and so so so compelling! So much so, I am still having trouble concentrating on my next book because I was so blown away by the sheer brilliance of Eye for Eye. Everytime I make an attempt to read a chapter in my new book, I find myself invariably thinking about the plot of Eye for Eye and how it was executed. Great characters as well (I don't know what this says about me as a person, but there it is). And now that I know that there are atleast 2 more books in the series, I can't stop fantasizing about reading the next one. If this is the bar Mr. Franko sets for his debut (in fiction) then I can't really wait for the next two. Just can't! I think I have a new favorite!! Oh and very cool website , too! Thank you Netgalley, J. K. Franko & Cameron Publicity & Marketing Ltd. for an arc.
What is it they say about not judging a book by its cover... Well with a cover as striking as this one I couldn't help but be intrigued and Book 1 of the Talion Series - Eye for Eye by JK Franko did not disappoint.
Eye for Eye has it all from murder, mystery, clever cover ups and hidden secrets to police questioning, allegations of rape and many questions of morality along the way. The characters are well defined and relatable and the scene imagery is stunning, you'll see for yourself when you read it but there are so many descriptive passages that leap off the page and into your mind.
Although this is primarily a crime thriller, there is a subtle undercurrent of a wicked sense of humour throughout which particularly appealed to me.
This is a beautifully crafted example of an intelligent thriller. I can honestly say I was hooked from the first few pages of the book and I can't wait for the next one in the series; this debut author has truly made his mark.
As ever, no spoilers from me! If having a brilliant book isn't enough, there is a brilliant book launch coming up soon too - details are here if you fancy coming along to Covent Garden https://jkfranko.com/2019/03/01/limit...
Synopsis: When I first met Susie, she appeared to be a normal, happily-married woman dealing with tragedy. Then, I uncovered her secrets. While I could understand everything that she’d done, I could never approve. But, knowing what she was capable of, it became clear that if I was going to survive her, I had to play by her rules. And, the first and most important rule is... leave no singing bones.
My goodness what a tightly woven novel. It is Book 1 in the Talion Series and I cant wait to read the other two.
Full of hate, revenge and justice this thriller races along at breakneck speed in its desire to commit the perfect murder.
Full of twists and turns this propels the reader to the end but not the final conclusion.
Meticulously researched and scarily plausible I finished this novel in just a little over a day. I was hooked and although I needed to know the outcome I didn’t want it to end.
Rarely do I find a book that is so near perfect but I think this is it. Compelling storyline and sub plots, convincing characterisation and enough pace and twists to keep it alive right to the end.
Has to get 5 stars - I can’t wait to read Book 2 and 3 in the series. A little taster of book 2 follows on from the end of this one and I’m hooked already!
Highly recommended
I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.
This was one of the most twisted tales of the human psyche. The story was exactly as the title suggested. The biblical meaning applied to the characters in this book.
Susie and Ray lost their daughter to a road accident with a head on collision with the driver of the car who was texting and driving. The boy was in coma, the daughter died, parents devastated, they wanted pure cold unadulterated REVENGE. States away, a daughter of another couple was raped by the son of a senator. Then came the twisted plan. Think Strangers on a Train
My first book by author J. K. Franko, and man, did he plan the perfect murder. It was obvious where the story was leading to from the title and the various references. But it was the delivery which shocked me to the core. How to plan a perfect murder ought to be the name of this book. The author's brain could take the various scenarios and make his characters take the precautions to subvert it.
Franko had not written this story to be only about that. He went one step further and showed me how the cops tightened the noose around the perps. The characters were etched with a flair for wickedness. Did I blame them for wanting revenge? No. How could I? They had lost an only daughter to an idiot texting while driving.
The human psyche was explored brilliantly. There were layers which were hidden deep, way back to the childhood. The seeds of evil were sowed before I could guess what the hidden nuances were. The last half had the tension overflowing where I could feel the cops getting closer and closer. But did Susie and Roy get away with it? Read the book.
I could only say - Whew - after reading it. A different heart pounding thriller. My midnight read.
I saw this cover, then the synopsis, and I immediately knew I had to read the book. Then I started reading. I blinked and a few hours had passed. My dogs wanted dinner but all I wanted to do was finish this book!
As much as I'd love to tell you all about the story, I can't. You need to experience this one without even the hint of a spoiler. So I'll tell you this: The writing is perfection. Truly. This is the kind of story that sucks you all the way in and doesn't let go.
The amount of research that went into this book had to be immense, but I didn't think about that until after I finished. I never felt the weight of an overly detailed story. What I felt was an astounding level of realism.
This is a thriller with a strong emotional connection. The characters are complex, walk-off-the-page people.
Eye for Eye is the first book in the Talion Series. There is a bit of a cliffhanger left for the launching point of the next book. I'm not sure if this is a trilogy or an ongoing series, but for now I know there are three books planned. Book 2 releases on Halloween, and book 3 comes out in 2020.
*I received a review copy as part of the Partners in Crime Blog Tour.*
Smart and twisting, Eye for Eye brings a refreshing style to suspense, and in a way that keeps readers guessing and surprised. At times, it's got the feel of a runaway train that you can't help holding onto, just to see what will come next, further down the track. At other times, it's got the sly wink of a trickster going for it, and voice and style take over in a way that allow a sort of sophisticated terror to creep in. Without a doubt, Franko has a talent for character that hinges on a welcome understanding of psychology and the subtleties of human nature, which brings this sometimes disturbing novel to life.
Disclosure: I received an advance review copy from the author
Eye for Eye is a contemporary mystery thriller that is disturbingly hard to put down. It asks the reader some serious questions around justice, and more particularly: how far would you be able to go to avenge a loved one?
It's a question that went through my mind a few times in the past — out of sheer curiosity — but it took several more layers of depth and through Roy and Susie's fictional experience in this novel. The masterful characterisation makes it easy for the reader to put themselves into the couple's shoes, and everyone of their decisions feels justified, as unlawful as they might be.
Susie and Roy seem like the perfect couple until you uncover their story. Tragedy struck their lives, and they were devastated by it, to the point that it almost ruined their marriage. When presented with an opportunity to avenge an unrelated wrongdoing, the couple has to decide if they believe in the law of talion: an eye for an eye. They also have to decide: will the risk be worth the reward?
Going into this book, I really didn’t know what to expect. The book description doesn’t give much to go on. What I got was a heart-pounding, incredibly well-written thriller with unexpected twists and turns. This book poses so many questions that I found myself explaining parts of the plot to my husband and asking what he would do if placed in different situations. I really enjoyed this book and I’m excited to dive into my advance copy of the sequel, Tooth for Tooth.
FYI: lots of Game of Thrones references & potential spoilers throughout which can be a good or bad thing, depending on if you watch the show or not. I don't watch the show so I could have done without the references but that might add an interest layer if you are a fan.
Great book! A friend passed me an advance copy of Eye for Eye. New author, new series. I wasn't expecting much, though he told me it was really good. Wow! The book pulls you in immediately. The characters feel very real, very well-developed. But the best part is that the pace just builds, and builds (kind of like Gone Girl), and EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER IN THE END!
There are major twists that you don't expect, and I consider myself pretty good at seeing through that kind of thing. Even the Epilogue added a major twist. This book left me wanting more - one of those times where you know how much of the book is left from page count, and you don't want it to end...
Overall, this book definitely surprised me. I didn't know what to expect and I was shocked by how much the story captured my attention. The writing creates an immersive experience that helped readers to either connect the dots or second guess their opinions. The plot sucked me into the world of Suze and Roy and kept me there whilst everything unravelled slowly. The characters are intriguing and made this book what it is, however, I was not able to find them accessible at any point in the novel. This book was a pleasant surprise and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy a slow-burning thriller. Thank you so much to Smith Publicity Inc. for providing me with a copy of this book!
I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy. It’s not often that I find myself so engrossed in story that I’d rather pull an all-nighter than stop reading, and it’s absolutely unheard of for me to read the last sentence and shout out loud. But I did with this book. Riveting story. Flat-out brilliant plot. Can't wait for the next one in the series!
The law of talion - lex talionis - requires punishment of an injury by inflicting a similar injury on the offender, an injury similar in kind and degree. An eye for an eye, a fracture for a fracture, a tooth for a tooth. Old Testament justice, but just how literally would most people take it to mean? The book begins with a prologue that dates back many years to the death of a child. Just how this fits into the story becomes apparent much much later. We first meet Roy and Susie Cruise on a skiing holiday in Colorado where a television show sparks a conversation about meting out justice. Roy has risen up from a lowly background to making a huge success of his investment company Cruise Capital and together with ex television reporter Susie, the couple are extremely wealthy. They live in Miami in a wonderful house with luxury boats moored on their own dock. The only blight on their lives is the loss of their teenage daughter Camilla in a car accident where the other driver was to blame, texting at the time. Susie has since worked tirelessly to get the punishment for this type of offence raised significantly but has lately found it hasn't really helped her over her child's death. Whilst on their trip they run into another couple, Deb and Tom Wise, who have also encountered a tragic experience with their daughter Kristy and who put a very strange proposal to Roy. Shocked, Roy backs away but months later discusses it with Susie and the couple decide that whilst they cannot avenge Camilla's death (the culprit has already passed away), it might help them to provide someone else with a similar form of justice. They love each other and will do anything to keep each other happy. And so a daring plan is hatched by Roy, and planning is what Roy does best in his business life, so everything is mapped out in detail and nothing left to chance. As he puts it, leave no singing bones. Whilst they start to set it all in place, in Miami Detective Eddie Garza is being asked by a reporter to take yet another look at the death of Liam Bareto, the driver involved in Camilla's accident, by his mother. She is convinced he did not die from natural causes and refuses to let it drop. As the story continues and plans are executed, Eddie follows his hunches and finds he has a lot more suspicious cases to investigate. This complicated plot unravels slowly as the book progresses, with illuminating flashbacks to critical points in time that show how the main players have become the people they are now. However some of them are keeping secrets from the law and from each other, and will go to extreme lengths to protect themselves. This is a story full of shocking action and suspense, told by an unknown narrator who sees all and whose role is revealed at the end as all the various strands are woven together. The author leaves the reader on a massive cliff hanger that leads brilliantly onto book number two as more retribution needs to be served. 4.5*
I don’t want to give away any details, so you’ll have to trust me when I say that Eye for Eye is a must-read. The narrator asks the reader to consider whether revenge is justified in an age where justice is largely out of our hands. If the system fails us, what choice do we have?
I liked especially that Roy and Susie were relatable characters who behaved in a way I could see myself acting in their situation. Their love, fear, and anger are genuine and well-placed--on the surface, at least. I wondered through the whole novel what they were hiding from each other, if it was necessarily hiding, and if it should stay hidden. What secrets are too terrible to tell?
This is a page-turner from the beginning to the very end as revenge is served and favors are returned. I got sweaty palms from the tension between opposing sides. Those sides then shift and become less definite. Roy and Susie may think that decisions are clear and simple. They find, though, that revenge can be more complicated than that.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars.
This was definitely an entertaining book. It centered around 2 couples whose daughters had been wronged and the need for retribution. I thought the question of what to do in a situation like this was interesting but I was actually more entertained by the planning of the retribution. I also enjoyed the initial settings of Beaver Creek, a favorite ski hill, and Miami and Bimini. I agree with another reviewer who thought this read more like a documentary because throughout there weren’t a lot of surprises or twists and turns but there were some reveals at the end that I didn’t see coming including a sort of segue into book 2 which I will definitely want to read.
What?!? You can't end it like that! I want more! Can't wait to read the next book.
Eye for Eye is a How to Get Away with Murder guide. This book was brilliantly written with well-developed characters. It had an original plot with lots of suspense and twists. And a jaw-dropping ending no one would have guessed. Even the narrator was a suspense.
Highly recommended!
Thank you to NetGalley and Talion Publishing for a copy of J.K. Franko's "Eye for Eye" in exchange of an honest review.
I don't even know how to begin to describe this book!! When I finished it one word that popped in my head was Masterpiece!! Well it can most certainly be described as a masterpiece in it's genre. The book is brilliantly written and the story is masterfully crafted. The characters are so brilliantly created, their backstory so brilliantly crafted that the pages just flow and before I realized it the book was finished!! And kudos to Mr Franko for such a brilliant story and the best part was that he left breadcrumbs all over the book and I still wasn't able to massive train sized twist coming till it just smacked me in the face. All I could say at that point was Wow!! The book is well researched and every bit thought out and painstakingly carved out in words. This is by far one the the best books that I've read and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who would or wouldn't care to listen. And a big thank you to NetGalley and Cameron Publicity & Marketing Ltd for giving me this ARC to read in exchange of my honest review. And now a long and arduous wait for next books in the series.
An eye for Eye is not a religions read. Instead it is a How to Commit a Murder without getting caught guide. This was a page turner except it was kind of creepy too. Two couples who have endured tragedy seek to even the score and achieve some revenge. "A copy of this book was provided by Cameron Publicity & Marketing Ltd via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion." GOOD AND CREEPY
How to commit the perfect crime is a regular concern of protagonists in crime fiction, as is how to commit the perfect murder. At heart this is what forms the basis of the plot of Eye for Eye, J.K.Franko’s debut, and the first in a planned trilogy.
Roy Cruise is a successful financier, a former lawyer who now finds start-ups to invest in. He’s good at what he does and has become very successful. His wife Susie is a former television news journalist, turned advocate, warning people against texting while driving. This came out of their family’s personal tragedy; their daughter, Camilla, having died after a man crashed into her car while doing so. While holidaying they meet another couple, Tom and Deb Wise, whose daughter Kristy was raped. They suggest that the Cruise’s kill their daughter’s rapist so that they might secure justice, Old Testament justice, symbolically also avenging Camilla too.
I won’t say any more about the plot, or why the Cruises might agree to do this, or what other twists and turns lie in store for all concerned, for fear of divulging spoilers. Needless to say, all is explained within the novel’s pages. What I can say is that this is a tightly plotted novel with numerous strands which are all woven together with aplomb. The author has obviously thought carefully about how his characters might get away with a “perfect homicide” and he creates a compelling scenario. Clearly, a lot of research has gone into this novel too, the fruits of which are used to make the story very believable.
Eye for Eye is 432 pages, quite a length for a novel, and I have to say that when opening it I was a little concerned that it might flag somewhere in the middle. It wouldn’t be the first novel which did, even famous writers can have trouble sustaining a novel-length story. I’m pleased to say that the author managed it, and I never found my interest waning. In part that’s due to a cast of interesting and compelling characters, who even when engaged in horrible acts remain sympathetic and relatable. But it’s also due to the sheer desire of the reader to know whether they really can pull off the “perfect murder” and the author ensures that one’s interest is captivated throughout.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this novel and will definitely read the sequel. Eye for Eye’s narrator is unknown until the end of the book and I’m guessing this person takes a more centre stage in book 2, so it will be interesting to see how the titles intersect. The Talion Trilogy, as the author is calling the novels, are a series and so I’m sure characters will recur. Will those from Book 1 finally be brought to justice for their crimes or will they forever get away with murder? Will they continue murdering people in book 2 and 3, or will we be introduced to other perpetrators? Needless to say, I look forward to finding out.
Eye For Eye was the twistiest most absorbing tale I’ve read recently, an intelligent and completely compelling literary thriller that is devilishly plotted. The concept gives a nod in the direction of “Strangers On A Train” but then goes off into multiple, equally fascinating directions with retribution as the underlying theme and a cast of characters that make the most unreliable of unreliable narrators look like bastions of truth. Incredibly addictive and beautifully written, J K Franko weaves an intricate web with the reader caught in the centre of it- murder, betrayal, secrets and lies, all here in one hugely gripping story that is honestly unpredictable. With a magnificently elegant hook into the next novel finale, I honestly can’t wait for the next book in the series. Eye For Eye has the benefit of being both a page turner of a psychological thriller and a talented piece of immersive writing creating a perfect storm that will get you hook, line and sinker. Brilliant. Highly Recommended.
This is the type of book that I would name, endless tragedy! It wasn't a sit on the edge of your bed, with the lights on. It is more of a " Would I do that, could I do that"? A moralistic tale! I will not give spoilers; I will tell you a truly heartbreaking story. My brother in law was the nicest young man you would ever meet. I was four years younger and adored him; he and my sister had a two-year-old little boy. He was on his way to College, right after dropping off my nephew. A drunk driver ran him off the road; they said he died instantly. There were questions I never asked myself; I did not want to know the answers. The drunk driver's father was good friends with a crooked Governor, up for his fourth term! He would serve two, stay in politics, serve two more, extremely crooked state, as was the State Attorney General! My brother in law was not the first or last person killed by this jerk! When the funeral was over, I started taking care of my nephew, my sister did not trust him with anyone but me. She was in her own toward spiral, staying with her Mother in law. I took the baby every day when I should have been in College. The short part of the story is, so many people knew him, loved him, wanted to do something; what they did, his father, his brothers, our family, loads of friends took out ads in the State during Election time, the whole thing was on two page ads all over the state, including pictures of what he looked like, immediately after the wreck! These pictures came from the State Police Officer who got to the scene first! He knew my sweet, good, upstanding football player, husband, loved friend, brother, and son. Their strategy worked! The crooked Governor was voted out of office, the Attorney General was voted out of office, the next wreck this jerk was in, no one was killed this time; the Judge put him behind bars for life. Now, could I do what happens in this book? No, I never looked at one picture in the paper, I wanted to remember him as he was, and is! So, to me, this book has murders, gritty stuff, as far I was concerned, my beloved brother in law was murdered! It is called vehicular manslaughter! It is still murder! I recommend! Thanks Netgalley! carolintallahassee.com
Wow! This is one extensively researched, brilliantly written novel. Expertly crafted, the story silently grabs hold and before you know it your deeply entrenched in the lives of the characters. I don't want say too much as this book needs to be experienced while reading. The plot, pacing and character building are spot on. The suspense ramps up throughout, the settings are richly described and the conclusion so surprising that it left me speechless. Part police procedural, part mystery and a whole lot of devious goodness, this one's not to be missed if your a fan of the genre. This is the first book of a series and I'll be immediately starting the next book, Tooth for Tooth after getting some sleep as this one kept me up way past my bedtime!
Talion: ex talionis – the law of talion – punishment of an injury by inflicting a similar injury on the offender, an injury similar in kind and degree.
Love the cover for Eye for Eye by J K Franko. Sure does foreshadow what’s inside!
It started thirty years ago, with the death of Joan, an eleven year old girl that only wanted to have fun at summer camp.
Now…we come to a spoiled rotten kid The scenario is one that always ticks me off royally. Can do the crime, but will do anything not to do the time. And so would his father, the Senator. I think we all know where that’s going. But… a ‘chance’ meeting and a plan is born.
Someone has to pay!
Want to commit a murder? Let’s start with PH1, the guidebook.
As the characters play their roles, I think I see where we’re going. HAH! Was I in for an awakening. The suspense came early and I was eager ‘to turn every page’. But police procedurals and psychological thrillers usually don’t make me have an intense feeling of danger, and urgency like dark, action packed, suspense thrillers. Maybe I’ m more of an adrenaline junky, even though I prefer to get my thrills through osmosis.
Everyone has secrets and as they are revealed I marvel at J K Franko’s imagination. He took Stranger on a Train and blew it away.
La he disfrutado, tenías razón Charlie. Continuaré.
Eye for Eye is one of the best suspense novels I've read in years. Relentless action paired with brilliant plotting made for a book I couldn't put down until I'd read every word! Franko included multiple twists that kept me on my toes throughout—and I pride myself on being able to predict what happens next in books like this! The characters ran the gamut from ones who I was rooting for to ones who I loved to hate, and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series so I can see where the story goes next. I would recommend Eye for Eye to anyone who likes fast-paced, morally ambiguous thrillers, or to any reader who considers themselves a fan of suspense. Incredibly well-written, and I'm already planning on going back to re-read it with fresh eyes to see all of the details and clues I missed along the way!
How well do you reeeeeeeeally know the one you love? How well does one reeeeeeally know oneself? Oh, the disturbing possibilities. I mean reeeeeeeeeally.... Just suspend a little disbelief with this one and you'll have a whole ton of murderous fun!!
This was a very interesting read! The plot was quite unique. I kept questioning who's point of view it was. And I didn't find out until the very end. So it kept me quite intrigued. Make sure you read the epilogue! You need to to get the answers. I have a feeling a few who gave lower ratings may of skipped it. I gave it 4 stars because I felt the first half went a little slow; however it was needed to make sense of everything. Highly recommended!
