Rate this book
Rentt Faina, a twenty-five-year-old adventurer, has been hacking away at monsters for a decade. However, without much talent for the job, Rentt finds himself stuck hunting Slimes and Goblins for meager amounts of coin every day. Little does he know, all this is about to change when he comes across a seemingly undiscovered path in the Labyrinth of the Moon's Reflection.

What awaits him at the end of the path, however, is neither treasure nor riches, but a legendary dragon that wastes no time swallowing him whole! Waking up a short time later, Rentt finds himself not quite dead, but not very alive either— He is nothing more than a pile of bones! Armed with nothing but his trusty sword, tool belt, and ghoulish new looks, Rentt sets off on his quest as a newly reborn Skeleton to achieve Existential Evolution, hoping to one day return to civilization with a more human form.

Will Rentt succeed, or will the labyrinth consume him for the rest of his un-death...?

Verbose and the story revolves inside the protagonist's head while the real story, or should I say the protagonist's world around him, is left behind. Ironically, the Web novel requirement of certain amount of words made the novel version hard to read. The lack of editorial interference and guidance display the poor prose of the novel everywhere.

The flow of the story is constantly interrupted with monologues and expositions that do not help with the story's flow. In addition, concepts are repeated again and again as bad as narrating Goblin Slayer's grimy and cheap helmet but in this time, in hundreds of paragraphs and pages.

The same thing happens in later volumes. DO NOT pick this up. Just go for the manga version, which is already reaching that verbose tipping point for a manga.

So, I liked the narrative, and I enjoyed the idea behind the story, but the problem is that it wasn't written very well, maybe its a problem of it being a translation. About a There is a lot of redundant paragraphs, where they just repeat what the last one said, but phrased slightly different.

Give it to a good editor and have them cut out a lot of the unnecisarry fluff though, I think you'd have a good story.

I like the premise but this is so poorly written that sometimes my head aches. I suspect with good edition this could have been reduced in half.

When I first saw this series, I thought this would be a stupid read, but I'm a nerd. I'm into fantasy, Creatures, and especially dungeon-crawler-style books and games. I thought I might as well give it a go. I had never read manga before either. But good God it is amazing. The style of it is incredible, the system style of evolution, the Mana, storyline, character connections, its all incredible.

I was interested in this light novel because it seemed to present something I hadn't come across in any other light novel. (or fantasy novel for that fact) Now that I have finished it, I have to say that overall, this book was pretty good.

First, let me state that as a light novel, you will come across the staples of light novel writing. It's aimed towards a YA audience, more specifically boys, and takes a lot of it from animes. However, the writing in this book was, at least in my opinion, above other light novels. There is still the mass amount of exposition, but it also flowed better, the protagonist's explanations working with the story rather than against it.

I also was a fan of how the protagonist was handled in this novel. He wasn't a Mary Sue, but rather someone who was just extremely helpful and an accomplished low level adventurer. This was extremely plausible and I liked how everyone respected him despite his apparently weakness. (when compared to the protagonists in How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord: Volume 1 and Sword Art Online: Progressive, Vol. 1 for example) It is because of this the reader can relate better to the protagonist, and understand just why everyone is his friend.

If I had to pick a flaw to the book however, I would state that the exposition is still an issue. Sure, it flows better than other light novels, but it's still the elephant in the room. A lot of the book is the protagonist explaining what is going on, over and over again. His entire thought processes are documented through great detail and most of what he does is telling his emotions rather than showing them through actions.

Still, this was one of the more enjoyable light novels I have read in awhile. Judging from the author's afterword, he's a bit more experienced than some of the other writers, so that may be the case. (or not, I really don't know) But if you are looking for a light read with a fantasy spin, this would be a book that I would recommend.

This is a difficult book to rate. It's rare that I think so highly of certain elements while so poorly of others within the same story.

Character - 5/10, Plot - 8/10, Setting/Magic - 8/10, Writing - 3/10 or 6/10, Enjoyment - 3/10 or 7/10

Anyone who's read a few light novels probably knows not to expect the most manly or strong-willed MC. It seems most stories involve either a young edge lord or a middle-aged, broken-down salaryman type. They are usually pretty bland. Rentt, our MC, is the fantasy adventurer version of the salaryman as he's a perpetual bronze rank adventurer who just doesn't have what it takes to advance, but is a great newbie mentor. Unfortunately, he gets eaten by a dragon and pooped out as a sentient skeleton. The biggest problem I had with Rentt was that he was so busy being a passive receiver of life events. This might change in future volumes, but the characters were a weak spot for this story.

The plot, on the other hand, has a great premise. Our MC dies and is reborn as a skeleton monster. While he was stuck at bronze rank while human, now as a monster, he gains strength from each kill and can evolve into higher-tier monsters. It's a fun premise, and there are lots of obstacles, not just in the growing stronger as an undead monster but also from how Rentt tries to interact with his former friends and the rest of humanity.

The setting and magic are mostly generic fantasy stuff, but there's a lot more detail given for how dungeons work, the adventuring life, and the transparency life cycle of a slime. Fluid from a freshly spawned slime is evidently an important ingredient in most cosmetics. The extra levels of attention given to mundane details give me hope that there will be some unique elements in this story compared to other similar ones.

The writing is another weak spot and probably the weakest element of the book. Most people who dislike this book will probably point to the writing as the reason. It's obscenely verbose and redundant. Combine that with the passive MC and it gets mind-numbingly annoying. It's like asking a person a question with a one-word answer, and instead, they talk for five minutes about the weather and then act like they answered you.

I will probably read the next volume just off the strength of the premise and I guess I'll see how things go from there. If the MC develops some backbone and stops coming across as an idiot when people talk to him, then I might end up liking this. I never really thought about dropping, but book 2 will be walking on thin ice with me.

While the story itself is quite good, the writing style was baroque, and quite often involved several paragraphs that served no purpose other than to fill space, making it really hard to finish.

Good story, poorly translated

Good plot, poorly translated, repeats itself for draw out explanations. I still enjoyed it though, I hope it gets better.

Disappointing

So bad!

After absolutely loving the anime and manga, I was doing the whole thing backwards, I decided to read the light novels next. This is the first time that I can honestly say the anime and manga adoptions are better than the light novel source material.

I was trying to explain to my husband why I felt it was so bad. I was able to narrow it down to describing it as rambling. For some reason that I cannot fathom, the author takes six to eight pages to monologue details in a very repetitive and unnecessarily complex manner. For example, you might have six to eight pages of explanation explaining why so and so is going to say something in response to something someone else said. None of the information is particularly relevant, and you could skip reading all of that filler and just go to the next dialogue line and you really wouldn't miss anything. If that weren't enough, there's a whole bunch of segments with the same amount of filler but her additional filler on top of that. What I mean by that is they'll be a section from the main character's perspective and then the next section will be that in section all over again but from the perspective of a different character in that scene. There might be a few small details that are different from the scene but those extra details are usually more of that background filler. Often these characters are characters that you aren't going to see again. After reading the manga and watching the first season of the anime I know you never see the cook character again and yet he has dedicated to him close to 20 pages of filler content. And when I say filler content, I'm not referring to his arc in the dungeon.

Another aspect that absolutely baffled me was frequent recapping of content from previous chapters. It's so repetitive that the author is literally over explaining the setting or generic rules that they already explained over and over again. Additionally, some of the explanations are things that the reader should be capable of concluding on their own. The author does not let you think on your own, they tell you how to think. So you end up with a whole bunch of pages where they're explaining to you why you should be thinking the way they want you to and if you forget the next chapter will remind you again why you should be thinking the way the author wants you to. Very frustrating.

I was very disappointed with the fact that half this book was stuff that I ended up not even bothering to read but skimming. If that weren't enough, the amount of story covered in this volume only reaches the halfway point in the anime season 1. All of this content was so much better streamlined in the manga and took up significantly less pages. This actually has me a little depressed, because if that's how all the next books are going to be then I might not get any new content.

I made a rookie mistake and bought all the novels and one go for reasons. After reading Volume 1, I honestly think I probably wouldn't have bought any of the others and continue to reading. Since I'm now committed to reading the rest of the line novels I will do my best to post reviews as to whether or not it was worth continuing the series. I really hope that the editing improves in the next volume.

Phew, I made it through this just in time.

So this is the story of a 25 year old lower rank adventurer on the outskirts rural town of a fantasy realm... Who dies. But that's not the end as the title implies. He becomes an undead.

The story deals with a few different concepts. One is realizing your worth and how much you mean to people. Our main character Rentt doesn't really get how valuable he is to the guild (the unwanted part of the title refers to his inability to rank up, hence him not catching on with higher ranking adventurers). Every single character in the book receives some sort of help from him, and sees him as a valuable existence. He's almost too good....

Until, that is, they turn him vampiric. So upon his death, he resurrects (for some unknown reason) as a skeleton. Now he can level up like a Pokemon, so don't expect him to stay a static hero. As he levels, his desires to eat inhuman things become strong, so he craves flesh when he's in one form, in a leveled up form blood will do. They're hoping after he becomes a full on vampire he can level up back into a human, but this seems like it'll be a long journey. They do some pseudo-sciencey based stuff that's nice to see in this kind of setting, gives the mechanics and fights more weight.

Female cast is surprisingly pretty low key so far except for Lorraine, his scientific friend, who features on the right side of the cover. Lorraine is basically his safety net in town. She'll let him stay at her abode in exchange for doing some small experiments. She pretty clearly shows an interest in him that continues after his "death"... Which is a bit creepy, but I guess endearing. She's not super weak: she leaves her door wide open so friend and foe alike can enter; when a dangerous situation catches her unawares, she deals with it in a calm manner; she's level headed when trying to figure out how to deal with Rentt's predicament. She's just a good character that I think most who finish volume 1 will be rooting for.

Like I said, Rina, the girl on the top, only features in a very small section. We don't fully learn her deal. Her biggest deal this volume is just getting our hero initial help back into town. She's a lot younger than the other two by about 7-8 years, so she plays more of the innocent, weak adventurer role. In fact, one of the first things that happens is she becomes a damsel (not really her fault, but still). I'm hoping once she works her way into the plot, she doesn't become a romantic love interest, but I'm sure she will.

Still a pretty small scale story. I didn't catch everything at the end (which basically features our final female crew member on the left of the cover, who I don't believe gets a name). Overall, I'm intrigued to see where they go with this. Like, even if he can level into a human... He's still undead I think. So I don't know if becoming human is viable. Maybe it'll turn into a vampire tale? IDK, guess we'll see.

Rentt Faina was an adventurer with more dreams than concrete achievements. Until the day he stumbles across an unmarked passageway, finds a dragon, and gets killed. Now a skeleton monster that has somehow retained his ego, he's struggling to work his way back to a human form. But being a monster has given him the opportunity his human self never had to get stronger . . .

This was a pretty decent story, but there were a few glaring things that stuck out to me.

It's wordy. Really, really wordy. The author is using a lot of very common tropes for the subgenre, but feels the need to expound on them for paragrahs and sometimes pages. I found myself skimming a lot of this volume, especially near the beginning, because these slime monsters are not different enough from everyone else's slime monsters to require two pages to describe them.

I also found Rentt rather inconsistent. The story paints him as someone who has managed to build up a decent amount of skill despite not having the power to advance beyond his low rank. However, the initial fight scenes don't show off any of that supposed skill. He's distracted in front of the low level monsters that could kill him (has to provide those pages of exposition).

That said, the story got steady enough by the end that I'm hoping future volumes cut down a bit on the excessive description and lean more into the various issues Rentt uncovers in his new existence as an undead. At least in this first book, though, it's not distinct enough to be much different from loads of other similar novels. I rate this book Neutral.

(For a much better "I woke up as an undead" story, try The King of the Dead at the Dark Palace.)

Started reading this because of the ongoing anime and I’ve never started a Light Novel series before. I really did enjoy it, it was a quick read all things considered, but I have to echo a lot of issues I’ve seen with the editing/translation. A whole lot of redundancy especially in the latter half of this volume. Once I accepted that, it was easy to move on and just brush off clear translation issues and enjoy the story. I really like the exploration into the different relationships the protagonist has, and why after 15 years of being a low-tier adventurer, he has cultivated an image of dependability and perseverance. While being physically unimpressive, his humble personality and desire to become what is essentially an ideal hero propels his relationships forward and that’s genuinely interesting to see. I will be continuing reading the series, especially since it is an easy read.

This isn’t a bad light novel by any means, but it is so verbose. There are entire paragraphs just reiterating something that was already explained in one sentence.

At times, the information is even conflicting which I chalk up to the author getting confused himself by his own unnecessary wordiness.

My eyes glazed over several times while reading this and at one point I even fell asleep.

I did enjoy the premise and the characters and it does have potential. I can only hope the writing improves with later volumes.

The idea behind the story was good, and it was very funny at times. However, maybe because of the translation or maybe because they did not have a decent editor, the volume is incredibly repetitive, unnecessarily long, and feels like rambling many times.

That said, it was an interesting read which I enjoyed, and I hope the following volumes are a bit better edited so that there is no repetitiveness. On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Would love to give this more stars as there's a lot of good about it (characters are great and good story too), but there's just way too much density to it. If it were world-building or something that would be a good thing, but it's often repetitive and inane thoughts of the MC that rarely add anything to the story. In fact, for me, it has reduced a solid four or maybe even five star book down to a three.

While a good story with an interesting point of view, this book does suffer from a problem unfortunately common among Japanese-authored light novels; to whit, it was translated literally, not literarily. Marks of such translation are repetition, set-phrases, and "telling, rather than showing." Those not accustomed to such features may find it difficult to read fluently.

It's alright

Not a bad story and it's well written and well translated. It's just incredibly slow, too slow for my tastes. The main character will literally have a whole chapter just off his thoughts in an inner monologue. There's barely any action and the main characters thoughts are repetitious. It's hard to get into it when the main character is so boring.

Interesting

A very interesting read. We follow Rentt Faina on his average everyday life, or so it seems. Waking up after misfortune as a skeleton is not something one normally has to deal with. Isolation, and a lingering goal leave our Mc unable to give up even when the chips are down. Thoroughly recommend if you are a fan of dungeons and fantasy.

I admit I watched the anime first, and I'll probably stick with the anime instead since it's fairly true to the light novel or vice versa (not sure which came first). That said, there are times that this gets a bit convoluted and verbose, though that's probably more on the translator than anything else

Good storyline, great characters BUT most of the pages repeat themselves or say the same thing but in a different way, a third of this book is it repeating itself and an internal monologue of the mc describing and going into the most basic of concepts.

Fun premise, but boring execution. The characters over explain everything, which reads like padding. I wonder if things were completely lost in translation, because this work was devoid of humor.

I'm disappointed, because I love skeletons as characters and this book didn't deliver.

Inner dialogue kills it.

Great story, great concept, but good God, the absolute worst when it comes to the sheer volume of internal dialogue. I wouldn't be going out on a limb by saying 80% of this book is pure inner thoughts

5/5 for story, setting, characters, plot, etc. Writing and pacing struggle a bit however. It's all written in the first person perspective, which makes writing action scenes a bit difficult. I really enjoy the series though.

DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE

These books are horrendous. Pages upon pages upon pages of needless, inane exposition. He interrupts BATTLES to insert PAGES of useless drivel. I feel like the loss of time I wasted on trying to muddle through it is time I will never get back.

Calling it 3 stars for now. The story shows promise and I like the main character but the author has a real problem with redundancy. There are places where they restate the same basic thing three or four times in a row.

If you can get past the dull prose, the constant pontificating about adventuring and what it entails, and somewhat lackluster characters, there is an interesting story hiding here. Interesting enough for me to read the next volume.

This is a fairly simple book in terms of storyline, but it sets up a wonderful plot, characters, and does enough world building that later novels will be easily able to build off of. Excited for the next volume!
